365in2023
365in2023 is a creative community on Twitter (@365_in_2023) that gives and shares like no other I have experienced on social media. It is populated by positive people who love photography and are unafraid to try things out, challenge their work and have fun with their practice. Each day in 2023, participants receive a Latin word to consider and stimulate their photographic imagination. An additional monthly challenge invites participants to reflect on the work of a widely respected photographer, apply or interpret their approach to their own work, and share a daily image. In January 2023, Fred Herzog was the selected photographer.
Fred Herzog
Fred Herzog (1930-2019) created colour photographs of his adopted city of Vancouver, Canada, for over fifty years, beginning when black and white photography was regarded as the more serious form of the medium. Using a Leica 35 mmm camera loaded with Kodachrome slide film, he documented life in the streets, alleyways and waterfront, with a careful and empathetic eye for signs, shops, and cars along with people going about their daily lives. While he produced his own darkroom black and white prints, his colour slide film was sent away for processing, signalling his strong aptitude for getting the composition correct in camera.
Las Calles de Lima
The photographs in this book come from the streets of Lima, taken over a twenty-four-year period between 1995-2019. The earlier analogue work comes from scans of Fujichrome slide film.
