QUEEN CONTEST

Third time’s the charm for 2021 Fair Queen

F

HARD WORK NEVER QUITS.

MICHELLE WULFSON

MWULFSON@ITEMONLINE.COM

or her senior year and final year of eligibility to compete, she’s finally walked away with the crown and a $1,000 scholarship that she will put towards her first year at Texas A&M University this fall. Though according to Riley, it’s never been about the money or title. “I really enjoy it, whether it’s win or lose, but the goal that I have had (of competing) since I was in eighth grade is what keeps me going. I’m a very goal-driven person and anything that I set out to do, I want to do it 100 percent,” Riley said. “So It’s really not the money or getting the title, it’s the experience and that goal that keeps me running and inspired to keep doing it.” Riley has been a Queens Contest competitor since 2018, building on the strong characteristics that will help her as she moves into a new phase of life at college this fall. Leading up to the competition is full of personal development for Riley, becoming sure of herself and finding confidence in who she is as a person, knowing that it’s what the judges look for in a queen that will represent the Walker County Fair across the state of Texas for the year. “I’m a completely different person than I was whenever I first ran and that’s because of the Fair Queens Contest. I’ve become so much more confident and sure of what I know and what I believe in, and I’ve grown just from the competition itself,” Riley added. Running against Cara Walker, Kelsey Drane, Jodi Hoke, Kate Philips, Bethany Brock and KeNysha Johnson, Riley notes that the competition was difficult this year, but that running against such a strong group of girls pushed her even more-so to perform her best.

Maddie Riley, center, was selected at the 2021 Walker County Fair Association Queen. Cara Walker, left, was the first runner-up and Miss Congeniality, while Jodi Hoke, right, was the second runner-up.

“When we were standing on the stage and they were calling it out, I knew that I was standing with a group of amazing girls. I’ve never seen a group of girls that performed so well and worked so hard, and I knew that each and every one of them deserved the title of the Walker County Fair Queen,” Riley said. “When they finally announced it, all of those years of hard work since my eighth grade year finally paid off and it didn’t become real to me until a few days after.” Being crowned as the Walker County Fair Queen extends beyond fair week. As an advocate and a role model, the job is not always glamorous, but the queen serves as the face of the Walker County Fair and represents its morals to the best of her abilities. “People know who you are and it’s your job to uphold that image and stand true to yourself and your morals. Sometimes that’s difficult, but

you just have to remember that you’re representing something a lot bigger than yourself,” Riley said. “As I’ve gone through this experience, I’ve realized how much of a role model the Walker County Fair Queen is, not just to little girls, but to everybody. Every time I was in the ring at the shows, I would just look out at the crowd and every little kid was just staring at me. I would wave, and they’d wave back, and that was my favorite part, knowing that the little kids just loved every bit of it and they were so excited to see me. I knew I was making a difference in their lives, even if it was just five seconds spent with them in a picture, they’ll always remember that and that is something that is the most special to me.” The experience has helped her gain a whole new sense of appreciation for the fair and the people who are in it, and keeps her inspired to return to the

fair in the future to give back, naming serving as a WCFA board member as a possibility, or helping young girls run for Fair Queen. As for future queen contestants, Riley advises that the contest is not about looks or appearances, but rather perseverance, confidence, passion, originality and staying true to oneself is what will impress the judges. “I think people often view that competition as a beauty contest, but really, it’s so much personal and character development that I wouldn’t have been able to get anywhere else. So just step outside of your comfort zone and just be who you want to be, do it 100 percent, and people will love you for it,” Riley said. While the queen’s duties were cut short at this year’s fair week due to COVID-19 restrictions, Riley will get to enjoy the public’s company at the cook-off, fair and rodeo in May.
