We have an amazing Welcome Committee that would like to visit you when you get to Del Tura. Why? Because we want to get to know you and for you to get to know us!
We will do our best to answer any of the thousands of questions people have when they move here and we will introduce you to ALL of the amazing activities we have to offer and to get you involved in the community which is why we are all here!
One little problem, I am meeting new residents every day that have not heard from us and I believe it is because we have not received your contact information. So, I am asking you to contact us and we will then make the effort to introduce you to all the amazing things available to you in Del Tura!
We also have a New Resident Get Together every second Tuesday of the month; however, they are in different locations each month (in order to introduce you to the community). You can visit the lobby of the Clubhouse to see the schedule in our display case or contact me and I will always invite you with a quick email personally.
Please feel free to give me a text or call at 239-770-7711 or email me at scottini6037@gmail. com in order to make sure that you are receiving information about Del Tura and the Welcome Committee events.
Welcome to Del Tura!
It has been a great summer! I have been living vicariously through everyone’s vacations on Facebook. This summer I have been to Alaska twice, Italy, Greece, Indonesia, and Hawaii to name just a few destinations. I want to thank everyone who took the time out of their busy summer schedules to visit all these wonderful
locations and share their photos with me.
We are entering the last half of hurricane season. This is traditionally the time of year when the most storms form and cause the most damage. Please be prepared; have a plan in place and your hurricane kit ready should a storm hit.
In addition to the suggestion boxes in the Starlight Ballroom and the HOA Office, you can email your suggestions to us at DTHOASuggestionBox@gmail.com. Please include your NAME, STREET ADDRESS and PHONE NUMBER along with the issue you would like the HOA to address.
Briefly describe your issue/concern and any possible solutions. You will be notified when your suggestion is brought before the BOD, and what actions will be taken regarding it.
By sharing your concerns with us you can help continue to make Del Tura our piece of paradise!
Your HOA Board of Directors
The Del Tura Grounds Committee consists of volunteers that provide regular general surveillance of common areas in Del Tura. If you are interested in making a difference by overseeing an area of your interest, to identify repairs needed, as well as repairs completed, please contact delturagrounds@yahoo.com.
Please remember that in order to keep our grounds in a condition that we are proud of, it is respectful to clean your tables, put your trash in the receptacles provided, and if you move tables together put them back the way they were. This is for the pool areas, as well as the courtyard. Also, when you leave a table, please close the umbrella so it doesn’t get damaged if a storm kicks up.
By Darlene FinchamFinally, remember that only Hometown America (Del Tura) personnel is authorized to move umbrellas or furniture from its original location.
If you spot something in a common area that needs repair please send an email, including pictures and exact location (very important), to delturagrounds@yahoo.com and a work order will be requested through the Hometown America’s Administration Office. For larger items, which are capital expenditures, our HOA leadership continues to work with Hometown America on a monthly basis. Residential property issues are outside the Grounds Committee and HOA jurisdiction, so please work directly with Del Tura’s administrative team.
Attention Del Tura: The Tower has a new email address! Effective immediately all articles, flyers and photos should be submitted to dttoweredit@gmail.com.
We understand it may take a few months to make the transition to this new address so will continue to maintain and monitor the old address for several months.
Thanks for your help and continued support. I look forward to working with all of you to keep the Tower the important community resource it has always been. ~ Cindy Swisher

This summer, most would agree, was a hot one. Despite the high temps there were various opportunities to play golf, including invitations from off-site clubs as well as the Thursday scramble “playdates” and luncheons with the 18-Hole ladies. These offered a change of pace and an opportunity to reconnect.
Looking ahead to the 2022-23 league season, Justine Fitzgibbons, President, and Debby Taylor, Tournament Chairman, have events planned for what should be another fun year of golf with friendly competition and social opportunities. The Social Committee, too, is busy planning a variety of menu possibilities.
The first event is the COUPLES’ CHALLENGE, on NOVEMBER 2, with dinner to follow in the Ballroom. Participants will gather in the lower parking lot by 1:30PM with tee-off at 2:00 PM. This fun event is a great mixer as members come back together and provides an opportunity to get to know our new members. Additional information, including cost, will be provided and posted in the Dungeon on the Nine-Hole Ladies’ bulletin board. Please Note: there are often separate sign-up sheets for golf and/ or meal reservations.
Members are encouraged to check their bulletin board regularly for upcoming events, updates, news and fun photos (courtesy of Marianne Denman). Checks for our events (payable to DTNHWGADel Tura Nine Hole Women’s Golf Association) should be dropped off at the Pro Shop.
Whether you are new to the sport of golf or have been away for a time, our league offers an opportunity to play nine holes on Thursday mornings while getting some exercise in a beautiful setting with both friends and possibly new friends. Our Membership Chairman, Kathy Klein, can be reached at 715927-1163 and will gladly answer any questions you may have.
See you on the tee!
By Sandy GoveThe Del Tura Women’s Golf Association (DTWGA) is open to new members. You do not have to be a member of the golf course to join our association; and you do not need to have any specific handicap. There are two types of memberships and new members can join at any time of the year:
Full memberships are available to all women who hold a golf membership in the Del Tura Golf and Country Club. They…….
● Must pay annual dues of $35.00.
● Are eligible to play in all Thursday games, including major tournaments.
● Are eligible to vote on rule or by-law changes.
Associate memberships are available to all women living in Del Tura who do not have a Del Tura golf membership. They…….
● Must pay annual dues of $35.00.
● Are eligible to play in all Thursday games, except major tournaments.
● Are not eligible to vote on rule or by-law changes.
We golf every Thursday (weather permitting), so if you like to golf 18 holes, we’d love for you to join us. For more information, just call or text one of the following ladies:
Margie Blackwell, President, at (239) 728-7548. Mary Ciezadlo, Vice President, at (517) 256-0666.
Cilla Canney, Membership Chair, at (978) 314-3773.
Stay hydrated and hope to see you on the course!
Come join us on Tuesdays, after coffee until about 3:00, in the Starlight Ballroom. We quilt, knit, crochet, spin wool, and do other various crafts. We all work on our own projects, but occasionally have a class to learn a technique.
Bring your own equipment and supplies. If you bring a sewing machine, bring an extension cord as the outlets are few and far between. For more information, call Wendy Wells at 309-264-9147. I hope to see you there!

This year’s annual Movember Foundation fundraising event promises to be extraordinary! A live music and video spectacular produced especially for Del Tura, entitled “Rock Roll and Remember” will be presented Saturday, November 12th from 7-9:30 pm in the Starlight Ballroom.
The following Friday, November 18th from noon until 4 pm, a special Gift and Basket Auction will be held in the Poinciana and Jacaranda Rooms. Saturday, November 19th the annual Junk in the Trunk sale will take place from 8 -11 am. At dusk that day, we will once again feature the Floating Candle Luminaries in honor/memory of friends and family. Funds raised will go to the Movember Foundation to support men’s health and awareness, and to fight cancer in the U.S. and around the world.
“Rock Roll and Remember” is an exciting live musical and visual journey featuring the music of the 50’s and 60’s.
“With literally hundreds of pictures and videos on a large screen installed just for this event, the music of ‘Swing Street’, and a special surprise you won’t want to miss, it promises to be a fun-filled incredible journey through two of the greatest music decades in history,” said Bart DeGraf, event chairman. “If you attended the dance here in Del Tura this past July, you know our own Jim Stenzel and Dave Adams are members of ‘Swing Street’ and the band was a smash hit. This HOA sponsored show has been in the planning stages for nearly a year and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever done here,” he added.
Show tickets for HOA members only will go on sale October 25th. Sales for all residents begin the next day. Tickets will be sold in the clubhouse Tuesdays 7:30-8:45 am and Thursdays 4:30-6:30 pm. Tickets and contributions are tax deductible.
Don’t miss out on this special exclusive show. VIP seats are $50 per person, and include seating in the first two rows of tables in the ballroom, pre-show hors-d’oeuvres, and a postshow reception and dessert bar. These seats are extremely limited. Individual tickets for center rows three through six are $35 each. Tickets in the wings are just $25 each.
Mark your calendars and make plans for an event like no other as we “Rock Roll and Remember”!
Contact Bart De Graaf at 847-638-1355 for show information or to volunteer.
For ticket information, call Nancy Adams at 508-284-0919.
“ROCK, TO HEADLINE 12TH ANNUAL MOVEMBER FUNDRAISING EVENTS
Come to Listen! Come to Dance! Come for the Memories! But most of all…. Come for the Fun!!
I want to thank Sandy Gove for the list of dog friendly plants. For those of you that are new to Florida and want to do some landscaping, it’s important to know what won’t hurt our pets.
Ivy and Riley from last month’s article belong to the Giannantonio’s. I think I left that off the article that Gemma wrote about her dogs.
These plants are generally considered safe to plant around Felis and Fido. Keep in mind this list is not exhaustive and only includes some of the most common flowers typically grown in the South. If you are even uncertain or suspect your pet has ingested harmful plants, you should contact your veterinarian.
By Justine FitzgibbonsAs the snowbirds and snowdogs come back to Del Tura please remember to not block the gate and angle park along the fence.
The awnings will be down until Hurricane season is over.
Any dog registered with the office, up to date on all their shots and who is not aggressive is welcome at the park.

Take Time to Remember…
Take time to remember to do the “little things” in life. It’s these timely moments that will help you focus and somehow keep you grounded when life seems to be throwing too many obstacles your way. Time…how often do we convince ourselves that we have plenty. Time to do that later, tomorrow, next week. Before you know it next week becomes next year and we never get to do that one little thing that could make a huge difference down the road. Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve…these words seem to take up too much space in our thoughts, more space than they have a right to! So, let’s replace them with the mantra of I Can, I Shall, and I Will, and see how it changes how we spend more time on the little things that can benefit us and others in our lives.
How many times have you walked by that candle a loved one gave you for a special occasion thinking maybe I should light it? Think about how it would make you feel to light it. Sit down and reflect on the moment that it was given. Chances are that it was given by a person that is near and dear to you, possibly a grandchild, a sibling, or a dear friend. Remember the smiles and the joy that it brought to both of you? Recapture that moment by lighting that candle because it will bring you back to that special time and warm your heart. “I Can, I Shall, and I Will…”
The special moments that we can reflect on now and later in our lives are not always material, but more importantly connected to the heart. Writing a short note, sending a card, making that phone call that you have been putting off for a while will make a huge difference to someone, and to you. Feel good feelings both ways! Let’s face it, we all put things off, and before you know it weeks go by and we still haven’t written that note, mailed that card, or made that phone call. We are all human…Just try to stay as connected as you can with the ones you love. Remember, our elders connect us to our past and our young ones keep us connected to the present.
Staying connected to our elders…sounds funny when I say this line out loud. Most of us are the elders in our families now and realize that we have so many unanswered questions from the past. I realize now that I “should’ve” asked more questions way back then. Thankfully, I have beautiful memories to help me with the missing pieces. I only pray that our young ones take time to sit a while with their elders and listen to their stories. “Could’ve, Should’ve, Would’ve…”
I recently had the opportunity to visit with my 94 year old aunt. Talk about gifts!
She is a treasure and has always meant the world to me! She lives alone and thrives on daily conversations and visits from her children. I learned many new things about our ancestral past and left with a priceless gift that will be a part of me forever. We talked for hours, shared pictures, laughed until we cried. It was an amazing day!! “I Can, I Shall, and I Will…”
Everything in our past has a special connection to our lives. Material items give us pleasure: beautiful to look at but it’s not just the object. It’s the memory, or story that is connected to it. Staying in touch with our loved ones and dear friends, and sharing the importance of our younger life experiences is a treasure filled with memories that no one can take from us. So don’t hesitate to light that candle, write that note, make that phone call, or visit someone special. Do it because it will forever warm your heart. And on those days when life seems to be a bit overwhelming you can take the time to reflect on all those little things that made you feel good. “I Can, I Shall, and I Will…”

This year’s annual Del Tura Holiday Craft Fair is going to be the best one yet. We currently have 66 local vendors, with close to a third of them being fellow Del Turians. They will be bringing with them unique hand-made craft items such as ceramics, glass, jewelry, wood, pottery, wearable and decorative sewn, crocheted and knitted items, holiday decorations, sports items and much, much more. With so many creative gift options, the Del Tura Craft Fair is a perfect opportunity to knock out some of that special occasion and holiday shopping, while supporting local small business crafters. Come, bring a friend, enjoy getting together with neighbors, stroll through the vendors’ creations to find those special gifts (located throughout all
of the ballrooms), and take some chances on the beautiful hand-made items at the Raffle Table.
The reason Del Tura Craft Fair is considered to be the best around is because of its wonderful volunteers. I can’t say enough great things about Del Tura’s volunteers and would love for you to join this fantastic team. We are working on building this year’s volunteer team and we need people like you for the following positions: Vendor Helpers, Vendor Aides, Raffle Table Helpers, Greeters, Parking Attendants, Golf Cart Shuttle Drivers, kitchen help and Outside Flyer Distributors. That said, if you are interested in volunteering, or just have questions about volunteering, please send an email to delturacraftfair@yahoo. com or come to Tuesday Coffee and we will have a volunteer sign-up sheet there. Also, if you are a crafter, and would like to donate a new handmade item toward this fundraiser, please send an email to delturacraftfair@yahoo.com.

Over the years FISH has held many different fundraisers. There have been many cookie sales, there was a NO-Bake cookie sale, there was a visit to ten Del Tura homes and there was a luncheon with bidding on purses; however, there has never been what we are doing this year. Please come to our Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning, October 1st at 8 am. Tickets are $7.00. You will be served pancakes (of course!), bacon or sausage, juice and coffee or tea. When you are finished with your yummy breakfast, just walk away. FISH volunteers will happily clean up your place.
FISH stands for “Friends in Service Here”. We service our community by providing rides to the doctor, dentist, and grocery store for those who do not drive. Our drivers are all volunteers who supply the wear and tear on their own cars, their gas, and their personal time. We try to send cards to cheer up people who are lonely or ill or sad. We even try to call on one’s birthday to wish them well.
We have a trailer full of medical equipment (see picture), which we lend to our residents. In the FISH trailer we have wheelchairs, walkers, canes, potty chairs, shower chairs and even an ice machine to assist in pain reduction. If you need an item, please call 239-997-3474 and follow the instructions on the phone. When a piece of equipment is needed to aid someone in recovery from a hospital stay, an operation or an illness, we will deliver the item to their home and pick it up when its need is done. All this is FREE to all of our residents, full-time or part-time.
We have a great team of fruit pickers. If you have a tree that needs picking, whether it be a grapefruit, lemon, orange, mango, starfruit, banana or avocado the team would be glad to pick. They will give you what fruit you want for yourself, and the rest will be donated to a local soup kitchen. This way no fruit goes to waste. Our pickers will also pick up fruit off the ground, which will help keep unwanted critters away from our homes.

My name is Jeffrey Meehan and have been given the honor of taking over the responsibility of ordering and installing the bricks for the Bricks4Vets program. This is nice way of commemorating a family member, friend, or yourself for serving in any of the Armed Services of the United States. The remembrance is a 4x8 inch reddish colored brick engraved with the name, rank, date of service and/or place the person served. The brick is installed at the 9-11 Memorial. The last order of 12 bricks were received and installed on Thursday August 25, 2022. I want to thank Steve Fincham for taking his time to install the bricks and Meg and Joe Valentino for their past work in this program.
A General Overview for ordering from Bricks4vets:
1) Fill out an order form which I will provide upon request by email, at Tuesday coffee meeting, or you can stop by my house.
2) Cost is $40 per brick.
3) Make check out to: Del Tura HOA-Bricks4Vets.
4) Drop off the order form with the check to my address: Jeffrey Meehan

Email: bricks4veterans@gmail.com
To receive free shipping from Polar Engraving of Naples, five or more bricks are needed for each order. Once I receive enough orders and pay the invoice, production time is from three to six weeks. Once the bricks are shipped to my address, I will arrange to have them installed and announce the completion at the next Tuesday coffee meeting in the Starlight Ballroom.
Thank you, Jeffrey Meehan
Calling all Bakers…
Save Our Strays will be having a bake sale on November 19th during the Trunk Sale at the Clubhouse. We need your help! If you would like to contribute a baked good, we will need the “goodies” delivered on November 18th to the Jacaranda Room between 6:30-6:30. Pleas call Sherry, 239-567-0538, or Karen, 239-220-0563, and let us know if you can help. Thank you.
During our hot Florida weather, we humans know that we need to stay hydrated. But it is a rare cat that races to his water bowl! We humans can help our kitties by sneaking in some extra water to their daily consumption. We like to have our plates and water next to each other; however, cats prefer to drink in a separate location from where they eat. Also, never put their water bowl next to the litterbox… pee you!
Some cats love drinking from a bubbling fountain or a dripping faucet – just remember to turn off the water.
Another way to get more water in your cat is by boiling an unseasoned piece of chicken and using the cooled water as an extra treat, just make sure not to flavor the chicken with onion or garlic. You can use the shredded chicken as a special treat for them also. You can add more watering stations in your home. Most cats prefer fresh, clean water, so remember to clean and refresh the bowls daily. Another option is to add some wet food to your cat’s diet. I know they usually love their crunchies, but adding wet food is also adding liquid to their diet.
Stay hydrated and kitty too! Meow!
You may have heard that you can simplify your investment strategy just by owning index-based or passive investments. But is this a good idea? You’ll want to consider the different aspects of this type of investment style.
To begin with, an index-based investment is a vehicle such as a mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that mimics the performance of a market benchmark, or index — the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and so on. (An ETF is similar to a mutual fund in that it holds a variety of investments but differs in that it is traded like a common stock.) You can also invest in index funds that track the bond market. Index investing does offer some benefits. Most notably, it’s a buy-and-hold strategy, which is typically more effective than a market-timing approach, in which individuals try to buy investments when their prices are down and sell them when the prices rise. Attempts to time the market this way are usually futile because nobody can really predict when high and low points will be reached. Plus, the very act of constantly buying and selling investments can generate commissions and fees, which can lower your overall rate of return. Thus, index investing generally involves lower fees and is considered more tax efficient than a more active investing style. Also, when the financial markets are soaring, which happened for several years until this year’s downturn, index-based investments can certainly look pretty good — after all, when the major indexes go up, index funds will do the same.
Conversely, during a correction, when the market drops at least 10% from recent highs, or during a bear market, when prices fall 20% or more, index-based investments will likely follow the same downward path. And there are also other issues to consider with index-based investments.
For one thing, if you’re investing with the objective of matching an index, you may be overlooking the key factors that should be driving your investment decisions — your goals and your risk tolerance. An index is a completely impersonal benchmark measuring the performance of a specific set of investments — but it can’t be a measuring stick of your own progress.
Furthermore, a single index, by definition, can’t be as diversified as the type of portfolio you might need to achieve your objectives. For example, the S&P 500 may track a lot of companies, but they’re predominantly large ones. And to achieve your objectives, you may need a portfolio consisting of large- and small-company stocks, bonds, government securities and other investments. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can give you more opportunities for success and can reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee profits or prevent all losses.)
Ultimately, diversifying across different types of investments that align with your risk tolerance and goals — regardless of whether they track an index — is the most important consideration for your investment portfolio.
Use this idea as your guiding principle as you journey through the investment world.
Here’s a recap of the plans that were made this last season. A sensory garden will be added to the Demo Garden. Wooden planters will be attached to the cement circle walls. Herbs that have aroma and herbs that can be sampled, like cinnamon basel, lemon balm, and rosemary will be planted in the planters.
An area at the entrance to the Demo Garden will
By Rosemary Eidenwill be open for viewing. Tentatively we are looking at March 20th, 2023. Tickets will be $5/ each. There will be maps to locate the individual gardens. This will be a good opportunity to get landscape ideas. The annual plant sale will coincide with the “garden stroll”.

Let’s play Tennis this Fall.
Open Tennis is for everyone on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. The best part is that you don’t need to bring a partner. You just show up during these times and you will automatically be included in the group.
The Del Tura Tennis Association sign-up sheet for intramural leagues has been posted in the screened room and will be removed on October 16. You can also register by email at DelTuraTennis@gmail.com. There is only one area for sign-up and one for substituting. After the October 16 deadline, you will be assigned a group according to your rating. If you don’t have a rating and want to play, please contact the Del Tura Tennis Association by email or phone at 954-478-4033. Your request will be forwarded to one of the three rating committee members. The intra-mural league will be starting in late October depending on registration. All league players will be advised of groups, dates, and times as soon as the leagues are formed.
Our travelling teams are ready to meet teams from the Lee County Women’s Tennis League. The SWIFT team is on hold at this time, waiting for the league to confirm starting dates. We are all looking forward to an active season. Come and watch our teams play others such as Heron’s Glen, Sabal Springs and teams that come as far as Gulf Harbour, Lexington, South Fort-Myers and Bonita Springs.
Reserve November 8 on your calendar to start your free lessons. They consist of six sessions of approximately one hour each. Please contact Jacqueline St-Jean for more information at the email below.
You will find our Calendar of Events posted in the screened room. Come and join us for our leagues, free lessons, and tournaments.
If you have any questions, please contact Jacqueline St-Jean at jacstjean2016@gmail. com or the Del Tura Tennis Association at DelTuraTennis@gmail.com.

Way back when, the 3 R’s referred to reading, writing and ‘rithmetic. Today, the mantra is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. This is important because global warming demands that we change the ways we have been treating the environment. Wildfires, droughts, natural disasters, urban development, polluted oceans, melting glaciers and more, have all taken a toll on our planet.
Worldwide, leaders have a responsibility to initiate policy changes with regard to decreasing emissions and greenhouse gases, cleaning up waterways, and protecting forests and wildlife, to name a few. In the meantime, there is much that we, as individuals, can do to prevent ongoing environmental abuse. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are three strategies that anyone can adopt.
By reducing the amount of paper we use, we are helping to protect our forests. Opting for paperless billing, banking and so on, is not only convenient, but it saves money and reduces the amount of paper that needs to be recycled. Another idea is using fewer paper plates and using cloth napkins instead of paper. Evaluate ways to reduce the amount of paper towels used. Would a kitchen sponge do the job just as well?
Plastic is particularly toxic to our health and to the environment, especially the oceans and their inhabitants. For instance, sea turtles, who feed on jelly fish, see floating plastic bags as food and ingest them, often with tragic results. Remembering to take reusable market bags with
By Anne Walshyou when shopping is one way to help protect marine life. Plastic bottles also unfortunately often end up in waterways. Instead of single use water bottles, invest in reusable water bottles that will also save some money at the same time.
Newsflash: Florida tap water is perfectly safe to drink!
Reusing is a way of reducing waste and often can be another money saver. Shopping in and donating to thrift stores is something to consider. There are also internet sites where you can sell used clothing or household goods. Upcycling is a creative way to reuse an object by finding another purpose for it. Glass bottles can become vases or can be used for storing food leftovers instead of plastic containers. Household items can be converted to planters or other garden décor, with a little imagination.
Recycling is one of the easiest things we can do to prevent waste from ending up in landfills and oceans. Plastic, glass, cans and paper all go into one recycle bin. Rinse out cans and bottles before discarding because heavily soiled items will not be recycled. Large cardboard boxes should be collapsed and folded. Don’t forget about yard waste. Horticultural recycling has a vital impact on restoring essential nutrients to the soil.
Don’t underestimate the power of individual action:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” ~ Margaret Mead.

Time for me to get a letter out to everyone again. I am writing this from up in cold Wisconsin because it won’t be long until the 30th and we’ll be back on our way south again to our home in beautiful Del-Tura. Saying that, we will be getting things ready again to run our Thursday night HOA sponsored bingo. Our plans are to start Thursday, October 13th so mark your calendars. We will be looking forward to seeing you all again. We also want to hold a meeting with all those who will be callers again at 4:00 on Oct. 6th in the main Ballroom. If you need to call us our number is 731-0892. We will be in Del Tura on Oct. 2nd. We would also appreciate some help on the 13th to get everything set up as Janet and I are really handicapped; I am still recovering from back surgery and Janet is having bad hip issues and will be scheduling surgery as soon as possible. We will be running bingo as in the past with no changes and are looking for great turnouts which make it more fun to play. Hope to see you all up there soon.
Well, it’s that time again…I can’t believe summer is over and it’s almost time to head back to Florida. Safe travels to all that are heading “home” for the season.
This month we are going to continue with playing the “game” starting with the first serve, which we talked about in the last edition. So, the ball has been served to the opposite side of the net (deuce side to deuce side). The ball must bounce, landing in the correct square, before it is returned. Once the ball is returned to the serving side, that side (serving side) MUST let the ball bounce before they can hit the ball back. When the receiving team (the side getting the serve) hits it back to the serving team, they should try to return it “deep” but still land in bounds. This deep return allows the receiving team to advance to the “kitchen line”, which is really where you want to end up. Being at the “kitchen line” allows you to have the advantage of returning the ball quickly back to the opposing team. The ball is hit back and forth until one team makes an error, hitting the ball out of bounds. Once an error is made and the ball is dead, the ball goes to the other side to serve. From this point on, each team will have two servers before the ball is returned to the other side to serve. The start of the game is the only time there is only one server.
Well, that’s enough for this edition. Watch PB on YouTube and see if you can follow this at all.

Season Four of the Creative Writers Workshop is almost here, with many new challenges! I’d like to direct the attention of our current group, as well as any aspiring writers to our startup dates of Monday, October 17th at 11 am and Wednesday, October 19th at 4 pm (for those who cannot make the Monday date) for our first meeting. At least initially, I will be offering two choices of day and time to try to fit more people’s schedules. We’ll try to meet twice a month, and you’ll be informed of the dates of successive meetings as we go forward. We’ll plan to continue meeting at the banyan tree, as it works well for golf cart gathering. If you like to write or would like to try it, please contact me. It’s good to remember that channeling our creative talents to writing can be inspiring, healing, and entertaining. Each writer’s response to the challenge handed out is read aloud and shared with the group at each meeting, an exercise that has proven to be very enjoyable. If you would like to join us as a new member, please text me (607-769-5766) OR email me to let me know you are interested. My email address is ndavy01@gmail.com. You’ll need to provide me with your name, your email address, and your cell phone number. I routinely text everyone with reminders before each meeting, and ask for confirmation of how many will
attend so I have enough material. I look forward to another season!
I’m attaching a challenge from the end of Season Three. The assignment is to go to a public place and listen to conversations around you. Jot down expressions or exchanges that are interesting or strike you for some reason. Then write something, selecting a quote from a stranger to begin and end your challenge. Be creative in inventing “the middle” so that it will illustrate a reason that the statement was made. This is my example. I hope you enjoy it!
Tech Gone Wrong by Nancy Davy “Oy, vey! Oy, vey!” I heard her say. She waved her arms and walked away. Fed up with what she termed “a mess”, that described our generation’s dress.
Long hair, tie-dyed shirts, sunglasses, and torn blue-jeaned long legs and asses. “Young people, what is wrong with you? and what is our world coming to?”
By Karen Handley and Cindy SwisherIt was the winter of 2004. My husband and I were sitting in front of the television on a cold and snowy Michigan night trying to stay warm. After flipping through the channels for several minutes, we landed on a Travel Channel show entitled, “Millionaire Trailer Parks.” It looked somewhat interesting, if not a bit amusing, so we decided to give it a look.
The first half of the program featured a park of not-so gorgeous trailers that were nestled high atop a ridge overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean near Malibu, California. This gave the saying, “location, location, location” an entirely new meaning. I don’t think I’d have towed one of those “homes” behind my car, but man oh man, what a view!
As I was heading back into the room with a warm beverage, the commercial break came to an end and what flashed on the screen but the blue and gold tile fountain of Del Tura! I stopped dead in my tracks and said excitedly to my husband, who was as surprised as I, “Hey, isn’t that the place your sister just moved to?” We were glued to the screen for the next several minutes, thinking how cool Del Tura was and we called Jackie and Harry as soon as the show ended.
At that time moving to Florida was a long way off and we promptly forgot about the program, although we visited here several times after that.
Fast forward 15 years. I had taken over editorship of the Tower shortly after moving to Del Tura and my co-editor, Karen Handley, had the excellent idea of including articles in the paper highlighting Del Tura history and the people
who live here. In her search for good stories, she was given a packet of information by resident Jim Hinrichs, who was gracious enough to part with this treasure. As I was sifting thorough it, I came across an article from the New Press dated October 2002 - 20 years ago – about that very Travel Channel show from so long ago.
The episode, “Millionaire Trailer Parks” was part of a series, “Travel Channel Secrets” that aired on the channel in the early 2000s. Producer and writer, Loredana Palivoda and her crew, were here in October of 2002 filming the episode that made its debut in the spring of 2003. “We’re blasting the myth of what it’s like to live in a manufactured home community – faux wood paneling, green shag carpeting and Bubba on the couch with a Budweiser,” she said. “It’s not like that. We’re featuring the upscale lifestyle.”
At the time Del Tura was 20 years old, had 1200 homes and room for 150 more.
Among the residents who were interviewed and appeared in the show were: Milton B. Clark, Marvin Johnson, Elaine Johnson, John and June Bilancio and General Manager, Tom Wyant.
It was fun to come across this blast from the past and be able to share it with you; however, after living in Del Tura for the past three years, I would have to take exception to the name of the show, “Millionaire Trailer Parks.” I am more inclined to agree with June Bilancio, “It’s not a trailer park, it’s a community.” Indeed, it is. A community with a pretty cool history!
By Nancy DavyI recall that Grandma’s point of view did mellow as her grandkids grew; took responsibilities upon their shoulders we all blended in as we grew older.
She’s gone now, but her words remain in my memory as a soft refrain as I look at this generation Who has an endless fascination
For cellphones, gaming, Facebook feeds that block human interactive needs family time together, conversation, replaced now by our separation.
It seems to get worse every day It doesn’t have to be this way!!
Frustrated now, all I can say Is “Put down the phone, ok? Oy vey!!”
Note: I tried to find a link to the original broadcast but had no luck. It looks as though Travel Channel deleted it from its archives. If anyone can locate it, please let me know. I’d love to watch it again.
