Cell replica honours Madiba AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA

ell 46664 became a tangible reality for many, when a replica of the former late President Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison cell was unveiled at the Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre in Qunulast Friday. The cell was temporarily opened to mark a

year since the passing of Tata Mandela. The replica of the cell – built by the South African National Defence Force in the Western Cape in partnership with the Robben Island Museum – affords communities to have an understanding of Nelson Mandela’s life in prison. Handing over the replica cell, Defence and Military Veterans Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, said the cell was brought to Qunu to make up for the unfairness the people of

the Eastern Cape felt during Tata’s funeral last year. “We understand that you were not all allowed to be part of the funeral and you felt you were never given enough chance to mourn for your lost son, so with this replica cell, we want you to get in touch with Tata,” said Mapisa-Nqakula. Mapisa-Nqakula said the replica was also brought to Qunu, because they understood that not everyone was able to go to Robben

Island to see the real cell. The day was characterised by a series of events and activities, including a fun walk. Premier Phumulo Masualle said, that a year later, they were pausing to take stock of what Mandela’s legacy stands for. “As a year has passed without uTata in our midst. We are here at Qunu to take stock and ask once again what we could learn from our struggle icons like Sisulu, Mbeki, Tambo and many others,” said Masualle.

Oliver Tambo’s sister (84) dies after illness PHINDILE GQELE AFTER a long illness, the late Oliver Tambo’s only surviving sister, Getrude Tambo (84) has passed away in the St Patrick’s hospital on Saturday, December 6. This was confirmed by Tambo family spokesperson Mzukisi Tambo on Monday. Getrude spent all her life in the village of Nkantolo, promoting development in the name of her late brother, Oliver Tambo. Mzukisi said it was unfortunate that she

had passed away without witnessing Oliver’s remains being brought from Gauteng to Nkantolo village. Mzukisi said Getrude had been sick since early November, after the burning of his brother’s statue and photographs at a garden of remembrance preserving his legacy. “Getrude was fond of her brother’s belongings and seeing those belongings being demolished could make a person suffer from serious health problems,’ said Mzukisi. Getrude was one of the Tambo family members who wanted Oliver’s remains to be

brought from Gauteng to be reburied next to his late parents in his home village of Nkantolo. She believed it would put his spirit to rest at his ancestral home and that Tambo’s spirit was troubled where he is currently buried Getrude is survived by four sons and a host of grandchildren. She will be buried at Nkantolo village on Saturday December, 13 . The late Getrude Tambo. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Chairperson of the Women’s Forum, Xolelwa Gwayi, said women and children should be respected at all times. “Parents should treat children equally. ‘No’ means ‘no’, and men should know that when a woman says ‘no’ he should not force himself on her. “Women and children are the victims of abuse. They should be told and encouraged to report any kind of abuse,” said Gwayi. Police Spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, said

Blankets a welcome gift for elderly BABALWA NDLANYA IN celebrating their 40-year birthday, the Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme brought smiles to the elderly and youngsters of Cala by giving 28 blankets and soccer kit to a local club. The presentation of the blankets and soccer kit was made during an end-of-year function where the elderly were treated to a party with a birthday cake and other refreshments.

Not only were they given blankets, but the boys also received a soccer kit with the aim of motivating them to stick to playing football rather than going around committing crime. The Chief Administrator of the Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme, Nwabisa Gwiliza, said they were ploughing back into the community, as they played a major role in supporting their business. “We always make sure that we respect people by making sure that we always fulfil our promises. We chose to close the year in the

areas where we have funeral parlours, which is why we are in Cala today,” said Gwiliza. She also told community members of Sakhisizwe Municipality to focus on businesses in order to apply the ‘Vuk’ uzenzele’ principle. She said those who have plans in their minds about business should come forward to discuss their plans so that they can look for a way forward. One of the community members, Richard Rasmeni, said they were happy about what Gwiliza had done for them, because there are

people who didn’t get gifts from their families. “Christmas will never be the same to us after we got these gifts from this scheme.” The Marketing Co-Ordinator for Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme, Mzukisi Nqubule, said they were also celebrating 40-years of the Scheme helping people. “We also hosted a similar event in Engcobo with the aim of bringing joy to the elderly. We are looking forward to ploughing back into the community since they are the ones who give us wings to fly,” said Nqubule.

Joy was written on the faces of the elderly while they received blankets from the Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme. Seen behind them are members of the Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme (from left) Ntombomzi Thabethe, Nwabisa Gwiliza, Nomfanelo Gwiliza and Mzukisi Nqubule.

Give blood to save lives this month REPORTER THE FESTIVE season is fast approaching – a time when relaxation, gifts and family are on the minds of many. However, it is also a time when for many, the demands of our day-to-day life still continue, like in the case of doctors who work hard at saving lives and in most cases can only do so with the help of blood and blood products. “Traditionally December are a difficult time for the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), as we

are unable to collect the 3 000 units of blood a day that is needed to treat patients, like those who are terminally ill, let alone any trauma incidents. If previous year’s blood stock levels, over the same period, are anything to go by, we know that we have some tough times ahead,” said Vanessa Raju, SANBS Communications manager. She said they want to encourage the public to find 30 minutes this holiday period to donate blood, because whilst one is relaxing and enjoying the break, one’s blood will be out there saving up to three lives. Raju said it is only possible to meet the demand with the help of regular and committed blood donors.

Netcare 911 gives beach safety tips

REPORTER THIS Festive Season people will once again have the pleasure of relaxing on our beautiful beaches. While it is a time of fun in the sun, beach goers should be mindful and cautious in order to prevent drownings during this period. Netcare 911beach safety tips: Be absolutely vigilant where small children and older individuals are concerned. Keep a watchful eye on children at all times when around water.

Swim at beaches where lifeguards are on duty and keep to the specifically demarcated areas designated for safe swimming. For your own safety swim in the areas closest to the lifeguards. Be mindful of warning signs that may indicate dangerous swimming conditions such as strong currents, sharks and other dangerous sea life as well as contaminated water. Please remember that swimming in the ocean, where there is wave action and at times dangerous currents and sea life, is very different from swimming in a pool. Young children and inexperienced swim-

mers should wear life jackets or swimming aids to ensure their safety. Be careful not to dive into water where you cannot see the bottom. It is particularly dangerous to dive into the water headfirst as you could very easily injure your neck. Check the weather report before going to the beach. Be careful of lightning in particular and do not enter the water until at least 30 minutes after the thunder and lightning has stopped. Steer clear of the ocean if you notice a choppy current with murky water. If you get pulled out to sea, stay calm and

save your energy. Allow the current to carry you for a while and then swim parallel to the shore until such time as you are out of the current. If you cannot swim to the shore, float or tread water until you are safe from the rip current. Do not be ashamed to call for help if you are in trouble. Anyone, even the best swimmers, can run into difficulties at some or other time. It is important to signal for a lifeguard as soon as possible. The best way to do so when swimming in the ocean is to raise your arm as far out of the water as you can and to wave it around. The lifeguards will be with you as soon as they can. In the interim, stay calm and try to tread water, or if possible float on your back, until they reach you. Be mindful of the waves as they are a great deal more powerful than you may think. Pay close attention to children and elderly people especially, as wave action can easily result in a loss of footing, even in shallow water. Stay sober at the beach as alcohol will not only impair your judgement, making you less careful, but it will also dehydrate you. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, use an umbrella or a tent for shade and cover yourself up during the hottest time of day, which is generally between 10h00 and 16h00. Do not make use of a flotation device such as an inflatable bed, boat, noodle and other items unless you can swim properly. If you do go boating ensure that the boat is safe and that you are wearing a lifejacket. Don’t go out so sea unless you have checked the weather conditions. When fishing be careful of walking on slippery rocks in case you lose your footing. Also be mindful of changing tides and rough seas that can knock you off the rocks. In any emergency situation the most important thing to do is contact the correct emergency number immediately. Try to memorise the number for emergency services in your area and keep the number saved on your cell phone and close to your landline telephone. In many cases, during the panic of a medical emergency, people cannot remember the correct number or cannot find where they have written it down. Otherwise contact Netcare 911 on the national number: 082 911. What to do in the event of drowning or near drowning: Get the victim out of the water as soon as possible, but do not become a victim yourself. Make sure it is safe for you to enter the water first. Handle the victim with care. Many submersion incidents are associated with neck injuries, so keep movement to the back and neck to a minimum. Assess to see if the victim is awake by asking, “Hello can you hear me?” Check for breathing by looking at the chest for no longer than 10 seconds. If the victim is not breathing or not breathing normally (i.e. gasping), call for immediate medical assistance. Call, or have someone call, a recognised medical emergency service provider such as Netcare 911 on 082 911 as soon as possible. Whoever calls for the ambulance must give the dispatcher an accurate location of the incident and a contact number at the scene. Never hang up on the operator and always return to the rescuer to inform them that you have called for help. Check for a pulse within 10 seconds; if no pulse can be found begin CPR immediately. If a definite pulse is felt provide rescue breaths (1 breath every 5 to 6 seconds). CPR is vital, even if it is an amateur administering it. Keep on doing it until someone who is trained in advanced life support arrives and can take over. All parents should learn how to administer child CPR as it differs from adult CPR. There has also recently been a worldwide revision in the CPR technique and it is important that even current first aiders be retrained according to the new protocols. According to Van Heerden, having multiple layers of safety such as a certified safety net, a fence with locked gate, a child-minder and a surface alarm around the pool and spa areas at home or around other open bodies of water can prevent accidents and drowning.

Business revives local football dreams SANELE JAMES THE Mthatha-based Gwiliza Funeral Parlour in conjunction with a national private company, Fatura SA, has revived the dreams of the Sabelani Football Club in Norwood near Mthatha. According to the coach of the club, Samkelo Daniel, the club has never received any form of assistance from the government or private sector. These two private entities recently blessed the struggling Sabelani FC with brand-new soccer kit. After seeing and holding their kit, the Sabelani hall roared with whistles and chants from the soccer stars of tomorrow alongside their parents ululating. Awie de Swardt of Futura SA and Nwabisa Gwiliza of Gwiliza Funeral Parlour confirmed that they have adopted the Norwoodbased club and they would continue assisting it where necessary. “This is the beginning, there is a lot of talent in the Norwood area, but without proper assistance and guidance they won’t get far. So we are here to pave the way for the future Bafana Bafana players,” said de Swart who is also a sportsman. The boys expressed their gratitude for an early Christmas. Unlike other communities, where only male-dominated sporting codes received recognition, the youth of Norwood is planning

on expanding their Sabelani FC into a sports association which will cater for all sporting codes, including netball. With the help of the two companies the

as we were not getting support from anyone. This is a huge step and now we want to grow the organisation for other sporting codes,” said Daniel.

Ertiga puts LUV into motoring WHEN my children were babies it was all about having a vehicle with a big boot for all those can’t-function-without accessories and equipment that come with a new addition to the family. Enter the teenage years and I soon realised that a big boot was no longer the ultimate need unless you can fit two teenagers into it. A social schedule that makes parents rather want to stay home than socialise themselves has necessitated lift clubs for all those weekend “kuiers” of our teenagers and to ease the pressure on the parents, these lift clubs almost always involve having to drive more than four teenagers around - in one trip. The solution is a seven-seater car and this past year has seen quite a few of these versatile vehicles enter the market. One of them is the new Suzuki Ertiga. The name means three-row family car in Indonesian with “er” meaning row and “tiga” meaning three. More importantly is that Suzuki calls the Ertiga a compact life utility vehicle (LUV) that links the ride and manoeuvrability of a compact car to the space, versatility and practicality of an MPV. It is based on the same (extended) platform as the highly regarded Swift compact hatchback. MPV’s or people carriers are rarely regarded as cool - by any generation. But the fact that the Ertiga looks more of a small car than an MPV

youth from this area is confident that their dreams would come true. “This is definitely a major boost for the club. Our dreams and goals were wavering

definitely counts in its favour. The designers at Suzuki has managed to create a seven-seater that would not lead to your teenager wanting to be dropped off a block away from his or her destination. And the bonus - owning and driving this car will not cost you an arm and a leg with it retailing between R159 900 and R207 900 and fuel consumption given as 6.6 litres per 100km on average. Interior The Ertiga looks deceptively compact from the outside as this LUV’s front-engined, frontwheel-drive layout allows a surprisingly generous interior. Adding to the roomy feel is the high ceiling and light beige interior (which is not my favourite colour for a mom’s taxi though). Seating in the front two rows is spacious and comfortable while the third row is definitely a bit less spacious and more suitable for children than adults on long distance trips. The three seating rows can be varied and configured for different needs. With all three seating rows in position, the luggage compartment offers 135 litres of loading space. With the third row folded down it will give you the conventional two seating rows and a generous luggage compartment with a capacity of 482 litre. Both the second and third seating rows can also be folded down to create a big car-

go area with a capacity of 736 litres. A key trait is the flat loading floor, created by folding the seating rows flat, which eases loading of long items, and the fact that the second row seat bench is split 60:40, allowing an even more versatile combination of seating and cargo space. The GL and GLX models also boasts a very practical hidden 22-litre storage space under the cargo floor. In addition, the second seat row can slide across a range of 240 mm, increasing leg room in the process as required. The sliding function also eases access to the third seating row. The Ertiga also offers ample cup holders and storage compartments, including a glove compartment, a dashboard rack, door pockets, seat back pockets and bottle holders. The combination of storage options varies between GA, GL and GLX models. Specifications The Ertiga model line-up comprises five models - all with a 1.4 litre petrol engine spanning a choice of three specification levels - GA, GL, and GLX - and either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox. The Ertiga GL and GLX models feature the comfort and practicality of extra air-conditioner vents in the ceiling for the passengers in the back. The most affordable is the GA with manual transmission. For a price of R159 900 one will get power-steering, aircon, ABS breaks and double airbags. With a price tag of R179 900 the GL manual also has a sound system with USB port, electric windows, central locking and the extra aircon vent. The GL model is also available with an automatic transmission at a price of

R194 900. The top of the range GLS models has as extras 15 inch alloy wheels, satellite controls on the steering wheel, fog lights and an improved sound system with six speakers. The GLS models cost R192 900 for the manual transmission and R207 900 for the automatic version. Ride The Ertiga is powered by Suzuki’s latest-generation fuel-injected 1,4-litre engine which has been getting good press for performance and fuel efficiency. It drives like a car and the fact that the Ertiga is a bit bigger in dimensions than the Swift doesn’t seem to put the engine under any extra pressure and it performed well during the week’s test drive. It is sure-footed with a smooth drive, even when you put your foot down on the accelerator. The gearbox was easy on the arms making gear changing a breeze – a big plus on for driving on my mom’s taxi route which is littered with speed humps. Its undercarriage and suspension are also designed to deal calmly and collectedly with potholes and poor roads. Price 1.4 1.4 1.4 1.4 1.4

The battle is on for Heroes Marathon NCEBA DLADLA THREE great Transkei professional runners are looking forward to the Heroes Marathon scheduled to take place in Mthatha on Tuesday December 16. Xolisa Tyali from KuTsolo, Zongamele Dyubeni of eNgcobo and Lungile Gongqa of Lady Frere have been training hard for this historical 42, 2km event which starts at Qunu on the Day of Reconciliation. The first prize for the runner on the finishing line is R90 000. It is sponsored by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC). “I have been training hard for this half marathon, having taken part and won the Two Oceans Marathon and the Human Rights Day Marathon earlier this year, I think I am in a position to give the other runners a hard time on the way to winning the event,” an upbeat Tyali said. Dyubeni has been winning many short-distance events outside of the Eastern Cape Province. Among others, he won the 50km Loskop Marathon in Mpumalanga, as well as

the Jakaranda City Marathon in, Tshwane, earlier this year. He said, “I’d like to win this marathon here at home, so the other runners must rest assured that they will be facing a tough time.” Gongqa won the Beach-to-Beach Marathon in East London, as well as this year’s Human Rights 10km event in East London. Gongqa said, “I won’t be there to add numbers. I’ll be taking part in the Heroes Marathon in order to win it.” While the athletes disagreed on who was going to win the Heroes Marathon, they agreed in principle with DSRAC MEC Pemmy Majodina and Athletics Transkei president Thabile Gqokoda that the winner of the Heroes Marathon 2014 – which is open to runners from across South Africa and other African countries – must come from the Eastern Cape. Hopeful runners Xolisa Tyali, Zongamele Dyubeni and Lungile Gongqa will take part in the Heroes Marathon in Mthatha on Tuesday, December 16. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

Players receive soccer kit from Funeral Scheme BABALWA NDLANYA BOYS from Sakhisizwe Municipality in Cala received soccer kit from the Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme last week at an event held at the scheme’s offices in the area. Marketing Co-ordinator for Gwiliza Group Funeral Scheme, Mzukisi Nqubule, said they decided to donatesoccer kit with the aim of supporting young boys. He said they always promote education and a crime-free society. “We want the youth to stay away from crime and focus on sport, because we know that there are those who are talent-

ed,” said Nqubule. He said they had donated soccer kit to the players who have parents who are members of the local burial society. One of the community members, Richard Rasmeni, said they were happy about the soccer kit. “We are very proud about the kit. We hope that our children will use it and make sure that they stayed focused on sport.” According to him, playing soccer was one of the weapons which helped a lot since those who took part in sport stayed away from crime and drugs. He said they would like to thank Gwiliza for the initiative of giving back to communities that support their business. MV7TUA-111214-TE-vbkmwa-meyer
