Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivalsCarnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, UK, USA, etc.

Richal Fernandes, a compassionate nurse in South Goa, combines clinical skill with empathy, offering mental health and holistic care while inspiring others through resilience, dedication, and patient-centred service.
In the bustling corridors of South Goa District Hospital, Richal Fernandes stands out not just for her clinical expertise but for the genuine compassion she brings to every interaction. A registered nurse with four years of hands-on experience, Richal represents the heart of healthcare—where empathy meets resilience, and where science is balanced by the human touch.
What drew Richal to nursing was never a simple career choice—it was a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The ability to combine critical thinking with empathy and technical skill was a natural fit for her compassionate nature and sense of responsibility.
Her journey from the rigours of nursing school to the demanding yet fulfilling role she holds today has been defined by long hours, personal sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. She recalls the double shifts and sleepless nights, which, though challenging, helped her grow into the resilient professional she is now.
Currently serving in the psychiatric wing under the Tele-MANAS program—a 24/7 government-run tele-counselling service— Richal offers mental health support to individuals across Goa. She finds deep purpose in this role, particularly in connecting with patients who need someone to listen, guide, and support them through invisible struggles. Her work doesn't end at the hospital; Richal also conducts home visits for patients unable to reach medical facilities, a testament to her commitment to holistic care.
A typical day for Richal begins like anyone else’s, but once she steps into her role, every moment becomes about trust-building, communication, and connection. She values the bonds she creates with her patients, finding joy in helping them understand their treatment and in being a source of comfort during vulnerable times.
Nursing is no easy job, and Richal acknowledges the toll it can take—both physically and emotionally. From managing entire wards alone due to staff shortages to navigating emotional exhaustion, she’s faced some of the toughest days with resilience. Still, she remains undeterred, drawing strength from her family’s unwavering support and her own sense of purpose.
Despite the demands, Richal has never seen workload as a burden. “I always knew this wasn’t an easy profession,” she says, “but I was prepared for the challenges that come with caring for others.”
Committed to lifelong learning, Richal stays current with medical advances through seminars, webinars, and trusted online sources. She believes that good communication, compassion, and a patientcentred approach are non-negotiable skills for any nurse. In her eyes, the focus should always remain on the person behind the condition, which is where real healing begins.
For Richal, nursing is never a one-person show. In a hospital setting, collaboration is crucial, and she emphasises the value of a cohesive and understanding team. Whether it's doctors, fellow nurses, or support staff, collective input often leads to the best outcomes for patients. This teamwork, she believes, enhances patient care and ensures that every individual receives well-rounded attention.
Beyond professional skills, nursing has transformed Richal on a personal level. She credits her experiences with patients for teaching her empathy, patience, gratitude, and the importance of living in the moment. Each patient’s story, their resilience in the face of pain or adversity, has shaped her into a more reflective and grounded person.
To those contemplating a future in nursing, Richal offers candid advice: "Be prepared for a journey filled with challenges, but also with unmatched rewards. Stay curious, communicate openly, and always lead with empathy."
If she could speak to her younger self, she’d say this—“Don’t chase perfection. Learn from your mistakes, trust yourself, and remember why you started.”
As she looks to the future, Richal envisions continuing her education, specialising in a field that aligns with her passions, and mentoring the next generation of nurses. She also hopes to contribute to healthcare innovations that can redefine patient care for the better.
Her message to fellow nurses is one of unity: “Let’s keep lifting each other up.” And to the public, she expresses heartfelt gratitude —“Thank you for trusting us with your care. We are here with compassion, dedication, and the promise to always give our best.”
Richal Fernandes is more than just a nurse; she is a beacon of hope, healing, and humanity in a world that often forgets the faces behind the scrubs. Through every patient she meets and every life she touches, she reaffirms what nursing is truly about— being there, wholly and selflessly, when it matters most.
KMAT Goan Dental Care offers expert, compassionate dental services led by Dr. Akhilesh, blending advanced technology with personalised care in a calm, patientfocused environment in Panaji, Goa.
www.itsgoa.com itsgoa_ Itsgoa
Nestled in the heart of Ribandar-Patto, Panaji, KMAT Goan Dental Care has quickly earned a reputation for combining modern dental solutions with a deep commitment to patient comfort and education. At the helm is Dr. K Akhilesh, a skilled Dental Surgeon, Aesthetic Dentist, and Implantologist, whose approach blends advanced clinical expertise with an empathetic, individualised care model.
Dr. Akhilesh’s journey into dentistry was driven by a genuine interest in biology and the health sciences, paired with a strong desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
What began as a technical pursuit has since evolved into a holistic practice philosophy— centred on preventive care, patient awareness, and trust-based relationships. This shift reflects not only the doctor’s personal growth but also the broader transformation in modern dentistry.
The clinic offers a wide range of services, with specialisation in restorative dentistry, endodontics, cosmetic treatments, and surgical extractions.
Procedures like smile makeovers and fullmouth rehabilitations are among the most gratifying for Dr. Akhilesh, as they help restore not just oral function but also a patient’s confidence and social comfort.
Cosmetic dentistry plays a significant role at KMAT, especially in Goa’s culturally vibrant and tourism-driven environment. However, every aesthetic procedure is carefully balanced with functional integrity—ensuring that enhancements to appearance do not compromise speech, bite alignment, or longterm oral health.
In an era where dental technology is rapidly evolving, KMAT Goan Dental Care stays ahead of the curve. Dr. Akhilesh keeps abreast of innovations through national conferences, clinical workshops, and subscriptions to leading journals such as the International Dental Journal and Journal of Indian Dental Association. The clinic has embraced digital dentistry, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and treatment precision.
Despite the challenges posed by rising patient expectations and technological shifts, the clinic invests only in tools that have proven clinical value, ensuring patients receive costeffective and evidence-based care.
When evaluating a new patient, the process begins with a comprehensive consultation. A detailed assessment—supported by radiographs and intraoral imaging—lays the foundation for a customised treatment plan. These plans are structured in phases, addressing urgent issues first while aligning with the patient's lifestyle, goals, and financial preferences.
Education is at the core of every patient interaction. From demonstrating correct brushing and flossing techniques to sharing tailored product recommendations, Dr. Akhilesh ensures that patients are equipped with the knowledge needed for optimal oral hygiene.
The clinic also shares monthly preventive tips via WhatsApp broadcasts, reinforcing home care practices between visits.
Understanding that many patients approach dental visits with apprehension, KMAT has created a soothing clinical atmosphere. Techniques like guided breathing, music therapy, and step-by-step procedural explanations are used to calm nervous patients.
In select cases, mild sedation or shorter, staged appointments are offered, allowing individuals to gradually become comfortable with dental care.
Complex dental cases are managed through a strong referral network across Goa. Whether a patient requires orthodontic alignment, periodontal intervention, or oral surgery, KMAT ensures seamless coordination with trusted specialists.
Digital records and consistent communication help maintain continuity, and visiting consultants are occasionally brought in to enhance convenience and care under one roof.
Among the most persistent misconceptions Dr. Akhilesh encounters is the belief that absence of pain means absence of problems. The clinic actively dispels this myth by encouraging regular check-ups and using visual aids to explain the early stages of dental issues.
Another common concern—that dental treatments are inevitably painful or prohibitively expensive—is addressed through transparent communication, flexible payment options, and a consistently gentle approach.
One of the most touching cases in Dr. Akhilesh’s career involved a young woman who had avoided dentists for years due to anxiety and embarrassment.
Through a structured series of restorative treatments and a smile makeover, her life was transformed—giving her the confidence to embrace new personal and professional opportunities. Such moments are reminders of the profound emotional and social impact that good dental care can have.
Looking ahead, Dr. Akhilesh envisions KMAT Goan Dental Care growing into a multi-chair facility, offering integrated dental services in one location. Expansion plans also include community outreach initiatives in schools and villages, as well as mentoring upcoming dental
professionals. Despite ambitions for growth, the clinic remains firmly rooted in the core values of empathy, integrity, and lifelong learning.

Nikisha Shetye, a dietitian from Ponda, Goa, promotes sustainable, personalised nutrition through her clinic, Diet Diaries, and hospital consultations, emphasising gradual, lasting changes over quick-fix diets.
Nikisha Shetye, a native of Ponda, Goa, has carved a name for herself in the field of nutrition and dietetics. Born and raised in Ponda, Nikisha’s love for travel and gardening has always been a source of joy and inspiration for her. Now happily married for 2.5 years and living with her husband and inlaws, she balances her personal and professional life with skill and hard work.
Nikisha’s journey in the world of nutrition began with the inauguration of her clinic, Diet Diaries by Nikisha Shetye, on June 26, 2022, in Ponda. This clinic stands as a testament to her commitment and passion for promoting healthy living. Alongside managing her clinic, Nikisha also consults at Wisdom Hospital and Swastik Hospital, and is associated with a health clinic named Svay in Panjim.
From a young age, Nikisha aspired to join the medical field. It was a cousin who introduced her to the fascinating world of nutrition. This newfound interest led her to pursue a Bachelor’s degree from Goa College of Home Science. Eager to deepen her knowledge, she moved to Pune to complete her MSc in Clinical Nutrition from Symbiosis Institute of Health Science. During this period, she also undertook a Diabetes Educator course in Mumbai, travelling monthly to the city. Further Increasing her expertise, Nikisha became a certified Sports Nutritionist from ASNFS and a Lactation Counsellor from BPNI in Coimbatore.
Since earning her Master’s degree in 2016, Nikisha has been dedicated to her profession as a dietitian. Initially, she worked as a freelancer and collaborated with various companies. Her experience also includes giving talks at schools and industries. Over the years, she has gained significant experience in managing conditions like PCOS, diabetes, and weight management.
Nikisha’s approach to nutrition is grounded in the belief that slow and steady changes lead to sustainable results. She Focuses on the importance of habits that patients can maintain for life. Recognising that most of her patients are of Goan origin, she provides diet plans that are easy to follow and culturally appropriate. Nikisha strongly opposes quickfix solutions and fad diets, advocating instead for gradual, lasting changes.
One of the common misconceptions Nikisha faces is the belief that excessive exercise or extreme dietary changes are important for weight loss and blood sugar control. She educates her patients on the importance of balanced nutrition and realistic goal-setting. Nikisha stresses that No food is naturally good or bad, but it’s about making mindful choices and understanding the role of each food in a balanced diet.
Nikisha’s diet plans are highly individualised, taking into account each patient’s lifestyle, occupation, religion, and place of residence. She assesses body fat percentage and diet history to create personalised plans. Nikisha understands that drastic changes are not sustainable, and therefore, she recommends gradual adjustments that patients can stick to long-term.
A significant challenge in the field of nutrition is managing patients’ expectations. Nikisha advises her clients to focus on small, achievable goals rather than aiming for big results. She focuses on consistency and reminds her patients to celebrate their progress, no matter how small. This approach helps in maintaining motivation and ensuring long-term success.
When it comes to exercise, Nikisha believes in personalising strategies to individual preferences. She advises her clients to choose routines they enjoy and can sustain. By incorporating personal preferences and periodically adjusting workout intensity, Nikisha ensures her clients remain motivated and committed to their fitness goals.
Looking ahead, Nikisha sees nutrigenomics playing a important role in the field of nutrition. This emerging science offers knowledge into how individual genetic makeup affects nutrient metabolism. By using nutrigenomics, nutrition plans can be further customised, leading to better health outcomes for patients.
To those aspiring to enter the field of nutrition, Nikisha offers valuable advice: never stop learning. Specialising in a particular area and staying updated with the latest research is crucial. She encourages collaboration over competition, emphasising the importance of working together for the betterment of the profession.
Nikisha Shetye’s journey is a remarkable example of passion, perseverance, and dedication. From her early aspirations to her current achievements, she continues to inspire and make a positive impact in the lives of her patients. Through her clinic, Diet Diaries by Nikisha Shetye, and her work at various hospitals, she remains committed to promoting sustainable, healthy living. Nikisha’s story is a testament to the power of personalised nutrition and the importance of continuous learning in the ever-evolving field of dietetics.

Learn how to manage diabetes through diet, exercise, stress control, and regular monitoring for a healthier, balanced life with guidance from Rajlaxmi Bandodkar at Arogya Vihara.
Don’t Let Diabetes Win: How to ake ack
Control of Yo r Health
Living with diabetes can feel overwhelming, but with the right knowledge and daily habits, it can be manageable. Whether you’ve been newly diagnosed or have been managing diabetes for years, taking control of your lifestyle can significantly improve your health
Before managing diabetes effectively, it is crucial to know which type you have
pe 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body produces li le or no insulin. (Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose enter your cells to be used as energy.
pe 2 Diabetes: Often linked to lifestyle factors. The body becomes resistant to insulin, prompting the pancreas to produce more insulin to compensate. Over time, the pancreas may struggle to keep up, causing blood sugar levels to rise — setting the stage for pre-diabetes and eventually Type 2 diabetes
Gestational Diabetes: Occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery. However, it increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life
Diabetes is managed by you, with support from healthcare professionals, doctors, and family
1) Monitor Yo r lood S gar Levels Reg larl
F SL (Fasting Blood Sugar Level):
Normal range: 70–110 mg/d
PPSL (Postprandial Sugar Level — after meals):
Ideal range: 100–120 mg/dL (Acceptable up to 140 mg/dL)
HbA1 (Glycated Haemoglobin): Reflects your average blood sugar level over the past 2–3 months
Normal: Below .7
Pre-diabetes: .7%–6.4
Diabetes: 6. % and abov (Note: These values may vary depending on individual health and your doctor’s recommendations.)
Choose foods with a low glycemic index — these release sugar more slowly into the bloodstream
Focus on fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts
Opt for complex carbohydrates over simple carbs
Include lean proteins and healthy fats to feel fuller and maintain steady glucose levels
Avoid or limit sugary drinks, processed foods, and excess salt
Regular physical activity helps your body use insulin more e ciently and lowers blood sugar levels
Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily — brisk walking, cycling, or swimming Include strength training twice a week to build muscle and improve insulin sensitivity

Embracing Nature’s Wisdom, Dr Rajneesh Kumar, Director of Spa, J Wellness Circle, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa
Nestled amidst the lush greenery and golden shores of South Goa, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa stands as a sanctuary of luxury and serenity. At the heart of its acclaimed J Wellness Circle lies a visionary leader – Dr Rajneesh Kumar, Director of Spa - whose philosophy is deeply rooted in the healing power of nature, the purity of natural ingredients, and the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda. For him, wellness is not just a service but a way of life, inspired by the ancient traditions of India and the vibrant ecosystem of Goa
Dr Rajneesh’s journey into the world of wellness began with a profound appreciation for the natural world. “Nature has always been the greatest teacher,” he says, reflecting on his belief that true healing comes from aligning with the rhythms of the earth. Raised in an environment where traditional practices were part of everyday life, he found himself drawn to Ayurveda—a 5,000-year-old science that emphasises balance, harmony, and the use of natural elements to nurture the body, mind, and soul.
Dr Rajneesh, student of Rajeev Gandhi
Ayurveda Medical college Paprola Himachal Pradesh from University of Himachal Pradesh found his passion in Ayurveda and Wellness and subsequently did his doctorate in Ayurveda Medicine.
At J Wellness Circle, he has brought this philosophy to life, curating experiences that harness the potency of locally sourced ingredients and ancient techniques. “Ayurveda is not just about treatments; it’s about understanding the individual and their connection to the universe,” he explains. His approach blends this ancient wisdom with modern sensibilities, ensuring that every guest leaves feeling rejuvenated and restored.
Goa, with its tropical climate, abundant flora, and coastal charm, plays a pivotal role in shaping the spa’s offerings. Dr Rajneesh believes that wellness is most effective when it reflects the region’s natural bounty. “Goa gives us so much—coconut, kokum, cashew, and the sea air itself. Weaving these gifts into our therapy, this localised approach not only enhances the authenticity of the experience but also deepens the connection between guests and their surroundings.
One of the proudest treatment that J Wellness Circle offers in goa is the Vrikshamla treatment, a signature therapy designed exclusively for the Goa region. “Vrikshamla, or Garcinia indica, is a fruit native to the Western Ghats, and it’s been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries,” he notes. Known locally as kokum, this vibrant red fruit is celebrated for its cooling properties, antiinflammatory benefits, and ability to aid digestion—making it an ideal ingredient for a treatment tailored to Goa’s warm, humid climate.
The Vrikshamla Treatment: A Goa-Inspired Rejuvenation
The Vrikshamla treatment is a testament to J Wellness Circle, Goa Region’s commitment to blending nature, tradition, and regional identity. This 120 minute ritual begins with a consultation. Next comes a warm, nourishing wrap infused with Vrikshamla extract and aloe vera, both sourced from locally. “This step cools the body, which is so important in Goa’s heat, while also hydrating and repairing the skin,” he says.
The wrap is followed by a rhythmic massage using a bespoke oil blend of coconut and Vrikshamla, applied with long, flowing strokes to release tension and improve circulation. The treatment concludes with a refreshing kokum-infused beverage, leaving guests refreshed and grounded.
“The Vrikshamla treatment is about more than relaxation—it’s about balance,” Dr Rajneesh emphasises. “It’s designed to counter the effects of Goa’s climate while honouring the ancient Ayurvedic principle of aligning the doshas (body energies). Guests feel lighter, cooler, and more in tune with themselves.”
For Dr Rajneesh, every treatment at J Wellness Circle in Goa is an opportunity to share the wisdom of Ayurveda and the healing power of nature. He oversees a team of skilled therapists trained in traditional techniques, ensuring that each therapy—from the Vrikshamla therapy to classic Abhyanga massages—reflects authenticity and care. “We use only natural, locally inspired ingredients. There’s no room for artificial substitutes when nature provides everything we need,” he asserts.
His leadership extends beyond the spa’s walls. He collaborates with the in-house horticulture team to grow organic herbs and fruits,
fostering sustainability and supporting the community. “Wellness isn’t just personal; it’s collective. When we thrive in harmony with our environment, everyone benefits,” he says.
Under his leadership and guidance, J Wellness Circle at Taj Exotica has become a beacon of holistic luxury, where guests can escape the chaos of modern life and reconnect with their inner selves. Dr Rajneesh’s belief in nature, natural healing, and Ayurvedic wisdom shines through in every detail—from the serene ambiance to the carefully curated Vrikshamla treatment. “My goal is simple,” he concludes with a smile. “I want every guest to leave feeling like they’ve rediscovered a part of themselves—one that’s been waiting to be nurtured by nature’s embrace.”
In a world that often rushes forward, Dr Rajneesh stands as a guardian of ancient traditions, proving that the path to wellness lies in the timeless gifts of the earth—and in the heart of Goa.
