Hello Del Tura, My name is Cindy Swisher, and I am thrilled to be taking over editorship of The Tower. When my husband, Keith, and I moved to Del Tura in the fall of 2019, the paper played a huge part in getting us familiar with our new community and helped us to feel more at home. From the monthly articles on community resources such as CERT, FISH, and the Loan Closet to the monthly event announcements, it helped us navigate, and still does, life here in Del Tura. I take this position seriously and hope to continue to help make The Tower the helpful, important resource it has always been.
ELECTION RESULTS
As a friendly reminder all submissions to The Tower must be sent to toweredit@yahoo.com or delivered to The Tower mailbox in the HOA office by the tenth of every month. This allows us enough time to assemble the paper and get it to the publisher by the sixteenth. After the layout is complete, it is returned to us for proofing. Once okayed, The Tower is printed and delivered to the HOA office by the last Friday of the month, where the hard-working distribution team divides them into routes and gets them delivered to all HOA members. Everyone’s a winner! On February 12, 2022, the Nomination and Election Committee (Committee) convened in the Royal Palm Room to open and count the ballots cast for the 2022 HOA Board of Directors elections. On February 16, 2022, the Committee delivered its report of the results of the 2022 election for seats on the HOA Board of Directors. Following is a summary of the results as delivered to the Board: A total of 730 residents were deemed eligible to vote and received ballots directed to their address on file with the HOA. The voting process was carefully designed to provide complete anonymity over the ballots. Of the 730 ballots, 380 members responded. A number of mailed ballot envelopes were returned by the Post Office as undeliverable. A Committee member attempted to contact those members whose ballots were returned and every effort was made to deliver those ballots to the members in time to vote. Of the 380 ballots which were returned, 12 ballots were deemed invalid and 368 were deemed valid ballots for counting. After tallying the votes on these 368 valid ballots, the ranked order of candidates, in order of the most to the least votes received was as follows: Cindy Baron, Lisa Bellanca, Kathy Williamson, and Susan Bell. Pursuant to the Bylaws, the three candidates receiving the most votes are installed for three-year terms and the remaining candidate will fill the one-year term left by the vacant Board seat. In other words, all candidates are WINNERS! When next you see your candidates and other current Board members, please thank them for their service to our community.
A copy of the election results was posted on the HOA Bulletin Board in the Clubhouse and the Tally Sheet has been posted on the HOA web page. Members who kept a record of their control (envelope) and ballot number may go to the tally sheet and verify their votes were correctly recorded. The Nomination and Election Committee will retain all election records as prescribed in the Bylaws. The Nomination and Election Committee is looking for volunteers to serve on next year’s Committee. YOUR NOMINATION AND ELECTION COMMITTEE AT WORK! After months of careful planning, preparation, and hard work, your HOA Nomination and Election Committee convened on February 12, 2022, to count ballots for the annual Board of Directors Elections. As required by the HOA Bylaws, all votes were anonymously cast. The authenticity of ballots and vote count were verified by Committee members Ruth Blevins, Michaelene Cruz, Lisa Francis, Linda Storma, and Daniel Cruz. The results of the election were presented to the Board, as scheduled, on February 16, 2022. In addition to the Committee Members who worked so hard to make this election run smoothly and transparently, the Committee wishes to thank Cindy Briton, Cindy Swisher, and Meg Valentino for their help in generating the membership list
and their work to inform the Community about the election and candidates. Also, the Committee wishes to thank all the HOA office volunteers for their help in receiving and securing the ballots. Most of all, the Committee wishes to thank the Candidates for stepping up to serve their Community and Membership for casting their votes. The Nomination and Election Committee is looking for volunteers to serve on next year’s Committee. FISH welcomed two new board members at our annual meeting. They are Carol Dubel and Linda Storma. FISH also has two new drivers, Linda Petersen and David Szadaj. Thank you to all the new drivers that have come on board in January and February. You have saved the transportation part of our organization. I am sure that the residents who may need your kindness certainly appreciate you. Whenever you might need a ride just call our FSH number (239-997-3474) and leave a message stating your name, telephone number, and when and where you need to go. Please give us 48 hours’ notice so we can find a volunteer to drive you. As soon as we have a driver you will be called by the driver to make final arrangements, such as what time you will be picked up. That way you will know the volunteer who will drive you. Our driver will pick you up at your home, take you to your appointment, and drive you home. Remember, this will cost you nothing! Our FISH volunteers use their own cars and their own gas and time. If you are having a knee replacement or any operation, don’t buy any equipment; FISH has a trailer full of any piece of equipment you might need to aid you in your recovery.
Again, just call the FISH number (239-9973474) and leave a message stating your name, telephone number and what you need. If you call while you are still in the hospital the equipment will be delivered to your home before you are even released. And, once again, the equipment is yours to use for as long as you need it and there is absolutely no cost to you. It is just one of many services that FISH offers in Del Tura. To our FISH members, you no longer need to turn in time slips.

As of February 16th, 2022, the board of directors returned to a 9-person committee. Due to director resignations in 2021, we had been working with two vacant seats. The board felt it was in the best interest of the community to have the membership vote to fill those empty seats at this election, rather than appointing temporary directors. With the election completed, the four recently elected directors took their oath to serve at the February Annual Meeting. Following the regular meeting, the new board voted to place 2022 officers. I am honored that I again was given the responsibility of acting as the President of the
board. The other officers voted in were Art Keen, Vice President, Marylou Buss, Secretary, and Laura Intini, Treasurer. Your other directors serving on the HOA board are, Kathy Williamson, Will Rossman, Dave Tomaszewski, Cindy Baron, and Susan Bell. We have an excellent board serving the Del Tura Community. ONLINE SUGGESTION BOX – WHY BOTHER By Liz Poniatowski
I knew I’d grab your attention with WHY BOTHER, right? Well, I’ll tell you why it’s worth taking the time and submitting a suggestion to the HOA using their online suggestion box. In September after I used a chair from the Royal Palm Room to hold the door open yet again, I thought to myself. “This is silly. There’s gotta be a better way.” So, I went home, wrote up an email asking the HOA to go to Hometown America to ask them to install kick down door stops on all the ballroom doors. I included a picture of a basic one along with the cost per unit and a suggestion on where to buy them, and I included my name, address and telephone number. I sent the email to the suggestion box at DTHOASuggestionBox@gmail.com and
within a day I received an email back letting me know that they received my email and will take it up with Hometown at their next monthly management meeting. Well, we all know things take time… after 4 months I went back to use the room again and noticed the doorstops were installed! Now we do not need to drag a chair over to prop open the doors when using the rooms. We DO, however, need to remember to kick them up again when we leave so the doors remain closed when not in use. So… WHY BOTHER? You “bother” to start things rolling in the right direction and hope for the best. THANK YOU, HOA, and THANK YOU HTA. Your action did not go unnoticed! Now I await the outcome of my other suggestion.

COUPLE OF THE YEAR Couple of the Year, Dan and Sue Larson When we moved to Del Tura, we went to as many events as we could in order to get a feel for our new community. Although we did not know a lot of people, I always saw Dan and Sue Larson, either helping at an event or participating in the event(s). They always stopped to say hello, invite you into their conversation, and made you feel comfortable and welcome. Now that I have been here for going on 4 years, I still can count on seeing Dan and Sue at most community events, participating, or volunteering in one way or another. Recently I was working with the new Tower Circulation Coordinator. Because of an unexpected change in Tower Staff, we were concerned about getting the February issue distributed on time. Not only did the Larson’s immediately volunteer to step up to be Distribution Coordinators, but they also volunteered to take on additional routes in order to assure all our HOA members received their papers in a timely manner.
You will see Dan and Sue arriving early on Tuesday to sell raffle tickets at coffee in order to help fund our social hour. If you go to HOA Pancake Breakfasts, most likely you will see them collecting tickets at the entrance. Dan has recently taken on a new role as a proofreader for the HOA Website. PERSON OF THE YEAR Person of the Year, Ruth Anten A perfect description of Ruth Anten is that she is a quiet ‘angel’ in our community. Every week she bakes brownies and blueberry muffins to take to our community shut-ins, anyone who is ill, or those who just need a smile and a word of cheer. She even bakes gluten free for those who need it. I personally experienced her kindness when I had a minor procedure. I am not sure how she found out that I was down for a few days, but she delivered blueberry muffins to my house along with a get-well card. Ruth worked to help to recruit riders for this year’s Santa Shuttle. We hosted a cart ride for community members who do not usually get out to see Christmas Lights. As we planned this event, I learned how many people know Ruth in our community, and the admiration they have for her.
Did you know that Ruth sends cards to our residents who are ill, celebrating a birthday, experience a loss, or just need a ‘thinking of you’ note? This thoughtfulness adds up to hundreds of cards a year. Ruth does this all by herself, out of the kindness of her heart, and at her own expense. Ruth has been an active member of FISH for years and serves as co-chair of the Holiday Basket Program. She gets people to hand out fliers and pick up donations. This is a huge job that takes hours of reaching out to volunteers, including snowbirds who may not be in town. In addition, Ruth helps out at the community Craft Fair raffle table, selling tickets. Ruth is someone you can always count on to step up and help out. She does everything with a smile on her face and with a big hug. Thank you, Ruth, for all you do! Written by Lisa Bellanca

If Dogs Could Talk
Written by Russ Thomas edited by Joan Johnson Daisy’s Story It was a Thursday about noon. I was just driving to Walmart when, on a whim, I pulled into the Shell Factory’s flea market. At the first vendor stand I bought a box of bags for a dollar. I only had a $20 on me, but they happily made change. I continued on through the rows of vendors, and at the last stand I saw her—a small puppy tied by leash to the leg of a table situated on the hot cement slab. I was shocked to see not a sign of food or water anywhere near and the temperature had to be in the 90s. Something kicked in and before I knew it, I was asking whether the puppy was for sale. Maybe it was pity or even fear for her life, I don’t know. I already had a dog. I certainly didn’t need another. But this puppy was so adorable, I just had to save her whether she needed it or not. “Is this puppy for sale?” I asked. The lady replied she was just watching the sale table but she would get the owner. When the owner appeared, she asked “How much?” Without thinking, I said “$20.” She agreed to the price, so I opened my wallet, knowing full well I only had $19. I slowly pulled out a $10, then a $5, and even more slowly counted out the four $1s. She waited. She was ready to start tapping her foot. It looked like the deal might go south, so I dug into my change pocket and as luck would have it, found four quarters mixed in with the lint. “You can’t have the leash or collar though,” she said, handing me a wiggling puppy and snatching the money from my hand. She couldn’t have cared less about losing the puppy, which I now carried across the lot to the parking area. Once we were both safely in the car, I headed home, all the way wondering what I had just done. Daisy is now my son’s dog. He named her. She has all her shots, she’s been spayed, and I believe I saved her from a hard life. Good deeds don’t always go unpunished. She’s one happy dog and she has made our life the better with her presence.

At the dog park, we have all voiced our opinions about her DNA and how big she might become. She is still growing, so only time will tell. We also think she might be a Black Mouth Cur, though I’m seriously hoping something smaller might be mixed into her pedigree. According to Wikipedia the Black Mouth Cur is a medium to large sized, athletic, muscular breed of dog. The breed varies considerably in height, typically standing between 16 and 25 inches. But, and this is a big but, individual dogs have been known to reach 28 inches and can weigh up to 100 pounds!! Good heavens! Dog lovers know that every breed has its own personality and needs. They’ll also warn that no one should ever adopt a dog without considering how compatible with their own lifestyle a potential dog will be. And I agree wholeheartedly. But… And this is another big but… Every day I grow more and more happy with little Daisy. She’s courageous. No dog at the big dog park can scare her. She’s also funny and a general delight. All the big dogs love her almost as much as we do. Maybe some day she will eat us out of house and home or drag me across the parking lot. There’s no way to know. But I think sometimes it’s wise to ignore the “no” voice in our heads and do the impulsive thing. Doors close and others open and if we’re not willing to risk once in a while, we have to live with always wondering what if. Was it Fate that brought me to the Shell Factory that day? What would have become of Daisy with an owner who cared so little about her welfare that she would happily give her pup away for $20? Most of all, how much happiness would we have missed if I hadn’t just happened to have those extra four quarters? Please do not block the gate. All dogs with good dispositions are welcome at the dog park.

ARTWORK REQUIREMENTS The purpose of the following requirements is so that all communication propaganda is consistent, correct, timely, and usable for the various electronic communication vehicles in use by Del Tura such as the Tower, the Del Tura Website, and the electronic sign at the entrance to Del Tura.
Requirements: • Must be submitted in PDF format. JPGs can be used for graphics on flier. Flier can be created in word or any other formatting software but must be saved/submitted in PDF format. • Committee/Group/Club chair must proofread and sign off before submission, no changes after submission. • 1 flier per event • 1 slide per Committee/Group/Club for the electronic sign at a time. If multiple events are scheduled close together, they will be combined on the sign and a reference to the website for additional information will be added. The website can have multiple fliers from a committee/ group/club at a time. • Events that are HOA sponsored or endorsed must state “HOA sponsored” or “HOA endorsed” on the bottom of the flier. • Fliers can be posted on the website and added to the website calendar as soon as they are received. FYI, tickets cannot be sold more than 3 Tuesdays prior to the event. “Love is in the Air” “Love is in the Air” was a song written in 1977 by George Young and Harry Vanda; the song was sung by John Paul Young (no relation) and became a worldwide hit in 1978. I have always liked the lyrics of this song and the positive message that it has brought to us over these past 44 years. It has outlived the test of time and it’s a song that I strongly feel will continue to inspire us as we endure these unpredictable times of our lives. “Love is in the air, everywhere I look around Love is the air, in the whisper of the tree Love is in the air, every sight, and every sound Love is in the air, in the thunder of the sea And I don’t know if I’m being foolish And I don’t know if I’m dreaming Don’t know if I’m being wise Don’t know if I feel safe But it’s something I must believe in But it’s something that I must believe in And it’s there when I look in your eyes… And it’s there when you call out my name…” When I hear this song, it gives me a feeling of hope that things will be alright. Even when we doubt ourselves, for whatever reason that might be. It reminds us that in order to feel love we need to stop and look at all the beauty that surrounds us in this world. Sometimes it’s difficult to feel it in ourselves, or to see it in others but we have to continue looking for signs that will help all of us find the happiness we all deserve. For example, on Valentine’s Day we feel the love by seeing the glow on the faces of happy couples as they celebrate their love. And think about how we feel when we hear a child’s laughter? We can find so much love and happiness when we take the chance and look outside of ourselves. Before we can feel the love we need to be inspired by the beauty of the people and nature that surrounds us each day…the beauty that comes in the form of a silent gesture, or our everyday observations; the sweet song of a morning bird, the gentle breeze that gently caresses your cheek, the gorgeous morning sunrise, the awe-inspiring sunsets… Feeling the love that is in the air will be a different experience for all of us. The Good Timers Women’s Club is growing in size. At our February meeting we welcomed eight new members bringing us to over 70 members total. Our monthly luncheon last month was at Lobster Lady and the women enjoyed a delicious meal and some lively conversation. During the “in season” we try to have numerous activities planned so all the members have a chance to participate. Along with this month’s luncheon to be held at Isabel & Annabel’s Mexican Restaurant in Punta Gorda, we also have a Pot Luck BINGO on March 9th. Two bus trips are planned… one day trip and one 3-day trip for the month of March. Bette

Bette can give you all the information and she’s in the phone book. Our meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month. We gather at 4:00 to socialize and celebrate the months birthdays with a little something sweet to eat and then at 4:30 we begin our meeting which usually lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. CRAFTIN’ IN “THE HOOD” Come join us on Tuesdays, after coffee until about 3:00, in the Starlight Ballroom. We quilt, knit, crochet, spin wool, and do other various crafts. HALL OF FAMERS COME TO DEL TURA On January 19th, I had the honor of going to the shuffleboard Hall of Fame induction for anyone in the state of Florida who earned enough points to become an elite member of such a great organization. This was hosted by Del Tura and held in the Starlight ballroom for over 150 attendees. I want to sincerely thank Gail Hodge for going with and taking photos. The best part is that, as of the 19th, Del Tura has its first Hall of Fame member! Deb Norton has now earned over 200 points to become a Hall of Fame member. She and husband Jack moved here in 2017 from Landmark in North Naples. Deb grew up in Massachusetts and started playing shuffleboard in 2007. Deb won the southern district Amateur Masters three times and won the State Amateur Singles in 2014. She accrued enough points to become a pro in 2015. She won the Southern District Pro Masters in 2017 and 2021. She has qualified for four State Masters in her short career and has accumulated four gold and one bronze
FSA Roll of Champion pins. She is currently the 3rd vice president of the southern Florida district. Deb is a member of the Lee County Shuffleboard Club located behind the new North Fort Myers Library where many state tournaments are played on their beautiful 24 courts! She invites everyone to come use the courts during open play at 12:30 during the winter months and 8:30 in the summer. You are also invited to come and just watch when they have their tournaments. Deb’s husband Jack is also a pro from the southern district who is earning points to join her in the Hall of Fame. Remember, shuffleboard is for all ages from grade school to retirement. Del Tura is blessed to have Deb and Jack as well as Bill Hamilton as pro’s representing Del Tura. Good luck and thanks to all three for representing us so well. By Glenn Tointon

18 HOLE WOMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION Member-Member Tournament The tournament was a success with members playing over a 2-day, 36-hole event. We closed it out with pizza at the main pool. And we all give a big shout-out and thank you to Carol Burnison and Karen Hahn. They brought us the pizza, set everything up and made sure all we had to do was walk in and start eating! Great job to all, great participation and pretty good weather too! TENNIS AT DEL TURA President, Del Tura Tennis Association As always, there is Open Tennis on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for anyone wanting to play from 8:00 to 10:00 am on Courts 1, 2 and 3. Come and join us. All are welcomed. Just show up during these times and you will automatically be included in the group. The winter intra-mural leagues are just about finished for the season. It was a wonderful winter season with full teams on Group 1 and Group 2 levels. The competition was close with only a few points separating the players.

Our March Friendship tournament will be held March 12 and 13. This is an open invitational with high level players participating in a round robin tournament. The clinics consist of Drill and Tactics for players wanting to improve on their skills both physical and mental. The drills review ground strokes, services, volleys, lobs and placement on the courts. In addition, tactics are introduced to help use skills more effectively on all aspects of the game. Nonmembers are welcome for a small contribution.
Our series of 6 lessons for beginners are completed. They were well received and a number of participants are showing great promise for becoming very good tennis players. CERT INFORMATION What is Happening with C.E.R.T Our committee has been terribly busy! We had a table at both the New Member and Health and Wellness event(s) in January. Many residents stopped by to inquire about our Team; what we do, when and why. These inquires even resulted in new members joining our group. We used monies donated by the community to purchase ‘Stop the Bleed Kits’ for the community. What is a bleed kit you ask? A bleed kit contains a variety of assorted products, all designed to stop bleeding in various parts of the body in case of emergency. These new kits are located with the AED units at the pools, clubhouse, and pro shop. (The north pool unit will be installed shortly) In February C.E.R.T. hosted a blood drive and thanks to the community we collected thirty pints of blood. Thank you to all that took time out to help others. Going forward C.E.R.T. will be cohosting a Pancake Breakfast on April 9th. Look for information on how to purchase tickets. The HOA will split the profits from this event with our committee. These funds, along with any donations received, will be deposited into our HOA account for future purchases of supplies. We are hoping that you never need to meet our committee, but in case of emergency we are trained and ready to assistant.

TOWER NEWSPAPER When can I expect to receive my monthly TOWER NEWSPAPER? The Tower is scheduled to be delivered to the HOA office on the last Friday of the month. The papers are then divided into routes for distribution by the 46 volunteers. These volunteers have until Monday evening to deliver them.

Well, hello again and welcome to another edition of Pickleball Info. So far, we have talked about how the game came about, balls, paddles, and shoes. This month we are going to start talking about “getting ready to play”. First, like any sport, you should warm up before you just jump right out on the court and start playing. I like to ride my bike up to the courts. This gets the blood flow going and helps warm up the muscles in my legs. If you aren’t a bike rider, you should maybe think about loosening your legs by marching in place (even before stretching). Other muscles you should make sure are warm are your arms and your back. Hopefully, warming up and stretching before will help prevent injuries. Once you are warmed up, you are ready to head out on the court. There is still more warming up to do out there. We haven’t really gotten into “The Game, how it’s played or terminology” yet (that’s another edition), but you should warm up with a “short” shot first. This is done by gently hitting the ball back and forth across the net to the person or people on the other side. All players should be at the kitchen line for this warm up. Remember, you aren’t trying to “win” warm ups. After you have done this for a bit, you can move onto practicing your “dink” shot both straight across the net and cross court. Once you have warmed up your “short” game you can back up and take some long shots, maybe even some serves. Ok, that’s it for this month.

SHUFFLEBOARD LEAGUE Again, due to Covid, our traveling shuffleboard team cancelled their season. However, Six Lakes did come over for a fun day of play which we won by a score of 5-6. Hopefully, next year we can return to our normal league. But with some better news, our Friday league is well underway. After six weeks of play, the experienced side is led by Glenn and Mary Kay Tointon with a 15-3 record, followed by Dave and Judy Lessard at 12-6. At 11-7 is Bernie and Cindy Grilli , and following them are Bruce Blackmore and Lynn Brenfleck at 10-8. In the Rookie league, we have Ted and Barb Luke with a record of 13-5, followed by Ken and Janice Dodge at 12-6 and Bruce Mars and Jim Miller at 11-7. Congratulations should go out to the following four Del Turians for having entered the Lee County Amateur Tournament. All did quite well and had fun doing it, especially considering it was a very cold and damp day.

FROM THE CREATIVE WRITERS WORKSHOP Introduction: Our Creative Writers Workshop continuing to thrive. We had an unprecedented cold weather challenge in January but braved the elements under the banyan tree in our warm clothes and blankets to enjoy our time of sharing our special stories. Just a reminder: For those of you who like to write, or who would like to try, please consider our group. We are meeting on Mondays (twice a month when possible), and will continue to meet at the banyan tree at 11 AM. You can call or email me. My home phone (with an answering machine) is 239-599-4631. I will text everyone with a reminder before each meeting, and ask for confirmation of how many will attend. I am planning on 3/14 and 3/28 at 11 AM for our March dates. Here’s a challenge from a recent gathering and some responses to it: Challenge Four: Taking a Note from the Gratitude Journal One of the more popular journal types, the gratitude journal, serves to record the positive factors in our lives that we are grateful for. The purpose is to nudge us to look through our day and note the people,
the happenings, the “things,” however small, that made our day better or made us smile. Developing a habit of doing so can condition us to not only be more appreciative, but to focus on the positives rather than the negatives. Now, because we are doing this as a creative writing challenge and not a daily journal entry, I would like to see you draw out your observations with some detail to show us how you feel or how you were affected by what you are grateful for. Example: At the end of a long and stressful day, it is good to step back, close my eyes, and re-focus on the simple things. I am so grateful for the beauty of the sunset. For the slight breeze that moves the gentle palm fronds. For the palm tree itself, the image of relaxation that seems to lift my spirits whenever I look at one. For our beautiful Florida blue skies. For the sound of birds outside the window, and the sense of being surrounded by the wonder of nature. On the human level, I am grateful for my family: my husband, my children, my grandchildren. The pandemic forced a shutdown on travel and we missed many opportunities to see our son and daughter, our son-in-law, and our grandkids. I think it was a teaching moment across the globe to not take a single

moment for granted, and we savored any opportunity to Face-time. Here at home, my husband and I began the daily ritual of a cart ride with a beverage, so we could be outside in the fresh air, talk with each other, and even visit with friends while “social distancing.” This is something we still make time to do, and I’m grateful for that. I am grateful for the wonderful people around us. There are so many caring friends and neighbors, and we feel blessed to be a part of this community. I am grateful for my dog; our latest rescue. Adopted in September, nineteen months to the day after we lost his precious predecessor to cancer, this little boy has brought sunshine back into our lives. He is the picture of contentment when he is being petted and is the four-footed image of the purity of love. Challenge Four: Taking a Note From the Gratitude Journal By Charlotte Ping My Soothing Blankie My comfort blanket is a 4 foot by 5 foot fuzzy throw with a nappy soft covering that smells of Downy freshness. I snuggle down in this warm, calming cocoon to take a much-needed siesta. My body clock tells me when it’s time. Usually around 3 in the afternoon, I can feel my body slowing down, like a clock that’s badly in need of rewinding. My limbs are begging for an afternoon rest. I crawl into my queen-sized bed and cuddle with my 17 pound, 3 year old cat, Snoopy, who looks forward to the daily naps, too. He looks like a Florida panther with his yellow green eyes and shiny sleek fur, minus the claws and unpredictable personality. He’s my affectionate bedmate. I try to relax by turning on the tv to catch a show that I haven’t seen, but often find myself dozing off, then waking up to see that I have missed most of the program. When I wake up, it’s hard to leave my comfort zone, but I know I have to get up and face the cruel harsh world again for the rest of the day. Nevertheless, I am grateful that I can do this, since I am blissfully retired and I have the freedom to do nothing all day and rest afterwards! Challenge Four: Taking a Note from the Gratitude Journal By Karen Brennan The Bible has many psalms and verses dealing with gratitude and, for me, at this age and stage in this time and place, psalm 118:24 says it perfectly. “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Having recently escaped the ice and snow of a Canadian winter to wake up here in Del Tura every day, why wouldn’t one want to “rejoice and be glad?” Indeed, I’m grateful for the lovely morning sunrises and the beautiful evening sunsets, the variety of bird songs that fill the air and the many palm fronds that sway in the breeze. The beauty of this special community is overwhelming at times. But it’s more than just the flora and fauna that makes the two of us living here want to “rejoice and be glad.” In truth, it’s the people who have come from many states and different areas of this country that make life so pleasant. I have come to know that Americans are a generous and welcoming people, willing to embrace others and share their good
fortune with people from other countries who wish to partake in the beauty of this wonderful location. Their attitude fills me with gratitude. It is the kindness and inclusiveness of people who have encouraged us to join activities and clubs and who helped us to find a time and location to receive a free Covid vaccination in their country when there were absolutely no vaccines to be had in our own country. It would be difficult to ever forget the gratitude we felt for that life-saving kindness. These experiences and many more remind us from day to day how grateful my husband and I are to be guests in this country, and so with gratitude and sincerity I say, “God Bless America!” Challenge Four: Taking a Note from the Gratitude Journal By Lucille Mineo What I’m grateful for? Oh, let me stop and think I’m grateful that the warm sun rises; also, that it’ll sink. I’m grateful for the frisky squirrels scurrying up the trees. They’re having so much fun they rustle through the leaves. I’m grateful for the tiny bugs that feed the graceful birds. They are to them like Miss Muffett’s delicious whey and curds. I’m grateful for my indulgent husband who’s always there for me. He never fails to support my pastimes and encourages me to be free. I’m grateful to have good neighbors, who cheerfully greet me each day. And happy that their dogs are friendly as I pass along the way. I’m grateful to live in America, the home of the free. It’s growing more important each day to hold onto this liberty. I’m grateful that I have a choice of restaurants to satisfy my cravings. Also that I’m financially able to not drop there all my savings.

I’m grateful for little Tucker, a one-year-old Yorkie, Who gives us a dose of love and sunshine, along with being a little quorkie. I’m grateful for my children, who are a major part of me. If it weren’t for their monthly calls, I don’t know where I’d be. I’m grateful for my lovely home, which makes my life so easy. The fear of something breaking down makes my insides go all queasy. I’m grateful that when growing up I listened to my teacher. Who preached the very importance of making good use of leisure. I’m grateful to God for this beautiful setting in which I have many perks. With all the things I have to do, I wonder how I ever had time to work!

HELP WANTED The HOA Tech Services committee is currently restructuring, and losing, a couple of its members. We need for at least one new member with specific skills. The job duties will entail: • Website Technical Support: • Liaison to HOA Express for the administration of the website • Verify annual payment of bill and update with new payment card when treasurer changes • Review updates to website software • Identify new functionality that would benefit HOA and suggest changes, improvements to HOA Board • Reporting and working on software issues with the website • Administrative support for the Microsoft 365 Business Standard. • Manage users (email accounts, software installed, passwords) • Stay up to date with software changes and make recommendations to HOA Board • Maintain list of all HOA IT equipment (laptops, desktops, printers, camera, etc.) • Admin support for software licenses and billing for software related to the sign such as NOIP, the router, and future software needs. • HOA computer support (software levels, breakage, etc.) • Filming of videos for Tuesday coffee and Board Meetings and posting videos on Facebook and the website. • Eventually, work with committee chair to backup website content, the electronic sign programming and support and the Facebook page content. Members and guests filled a festive room decorated in red, pink and white for Valentine’s, with a variety of pizzas, salad and decadent red velvet cupcakes served to round out the fun. Following dinner, Club President, Justine Fitzgibbons, presented the awards to winners from last year who have waited patiently, since the annual awards dinner for last year was not held. Kathy Klein, Membership, announced Lindy Baney has joined our group, and we look forward to golfing with her and getting to know her better. This will be the last letter for this bingo because it ends on the last night we play which is March 24th. After that I am assuming that Summer-style bingo will continue in its place as it has in the past. I’m sure more information will be announced at the HOA Tuesday morning coffee held in the clubhouse. As of today, February 4th, attendance at our bingo has picked up nicely. With that, the pots that are paid out have also been getting larger, and we all know it’s more fun when we can win larger amounts of money when we play bingo. Also being my last letter, I want to thank all the people who have joined us as volunteers to run this bingo. After losing some people from last year, we were so grateful to fill those vancancies, especially callers. Also, this year we had a lot of people help us with all the work after bingo ended each night, taking everything down and putting it away so that the ballroom was back to the way it was before we set everything up so we could play. That was a lot of time-consuming work that Janet and I had to do by ourselves, so now the help we are getting from other people is really appreciated. In closing, thanks again to all our co-workers, and all those of you that help clean up after we finish each night. We hope all of you that come to play enjoy the time you spend. Come next October, if Janet and I are still able, and the HOA still wants us to run it, we look forward to providing you the enjoyment of playing, and hopefully winning some of the money that is there to be won. Have a safe and enjoyable summer and hopefully we will enjoy ours up in Wisconsin near family like we do every summer. ~ Jack & Janet

The “Holy Splits” of the Del Tura Bowling league continue to be in first place, followed by Pinball Wizards in second place and 3 Balls and Bags in third. Individual high averages in Week 12 are Tom Larson, Tom Wight, Dan Larson and Denise Rose, Sue Brown and Janet Huss. High Handicap Series in week 12 are Pat Henry, Tony Durand and Bernie Forsey for the men and Debbie Roush, Chris Bunker and Ace Kelly for the women.
High Handicap Games are Steve Stigall, Kevin Trombley and Danny McDonald for the men and Nancy Ashe, Rita Kidwell and Jan Mismas for the women. Bowland of Cape Coral hosts fourteen teams on Tuesday afternoons at 1:30. This is a fun league and we have bowlers of all levels. League officers are Cindy Baron, Sue Baron and Denise Rose. GATE GABBER By Michael Johnson Okay... Where did we leave off? Oh yeah, in Portland, Oregon... trying to sell magazine subscriptions, door-to-door. Well, we’re traveling back to California. It was the summer of 1965, August, actually. I had traveled out to California with a friend. The drive across the country is a story (stories) for another issue. My friend, John, and I traveled from New York to California following the end of the 1965 school year. We arrived (finally) in California in the middle of July. No jobs, no place to stay, no money! We ended up sleeping on the beach. We met two girls who were traveling to Santa Barbara from Portland. Well, it’s difficult to make a positive impression on the fairer sex when you’re cooking “borrowed” steaks in suntan oil on the beach. I needed to find employment and I needed to do it quickly. An acquaintance I met on the beach told me the Libby canning factory in nearby Sunnyvale was looking for 3rd shift workers. That’s 11 pm to 7 am! (Maybe that’s where my penchant for working overnights came from... If you’ve forgotten, I work overnights Friday and Saturday at the front gate here in Del Tura.) Anyway, back to the story....I applied for a job and was hired the same day (night). Well, my FIRST position at Libby’s was at the end of the Production Line, where I was responsible for stacking full boxes of canned fruit. If you are not aware, there is a special way to stack these boxes. There’s some alternating levels of stacking and some geometric configuration which allows the cans, which have been heated in the process of canning, to cool off in the stack. This was too much for me to grasp, no matter how many times my supervisor showed me the routine. The boxes were on a conveyor belt and kept coming no matter the speed or lack of speed I was managing to arrange them on the pallet at my feet. It was like Lucy and the chocolates! I was transferred to the “dented can room”. My instructions, as best I could understand them, what with thousands of tin cans zooming around overhead on some wild can rollercoaster - the sound was deafening – were that my job involved running around the floor looking for cans which had fallen off the conveyor to the floor below. I had to retrieve the dented cans and hand-carry them to a fenced-in room, toss them over the fence and then race back looking for more I was told the two other workers who held the same position in the factory were out sick, so, this was a three-person job being done by one, me! Thankfully, I was snatched from the jaws of exhaustion and transferred to the “fruit line”. There I was handed a scoop, which held exactly eight cherries. No more, no less. My job, along with another young fellow, was to scoop out of this huge vat of dyed red cherries eight cherries and plop them into every other can that passed in front of me. The other fellow did the other cans. After four hours of doing this I saw out of the corner of my eye what I thought was a person who had been violently attacked and stabbed numerous times ! Actually, what I was looking at was my fellow “cherry picker” who had fallen asleep and tumbled into the vat of cherries, covering his head, neck and shoulders in blood-red dye! Whew! No murder victim. That was my first and LAST day at Libby’s. I never went back. We’ll be seeing you next issue... The Gate Gabber

AROUND THE GROUNDS

We have retooled the Grounds Committee as of January 1st, and we are working together with a new committee formed by the Statutory Committee to look at any items for repair and/or corrections, upgrades, and big-ticket repair items. As outlined below, please forward items to the appropriate committees. The Grounds Committee is primarily concerned with any common area items that are in need of attention such as dirty areas, broken/uneven pavers, electrical lights broken/out, pool areas, shuffleboard, bocce, courtyard, and clubhouse inside/outside. There may be more, but these are items that we need your eyes on so that we can get them to HTA to get work orders generated for repairs. The upcoming Statutory Committee that is being created shortly with their policy and procedures will be requesting more items that are big ticket repairs, upgrades, and possibly new capital items for the following year’s budget. The Grounds Committee does work in conjunction with the Statutory Committee, and all Statutory Committee items are forwarded to the Grounds Committee for review and work orders are requested on common area items as needed. Any residents that have questions about sprinkler systems or trees around the community or at their homes should contact HTA office regarding these items. All common area issues should be sent to The Grounds Committee at delturagrounds@ yahoo.com. Please include the exact location and pictures, if possible, so work orders with HTA can be generated.
