Mito, a town of around 1,500 people, is located 3,286 m high in the Andes of Peru in Concepción, Junín Region. It is the home of the Huaconada, a cultural dance and event performed in January of each year that UNESCO recognized for its Intrinsic Cultural Heritage in 2010. It is a ritual that brings traditions into the ongoing social life of the people of Mito. It reaffirms and maintains their collective identity, founded in indigenous, pre-Hispanic Andean culture, and adapted to later colonial and more modern influences. It is a representation of their past brought alive and current through the values embodied in the masked figure of the Huacon and the transfer and retention of their cultural knowledge through the generations.
These photographs come from Mito between December 31, 2018, to January 3, 2019, during the filming of The Mask and More, a documentary about the masks and costumes, the performances and personalities that create this fabulous component of Peru’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
The film The Mask and More (2019) is available on Vimeo and YouTube. Behind the Mask, a book about Mito and the Huaconada (116 pages), was published by Betula Books in 2020.
Mito, un pueblo de alrededor de 1.500 habitantes, está ubicado a 3.286 m de altura en los Andes del Perú en Concepción, Región Junín. Es el hogar de la Huaconada, un baile y evento cultural que se realiza en enero de cada año y que la UNESCO reconoció como Patrimonio Cultural Intrínseco en 2010. Es un ritual que trae tradiciones a la vida social en curso de la gente de Mito. Reafirma y mantiene su identidad colectiva, fundada en la cultura andina indígena prehispánica, y adaptada a influencias coloniales posteriores y más modernas. Es una representación de su pasado revivido y actual a través de los valores encarnados en la figura enmascarada del Huacón y la transferencia y retención de su conocimiento cultural a través de las generaciones.
Estas fotografías provienen de Mito entre el 31 de diciembre de 2018 y el 3 de enero de 2019, durante la filmación de La Máscara y Más, un documental sobre las máscaras y disfraces, las representaciones y personalidades que crean este fabuloso componente del rico y diverso patrimonio cultural del Perú.
La película La Máscara y Más (2019) está disponible en Vimeo y YouTube. Detrás de la Máscara, un libro sobre Mito y la Huaconada (116 páginas), fue publicado por Betula Books en 2020.
