Strategic Plan update At Ivanhoe Girls’, we are steadfast in our pursuit of enabling exceptional learning and teaching for our students in a safe, friendly and nurturing community.

Throughout 2018, a great deal of research, consultation and discussion took place to imagine and shape the future of our School so this great work can continue. It is our intent to raise students’ outcomes and experiences to a new, even higher benchmark that transcends the already enviable outcomes and experiences of our graduates.

In September, a strategic planning workshop took place to review the actions that were identified during research and consultation work. The workshop was attended by members of the Ivanhoe Girls’ Board of Directors and the School’s Management Team.

Some exciting new projects are now either underway or planned, and our School community will be kept informed every step of the way. We know that our current and future parents expect us to plan for the next generation as well as for our current students. We hold fast the

knowledge that there is an inextricable connection between student wellbeing and learning, and as such, it will be evident in all of our decision making for the future.

Our Strategic Plan is not a static document. It has been designed to allow us to be responsive and agile as we plan for the future. Many traditions will remain unchanged. However, as we build on our heritage, we will use our imaginations to facilitate the innovations that we know will be the key to our students’ future.

We are excited and very optimistic about the future of our school.

Connecting Learning to the Real World Thanks to technology, our students have instant access to more information, skills and knowledge than ever before.

However, in this golden age of technology, the risk for educators is that students may struggle to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the world outside of school.

At Ivanhoe Girls’ we understand that it is vital for our students to make connections and meaning from their learning. In addition to students having opportunities to develop knowledge, technical skills, persistence, selfregulation, organisational skills and resilience, we are increasingly looking at ways for students to make connections between their learning and the real world.

This year, there have been many opportunities for students to collaborate on projects and apply their skills to tackle real-world problems. For example, our Year 9 students have been exploring concepts of Social Enterprise and Innovation. Small groups of students have each been exploring a new idea or a new way to advance a social cause.

One group has been developing packaging for animal products that clearly show the conditions in which the animals have been farmed. Through this and other explorations, students have been in contact with industry specialists to inform their thinking and ultimately to advance their projects.

There have been many more opportunities for students to extend their skills into real-life applications. Some of these, which you can read about in this edition of Lux Mea, include: • our Junior School students, who each year organise fundraising activities to help charities and good causes • our Year 8 students, who have this year used a range of design thinking techniques to identify issues and develop solutions to manage social media use in teenagers • our Year 10 Human Rights students, who this year organised and ran a student conference focused on current human rights issues

Innovation Station

My love of technology stems from the opportunities that it presents. Things that often seem impossible in life, become possible when using different types of technology. The creation and concepts of such tech are also absolutely fascinating, like a finished puzzle, with each piece placed perfectly, smaller functions merging together to form the larger structure/system.

Over the coming months we will be transforming a section of the Library into a new flexible learning space. The Innovation Station is a space where our students will be able to tinker and explore their creativity and make functioning prototypes of their designs.

In this space, students will have access to a mix of sophisticated manufacturing technology, such as robots, programmable electronics, 3D printers to build intricate designs, and a laser cutter that can shape or engrave wood, acrylic and paper.

The Innovation Station is a part of a bigger framework in which we aim to have our students thinking and exploring more deeply in their learning. Part of this framework involves applying Design Thinking across a broader range of areas in both the Junior and Senior Schools, giving our students more control over what they can create and encouraging them to create across the curriculum, not just in one subject area.

This approach is already happening across a range of subjects such as “Roaring Twenties”, where students are making a working model of a 1920s radio, or “Digital Design” where students are programming electronics to prevent dew from forming on a telescope.

The Innovation Station will provide the space and resources for these activities to flourish.

Currently, I am creating a final piece for a Studio Arts Units 1 & 2 project which requires intricate details on miniature buildings. With the tools I have now, I know the outcome would possibly be messy and subpar to my expectations.

Which is why I’m excited about the new laser cutters in the Innovation Station.

For someone like me who has always wanted to create intricate designs and patterns, the laser cutter is perfect.

My imagination runs wild as I think about all the possibilities the Innovation Station presents for me. Interwoven forms creating a futuristic looking art piece could be easily printed using a 3D printer, whilst more traditional patterns cut into wood would look stunning.

Being able to use new technologies now will not only help me increase proficiency and knowledge in design and use of such machines but also broaden my horizons, allowing me to discover new potential and limitations within myself by not sticking to the traditional methods in creating art and branching out to a more technical side.

I’m also excited about introducing many curious friends to this wonderful space, to share, collaborate and create with these wonderful machines and technology.

Year 8 Design Thinking During Term Two, Year 8 students took part in a design thinking task called the Social Media and technology Think Tank (SMAtTT).

SMAtTT was designed to help us get the very best out of our deep thinking, take hold of our critical reflection and think outside the box in order to solve problems regarding addiction to social media.

Each tutor group had to come up with three core themes or problems relating to social media, which we explored using the Sequential Question and Insight Diagram (SQUID). The SQUID was a useful task for working through questions and answers to find the real problem.

SMAtTT was a very enjoyable program which helped all students in Year 8 learn design thinking techniques we can use in the future.

Another technique we used was the Five Whys. This task enabled us to find questions relating to our three core themes. An example of this was, if our problem statement was “children are addicted to social media”, then our question would be, “Why are children

Junior School Social Service This semester, Junior School has been focused on giving back to the community. We started off supporting the St Kilda Mums by collecting pre-loved coats and jackets to support families in need.

We were off to a great start and couldn’t wait for more great social service projects to come!

As our Westgarth buddies are the sweetest, 4N decided to raise money for a new keyboard. This was very successful!

The people at the Westgarth Community Centre were delighted when the Year 4 girls unveiled the keyboard.

I have to say this next social service was awesome! DEAS – Drop Everything and Sleep. This social service was run by 3E and it was great fun as we got to dress up in our PJs, onesies or casual clothes.

Whenever the bell rang we would sleep for how long the teacher wanted us to.

There was a gold coin donation from all who took part and it went towards supporting Australian farmers affected by the drought.

Some of the Amazon Rainforest has recently been cut down which brought our attention to this matter. So to link with the Arts Festival, the whole Junior School donated silver coins to create a fabulous

creation of the Amazon River – but that wasn’t all. Ms Hatzipavlis and Mme Edwards helped to create the fun and educational event. We learnt more about the Amazon rainforest and decorated paper leaves with watercolours and then wrote down our own special ideas that we would contribute to stop the destruction of the rainforest.

A new social service activity took place this year called ‘Loud Shirt Day!’ 2D hosted a painting event to raise money for the organisation Taralye; who aim to help give the gift of sound and speech to children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

On Thursday 18 October, students could bring along and paint their own plain T-shirt and then we all wore our ‘loud’ t-shirts on Friday 19 October at School.

5M were keen to raise everyone’s awareness about environmental issues and sustainability. They shared

information and promoted discussions about these important issues. 3C led a social service event this term to raise awareness about indigenous literacy.

They ran a lunchtime activity where Junior School students did dot paintings on bark, leaves, normal paper and black paper and read Dreamtime stories.

We all know that everybody loves Christmas, so to top the year off we had a Christmas talent show led by 5C, where everybody was able to dress up in a Christmas theme. Monies raised supported our PLAN sponsor child and MS Australia. We’ve had some great social service activites this semester!

The Passion Projects This year, the Year 11s have pioneered a new style of fundraiser, based on the idea that students will be more engaged and motivated to campaign for a cause if they’re passionate about it.

The SRC identified six Passion Groups which students could choose to join: domestic violence, respectful relationships and consent, the environment, homelessness, feminism and mental health. Each group, led by an SRC member organised their own project, which included fundraising, raising awareness or a campaign, which was held over a lunchtime in Term Four.

Each group’s Passion Project has taken a very different path. For example, the Domestic Violence group sold white ice cream along with white ribbons to raise money for White Ribbon Australia, whereas, the Homelessness group held a bake sale where students could

purchase cakes with sanitary products instead of money, which were then donated to the Period Project.

We’ve learnt a lot from this experience.

As part of each group’s planning, a lot of research was conducted into legislation and policies in place around Australia, along with statistics, charities and organisations related to each issue.

Some of this research really surprised us and opened our eyes to the true impact these issues have in Australia.

I personally, have learnt that our Year Level is very diverse and truly passionate about making the change we want to see in the world.

The Passion Projects have been a thoroughly successful activity and we are thrilled to share them with the rest of the School.

Find Your Voice Conference Students in the Year 10 Human Rights class have been given the opportunity and responsibility of organising a conference for their peers from schools across Melbourne and Launceston.

The ‘Find Your Voice’ Conference in May 2018 was run in partnership with Liberty Victoria and featured renowned human rights advocate Julian Burnside AO QC, Aboriginal and public health campaigner Sheena Watt and President of Liberty Victoria and former Ivanhoe Girls’ student Jessie Taylor (Class of 1999).

Highlights of the day included a welcome and smoking ceremony performed by Wurundjeri elder Ian Hunter and a Q&A session with a panel of prominent lawyers and rights advocates, which challenged students to present interesting and topical questions.

We have enjoyed exploring different humanitarian issues and expanding our awareness, in a way that we otherwise wouldn’t have done. Our goal for the conference was to influence and inspire the next generation of leaders to form their own views surrounding current issues in our society.”

Our students were responsible for organising the entire event, including scheduling and budgeting, through to promotional and marketing. Sensory Play in the ELC Quite often when we speak to adults and ask them to conjure up memories of their childhood, there are familiar themes.

Stomping in puddles, making mud pies and getting dirty are some of these memories we hold so dear. These are also experiences steeped in rich learning and one of the reasons why we have developed a mud pit and mud kitchen in the Early Learning Centre.

helps improve cognitive function and contributes to feelings of relaxation and calm, so it is no wonder that playing in mud makes us feel happy.

Sensory play is such an important part of our program and essential for children’s growth. The multi-sensorial nature of these activities are important for brain development, which peaks in early childhood, and the open-ended nature of mud allows endless opportunities for creative thinking and expression.

What kind of activities do you take part in?

The activities we do depend on the time of year and the interests of the members.

They can include packing reusable sanitary items for girls in Cambodia to allow them to go to school, applying for community grants to give to local charities, fundraising by having sausage sizzles and cupcake stalls, inviting guest speakers to the School, going on visits to local charity groups or packing cards for Anglicare Victoria.

Helping those who are disadvantaged, even if it’s just for a lunchtime, makes you feel good and happy with yourself.

This is something the whole group has been able to bond over and we’ve all become closer over the years.

Giving back to our local and international community is important because we have the opportunity to help people who are less fortunate than us. Knowing that an hour of our time can help girls attend school or keep homeless people warm in the winter is very rewarding.

House Performing Arts has always been my favourite event to show my friends my love of performing onstage. Not only this but there is always a great atmosphere in the Town Hall and everyone gets involved on the day. This year I got to step out of my comfort zone and take on the role as Danny from Grease. I was super nervous to have such a big role in Ashby’s open item however I just got onstage and had some fun and it worked in my favour.

I got amazing feedback and Ashby came away with a solid 3rd place.”

Singing for joy With the intense pressure of VCE all-consuming, it’s important for students to find a way to let off steam.

For Year 12 student Alex, singing in the Concordia Choir with her friends is the perfect antidote to studying.

“It’s definitely a break,” she says. Alex has been involved in choir since Year 7, and as the years have progressed more and more of her friends have joined in too. “We’ve got this massive group from our friendship group of about 10 girls, just singing the alto parts,” she says.

“It’s been so much fun.”

“Being together with our whole kind of cohort, just singing together… I really enjoy it, just that unison,” she explains.

“I just find it really rewarding.”

But can singing really help with the anxieties of Year 12? Laura Ross, Head of Choir thinks so. During the choir rehearsal “the students can’t think of anything but the music. They can’t worry about tests or SACs, they’re too busy concentrating on the music,” she explains.

“Study after study shows the positive health and wellbeing benefits of singing in a choir – our heart beats are even synchronised,” Laura says. “Singing together reduces the stress hormone

cortisol and endorphins are released resulting in a sense of joy and euphoria.”

Alex agrees. “I guess choir has always been there, as that underlying anxiety reliever,” she says. And the regular Wednesday rehearsal gives structure and routine,” she adds.

This year the Year 12s are excited about singing for Celebration Night a song that they first sang in Year 7. “We started with Baba Yetu and we’re finishing with it,” she laughs. “A lot of people have come back to choir just to sing it. It’s become a bit of a legend,” she says. “They even played it at our formal.”

Untitled The aim of this work was to explore the relationship and contrast between light and dark.

“

It is part of a series of digital photographs where I was exploring colour and its ability to evoke emotion in a viewer.

I used UV paint, activated underneath a UV light, to create a vibrant pattern on the model so that she would appear to be illuminated, creating a transition between the calm darkness of the background and the chaotic bright colours.

The messiness of the paint application attempts to create a sense of freedom which is contrasted by the position of the model’s head and the soft transition between her and the black background.

I was initially inspired to explore colour in my photography by the work of Maggie West, in particular her Jourdan + Jason series, in which she used coloured lighting to create beautiful portraits.

I was also inspired to create this work through the idea of combining painting and photography, two mediums which I enjoy working with, and my interest in depicting portraits.

My favourite thing about studying Art this year was the freedom to explore new techniques and media whilst engaging with a concept I was interested in. I loved the focus on experimentation and the emphasis on making mistakes as being an important part of the process towards developing a final work.

Ivanhoe Girls’ has a strong rate of participation and achievement in sport.

In August, our Senior A Basketball team won the GSV Tournament against long term rivals, OLMC, to become 2018 Premiers.

We caught up with Year 12 students Jayde and Charlotte, to find out more about playing basketball for Ivanhoe Girls’.

How did you get involved in basketball in the first place?

Jayde: Most of the girls who were a part of this year’s senior basketball team have been involved in basketball at Ivanhoe Girls’ since Year 7. At that age and being in such a new environment, GSV sport was a great way to get to know other girls with the same interests as you. Considering we all loved the competitive nature of basketball it was something we looked forward to each year.

What do you love about the sport?

Charlotte: I am a very competitive person so sport has always been a way to channel that. The team environment of basketball combined with being able to run as hard as I could and push and shove, made it a sport I have always really enjoyed.

How did it feel to finally become premiers? Jayde: OLMC were our “long-time rivals”, as Ms Fraser would call them, and they had some really high level players. Although intimidating for many years, we took it as a challenge, determined to take out the title in our final year of competing.

Making and winning the Grand Final was a great achievement and after five years, to finally become premiers in our last year was an incredible way to finish of our basketball days at Ivanhoe Girls’.

How has being in a team sport helped you get to know other students or form friendships? Charlotte: I don’t think I can say any of my friendships with people from other year levels has been without that team connection.

Year 9 Projects

Saving the world… one scr This year the Year 9s have been working in small groups to address real world problems they feel passionate about. From small scale social enterprise to tackling intractable problems with innovative solutions, collaboration is key – and failure is an essential part of the learning process.

Throughout this year, the Year 9s have been participating in projects – either creating a social enterprise or creating an innovative product. Both of these groups aim to help other people in some way. The Social Enterprise groups have created products to raise money for a charity of their choice. The Innovation Groups create products to help others in less fortunate situations or they raise awareness for different causes.

My group is a part of the Social Enterprise stream. We decided to produce scrunchies to raise money for the organisation Dignity Period. This organisation donates money to girls in rural areas of Ethiopia to educate them about hygiene and their menstrual cycles. Educating these girls about how to manage their menstruation allows them to stay in school and gain a proper education.

Dignity Period also hires Ethiopian women to make reusable pads, giving them the opportunity to work and earn money.

We felt that scrunchies would be a good product to sell to our peers because they have become really popular recently.

At first we struggled with how we were going to make the scrunchies as we had planned to buy them and headbands and then tye-dye those. Unfortunately that had an unrealistic price, which we probably wouldn’t have been able to make a profit from. Then we had the idea to hand make the scrunchies ourselves.

This helped move our project quicker and we soon started to produce lots of scrunchies. But another thing that we struggled with was time management because it was difficult to organise who was doing different things. By the time the market came around we had produced a total of 138 Scrunchies and we sold a majority of those. We are extremely proud of how this project turned out! Now we are still producing scrunchies and are planning to sell more both at the Expo coming up and to family and friends.”

Our group Mini Bling made anklets/bracelets for our Year 9 project.

We all enjoyed this task and learnt important skills that will benefit us in the future. We worked well together as a group and incorporated everyone’s ideas. We found this task very interesting as we have never done anything like this before. We made a few changes in the process of this task to improve our product. We experienced times when everything went as planned and some other times when things didn’t. But we always moved on and worked through it as a group. Overall it was a good experience to learn from and hopefully take this knowledge with us in the future.”

Throughout this project, our group, Ecobalm worked hard and cooperatively to produce our very own organic and natural lip balm.

From start to finish our team faced many challenges including a strict budget, finding a working formula, managing time, balancing essential oils and coming up with a meaningful logo. We managed to overcome all of our challenges and in the end were able to produce a product of which we were all really proud of. It was a challenging experience but we learnt many skills and had a lot of fun while raising money for Foodbank. Overall, the entire process was rewarding and enjoyable. Relationships were strengthened, skills were learnt and money was raised!”

Our Community

From the Archives The Ivanhoe Girls’ crest and motto have been used at the School for a very long time.

‘Lux Mea Christus’ (‘Christ my light’) was chosen as the motto by founding Principal Frances Lowe, early in the school’s history.

When the School became Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School in 1923 a new crest was adopted, which included a Bishop’s mitre and the Virgin’s Lamp, a further connection to light.

Although the crest has evolved over the past hundred years, these symbols have remained closely connected to the School’s identity.

Second Life Uniform Shop The Second Life Uniform (SLU) Shop is a service that the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Mothers’ Association has operated for many years for the benefit of our School community.

Run by volunteers, the store provides families the opportunity to purchase good quality pre-loved garments at a reduced price, and to sell their uniforms, which helps create less landfill and allows them to recoup part of the initial costs. Families receive 70 percent of the sale price, while 30 percent is retained by the Mother’s Association.

This money goes towards the running and upkeep of the store, along with any other projects we contribute to within the School community.

This year the SLU Shop has been working closely with Information Technology student Caitlin (Year 11) to create a new point of sale (POS) system for the shop, a project which Caitlin has been completing as part of her VCE studies.

The SLU Shop has for many years been running on an outdated and antiquated system; the new software will allow the SLU Shop to keep better track of sales and stock. All our volunteers are looking forward to using what will be a more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive system.

Staff Profiles Cara Harbottle Senior School Teacher and Year 9 Tutor I currently teach VCE Legal Studies, VCE Business Management and a Year 9 Commerce Elective called Criminal Minds in Senior School. I am also a Year 9 Tutor, which involves a pastoral care role and I have been involved with mentoring students in our new Year 9 unit that focuses on design thinking, enterprise skills and social service.

Outside of teaching, my responsibilities include assisting with running Australian Business Week, helping with selection of students for the Mooting Competition and YMCA Youth Parliament and helping run table tennis club! I have also been lucky enough to take Year 9 students on the Brotherhood of St Laurence Urban Camp for a few years running, this experience really challenges students and is incredibly rewarding.

Before I came to Ivanhoe Girls’, I studied Law and Social Science before completing my education degree. I’ve worked as a teacher and year level coordinator, and spent a number of years working for the Department of Education. This role was incredibly rewarding as I was able to contribute to the development of educational policy and got to work in a variety of school settings. I also ran my own educational consultancy company where I worked with individual schools developing their strategic direction and also delivered professional development on topics like differentiation and data analysis.

I’ve always been passionate about education; I am a keen learner and am interested in all areas of education. I love that education is so varied and there are many different approaches that can be utilised to help students acquire new skills and knowledge.

Outside of work I love spending time with my family, reading, writing, travelling and attending local plays or music gigs.

To remind myself what it is like to learn something from scratch I also like to attempt new things occasionally – recently I’ve taken up ukulele lessons!

Yvonne Smith Print Room Manager

Yvonne Smith

My role is to manage the School’s fleet of printers, including four production machines. I help staff with all their printing and stationery needs, including class sets, exams, and reports, and I help produce communications and marketing material for the School.

I am a qualified compositor by trade, a job which doesn’t exist anymore, where I learnt typesetting, paste-up, film and plate making. When computers took off, my job evolved into a graphic designer.

The staff at Ivanhoe Girls’ are so friendly and caring. We are like one big family; when times are tough, we look after each other. Every day I see and help staff who come to the Print Room for stationery or printing, when they need some inspiration or need a quick chat. I have tried to create a welcoming environment and a space to be creative.

I am a huge AFL fan. I am a Hawthorn member and love watching them play in Melbourne and sometimes interstate. I love Mondays in winter, as I get many staff dropping in and discussing the weekend’s AFL results.

I completed an Engineering/Science double degree at The University of Melbourne and then Masters in Physics, specialising in accelerator physics.

My research was mainly focused on beam physics and instrumentation for particle accelerators, and I spent time at the Australian Synchrotron and CERN during my studies.

Over the course of my five-year Arts and Law degree I fell in love with the law.

After graduating I worked at a suburban legal practice and took advantage of the opportunity to work as a solicitor advocate in the local Magistrate’s Court.

I then moved over to the United States to work as a software engineer at Facebook in Silicon Valley. After a few years, I left to join an education technology start-up in San Francisco called Remind, where I’ve been working for the last three years as an engineer. Remind provides a communication platform that makes it easier for teachers, parents, students and schools to manage communication with each other.

Isabelle Dawson

I completed a Bachelor of Commerce and a Diploma of Language in French at The University of Melbourne, during which I did an internship at Goldman Sachs in Melbourne in the Global Investment Research division. I was offered a graduate role in the same division and started working there full time in early 2014.

After two and a half years working in the Melbourne office I was given the opportunity to transfer to New York where I work today. I have worked my way up to an associate role focusing on Industrial US equities. What I love most about the job is that no two days are the same; it’s a very fast paced environment which is challenging but equally rewarding.

After nearly two years I accepted an Associateship at the County Court of Victoria, working for His Honour Judge Meredith of the Criminal Division. I started studying for the Bar exam while working at the court, and passed the exam in May of this year. I commence the Readers Course shortly, and very much look forward to developing my business at the Bar. Alongside these career pursuits I have continued to play basketball at a high level. I have played for the Melbourne Boomers WNBL team, represented Monash University on the international stage, and I currently play for the Knox Raiders State Championship Women’s team.

I began studying a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Science at La Trobe University in 2014 and I am currently completing an Honours year in Biochemistry.

My Honours project involves studying proteins involved in the intercellular communication of the pathogenic yeast Candida albicans. Usually, Candida only causes superficial yeast infections in healthy people.

However, in immunocompromised individuals it can cause deadly systemic infections, which is why it is important to better understand how it infects people.

I am enjoying my Honours year because I am completing novel research and experiments which are at the forefront of science.

Rovina Cai Class of 2006 Rovina is a freelance illustrator who works across a variety of genres, illustrating books, creating covers and interior artwork.

After completing Year 12 at Ivanhoe Girls’ in 2006, she studied Communication Design at RMIT before completing a Masters of Fine Arts in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

In 2016 she illustrated her first picture book, Tintinnabula by Margo Lanagan, and her work was recognised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia with the Crichton Award for debut book illustrators. She has since completed another book, and is in the process of illustrating two more.

“What I love most about illustration is collaborating with other people and getting to work on a wide variety of subject matter.”

Rovina remembers spending a lot of time in the Hillsley Visual Arts and Hospitality Complex working on her folio in Year 12.

She particularly remembers being handed a copy of The Arrival by Shaun Tan by her art teacher, Mr Deryck Greenwood (currently Head of Visual Arts at Ivanhoe Girls’), looking through the book and realising she wanted to be an illustrator.

After a lengthy and impressive career in the legal profession, including 28 as a barrister and six as a Queen’s Counsel, Judge Caroline Kirton QC was formally admitted to the Federal Circuit Court of Australia in January this year.

I started an Associate Diploma of Geoscience in 1996 in which I excelled and was awarded the TAFE SA Gold Award when I finished in 1997. I was immediately offered a role at Santos as an Engineering Technical Assistant even though I had my heart set on a role with geology. As it was, this was serendipitous, as Engineering suits the way my brain works!

Caroline attended Ivanhoe Girls’ in Form 5 and 6 in 1978 and 1979. “Ivanhoe Girls’ introduced me to a cohort of educated women teachers who were interested in education, valued education and excellence in education,” she says.

Caroline studied an Arts/Law degree at The University of Melbourne, majoring in Mandarin. In her third year of university Caroline was offered Articles at Melbourne law firm Phillips Fox and Masel, and decided “to become a partner in a city law firm.”

After working as a solicitor in Mount Isa, Queensland, Caroline returned to Melbourne to join the Banking and Finance Department at Phillips Fox. She was admitted to the Bar in 1990.

During her lengthy career she has also been an advocacy teacher, the President of Australian Women Lawyers and the Convenor of the Women Barristers Association. She has also been the Chair of the Law Council’s Equal Opportunity Committee, where she took part in the national discussion about LGBTI rights in the workplace, and the focus on bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace.

After working in the role for three years, I went back to university part-time. I studied Petroleum Engineering at the Australian School of Petroleum at Adelaide University.

It took me 11 years to complete.

When I finished I took long service leave, with my daughter, aged 9. We spent five months in our caravan travelling up the east coast of Australia. This was a wonderful time.

On return I was promoted to Senior Reservoir Engineer. I now have the opportunity to work with wonderfully skilled technical people; geophysicists, geologists and engineers, in a multidisciplinary team looking after Santos’ oil and gas fields in South Australia and South West Queensland.

My job involves using complex maths and Reservoir Engineering techniques along with some geology to recover hydrocarbons from Santos’ oil and gas reservoirs. I feel proud of what I do. About a year ago, I became a Chartered Engineer and added a few more letters after my name.

I dabbled as a journalist for a few years, and then in 1992 started my Bachelor of Nursing. I worked at Bendigo Hospital until the beginning of 2014 when I decided to move to the Northern Territory. I worked as a Graduate Nurse Educator and as a Discharge Planner before moving into Medication Safety at Royal Darwin Hospital. From there I transitioned to Primary Health and took up the role of Medication Safety Nurse Consultant.

I graduated as a registered nurse in 1990, then completed further post-graduate studies in Practice and Management and Critical Care Nursing. After 10 years working as both a critical care nurse and Nurse Unit Manager in a major acute public hospital in Melbourne, I decided to branch into an area of nursing of which I had always been drawn to, Primary Health Care, and have worked in a variety of roles in the Northern Territory.

The Top End Health Service has 23 primary health clinics, mostly in remote Aboriginal communities. My role is to ensure quality use of medications, to investigate any adverse events which may occur around medications and to work with a team to implement change to make medication systems as safe as they can be. I love flying across the Northern Territory and feel very privileged to be able to visit and work in these remote communities, as they are not places that are readily accessible. Remote Area Nurses are remarkably resilient and to be able to get to know and work alongside these people is an honour.

My role is to lead the Clinical Safety, Quality and Accreditation Program across Primary Health Care at the Top End Health Service. I manage a small enthusiastic team as well as working more broadly with quality staff across the service. I particularly love working with and learning from my Aboriginal colleagues; it’s an amazing privilege.

Living and working so far away from ‘my world’ isn’t easy; it is because of Fiona that I continue to do it. Having grown up together means that we just “get” each other in a lot of ways.

She is so passionate about her job and such a great manager.
