Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palmfringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals - Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals - the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, The Grape Escapade to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blogbased website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, Germany, UK, USA, UAE, etc.

landscape, bringing together craftsmanship, cultural sensitivity, and environmentally conscious design.
An alumna of the Faculty of Architecture at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Vadodara, Anuradha began her career with a natural curiosity for material, form, and craft. After graduating, she worked with Mandala Design Services in Ahmedabad under architect Neelkanth Chhaya and later trained at the Centre for Scientific Research (CSR) in Auroville, today known as The Earth Institute.

Her six-month training in building with Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) strengthened her understanding of natural materials and alternative construction technologies.
Before dedicating herself fully to architecture, she briefly explored the worlds of fine arts and design at MSU’s Fine Arts College and the National Institute of Design (NID). Studies in sketching, sculpting, furniture making, and product design shaped her creative identity, and she continues to sculpt and craft furniture in wood and metal, showcasing her pieces whenever possible.
Her move to Goa in 1998 marked the beginning of her independent practice. The region’s laterite stone and its culturally grounded architectural language immediately resonated with her. She believes that when one falls in love with a material, the work naturally reflects that devotion.
Alongside practice, Anuradha has taught Visual Art and Design Studio for more than twenty years. Her work today spans architecture, interiors, landscape design, project execution, and site management, allowing her to maintain creative and technical control over each project.
Anuradha’s design philosophy draws heavily from traditional wisdom. Old structures and time-tested techniques guide her approach, inspiring her specialization in restoration, conservation, and adaptive reuse. Breathing life back into dilapidated buildings not only challenges her creatively but also allows her to preserve architectural heritage.

Extension To The Amrit, A Heritage Resort, Candolim

She believes every material, raw, mid-construction, newly completed, or aged, carries its own beauty when used with honesty. Sustainability lies at the heart of her practice. She relies on Efficient use of materials , thorough detailing that ensures longevity for generations.
Her designs harness sunlight, breeze, rain, and natural ventilation, integrating nature intelligently to protect built spaces in Goa’s climate. Each project responds to its site, making no two designs alike. For her, creativity is limitless and deepens only with exploration.
Every project begins with an in-depth site study, orientation, natural slopes, soil conditions, water tables, existing trees, and stones. Understanding the land allows her to design responsibly. Equally important is understanding the client, their dreams, lifestyle, and future aspirations. Through sketches, doodles, and conceptual explorations, she builds the foundation of a shared vision.
Individual homes remain the most fulfilling part of her practice because they reflect the identity and stories of the people who inhabit them. She finds less joy in mass housing or multi-villa projects, as they detach the designer from the end user.
Her nearly 30-year practice thrives on hands-on knowledge of carpentry, masonry, flooring, and landscaping. By training artisans and nurturing a responsible team, she ensures that her values of quality and sustainability translate seamlessly to the site.
Her studio operates with simplicity and humility. She uses AutoCAD and SketchUp for visualization but continues to rely on hand-drawn perspectives and isometrics for conceptual thinking. She keeps her office intentionally small so she can stay personally involved in every project, and her interns gain direct exposure to clients, engineers, and contractors.
She believes that learning and teaching go hand in hand, and gratitude remains central to growth—both as a professional and as a human being.

Restoration projects bring the toughest yet most fulfilling challenges, structural constraints, hidden surprises, and accommodating new requirements.
These challenges demand creative solutions, whether she is adding rooms, altering roof systems, shifting entrances, or enhancing architectural language while preserving the soul of the original structure.
Travel continues to shape her design vocabulary. She sees travel not as leisure but as a form of learning, absorbing material culture, craft traditions, and histories, then reflecting that knowledge in her work.
Sustainability and truthfulness guide her practice. For Anuradha, architecture is not about designing from a desk and visiting a site at completion, it is about immersive participation in the process of making.
Her future vision focuses on continuing to build responsibly, applying green building principles, and designing for longevity with ecological sensitivity. Recently becoming an Accredited Professional with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), she aims to pursue green certifications for her upcoming projects, blending wisdom from the past with innovation for the future.

Jannat Chopra, founder of WellThenSo Design Studio, blends authenticity, quality, and creativity to transform spaces, with ambitious plans to expand her influence in India's interior design industry.
Article by: Team ItsGoa Images by: WellThenSo interior Design Studio www.itsgoa.com
Jannat Chopra, the founder of WellThenSo Design Studio, has made a mark in the interior design world with her innovative approach and dedication. Her journey from Dubai to Goa, combined with her extensive educational background and passion for art, has shaped WellThenSo into a leading design studio. This article delves into Jannat's background, her design philosophy, the services her studio offers, and her future aspirations.
Jannat Chopra's educational journey began in Chandigarh before she moved to Dubai for schooling. Her formative years were in Chennai, where she attended Omega, a spirituality-based school, from 8th to 12th grade. She pursued a BSc in Interiors and Furniture Design in Indore and Ahmedabad, later completing a Masters in Interior and Furniture Design from MIT, Pune.
Jannat’s passion for painting and art significantly influenced her career. She finds inspiration in colours and the depth they bring to a canvas. Her fascination lies in how art can convey ideas and emotions, transforming a blank canvas into a meaningful experience for others.
In 2018, Jannat established WellThenSo Design Studio in Goa. At that time, the design services available in the region were limited, making the design process more of a challenge than a pleasure for clients. Jannat aimed to change this by offering a comprehensive range of design services and materials.
The studio was created with a vision to provide limitless design possibilities. Jannat wanted to offer a vast material library and customizable options for furniture, lighting, wallpaper, and rugs. Her goal was to make the design process enjoyable and hasslefree for her clients.
WellThenSo Design Studio is situated in Porvorim, Goa, a location that Jannat finds ideal for her business. Porvorim's central position allows easy access to both the southern and northern parts of Goa, facilitating site visits and client interactions. This strategic location has positively influenced the studio’s operations and its ability to cater to a diverse clientele.

As the founder of WellThenSo, Jannat emphasises authenticity, service, and quality. These core values guide her approach to both design and business management. She believes that while creativity is essential, maintaining high standards of service and quality is crucial for a successful project. Jannat's dedication to these principles ensures that each project reflects her commitment to excellence.
Jannat’s design philosophy revolves around giving ample time to the design process. She advocates for a thorough, diligent approach to design, which involves careful consideration of over 100 elements in a project. This approach ensures that spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional.
She encourages clients to be patient and allow sufficient time for both design and execution. This patience, she believes, is key to achieving a holistic and well-executed final output. Jannat’s team, with
their expertise and commitment, plays a crucial role in transforming spaces into functional and beautiful experience zones.
WellThenSo offers a wide range of services, including:
Architectural Design
Villa Construction
Interior Design for commercial, residential, and hospitality projects
Interior Execution
Custom Furniture
3D Rendering for architectural and interior design projects
Augmented Reality (AR) for architectural and interior design projects
Product Animation Professional Photography and Videography
The studio's versatility in handling various project types and services highlights its capability to address diverse client needs.
www.itsgoa.com itsgoa_ Itsgoa

Jannat's approach to balancing creativity with practicality involves responsible budget management. She and her team prioritise budget allocation based on project needs and client priorities. By providing a detailed budget sheet and listing essential items, they ensure that clients understand where their investments are going and what compromises, if any, might be necessary.
To maintain consistency and quality across all projects, Jannat relies on well-established systems and a trained team. She emphasises the importance of setting up systems that combine human intervention with organised processes. This approach helps in managing various aspects of the business efficiently and ensures that each project meets the studio’s high standards.

Jannat has faced several challenges as an entrepreneur. One significant issue has been the lack of respect for female authority in business. Additionally, setting up systems and processes has been a gradual process, often requiring troubleshooting and adaptation. Jannat's solution lies in meditation, taking small steps, listening, and maintaining a respectful and optimistic attitude. These practices help her navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship and maintain her focus.
Unlike many designers, Jannat does not follow trends religiously. She believes that design should be driven by the user's needs and the designer's creativity. Innovation, she feels, comes from collaborative efforts among various creative fields. By observing and valuing contributions from architects, photographers, interior designers, and other professionals, Jannat fosters an environment where fresh and innovative ideas emerge organically.
Looking ahead, Jannat envisions WellThenSo becoming the largest design work community in India within the next five years. She is excited about upcoming projects and expansions, including the launch of HAZO, a sister company focusing on furniture, decor, and lighting. Additionally, ZAI, in partnership with Aditya Singh, will specialise in animation, augmented reality, and 3D rendering. These ventures reflect her ambition to enhance the studio's impact and showcase its creative work on a larger scale.
Jannat Chopra’s journey from Chandigarh to establishing WellThenSo Design Studio in Goa is a testament to her dedication, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Her focus on authenticity, quality, and innovative design ensures that WellThenSo continues to transform spaces and exceed client expectations. With exciting future projects on the horizon, Jannat's vision for her design studio promises to shape the future of interior design in India.

interior designer
Shradha Chodankar, founder of Aluxcre Interiors, blends minimalism with functionality in her designs. Her passion, cultural influences, and dedication have made her a sought-after interior designer in Goa.
Article by: Team ItsGoa Images by: Aluxcre Interiors

In the world of interior design, where creativity seamlessly intertwines with functionality, Shradha Chodankar stands out as a beacon of inspiration. Hailing from Thrissur, Kerala, and raised in Kankavli, Maharashtra, Shradha has made a significant mark in the vibrant design landscape of Goa through her business, Aluxcre Interiors. Her journey is a testament to her dedication, passion, and the innovative approach she brings to every project. Married to a Goan, Shradha's life is a blend of diverse cultural influences, which is vividly reflected in the unique design style of Aluxcre Interiors.
From a young age, Shradha Chodankar was deeply inclined towards the arts. While many around her followed more conventional career paths, she was always drawn to the creative world. Her passion for arts and design led her to pursue a Bachelor in Interior Design (B.I.D), which set the course for her future. This formal education provided her with both the technical skills and theoretical knowledge
required to excel in the field of interior design.
Shradha’s decision to venture into interior design was driven by her love for arts and her desire to create beautiful, functional spaces. For her, interior design was not just a career choice but a passion that allowed her creativity to flourish. She viewed it as an opportunity to do what she loved while building a lucrative career.
Shradha Chodankar’s design philosophy is deeply rooted in minimalism. She firmly believes that "less is more," which is evident in her approach to design. Her focus is always on function over form, ensuring that each space she designs is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and easy to maintain. Shradha's preference for neutral and earthy tones, combined with simple yet elegant décor, creates spaces that are both calming and inviting.

One of the key aspects of Shradha's work is her ability to understand her clients' needs. She begins each project with a detailed consultation to ensure she has a clear understanding of the space’s purpose and the client’s preferences. This client-centric approach allows her to create designs tailored to the specific requirements of each project, ensuring the final outcome aligns perfectly with the client’s vision.
Over the past four years, Shradha has worked on numerous notable projects in Goa. Among her favourites are the complete renovation of a 3BHK apartment for a former Miss India in Caranzalem, Goa, and the setup of a new IVF clinic in Patto Panjim. Each project presented its unique challenges, but Shradha’s ability to adapt and innovate ensured that the end result was nothing short of spectacular.

For Shradha, inspiration comes from various sources. Travelling to different places and experiencing diverse cultures plays a significant role in shaping her design ideas. The wide variety of architecture and interior designs found across India serve as a constant source of inspiration. Additionally, she stays updated with the latest trends by attending trade shows and following other designers and architects on social platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.
In Shradha's design process, functionality is always a priority. She ensures her designs are practical and sustainable while maintaining visual appeal. By using neutral colours and incorporating pops of colour through décor items and artwork, she creates a perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. Every piece of décor is carefully selected to complement the overall theme of the project.

Shradha’s workflow is a well-structured process ensuring efficiency and client satisfaction. It starts with a site visit and consultation to understand the client’s requirements. Following this, she moves on to the paid client onboarding process, where the design style is finalised. Shradha then creates 2D/3D models to visualise the space, followed by a detailed estimation of costs. Once everything is approved, the actual work begins on site.
Shradha believes a successful design reflects the client’s personal style. During the initial consultation, she gathers the client’s preferences and integrates them into her designs. While she advocates for functionality, Shradha is open to incorporating specific client requests, even if they differ from her usual style. By providing insights on how design choices impact aesthetic and functionality, she ensures the final design is both beautiful and practical.
The interior design industry is not without challenges. For Shradha, one of the biggest hurdles has been keeping up with the ever-changing trends. Clients often request designs they see online, not realising these might not be suitable for their space or budget. Shradha addresses this by educating her clients on the realities of design, helping them understand that what looks good online may not always be practical. Additionally, coordinating with labourers and suppliers can be challenging, but she has overcome this by collaborating with a reliable contractor.
Shradha’s work is guided by a set of design principles emphasising simplicity and elegance. Her preference for minimalistic design, neutral tones, and earthy elements creates spaces that are both timeless and contemporary. She believes in creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also sustainable and easy to maintain.

When it comes to materials, Shradha has a few favourites she often incorporates into her designs. These include wood, natural stone, veneer, and wall murals. She also has a fondness for hand-painted arts, which add a personal touch to her projects. These materials not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space but also contribute to its functionality.
Effective budgeting and resource management are crucial to the success of any project. Shradha approaches this by creating a thorough estimation based on the actual measurements at the site, with a 10-15% headroom to accommodate unforeseen expenses. She also ensures resources are managed efficiently by establishing a workflow process and maintaining proper coordination with the contractor.
For those looking to hire an interior designer, Shradha offers valuable advice. She emphasises the importance of clear communication and setting a budget from the outset. By making expectations
whose style matches their own. This helps prevent budget overruns and ensures the final design meets their needs.
Looking to the future, Shradha has ambitious goals for her career. She aims to excel in her work and develop a signature style blending modern functionality with sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Additionally, she hopes to work on a wider range of projects that allow her to showcase her creativity. In the long run, Shradha aspires to give back to society by working on projects that help local communities.
Shradha Chodankar’s journey in the world of interior design is one of passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. Her ability to blend functionality with aesthetics, while staying true to her design principles, has made her a sought-after interior designer in Goa. As she continues to innovate and inspire, there is no doubt her work will leave a lasting impact on the world of interior design.

Waterproofing your Goan villa before monsoon ensures structural safety, prevents damp damage, and enhances longevity—protecting both property value and guest comfort during heavy rains.
Owning a villa in Goa is a dream come true — but the monsoon season, while beautiful, can bring along a host of structural challenges. From torrential downpours to relentless humidity, Goa’s rains can take a toll on even the most well-built homes. The solution? Pre-monsoon waterproofing. It’s not just maintenance — it’s protection, prevention, and peace of mind. Here’s a practical guide to help you monsoon-proof your Goan villa, whether you live in it year-round or rent it as a vacation home.
Your villa’s first line of defence is the roof — and it's the most vulnerable during heavy rains.
Checklist:
Inspect for cracks, broken tiles, and pooling water areas.
Use elastomeric waterproofing coatings or polyurethane membranes on flat terraces. For sloped tiled roofs, ensure proper alignment and replace cracked tiles.
Tip: Apply waterproof sealants before June and check flashings around skylights or chimneys.
Water seepage through external walls can lead to bubbling paint, mould, and musty smells indoors.
Checklist:
Repaint exterior walls with anti-fungal, waterproof paints.
Seal cracks and joints with high-quality exteriorgrade putty.
Treat interior damp spots with waterproofing primers and anti-damp sealants. Tip: Keep furniture a few inches away from walls to prevent mould buildup during monsoon.
Window leaks and balcony flooding are common issues during Goan monsoons
Checklist:
Ensure window frames (especially wooden) are sealed with weatherproof caulking.
Use rubber seals or silicone along gaps in sliding doors.
Check balcony drain outlets — clean and cover them with mesh to avoid clogging.
Tip: Install monsoon blinds or awnings for balconies to minimise splash-back into interiors.
Low-lying villas or those with basements face higher risk of water ingress.
Checklist:
Inspect basement walls and floors for water stains or salt deposits (efflorescence).
Use crystalline waterproofing compounds for foundation walls.
Install a French drain or sump pump system for water redirection.
Tip: Waterproofing the foundation once properly can protect the structure for decades.
Checklist:
Cover pergolas or open courtyards with temporary waterproof sheets.
Clean moss from tiles and pathways to prevent slipping hazards.
Balance pool water with anti-algae treatment and keep filters running.
Tip: Use anti-slip paint or strips on wet-prone staircases and garden steps.
Waterproofing your Goan villa isn't just a maintenance ritual — it’s a smart investment in the longevity of your property. A well-prepped villa can brave the harshest rains, maintain its value, and provide uninterrupted comfort to you or your guests. Monsoon-ready homes are guest-friendly, hassle-free, and stay beautiful all year long.
Start your waterproofing prep early — ideally by April or May — and enjoy the Goan rains with zero stress.

Laterite stone defines Goan architecture with its rich history, strength, cooling properties, and affordability. Locally sourced and sustainable, it remains a preferred material for durable, climate-friendly Goan homes.
Goan homes stand out for their earthy charm, warmth, and timeless character. One of the main reasons behind this unique look is the widespread use of laterite stone. Locals have used this reddishbrown stone for centuries, and it continues to shape Goa’s architectural identity even today.
Its history, benefits, and aesthetic value make it an important building material in both traditional and modern Goan homes.
In this article, let’s explore why laterite remains a preferred choice and why architects still rely on it when creating sustainable Goan stays and homes.
Laterite stone played a major role in Goa’s architectural evolution. Builders used it in old Portuguese villas, temples, churches, and heritage mansions because it was abundant and easy to shape.
Artisans could cut the stone freshly from quarries and mould it into strong blocks using simple tools. As the stone dried, it hardened and formed sturdy walls that lasted for decades.
Many iconic structures, including old Goan houses in Fontainhas and heritage sites across the state, still stand strong due to this durable material. This long historical connection has made laterite a trusted foundation for Goan architecture.
Laterite stone is naturally strong and capable of withstanding Goa’s heavy monsoons. It resists heat, moisture, and pests, making it ideal for the tropical climate. Builders prefer it because the stone hardens over time, which increases the home’s stability.
Many traditional Goan houses have survived for over a century without major structural damage. This natural durability reduces maintenance costs as well. Homeowners do not have to worry about frequent repairs, which makes laterite a smart, long-lasting building material.
Another major reason Goan homes use laterite stone is its thermal performance. Laterite walls keep indoor spaces cool even during Goa’s hot summers. The stone absorbs heat slowly and releases it gently, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature indoors. This reduces the need for air-conditioning and supports energy-efficient living.
Many eco-conscious architects in Goa now combine laterite with sustainable design techniques to create homes that stay naturally cool all year. This makes laterite a key material for climate-friendly construction.
Laterite stone is available throughout Goa, especially in the northern belt. This local availability reduces transportation costs and makes construction more affordable. For generations, laterite has been a budget-friendly option for homeowners and builders. Its easy accessibility also supports local workers and quarry operators.
Using this stone strengthens local economies and encourages homegrown building practices. In today’s real estate market, where sustainable and costeffective choices matter, laterite continues to be a practical option for Goan homes and villa stays.

Laterite has minimal environmental impact compared to other modern construction materials. It requires very little processing and does not release harmful chemicals. This makes it a sustainable choice for builders who want to reduce carbon footprints. Many new eco-stays, homestays, and boutique villas in Goa are now combining laterite with natural materials like wood, clay tiles, and lime plaster for an eco-friendly finish. This shift highlights laterite’s growing relevance in the sustainable architecture sector of Goa.
Laterite stone gives Goan homes their signature rustic appeal. Its warm red tones, textured surface, and natural patterns add charm and authenticity. Whether it is used for compound walls, façade features, pillars, or entire structures, laterite brings character to any space.
Homeowners love it because it looks elegant and stands out beautifully against Goa’s lush greenery. Modern architects also use laterite creatively in resorts, cafes, and luxury villas to capture Goa’s heritage while keeping the design contemporary.
This unique aesthetic has made laterite an iconic element in coastal architecture.
Laterite stone is more than just a building material. It is a part of Goa’s cultural identity. Every Goan household, whether traditional or modern, feels a sense of familiarity with its earthy texture.
It reminds residents of old family homes, ancestral memories, and the state’s architectural heritage. This emotional connection further strengthens its value in local construction.
