“Idon’t think you’ll find too many Sept. 17 events in Dublin,” said Eileen Carrigan with a laugh. Still, the owner of Shebeen Irish Pub on Midnight Pass Road will once again be celebrating “Halfway to St. Paddy’s Day” this month, in honor of the very American passion for all things Irish-ish. The event, which runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, will feature live Irish music, Celtic dancers and bagpipes. Revelers can enjoy $6 Guinness pints and specials on Shebeen’s menu of traditional Irish American fare like fish and chips, hot

arlor Doughnuts is a room where you have conversation,” said Jordan Khan. “I love that idea. That’s what we need now as people. A place you can just sit down and talk. Like when you remember sitting on your grandmother’s porch talking with your cousins.”
True to that family tone, Khan is part of a seven-person team
of franchisees, mostly relatives, that are slowly bringing Parlor Doughnuts locations to southwest Florida. Their latest shop opened at the Siesta Center in the Village last May.
“When it came to coming into business together, it felt like a nobrainer,” said Khan. “Something for us to do as a family.”
Parlor Doughnuts, “a craft doughnut and coffee shop,” first
pretzels and beer cheese, and corned beef and cabbage.
Carrigan is quick to thank her clientele for the restaurant’s continued success since she took over operations in 2022 from the founders, who were true Irish natives.
She’s especially grateful to the year-round Sarasotans who keep showing up in August and September. Though Siesta Key is known as a tourist hotspot, Shebeen, like many Sarasota businesses, counts on local patrons, especially in the summertime.
“There are only so many of them, so we rely on repeat business,” she said. “We’ve been successful because
people keep coming through the door. It’s a blessing.”
At the same time, Carrigan does her best to support local music acts during the slower summer months—primarily Celtic and folk musicians, of course.
“We do occasionally bring someone in who’s maybe more American country or classic rock,” she added. “Of course, there’s a lot of Celtic roots in American country.”
Even with a loyal local following, summertime can feel like “the zombie apocalypse” for Siesta businesses, Carrigan said. And that’s why the Sept. 17 party times out perfectly as
launched in 2019 in Indiana. The concept centers on the centuriesold tradition of home parlors, or well-furnished rooms where families gathered to talk. Rather than the commonplace yeast or cake donuts, Parlor serves layered pastry confections (like the “Cronut” but without the trademark). The menu also includes a range of coffee drinks.

Not Bubble Gum Music
Fifty years ago, our family went every summer to Hilton Head Island in Georgia. Breakfasts in the late mornings, afternoons swimming in the Atlantic ocean’s shark-free surf (gated communities like Sea Pines didn’t allow unpleasant distractions back then) and, of course, evenings with the kids listening to Bubble Gum Music with Gregg Russell in Harbour Town. (Spoiler Alert: Gregg is still, after fifty years, singing his heart away and capturing the hearts of the raptly listening kids).
How do memories like this bubble up to the surface? They did recently after googling “Sarasota the Bay Events”. What came up for various Sundays during September was Fleming & Co., Shelby Sol, Los Rumberos, and Matt Walden. These solo and group singers and musicians don’t play any BG music but instead serenade with their own music, along with indie pop, flamenco, folk, funk, soul, and songs influenced by Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu and Moonchild.
Thursdays are movie nights and, this month, The Bay will be showing The Blind Side, Sideways, West Side Story, and Good Natured It’s a lovely way to spend a summer evening. Of course, if you are into being fit (or getting fit), there are many classes of which to partake. And if you have a little one along with you, amble closer to Sarasota Bay and watch them climb into, and slide out of, the giant ibis. Great fun. More info at thebaysarasota. org/calendar/
Something at which to marvel
Action fans love Marvel movies, and those flickering wonderful flicks are based on the original Marvel Comics. On September 2, in the Geldbart Auditorium of
downtown Selby Library, Jerry DeCaire, a Marvel artist (Wolverine, Thor, X-Men and more) will be doing a live drawing demonstration and will detail how Marvel comic books are made.
If you think action movies are okay, but you’re more into anime, tweens and teens can visit Selby’s Anime Club to watch and discuss their favorite characters with other fans.
A fun thing for those from 9 to 90 is to make a treasure box. A three-part series will be starting on Sept. 4 where you can learn to make paper-clay decorations for the top and sides, how to paint the result, and how to add feet to finish off the box. The box makes a wonderful handmade gift.
Find shipwrecks interesting? Then the Time Sifters Archaeology Society’s presentation on Sept. 17 of Two Shipwrecks off of Dominica, the 18th and 20th Century should be right up your alley.
The Calusa were an indigenous group living from Tampa down to the tip of Florida and having influence over other tribes from Arcadia to the east coast. A Jacob Winge lecture on the Calusa will be held at the Geldbart Auditorium on the afternoon of September 27th.
Also, in the Geldbart, the film Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos, will be shown in the early evening on the 30th. Also, throughout the month, there will be demonstrations and discussions on music, computer coding, sewing, Sister Cities, picture frame
decoration, knitting, paper crafts, philosophy, near-death experiences and many other strange and interesting topics for all ages. Some require registration. Info for all ten Sarasota County libraries at scgovlibrary.librarymarket. com/events/month.
What is a tapestry?
The dictionary definition is a heavy cloth that has designs or pictures woven into it and that is used for wall hangings. What if the cloth isn’t heavy, or if it isn’t cloth but is the actual designs and pictures that are (sort of) woven/strung/pieced together, or if is not hung on a wall but hung as a wall? So many questions and only one answer–sure, why not!
The Sarasota Art Museum, ex-Sarasota High School on S. Tamiami Trail, currently has a few exhibits that are hanging or glued on walls or are walls themselves.
In a third-floor gallery there is a series of–what?
Bits and pieces of colored cloth, rings, photos, textures, shells, glass and other materials that create see-through tapestries. Some are attached to the walls, hang on or in front of walls, or are walls. One hanging tapestry creates a monotone beige shadow on the wall behind its colorful self. Did the one create the other, simply by being? Parthenogenesis by an inanimate object? Or, perhaps, Art does have a life of its own. The exhibit runs through Oct. 26.
In all, these thousands of pieces have been put together by the artist Lillian Blades in an exhibit titled Through the Veil. An apt title as the one wearing a veil (being closest to it) can see clearly but as you stand further away, the veil becomes more of a mask. And the small intricate meaningful pieces that make up these veils become riotous arcs and splashes of color.

I recently hosted a group of friends and clients on one of my annual destination fly fishing trips. Richard Weintraub, Jim Kuhlman and I traveled from Sarasota to Bozeman, Montana and met up with Tim Siegel, from Indiana, Ray Hutchinson, from Michigan and Trevor Elmquist, from Pine Island, FL. We made the 2-1/2-hour drive to Medicine Lodge, located on a 100,000-acre working ranch near the Beaverhead River, outside of Dillon, MT. We met up with group members Mike Perez, from Sarasota and Dennis Kinley, from Indiana. We fished the Beaverhead, Big Hole and Madison Rivers and a couple of spring creeks with guide Dave King, owner of King Outfitters (Contact info: 406-596-0209) in Dillon, MT and his talented group of guides and caught some quality fish. I’ve fished with Dave for more than 25 years and his guides do a great job and know their fishery well.
Water levels were higher than expected and, despite some restrictions, fishing was generally good. Schedules were adjusted for earlier starts and we were done fishing before the heat of the day. We had morning temperatures in the high 40s to low 50s some days,
which was refreshing compared to Florida in late July.
We fished 4, 5 and 6-weight fly tackle and caught and released brown and rainbow trout to more than 20” on streamers, dry flies and dry/ dropper rigs. The dry fly action was often a hopper, sometimes with a nymph or with a smaller dry fly dropper and a few other bugs. Wildlife was plentiful. We crossed paths with deer, moose, bighorn sheep and antelope during the week. This is an annual trip for me, so if you have an interest in technical fly fishing for big trout or if you want to learn the ropes and travel with an experienced group, please let me know.
Back in Sarasota, catch and release snook fishing around dock lights and bridges should be a good option. You might also find juvenile tarpon in a few places mixed with snook around dock lights. Juvenile tarpon in canals and creeks may also be a good option. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by residential, industrial and agricultural runoff, toxic spills and intentional releases, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation. Please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

a Siesta Key holiday, if not an Irish one. “Halfway” marks a point when Key businesses can start to look forward to the busier fall and winter seasons.
“It’s a godsend for us,” said Carrigan. “Several businesses on the Key, on any of the keys, will shut down at some point in August and September, and we do too. This is right after we reopen, and it’s a big rejuvenation for us.”
Though “Halfway” isn’t a traditional holiday on the Emerald Isle, Carrigan has otherwise strived to make Shebeen as authentic as you can get on Siesta Key.
“An Irish pub is different than a standard bar,” she said. “People come in because they are looking for and expect a certain experience. That’s partly why we’re successful, and this is true of any good Irish pub: When you walk in, you should never feel like a stranger.”
There are now more than 50 Parlor franchises throughout the country. Khan’s group, which includes his father (an experienced restaurateur) and two cousins, runs three locations from Clearwater to Venice, with a fourth planned for Largo. The first opened in July of 2023. The group had just started making payments on their Siesta property, which was formerly occupied by Project Coffee, when

“That was a big challenge,” said Khan, who is originally from southern Indiana. “We’re new to Florida. We’re still learning how to deal with natural disasters.”
The Siesta shop is especially cozy, with five employees and only about a quarter of the square footage of the Clearwater location. Khan and his partners have furnished it with nostalgic donut-shop décor, black-andwhite patterned linoleum,
Key. “My favorite is also the most popular: French toast,” said Khan. “The maple glaze on that is phenomenal.”
Autumn will bring seasonal flavors, including a donut with apple pie filling and Parlor’s take on the season’s ubiquitous coffee drinks. “All the fall spices,” said Khan. He’s also on the lookout for local partnerships and events that could host pop-up donut shops.

In a second-floor gallery, 17 artists, all represented by the same print maker, have produced sculptures, etchings, and quilts which are on display. Many of the originals are side by side with prints by the same artist.
Quilts can be made to fit snugly into a child’s crib while others might lay over the parents’ marriage bed. But when you hang them on a wall, tapestries appear. Not the size that a king would want on the cold walls of a chateau in France, but, if made by Louisiana Bendolph or Loretta Bennett, just as pleasing to the eye.
Molly Hatch’s Amalgam, visible from both inside and outside the museum through April 26 of next year, is not made up of bits and pieces, but of hundreds of discs (plates) of varying sizes that are designed to look like whole bits and pieces. Some look like bits of delftware while others are deftly
made amalgamations of gold and blue sinews. More info at sarasotaartmuseum.
In September, travelers can see the maple leaves in Canada change from dark green to crimson red - if forest fires haven’t already done that to them by now. Better to stay in Sarasota in air-conditioned bliss. Where in Sarasota? Well, for starters, the Urbanite Theatre is having a Modern Works Festival with four different plays between Sept. 11-21.
All the news reports tell us that imports from China are getting more expensive. From Sept. 11-14, the Urbanite presents Phoebe Potts’ Two Fat For China, her story of what it took to adopt a child in China and bring them back home, without paying too high a tariff. True, a few years ago there weren’t tariffs on babies, but there were plenty of other obstacles. 1999 was so last century
(and this century also). Stacey Isom Campbell’s play. with that number/name, tells a #MeToo story of three women of the 1990s film industry and how a college course featuring a disgraced director brings past traumas back to life.
Ahoy-Hoy is a play about another year,1876, when Elisha Gray is about to invent the telephone (Who knew?) Check Google–he’s the real deal. If egos were water, they’d have to call FEMA for flood recovery.
Sarah Cho’s Screen Time is not about adoption but about Ben and Julia who are expecting a baby–their first. What do modern expectants do? They download an app to help them download their bundle of joy. What could go wrong?
The last three are all staged readings of new plays and all three take place at the Urbanite from Sept. 19-21. More info at urbanitetheatre.org.
The Sarasota Players, the longexisting (96 years) community theater group, are putting on the 2006 musical The Wedding Singer at Studio 1130, located in The Crossings at Siesta Key Mall on S. Tamiami Trail. This musical was based on the Adam Sandler/ Drew Barrymore movie of the same name. And, while Billy Idol was in the movie, because of scheduling conflicts, he will not be performing in Sarasota. This is not a “they fall in love, fall out of love, fall in love again” kind of movie–it’s much more complicated. But it is a fun show and has great songs. Move info at the player.org.
