Despite that direction, it s possible to find in the remaining quadrants, some relevant moments, either in the south, in the sea, like the Bugio lighthouse, or the cliffs of Costa da Caparica, either in the land side, to the north, along the Caparide stream, this last ones visible only from higher heights.

The possibility to propose a residential building next to a garden was the initial finding in the project development, followed by the hypothesis of extending the garden to the flats themselves. What is important the close contact with light and air, with the light filtered by the leaves of trees and the air tempered and scented by the flowering of the various plants. The contact with the rhythm of seasons, patent in the plants, its change over the year, always diverse and rich. The building accommodates itself to the west, leaving the largest possible portion of terrain along the stream. Certainly the opposite side of the stream any intervention must also keep it free. It's this strategy of maximum distance from any construction to the east that allows us to assure in the long term the existence of an unexpectedly large space for the garden. It is in this garden that the project begins, in the will to literally take it to all the apartments, even to reinforce it till all the apartments dilute in it. The garden level is the place to all the communal spaces. This vocation fins expression in a solution in witch all the common functions of the building find their location in the garden, from the more protected access spaces (specially those for the cars) to the more exposed, as is the case with the pool, solarium and veranda over the stream. Between this extremes, respectively to the west and to the east in the terrain, under the building, exist also some common functions as a small SPA, gymnasium and meeting room, all with a differentiated access to allow flexible occupation and easy management.

In any domain of human activity the themes of ecology and sustainability are increasingly central. Since the theme of Bob Dylan A Hard Rain s Gonna Fall, written in 1962, a premonitory intuition shadow of environmental disaster, to the documentary Inconvenient Truth s by Al Gore, the champion of our time in the defense of sustainability, we accompanied the evolution of a global consciousness about the consequences of our actions. The most recent and significant expression of the insurmountable centrality of this theme is the already shown interest of President Barack Obama, which culminated in the U.S. adhesion to the Kyoto Protocol, and even in its review, making his goals even more demanding. From all points of view, Ecological, Economic, Social, etc. it s increasingly imperative that concerted global strategies address the increasingly worrying consequences of our activities on the environment. Regarding the building, Energy Efficiency is the most visible face, though not the only one, of these concerns around the sustainability, informing new paradigms of architectural project, which from the beginning of their design can integrate design strategies to optimize resources and environmental construction, usually with increased comfort and drastic reduction of energy consumption. The appropriateness of the solutions to implement global strategies to reduce energy consumption and taking advantage of all opportunities available in the surrounding environment, seems to be the only way that makes sense globally, taking into account the various constraints that the intervention site presents.

Thermal Behavior The climatic analysis allows us to highlight some peculiarities in the climate of S. Pedro do Estoril: a mild climate most of the year, with average monthly temperatures of 11 C in the colder months and 21 C in the warmer months, with plenty of sunlight and availability of wind during most of the year. The proposed intervention imposes rigorous selection of materials and architectural solution. The existence of large glassed areas in the building envelope must be seen as a key element in the building thermal relations.

During the warm seasons the slabs on the upper floors provide some shade protection to the windows. However, to improve the quality of interior spaces the selected glass will have a low emissive finish to limit excessive solar gains. The use of natural light, systematically admitted by more than a front to the various spaces, is an important and positive factor in reducing energy consumption. The thermal inertia available in the building structure, can and should be used in active mode. Its use not only free, if integrated into the concept of architecture, as greatly increases the comfort of the spaces, keeping the temperature more stable, and over a longer period of time. The availability of wind during a high number of hours in the mid-seasons and in summer morning and evening periods allows the use of cross-section natural ventilation, for thermal comfort. This reduces significantly the costs of air conditioning, while creating an interior environment with higher quality. The patio space between the two wings maximizes the flow of natural ventilation thanks to the reduction of distance between opposing facades, and also allows its pretreatment using some natural phenomena such as the evapotranspiration of plants capable of cooling the air temperature in summer, even before it enters the building. The use of vegetation with some size, both in the garden and in central courtyard, increases the shaded area, decreasing the temperature in summer, and improving the ability to ventilate the interior of the apartments during times when the wind does not exist or is reduced taking advantage of the chimney effect in courtyard itself and the use of natural ventilation induced by the use of solar towers on the roof. These solar towers are nothing more than places where the air is heated by the sun inducing a chimney effect which in turn will activate the natural exhaustion of air from the apartments, increasing the natural circulation of air.
