Ieri sera ero a New York, nei bicchieri quasi vuoti di un ristorante che frequento spesso. I commensali parlavano di me con parole appropriate. Mi conoscevano bene. Ma non del tutto, pensavo. Pensavo che mi sarebbe piaciuto parlargli di me prima di essere me. Potergli raccontare tutto quello che c’è molto prima di riempire un bicchiere, e che non finisce con un bicchiere vuoto. La mia memoria.
Last night I was in New York, in the almost empty glasses of a restaurant where I find myself quite frequently. Guests were speaking of me with appropriate words. They knew me well. But they didn’t know everything, I thought. I thought that I would have enjoyed talking to them about me, before I become myself. I would have liked to tell them about all that exists before one fills a glass, and all that does not end in an empty glass. My memory.

Guardo le mani del sommelier aprire la mia bottiglia. Si muovono con garbo, delicatamente. Gli ospiti osservano i suoi gesti con attenzione. Sembra che lo facciano anche i loro bicchieri ancora vuoti. L a scena mi suggerisce una parola precisa: rispetto. Una parola che è parte fondamentale della mia vita.
I look at the hands of the sommelier opening my bottle. They move gracefully. The guests observe his gestures carefully. It seems as if even the glasses, still empty, are doing so. The scene makes me think of a word in particular: respect. A word that is an essential part of my life.

Mi piace, vedere le coppie quando non toccano più terra. I loro sguardi portano entrambi al disopra di ogni altra cosa intorno. Io, testimone compiacente di questi attimi sottolineati da brevi sorsi distratti, faccio la mia parte, aggiungendo la gioia all ’emozione. Questo è l ’amore. Che non ha vita lunga se dimentica il rispetto per l ’altro.
I like watching couples when they no longer touch ground. Both follow the other’s eyes above every other thing surrounding them. I am the obliging witness of these moments marked by short distracted sips. I play my part, adding joy to the emotion. This is love. Which won’t last long if one forgets the importance of respect for one another.

Il fuoco nel camino muove le luci nella stanza. Dentro il bicchiere posato accanto alla tastiera osservo le mani della donna trasformare in parole i suoi pensieri. È un mondo d ’invenzioni che prende forma, silenziosamente. Perché l ’intelligenza non fa mai rumore, non ne ha bisogno. Vive in ognuno di noi, discreta ma pronta a rispondere quando chiamata. Bisogna farlo con garbo, e con tutto il rispetto che le dobbiamo.
The fireplace directs the lights in the room. Inside a glass placed beside the keyboard, I observe the woman’s hands transforming her thoughts into words. It’s a world of inventions taking shape. Because intelligence never makes a sound. It doesn’t need to. It lives in each one of us, discreet, but ready to answer when summoned. We must do so gracefully, and with all the respect we owe it.

Tonight the terrace is an exceptional stage for the show that Tokyo enacts in the spring. The party is at its best, thanks to a diffused beauty perceived by every sense. Wherever the eyes move, they find enjoyment. But it’s something bigger than pure aesthetic pleasure. There’s more than admiring a cherry tree in blossom, or the perfect face of a woman. Beauty is a vital partner for the soul. And it deserves respect.
