Espacio Micus is one of Ibiza’s must-see art galleries, with a great history and legacy. The gallery used to be a showroom for works by Eduard Micus (1925–2000), the German abstract artist who was a prolific figure in Ibiza’s cultural scene in the 1970s. Born in Höxter an der Weser, Micus studied under the great Willi Baumeister in Stuttgart, before moving to Ibiza in I972. At the time, the island was a retreat from political conflict and a haven for artists, bohemians and beatniks. Micus had a highly distinctive style that defined many of his artworks. ‘I found the simplest connection to the canvases through a seam. It had a function, the seam connected the contrary,’ he wrote in one of the books that document his life and career as an artist. Many of his canvases appear divided by a line or by shades of colour, with contrast as the formal principle, acting as a metaphorical boundary. Espacio Micus, situated at Carretera Jesús-Cala Llonga, was the artist’s home, studio and showroom for many years. After Micus’s death, his daughter, Katja Micus, turned the space into a gallery to display her father’s artworks, as well as to introduce exhibitions throughout the season by globally recognised contemporary artists. Currently showing are works by Stella Matutes, Linde Bialas and Martin Bialas, while from July 18 an exhibition by Andrei Roiter will open, entitled Travelling Questions. Roiter works in various media, including paint, photography and installation. The exhibition relates to the theme of travel as an exploration or escape, both metaphysical and autobiographical.
