VENTICINQUE ANNI DI LUCE Venticinque vendemmie raccontate attraverso le esperienze e i valori sui quali Luce si fonda: il rispetto per una terra unica e per le persone che vi lavorano, per la curiosità e l’intelligenza di chi ha dato corpo a questa visione nel tempo; per la bellezza come linfa vitale, perché il bello alimenta la nostra capacità di fare bene.
Luce inizia 25 anni fa quando, insieme alla famiglia Mondavi, abbiamo trovato “casa” a Montalcino, territorio di elezione per la produzione di grandi vini. Sono state la tradizione e le nostre precedenti esperienze a indicarci la strada e con Luce abbiamo cercato di dare un’interpretazione molto personale, rimescolando le carte senza lasciarci mai vincolare dal passato, ma facendone tesoro. Siamo partiti da una proprietà a sud-ovest del comprensorio di Montalcino che aveva le caratteristiche perfette per dare corpo e vita alla nostra visione: la vicinanza al mare, l’esposizione al sole e l’unicità del suolo la rendono una terra magnetica. Un luogo capace di attirare a sé e coinvolgere persone di talento, che con le loro esperienze e la loro determinazione hanno dato vita a Luce anno dopo anno. Ho sempre cercato di stimolare i miei collaboratori, motivandoli e spronando la loro curiosità e intelligenza, doti che si traducono, prima di tutto, nel non essere mai appagati, raggiungendo un obiettivo e portando sempre dietro quella dose di insoddisfazione che ci fa aspirare immediatamente al traguardo successivo, alimentando un continuo miglioramento. L’unicità della Tenuta Luce a Montalcino è qualcosa di vitale e prezioso: è la bellezza della natura, cui l’uomo si ispira, fatta di equilibrio e armonia, ed è proprio nel rispetto di questa natura che ci circonda che conduciamo i vigneti, lasciando crescere i boschi e modulando i nostri interventi. La cantina ipogea di Tenuta Luce e il giardino che la sormonta sono stati concepiti inserendosi e vivendo in armonia con il paesaggio. Questo è Luce: equilibrio, armonia e bellezza. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF LUCE Twenty-five years illustrated through the experiences and the values on which Luce is based: the respect for a unique land and for the people who work here, for the experimentations and intelligence of those who gave shape to this vision over time; for beauty, which is a vital component, because beauty nourishes our ability to do good things.
Luce was born 25 years ago when, together with the Mondavis, we found a “home” in Montalcino, a region with an exceptional vocation for producing fine wines. Tradition and our previous experiences showed us the way, and with Luce we wanted to give a very personal interpretation, shuffling the cards, but treasuring the past without allowing it to limit us. We started from a plot, south-west of the area of Montalcino which had the perfect characteristics to give shape and life to our vision: the closeness of the sea, the exposure to the sun, and the uniqueness of the soil make this a magical land. A land capable of attracting and engaging talented people who through their skills and determination gave life to Luce, year after year. I’ve always tried to encourage my collaborators, to motivate them and stimulate their curiosity and intelligence. These gifts, first of all, lead to a feeling of never being content: reaching a goal always results in the urge to move on to the next objective, nourishing a desire for constant improvement. The uniqueness of Tenuta Luce in Montalcino is something vital and precious: it’s the beauty of nature, inspiring people, a beauty made of balance and harmony. It is through respect for the environment which inspires us that we work the vineyards, let the woods grow and adjust our operations. The underground winery at Tenuta Luce and the garden on top were conceived so that they would be a part of and live in harmony with the landscape. This is Luce: balance, harmony and beauty. I PRIMI VENTICINQUE ANNI DI LUCE
La storia di Luce nasce da un incontro. Erano gli inizi degli anni Novanta quando Vittorio Frescobaldi e Robert Mondavi scelsero Montalcino, una terra nota per la sua vocazione enologica, e decisero di unire le proprie esperienze per avviare insieme un progetto visionario. Furono affiancati fin dall’inizio dai rispettivi figli, Lamberto e Tim, entrambi giovani enologi. Il loro desiderio era fare un vino che andasse oltre i confini della tradizione, senza tuttavia rinnegarla. L’esperienza maturata fin dagli anni ’70 con i vigneti di Merlot impiantati su quei terreni, e la conoscenza delle loro peculiarità espressive si rivelarono fondamentali per concretizzare quella visione. Il vino da cui tutto ha avuto inizio fu concepito come l’armonico punto d’incontro tra l’eleganza e la struttura del Sangiovese, il vitigno autoctono di questa zona, e la rotondità e la

pienezza del Merlot. Le prime due vendemmie di Luce, la 1993 e 1994, furono presentate insieme nel 1997, suscitando fin da subito grande curiosità e interesse per la concezione innovativa che caratterizzava l’intero progetto. Per i tre anni successivi alla prima vendemmia, il lavoro si è concentrato nel dare concretezza a quella visione attraverso la produzione di un grande vino. Nel 1996 fu scelto anche il nome, Luce della Vite. Un nome che evocava la luce di Montalcino, la luce del sole che è fonte di vita e nutrimento, che segna il passaggio delle stagioni e dà il ritmo a ogni attività agricola. Lo studio iconografico spinse a individuare come simbolo di questo vino il sole raggiato che si trova sull’altare maggiore della chiesa di Santo Spirito a Firenze, costruita nel XVI secolo su un terreno donato alla città dalla famiglia Frescobaldi. Questo simbolo percorre tutta la tradizione toscana con il suo dualismo radicale, in cui cristiano e pagano, sacro e profano si compenetrano; lo stesso dualismo che ha ispirato l’armonia di Luce. Il progetto ha continuato a svilupparsi nel corso degli anni: due acquisizioni successive tra il 2001 e il 2016, nuovi impianti di vigneti, nuove sfide. Dal 2005, con la fine della joint venture con i Mondavi, Lamberto è al timone del progetto a cui si dedica con grande passione, dirigendone gli orientamenti produttivi, dalla vigna alla creazione dei blend di ogni annata. Altri vini, nel corso degli anni, hanno affiancato Luce: nel 1998 è stato presentato Lucente, anch’esso blend di Merlot e Sangiovese, risultato di una selezione delle porzioni di vigneto maggiormente vocate alla produzione di un vino dal profilo fruttato e di grande piacevolezza. Nel 2003, da un vigneto di Sangiovese le cui caratteristiche riuscivano a esprimere appieno l’eleganza e la struttura di questa varietà, è nato Luce Brunello, un personale omaggio alla tradizione di Montalcino. Infine, con la vendemmia 2015, una distintiva ed esclusiva interpretazione dello stesso terroir di Luce ha dato vita a Lux Vitis, che ha unito al Cabernet Sauvignon una piccola parte di Sangiovese. Con l’ultimo ampliamento, Tenuta Luce si è dotata anche di una nuova cantina, una struttura ipogea sul cui tetto poggia un giardino. L’insieme è stato concepito per far maturare e custodire i nostri vini rispettando il paesaggio e la natura circostanti, per fondersi con essi in perfetto equilibrio e rappresentare l’armonia che ci contraddistingue.

THE FIRST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF LUCE
The history of Luce starts with a meeting. It was the early Nineties when Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi chose Montalcino, a land known for its vocation for viticulture, and decided to join their experiences and start a visionary project. Right from the start, they were supported by their respective sons, Lamberto and Tim, both young oenologists. Their wish was to make a wine that would go beyond the borders of tradition, but without denying it. The experience acquired since the Seventies with the vineyards of Merlot planted in these plots, and the knowledge of their expressive uniqueness proved to be essential to make that vision come true. The wine from which it all began was conceived as the harmonious meeting point between the elegance and structure of Sangiovese, the local native varietal, and

the roundness and fullness of Merlot. Luce’s first harvests, in 1993 and 1994, were presented together in 1997, immediately stimulating curiosity and interest for the innovative concept of the entire project. In the three years that followed the first harvest, the work focused on making their vision concrete by producing a great wine. In 1996 they chose the name, Luce della Vite. A name that recalled the light in Montalcino, the light of the sun, a source of life and nourishment, which marks the passing of the seasons and gives a rhythm to every farming activity. The iconographic search led to finding the emblem of this wine in the radial sun on the high altar of the church of Santo Spirito in Florence, built in the 16th Century on a plot donated to the city by the Frescobaldi family. The same emblem is part of the Tuscan tradition with its radical dualism, in which the Christian and the pagan, the sacred and the profane meet. The same dualism that also inspired the harmony of Luce. The project continued to grow, developing over the years: two acquisitions between 2001 and 2016, new vineyards, new challenges. In 2005, when the joint venture with Mondavi ended, Lamberto Frescobaldi took the helm. Since then, he has directed the production with great passion, from the vineyard to the making of each year’s blends. Other wines, over the years, joined Luce: in 1998 Lucente was presented, another blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, the result of a selection of portions of the vineyard that had a stronger vocation for fruity and very pleasant wines. In 2003, from a vineyard of Sangiovese whose characteristics fully express the elegance and structure of this variety, Luce Brunello was born, a personal tribute to the tradition of Montalcino. Finally, with the 2015 harvest, a distinctive and exclusive interpretation of the same terroir of Luce gave life to Lux Vitis, uniting Cabernet Sauvignon and a small part of Sangiovese. With the latest acquisition, Tenuta Luce equipped itself with a new winery too, an underground structure with a garden above its roof. It was conceived to preserve the wines and let them age while respecting the surrounding landscape and nature, so that it would blend in a perfect balance, and represent the harmony that is emblematic of our philosophy.
