The phrase “uncharted waters” is one to sum up this year as a senior in high school and as a young adult. You’re stuck between being a kid and the balancing act of learning how to be an adult, all while decisions being made are heavier and the consequences further reaching. It’s daunting, thrilling, exciting and frightening all at the same time, but necessary and worth it. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition has complicated commencements immensely for our high school’s young men and women who are graduating. However, we know our schools systems, families and community have equipped our seniors with the tools to move forward and become successful. With graduation dates ranging from mid-May to late July, some seniors may not get the chance to walk across the stage during a commencement ceremony. We don’t know when parents who have worked tirelessly to push their kids through these formative years will experience the pride of seeing them with a diploma in hand. Fewer graduation parties will be held, and COVID-19 is interfering with plans for senior trips and even the fall. While it is certainly a tough time for everyone, our communities in Walker County have banded together to offer support and encouragement to the hundreds of seniors who have finally made it to the end of their high school careers. Our seniors have fought hard and world awaits for our upcoming leaders. What an accomplishment! Congratulations to the Class of 2020. If you’ve managed to navigate these unprecedented times and now you can do anything.
