Ivanhoe Girls’ is a forward-thinking community of learners who are thoughtful in their choices and brave in their actions.

The decision to send your child to Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School is a choice that will shape their future. At Ivanhoe Girls’, we believe the opportunity to educate girls, to prepare them for happiness and success in their adult lives, is a privilege.
Since 1903, Ivanhoe Girls' has found and nurtured the strengths of our learners. Today, the School continues to provide a personalised education for each girl to explore and extend herself academically, socially and culturally, while developing a disposition founded on integrity and generous service to our community.
We believe that the wellbeing and character building of our students is as important as their academic achievements. By maintaining our enrolments between 850 – 1000 learners from our Early Learning Centre through to Year 12, we are able to know each student as an individual, to monitor her progress carefully and to ensure she feels accepted, valued and validated in a nurturing atmosphere.
In so doing, we develop articulate, courageous, critical thinkers who are generous of spirit, have a lifelong love of learning, who have a voice and use it to make a positive contribution to their wider community.
As testament to Ivanhoe Girls’ tradition of innovative and socially progressive education, our graduates have achieved outstanding success in a broad range of Australian and international tertiary pathways, across diverse fields of study. The key to success is to encourage and nurture creativity in whatever combination of subjects our girls are interested to study and explore, which is why Mathematics, Science, Creative Arts and Music are among our most popular and successful subjects.
At Ivanhoe Girls’, we welcome every student as a unique individual and we foster in them the confidence to discover their talents and to elevate their natural strengths. Teachers, who are passionate experts in their field, help to provide the inspiration and support each student needs to flourish. Our students are challenged to set personal learning goals and to become deep learners in order to achieve them. We expect our students to think independently, to question their own and other people’s ideas, and to know that there are no mistakes, only opportunities to learn.
Ivanhoe Girls’ is a remarkable and forward-thinking school that enthusiastically embraces innovation and new opportunities. I encourage you and your daughter to come and experience school life for yourself. I look forward to meeting you and to introducing you to our students who speak for themselves at one of our many School Tours held throughout the year.

Narelle Umbers Principal

There is truly something special about the culture of our school which is often spoken about by parents, students and staff. There is a warmth and a friendliness, that is hard to describe, but experienced by those who walk through our gardens and become a part of the Ivanhoe Girls’ family.
Our students also take on the responsibility of helping others all over the world by getting involved in many charitable causes, and can participate in community service to assist our neighbouring facilities, community groups and local hospitals. Students become compassionate contributors to their community and the world, committed to social justice, sustainability and philanthropy.

At Ivanhoe Girls’, we foster a culture of thinking and learning that equips our students with the essential knowledge and complex competencies needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
We acknowledge and value that learning extends beyond the classroom and understand that learning is underpinned by meaningful relationships. Engaging, varied lessons connected to real-life experiences ignite students’ passions and curiosity, supporting a strength-based approach in which every student can experience personal growth and success.
Our vision for teaching and learning at Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School is to create an active classroom culture that nurtures deep thinking, student agency, collaboration, reflection and critical thinking. We recognise that learning must be purposeful and authentic. We are committed to a differentiated and inclusive learning environment and hold high expectations for every student in our care.
Our teachers are experts in knowledge, curriculum design and pedagogical practices, serving as effective communicators and facilitators who model and build strong, positive and respectful relationships with and among our students.
As a school, we have collaboratively developed a bespoke Teaching and Learning Toolkit, which includes our teaching and learning vision and purpose statements alongside our eight principles of good teaching, which helps guide and shape our approach to teaching and learning at Ivanhoe Girls’.

At Ivanhoe Girls’ we define wellbeing as the experience of 'Feeling Good', 'Functioning Well', and 'Doing Good' for other people. We aim to create a space that is safe for all students to grow and flourish and where they are given the opportunity to understand the impact that they can have on the world around them.
According to research, a student who has high levels of wellbeing is likely to have better physical health, stronger social relationships, more optimism for the future and higher academic performance. All positive reasons for us to be intentional about wellbeing education throughout the School.
Given that the ability to describe and understand our own wellbeing is an important factor that shapes outcomes for students, research into how wellbeing literacy can be fostered in schools is essential. Wellbeing literacy enables members of the community to interact in ways that build an understanding of their own and others’ emotions and to use this understanding to shape their actions.
The GROW Wellbeing Framework at Ivanhoe Girls’ gives every individual the space to grow their own skills and develop their understanding so that they can apply the skills that are meaningful to them, to situations when they need it.
Our GROW framework has been developed to address the differing developmental requirements for our whole community to ensure that we are able to provide an environment where we can all learn and receive the care needed at every stage of the schooling journey. The vision is that ‘Together we are Forging a Vibrant Community with Wellbeing at our Core.’
Starting the vision with the word “together” means that the most important thing to us is that our community works with one another. To build strengths within our community, we ensure that every student is seen as their own unique self. Evidence-based elements are delivered across our community, linking resources and experiences to ensure we are able to increase our understanding of the benefits of the elements and how to apply our knowledge.
Evidence-based elements fall under the umbrella of our definition for wellbeing that is ‘Feeling Good’, ‘Functioning Well’ and ‘Doing Good’. These elements such as gratitude, grit and resilience, habits and goals and inclusion will be delivered through teaching and learning experiences, cocurricular activities and dedicated wellbeing time with all students from ELC to Year 12.

Ivanhoe Girls’ aims to provide the very best learning environment for all of our students. Built on strong foundations and underpinned by an active Student Wellbeing program, our teaching philosophy focusses on the unique needs of the individual, enabling each student to achieve their potential. As such, learning at Ivanhoe Girls’ encompasses much more than simply academic achievement; we focus on the whole individual.
Ivanhoe Girls' provides a wonderful environment for each student to explore, face challenges and learn from varied experiences; effectively developing a strong sense of self, resilience and a willingness to experience new things. Through these varied opportunities, students utilise a broad range of thinking and learning skills and strategies that not only equip them with the flexibility to thrive in a changing world, but also acquire advanced leaderships skills, compassion and a curious mind.
In Senior School each student is provided with a structured learning environment best suited to their developmental and learning needs. Our curriculum combines a strong academic focus and provides dynamic and challenging learning opportunities that cater for the full range of students’ individual interests, abilities and learning styles. This is enhanced by a diverse range of innovative co-curricular programs, which present exciting opportunities for further exploration into individual interests or specialisation.
Our students embrace every opportunity to progress and try new things. This is because we ensure Ivanhoe Girls’ is a place where every student feels safe and confident to pursue their learning. Our students are given the scope to practise independent and critical thought, to make mistakes, and are encouraged to try again with confidence and tenacity.
We care deeply about our students, and our commitment to providing a valuable Student Wellbeing Framework ensures that every student receives the support required to achieve their best.
In Senior School, students are placed in small tutorial groups under the direct care of a Tutor. The Tutor group meets daily and provides a strong sense of connection and belonging. During the course of the year, the students and Tutor naturally develop a close relationship and the Tutor group becomes an incredible support network, where encouragement and advice are offered in an accepting, respectful and non-formal setting.
Throughout Senior School, every student has a range of significant adults from their Year Level Coordinator, Tutor, class teachers, Counsellors, Health Centre, Director of Student Wellbeing and Chaplain who provide each student with guidance and a sense of connection. Frameworks such as the Peer Support Program also enable Senior School students to mentor younger students, encouraging cross-age friendships and deepening the connectedness amongst the School community.
We have found the most effective way for our students to find success is to let them be their authentic selves, offering them the scope to make their own choices, find their own voice, and to set and pursue a range of academic and personal goals in a supportive and stimulating environment where effort and excellence are recognised and highly regarded.

Introducing empowerED, Ivanhoe Girls’ new, immersive learning program designed to intentionally develop these complex competencies.
Introducing empowerED, Ivanhoe Girls’ new, immersive learning program designed to prepare our young people for their future. While we don’t know what that looks like, we do know the skills they will need to adapt and thrive. These include the ability to learn independently, to collaborate productively, to innovate, problem-solve, to take responsibility, to think critically, have empathy and self-awareness, and to be entrepreneurial.
Our new empowerED Learning Program will be delivered from 2027, in a dedicated term, in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Our students will be coached and mentored to develop, plan and execute projects that spark their interest. During their empowerED term each year, students will be accessing the Australian Curriculum and preparing for their VCE, but they will be learning through projects and experiences rather than ‘subjects’. They will get to experience the freedom of being ‘off timetable’ so that they can go deeper into their learning.
Learning in empowerED will be rigorous and challenging. There will be assessment and there will be credentials to earn, in fact at times we expect it will push our students well outside their comfort zones.
There are four distinct Learning Strands of empowerED: Environments and Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, Design and Technology, and Wellbeing and Life Skills. The facility has been purposely designed to cater for these Learning Strands.

Progression through empowerED will be measured using The University of Melbourne’s Complex Competencies Framework with ‘Agency in Learning’ as the focus. We want our students to develop the skills to know “what to learn, how to learn it, and who to learn it from” to be able to solve real problems. The knowledge and skills gained in this program, along with their strong Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), are the best things our students can take into their futures in a rapidly changing world.
We will have a purpose-built innovative learning facility for empowerED, so our students can immerse themselves in the program for a term each year whilst staying connected to their co-curricular activities, their House, and all the support structures we offer them.

From our Early Learning Centre to Year 6, each student is provided with a structured learning environment best suited to her developmental and learning needs. Our curriculum combines a strong academic focus with dynamic and challenging learning opportunities that cater for the full range of students’ individual interests, abilities and learning styles.
This is enhanced by a diverse range of innovative co-curricular programs, which present exciting opportunities for further exploration into individual pursuits.
Our students embrace every opportunity to progress and try new things. This is because we ensure Ivanhoe Girls’ is a place every student feels safe and confident to pursue her learning. Our students are given the scope to practise independent and critical thought, to make mistakes, and are encouraged to try again with confidence and tenacity. The individual support each student is offered stems from our active and involved Student Wellbeing program, which transcends all we do.
The Wellbeing program enables class teachers to ensure all Junior School staff are aware of any special needs of their students. Our teachers are great listeners and spend time helping each student develop strategies and social skills to support their emotional and social development.
We care deeply about the social and emotional wellbeing of our students, and are committed to providing a positive, safe and secure environment to maximise effective learning and positive development.
Throughout Junior School, every student has a range of significant adults from her class teacher to specialist teachers, counsellors and a Chaplain to provide her with guidance and a sense of connection. Programs such as the Buddy System also work to provide another level of connectedness and support in the School community.
We have found the most effective way for our students to find success is to let them be their authentic selves, offering them the scope to make their own choices, find their own voice, and to set and pursue a range of academic and personal goals in a supportive and stimulating environment where effort and excellence are recognised and highly regarded.

Each area of the curriculum is underpinned by key skills for learning such as Literacy, Numeracy, Information Technology, Thinking, Creativity, Teamwork and Communication.
These skills, behaviours and dispositions help students to become successful, independent learners at school and in their lives beyond school. We aim to equip students with key skills for learning to manage their own wellbeing, to relate well to others, to make informed decisions and to become responsible citizens.
In the Junior School, we support students to enrich and deepen their understanding by teaching specific thinking skills and by developing and modelling attitudes, inclinations and habits of mind that foster a disposition for critical and creative thinking.
Our Literacy program is designed to develop the ability to speak, listen, read, view and write with enjoyment, purpose and confidence in a range of contexts.
Through our speaking and listening programs the students are taught the skills to speak with confidence in a variety of formal and informal situations.
Our curriculum provides teachers with a basis for monitoring, planning and making judgements about numeracy achievement in the following strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. We also aim to develop understanding, fluency, problemsolving, and reasoning skills which form the thinking and doing of Mathematics. These skills develop the ability to become a proficient mathematician.
Students are curious about their world and, through Science, learn to ask questions, make predictions and find answers about the natural and physical aspects of the world. Learning Science helps students make sense of their world and to learn to appreciate and care for it.
Science is taught both in stand-alone topics and as part of the integrated inquiry curriculum.
The opportunity to really bring French alive at Ivanhoe Girls’ is achieved through the Accelerated Integrated Method (AIM). This is a technique of teaching French using hand gestures, drama, creative story-writing, puppetry, music and dance which is known as the “Gesture Approach”.
In the Junior School these elements are combined to introduce and reinforce vocabulary. The program is story-based which enhances student involvement and allows the teacher to introduce many different scaffolded oral and written activities.
Most importantly, the AIM method is focused largely on the student’s pathway to oral fluency. The classes are energetic and animated as the students speak in French for a large proportion of the class. Students reach an impressive level of fluency in a relatively short time.
Physical Education in the Junior School incorporates Human Movement, Human Development, Physical Activity and the Community and Safety.
The program is designed to offer sequential skill development in games, movement, dance, gymnastics, weekly swimming, fitness, fundamental motor skills, athletics and ball skills.
Every opportunity is given for students to participate in a variety of sports and physical activities. At the School and co-curricular level, students are involved in swimming and athletics carnivals, cross-country running, netball, hockey, aerobics, tee-ball, softball, skiing, tennis and diving events.
The Integrated Curriculum develops skills and understandings in Humanities, Social Sciences and Health.
Integrated units of work are designed to help students learn about themselves and being part of a society, the ways people interact with each other and their environments over time, cultures other than their own and ways people use science and technology to explore and improve our world.
The Junior School Visual Arts program is a rich and varied one providing the opportunity for all students to learn through the medium of Art. Through active participation in a variety of Visual Arts experiences students develop confidence in expressing their creative ideas.
The integration of Art with other disciplines and the core curriculum creates an exciting, logical and meaningful context for students’ learning.
The Performing Arts are seen as fundamental for the creative, social and intellectual development of the students. The Performing Arts course is therefore designed to allow for new ways of experiencing, developing, representing, presenting and understanding emotions, values and cultural beliefs. Students are encouraged to gain these experiences through a combination of making and creating music, drama and dance and responding to a diverse range of existing arts experiences.
Religious Education is included in the Junior School as part of students’ familiarisation with their Anglican school context. Each class takes leadership of one Christian church service per year, held in St. James’ Anglican Church, attended by the whole Junior School. Through contributing to such services, students grow in their knowledge and experience of the Christian philosophy and practice, as well as in their skills in music, public speaking, drama and other creative arts.
Religious Education is complemented by the teaching of mindfulness, stillness and humanitarian values in the classroom throughout the year. Respect for diversity is modelled at every level.

Students can become involved in a number of sporting activities within the School and interschool competitions. Students in Years 3 –6 compete in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) competition. These sports include Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country running. Tuesday sport (Netball, Hockey, Softball, Soccer, Volleyball and Tee Ball), usually involves Years 5 and 6 students and we compete against other girls’ schools.
Interested students may train for and compete in other co-curricular activities such as the Victorian InterSchools SnowSports Championship, Aerobics, Diving, Basketball and Tennis competitions.

The Ivanhoe Girls' Early Learning Centre is a special community where out nurturing staff and engaging environment provides children and their families with a sense of belonging and security.
The two years within the Early Learning Centre are ones of significant growth. This is an exciting time as it is when many of the attitudes to learning are established
The Kindergarten year (3-4 year olds) provides a caring supportive start to formal schooling whilst recognising the unique needs of this age group.
The PrePrep year (4 -5 year olds) is a separate program that builds upon the knowledge, skills and dispositions of the Kindergarten program, whilst providing a solid foundation for the years ahead.
Our programs are rich in play and provide abundant opportunities for the children to inquire, wonder, explore and discover. Current research identifies play as being important for healthy brain development as it contributes to the academic, physical, social and emotional wellbeing of children. We know that children learn best within a context of positive interactions and relationships. The emotional and social development of

each child forms the cornerstone of our programs. Each child progresses at different rates and is an indiviual with her own skills, strengths and interests. We celebrate what makes us unique and appreciate the diversity in others.
Our highly qualified and experienced staff support your child in all aspects of their development. Consistent review and assessment of our programs ensures we are drawing on the best theory and practice from Australia and overseas. In particular, we are strongly influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach to Early Childhood education which shapes out image of the child as competent and capable and coming to out Centre with a wealth of experience and understandings.
The Ivanhoe Girls’ Early Learning Centre has been rated as “Exceeding the National Quality Standards” under the National Quality Framework by the Department of Education and Training in 2025

A basic tenet of Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School is that each child has their own individual strengths, talents and interests and it is vital that we identify and foster these in each student. All students benefit from enrichment and a classroom climate that is accepting and offers opportunity for creativity and challenge.
When planning curriculum, teachers seek to provide opportunities that allow all students to attain optimal levels of learning. This is usually done within the mixed-ability classroom. Students are encouraged to learn in ways that are consistent with their preferred learning styles and to develop skills in other areas.
At Ivanhoe Girls’ there are a range of other structures and techniques which are used to support and enrich individual student learning. The Head of Learning Enhancement is responsible for the overview of development and implementation of programs which meet individual students’ needs, in addition to the classroom program.
The first step in providing support is assessing and monitoring students’ progress. Assessment is used to identify areas of mastery and conceptual gaps. Students in Junior School and Years 7 to 10 in Senior School are assessed to enable appropriate support programs to be offered in Numeracy and Literacy.
The School offers additional support from Prep to Year 12 either by withdrawal of individuals or small groups for targeted teaching or as part of an ongoing program.
Learning Enhancement staff also work closely with classroom teachers to create programs that ensure students are challenged. In addition, some formal enrichment opportunities are provided to students in Years 1 to 12. This may include regular or occasional small group extension activities in Maths and English .

In Senior School as part of the classroom music program, discussions and demonstrations of the various instruments are held informing students of the options available to them and the responsibilities attached to learning an instrument. Guidance can be given about the appropriateness of choices and likelihood of success within the overall context of a student's education at the School. Tuition is avaialble in:
Bass Guitar Bassoon Cello Clarinet
Double Bass Euphonium Flute French Horn
Guitar Harp Oboe Percussion
Piano Pipe Organ Recorder Saxophone
Theory Trombone Trumpet Tuba
Viola Violin Voice
A range of performance ensembles are offered to Senior School students who play an instrument or sing. Membership of these ensembles is voluntary, but all students who learn an instrument in or out of school are encouraged to participate in one or more groups. Most of these ensembles are nonauditioned, however, students may be asked to audition for entrance into some of the more senior ensembles. Most rehearsals are held outside normal school hours as part of the School’s co-curricular program. Some ensembles, particularly those involving large numbers of Years 7 and 8 students, are held in Music class time.
This year the following groups are:
Year 7 Band Year 8 Band
Year 7 Choir Year 8 Choir
Year 7 P bone Year 8 P bone
Year 7 String Ensemble Year 8 String Ensemble Year 7 Oboe Year 8 Oboe
Year 7 Double Bass Year 8 Double Bass
Year 7 Percussion Year 8 Percussion
Year 7 Viola Year 8 Viola
Students from Years 7 to 12 may elect to undertake Speech and Drama tuition.
Through a program of Speech and Drama training a student will develop confidence and the ability to communicate, utilising both verbal and non-verbal skills. In this program drama is used as a tool to improve speech skills and to create an enjoyable learning atmosphere.
There is no optimum age to commence music tuition. Generally strings and piano are started as early as possible in Prep, occasionally PrePrep. Other instruments are started later and depend on the student’s physical development. Brass and woodwind instruments are usually offered from Year 4 but some students can commence successfully with instruments such as trumpet, clarinet and flute as early as Year 3
In Prep, it is recommended that a parent/guardian attends instrumental lessons for the first six months. Before applying, parents should first contact the Prep teacher to discuss whether their child is ready to commence private lessons during Semester 1 as some children take more time to settle into the routine of school.
Prep to Year 2 students receive one hour of classroom Music each week as part of the normal classroom curriculum. This program teaches the skills of singing, reading and writing music, listening to and creating music, playing a wide range of percussion instruments and developing performance techniques. Students in Year 1 receive one 30 minute group lesson per week on violin, viola and cello as part of the classroom Music program.
Co-curricular tuition on an individual and paired basis is also available for students in Prep to Year 2 on the following instruments:
Violin/Viola Cello Guitar Recorder
Piano – Students taking piano lessons must have a piano at home on which to practise. Piano lessons may only be taken on an individual basis.
Students in Prep–Year 2 learning string instruments are encouraged to join Fiddian Strings which rehearse before school on Monday during term time.
Extra-curricular tuition on an individual or paired basis is available to students in Years 3 to 6 on the following instruments:
Bassoon Cello Clarinet
Double Bass
Euphonium Flute French Horn Guitar
Harp Oboe Percussion Piano

A range of performance ensembles are offered to Junior School students who play an instrument or sing. Membership of ensembles is voluntary but all students who learn an instrument in or out of school are encouraged to participate in one or more groups.
At Ivanhoe Girls, Leadership and Service encourages each student to strive towards achieving their personal goals and to contribute to the wider community.
From their early years in the School students are encouraged to apply for leadership positions and to show their ability to be responsible, to work effectively with others in a team, to be confident, to organise and to lead.
In providing a culture of leadership and leadership, we aim to:
• enhance the concepts of leadership, teamwork and service throughout the School community
• develop students’ leadership, teamwork and responsibility skills and provide opportunities to practise these skills in meaningful ways
• uphold the values of leadership and service by providing a
framework for formal recognition of student achievements in these areas
• model that true fulfilment comes from helping others.
The School provides many opportunities to serve others, whether it is in a leadership role or on a more individual basis. Every student has the chance to show their leadership qualities by working in a team to achieve a goal or helping whenever the need arises. We encourage service involvement both in the local community and a much wider view as a global citizen.
All leadership positions have clearly defined responsibilities and roles and the students very proudly and effectively carry out their duties. The staff and students value these leadership opportunities and encourage and support the leaders in contributing to the life of the School in this way. All students can show leadership, even if they do not have an official position.
At Ivanhoe Girls’ we dedicate ourselves to forging an equal, equitable, ongoing and meaningful connection to First Nations People.
Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School’s vision for Reconciliation is pursued through our core school values of Bravery, Curiosity, Kindness, Connectedness, and Vibrancy. As a school community we acknowledge the deep trauma experienced by First Nations People both currently and in the past. This is a result of colonisation and institutionalised racism within our government and Australian society. We commit wholeheartedly to our responsibility as a modern-day Australian institution to listen and learn from the First Peoples of Australia.

The Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Reconciliation Action Plan is our formal statement of commitment to learn, work and persist in the journey towards Reconciliation. Our Reconciliation Action Plan is a living document and underpins our commitment, our responsibility, and our shared journey towards reconciliation.
Through the lens of our values, we dedicate ourselves to forging an equal, equitable, ongoing and meaningful connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations.
