Auguste Choisy The derivation of the DORIC order from timber construction from Histoire de la Architecture, 1899

Ongoing investigation The Doric order is the earliest of the orders of architecture developed by the Greeks and the one that they employed for most buildings. The type had arrived at a definite form in the 7th cent. B.C., but further improvements produced the perfected order of the 5th cent. B.C. as it appeared in the Parthenon and the Propylaea at the Acropolis of Athens.

origem em formas de madeira.

It is generally believed that the column of this order and its capital derive from an earlier architecture in wood. The cornice details, which have a resemblance to carpentry forms, have also led to the theory of its origin in wooden forms. The roman architect Vitruvius defended this origin in his architectural treaty De Architectura

Many of the historical investigation around this theme searches sources to support this transformation from a constructive system in wood to a petrous simile. Some of that investigation proposes comparative reconstructions of the two constructive systems, evidencing the formal similarities between them. More seldom the transformation process is studied in itself.

It seems probable that the intermediate moments of the transformation, surely slow, hybrids in which the two systems cohabitated, imposed on the stone the obligation to relate with the existing wood constructions, continuing its shape and scale, and ultimately, slowly, resulting in the remarkable Doric order. This path of relationship of architecture with matter and the dynamics that build it, this possibility of invention and integration in deep levels of the material condition of architecture, in some way traverses the work of MXTstudio in the last years.
