The terrain for the construction of the Nautical Centre of Abrantes is located on a hillside predominantly oriented to the southeast. The landscape is vast and impressive, marked by the channel of the river and by the road and rail bridges that cross it. From there one can also see the silhouette of the castle dominating the skyline, the profile of buildings in the historical center and the hospital. Being positioned in a part of the city where one notices a recent growth of the urban fabric, there co-exist quite different scales of buildings from houses to warehouses or multi-family buildings and still survive large areas of olive groves. We started from a simple shape, strong and easily recognizable, an equilateral triangle. After all, we need only three facades to establish relationships with the environment. Slender with proportions in the limits of the possible, boats are actually challenging the present with its lightness, speed and accuracy. Subtly it suggested the texture of the Nautical Center building facades and roof. Built in 1889, with french engineering from the Eiffel school, it has a hollow beam with a current design at the time, standing out the exhaustive repetition of the same building element, the cross of St. Andrew. This exhaustive repetition, decision informed by structural calculation models most advanced at the time of the construction, resulted in a rich and vibrant texture. One hypothesis we studied quickly gained advantage over all others, the construction of elements in composite materials of fibers reinforced resins. This technique proved to be quite adequate because it allows the execution of structural elements with great lengths, high load capacity and extremely light, at very competitive costs thanks to the enormous repetition of identical parts. Another advantage is the large possible length of the parts and reduced weight allowing to reduce the support structures, in steel, required throughout the building, increasing the distance between supports without additional costs, which in the case of the warehouse area proves to be extremely advantageous . In fact increasing the distance between supports in the warehouse space results in virtually free floor plan, unconstrained for the occupancy by the various types of boats that will shelter there.
