Couple found in unlawful posession of Sassa cards and Identity Documents BABALWA NDLANYA A MARRIED couple was arrested by the Centane police on Saturday, July 11 for contravention of the national credit act, when they were found with Identity Documents, Sassa cards and bank cards for different people in the Maxhama location in Centane. Police were acting on information that the couple

was committing crime with the documents of other people. Police Spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha said police recovered 143 identity documents, 12 bank cards, 16 Sassa cards of different people and an undisclosed amount of money from the suspects’ home.

“Both suspects have been charged with contravention of the national credit act,” said Manatha.

Guards die of smoke inhalation BABALWA NDLANYA TWO security guards from Butterworth died after inhaling smoke from a homemade heater (imbawula) on Saturday, July 11.

A third guard was rushed to hospital where he is recovering.

The guards were found by a colleaugue reporting for duty in the guard room at their place of work in Butterworth.

Police Spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha said there was a homemade heater (imbawula) inside the room.

“The guards did not have visible injuries and it is suspected that they had inhaled smoke from the fire and died. The identities of both guards are being withheld until their families had been notified.” He said no foul play was suspected.

The campaign was about fighting crime and to educate men and boys about domestic violence. Members of the community came out in numbers to support the event and the day was made successful by officials from the government departments who went all out.

Chief Jongilizwe Luzipho from Tholeni said they were happy to receive lessons from the different government departments. “This will make the work easier now because no one will go to the police to report matters that are not important. We were told which things to report.”

He said even when they were hosting an iMbizo, they would make sure that they re-

minded people about what they had been told during the awareness campaign.

Luzipho said Traditional Leaders also had a duty to educate people about the seriousness of committing crime, including domestic violence. He urged parents to educate their children and to stop relying on the police and traditional leaders. “If you don’t tell your child what is right or wrong, then who will do it for you?,” he asked.

One of the community members who attended, Lungile Madikizela, said they were given a lot of information which would help them to educate their own communities.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Luxolo Tyali, said the awareness campaigns were started in 2009 and they were still continuing with them in partnership with the police, Traditional Leaders and different government departments.

“Our aim is to raise awareness and to educate people about domestic violence and other things related to crime.”

Initiate deaths ‘completely unnecessary’ SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE

Siyongwana, has been running an initiation school here, since 2009 and, according to him, has never had any deaths as a result of initiation-related procedures.

Siyongwana describes initiate deaths owing to circumcision as “completely unnecessary” and feels that these deaths could be prevented.

At the time of going to print, at least 32 initiates had died in the Eastern Cape.

Apart from the fatalities during this year’s winter initiation season, at least 131 initiates had been hospitalised, while scores of others are being kept at rescue centres throughout

the province.

According to Siyongwana, everything depended on the traditional surgeon’s respect and honour for his work. He said it was also extremely important for parents to be involved throughout the initiation process.

“Parents must take the time to check out the place where their children would be circumcised. They should never just give money to a surgeon and then take a back seat,” he said.

A number of illegal initiation schools had been closed down, while a number of illegal traditional surgeons had been arrested in the Pondoland region.

Siyongwana, who had 37 initiates this year, said there should be open communication between the surgeon and his traditional nurses (amakhankatha). According to him, stran-

gers should not be allowed to visit the initiates. “The only people who should be allowed to visit, are relatives who need not spend a long time at ‘ebhomeni’ (initiation school).”

Proper behaviour at initiation schools was also highlighted by Siyongwana. “There should be no smoking or drinking of alcohol.

The traditional surgeons must closely observe their boys and create a platform where initiates are able to express themselves, so that it would be easy to sense if there was a problem which affected any of the initiates.”

He said there should always be an open communication channel between surgeon and initiates and that surgeons had to teach initiates about the passage to manhood.

He stressed that surgeons should have a passion to perform the custom and not do it for the money. According to him, traditional

leaders should allow legal surgeons to open initiation schools in their areas.

During the provincial initiation launch in Mthatha Nkosi Ngangomhlaba Matanzima stressed his discontent over the traditional surgeons who conducted circumcisions while drunk. Spokesperson for the Department of Traditional Affairs, Mamkeli Ngam, said rescue centres played a cardinal role in the reduction of a number of deaths.

He said a summit on circumcision in the Eastern Cape would be held in September, with the aim of reducing the high death rate. . Siyongwana entered ubungcibi after two boys on his rugby team at Excesior Senior Secondary School died during circumcision.

He then decided to intervene, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Duma ‘Sandaveyisi’ Oliver Makhalima.

Family is looking for missing son BABALWA NDLANYA THE family of a young man from Mgcwe location in Ngqamakhwe is having sleepless nights ever since their son went missing in 2009.

He disappeared when he was on his way to work at a Construction Company in Johannesburg.

Nolubabalo Tshingila (46) said ever since her son, Simphiwe Tshingila, (27) disappeared, she still has hope in her heart that she would find him again one day. “It is hard for us to sleep. When the weather is bad we always think of his whereabouts,” said Tshingila.

She said her son went missing when he left home to live in Kliptown in Soweto with the intention of looking for employment. She said within a week he found employment at a construction company. “My son was not familiar with travelling by train to work. On the day (July 10, 2009) he went missing, he

went to work with his friend, as usual.”

She said his friend told her that Simphiwe got off at Orlando East Station, which was not the right station for him to get off. “His friend said he thought he would manage to go to work even though he got off at a wrong station, but that never happened. The friend reported the matter to me.”

Tshingila said she then went to the Orlando Police Station to look for her son, since she thought maybe he had been arrested, but he was not there. She said she even went to mortuaries and into hospitals to look for him, but she couldn’t find him anywhere.

According to her, ever since her son’s disappearance, she had developed high blood pressure. “I only put trust in God now because He is the only one who can come with the answer to our prayers.”

Police Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kay Makubela, said he would investigate the matter. “Since he disappeared in 2009 it may take some time to get information from the police, but I will find out and let you know,” he said.

Communities asked to make a difference on Mandela Day

YANDISA POPPY DLEMBULA AS part of walking in the footsteps of the late Nelson Mandela, the Alfred Nzo District Municipality called on all residents to unite in making a difference on Mandela Day (July 18).

The four local municipalities of the Alfred Nzo District – Mbizana, Umzimvubu, Ntabankulu and Matatiele – shares the same goals and objectives for this day, urging people to spend their 67 minutes of doing good for others and to observe the legacy and devotion of Nelson Mandela.

The African Continent and the rest of the World will celebrate the life of Mandela in a humanitarian way as he devoted his entire life, practising and encouraging peace among South Africans.

Ntabankulu Local Municipal mayor, Vusi Mgoduka, Mbizana Local Municipal mayor, Makhaya Twabu and Umzumvubu mayor, Khulukazi Pangwa, all agreed that Nelson Mandela Day plays a pivotal role in the history of this country and that the day should be celebrated constructively.

Ayabulela Zadunge from Bizana said that she is going to help out at one of the elderly centres in her village, since she knew that the elderly people needed love and support.

“I will be helping with the cleaning and cooking, just to show my appreciation for the freedom our grandparents fought for,” added Zadunge.

Alfred Nzo District Municipality mayor, Eunice Diko, concluded by encouraging communities, especially young people, to be involved in municipal programmes.

tiele donated 186 school desks, 186 chairs, a set of soccer goal posts and a set of netball poles to the school. “As a responsible corporate citizen we are committed to ploughing back into the community whenever possible,” said Manuel. Manuel also presented netball and soccer balls to the captains of the first soccer and netball teams at a ceremony attended by school principal Christopher Mfunda and vice

principal Mandiseli Majikijela, as well as members of the school governing body.

Presenter on a mission to help youth BABALWA NDLANYA A YOUNG man from Dalaguba in Libode wants to assist youngsters dreaming of becoming actors.

The Director and the founder of Bavu Drama Theatre & Performing Art, Nkosomzi Bavu (28), started this theatre with the intention of mentoring talented youth wishing to become actors.

Talking to Express, Bavu – who is also a presenter at Unitra Community Radio (UCR) in Mthatha – said he had started this theatre in 2005. The Theatre caters for all forms of art, including acting, dance, musical theatre, poetry, story telling and visual art.

“My aim is to find talent among the youth, especially at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU). My intention is to plough back here, because I obtained my degree from WSU,” said Bavu.

According to him, students from WSU were showing interest in participating in his Theatre. Bavu said they had been going to Bloemfontein to participate in the Tshintsha Ma Afrika Programme since 2012. They had also performed at festivals in Cape Town, Grahamstown, East London and Stutterheim.

She said during July, nine groups that were recorded at the Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre, would be marketed throughout the country.

“We will further record eight new artists with special focus on indigenous music and jazz.

“An amount of R2.5 million has been set aside for music development. We strongly urge you to support our artists by saying

‘no’ to piracy,” stressed Majodina.

She also disclosed that an amount of R26 million had been set aside to promote social cohesion.

“We shall involve stakeholders from diverse socio-political and linguistic backgrounds in all the festivals and commemoration of national days.

“These events and festivals serve as platforms for our artists to showcase their talent and diverse expertise, which include: National Art Festival (NAF) in Cacadu District Municipality, Isingqi Sethu Wild Coast Festival in OR Tambo District Municipality, and Shukuma Dance and Drama Festival in Nelson Mandela Bay.” She said the department would be hosting choral music competitions, starting with build-ups in the eight districts, culminating in a Provincial OR Tambo Choral Music Festival.

Safa pledges funds for the Mthatha Stadium SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE THE Vice President of the South African Football Association (Safa), Elvis Shishane, has announced – during a recent visit to Libode – that Safa would be giving the Mthatha Stadium a financial injection to make it a fully functional facility.

The Mthatha Stadium was built in 2010, as one of the base centres for some squads that were camping in the Eastern Cape to participate in the 2010 World Cup, but unfortunately no club had used the stadium. Even after the world cup, the stadium had not been used, until Blackburn Rovers entered into negotiations with the KSD municipality to host some of its home games here.

The Rovers played a few of their games in the stadium, before the club was bought by a businessman from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) last season. Since the club was now hosting its home games in KZN, the Mthatha Stadium has once again become a white elephant.

“There is no way that such a beautiful facility could be a white elephant while there is an abundance of talent in the region, as well as thousands of soccer-hungry supporters.

“I put my neck on the block that Safa will contribute to ensure that the stadium is useful,” said Shishane.

He stressed that he would address the issue with Safa’s executive committee and would emphasise that the stadium should be used to benefit the people of the OR Tambo region as per the initiatives launched prior to the 2010 soccer world cup.

Safa’s President in the OR Tambo region, Xolile Nkompela, revealed that he had a vision for the stadium. He said it was his mission to host big clubs in the near future and young squads from the South Africa Football Association.

Safa Vice President Elvis Shishane committed himself to assisting to make sure that Mthatha stadium is being used.
