HOA BOARD OF DIRECTOR ELECTIONS AND... THEY’RE OFF!

At their January 12, 2022 regular HOA Board meeting, the Nominating and Election Committee (NEC) presented the slate of candidates whose applications were received by the NEC. Pursuant to the By-Laws, the Board called for nominations and having received no such nominations from the floor, passed a motion to close the nominations.

The slate of candidates which will appear on the ballot for election of officers are as follows (not necessarily in ballot order): Cindy Baron, Susan Bell, Lisa Bellanca, and Kathy Williamson.

The Nominating and Election Committee is planning to mail ballots on January 25, 2022 and, in accordance with the By-Laws, all ballots must be received at the HOA office within 15 days of the date of mailing. Ballots which are received late (after February 9, 2022) will not be considered. Each Ballot will include instructions for completing and returning the ballot.

Please note a return envelope will be provided and your ballot

must be returned in the envelope provided. HOA members may hand deliver the ballots to the HOA office or mail the ballots.

If mailed, members must affix postage to the return envelope.

Ballots which are not returned in the envelope provided will not be considered. Remember, your ballot must be received at the HOA office, either hand delivery or by mail, not later than February 9, 2022. The NEC is not responsible for late postal deliveries and ballots received after February 9, 2022, will not be considered, regardless of any postmark date.

Kathy Williamson My name is Kathy Williamson. A little over a year ago, I applied and was appointed to, the HOA board.

Since taking office, I have been educated regarding the guidelines the board must follow with Policies and Procedures and our by-laws. I now realize that we are a structured governing board that ultimately benefits our owners.

I have maintained my oath of office to the best of my ability; exercise sound business judgement; respect confidential deliberations and decisions; and avoid conflict with community and personal interest. My voting position throughout has been with consideration to the benefit

and best interest to Del Tura and our owners.

Our HOA board consists of nine members with different backgrounds, education, work history, opinions and personalities. However, when the board meets to discuss and vote on issues; we become one united voice.

I am not what you consider a “high-profile” candidate, and you may not recognize my name or face. Most of my efforts have been helping behind the scenes, volunteering for many events through out the years. I have worked with the Welcome Committee for five years and co-chaired a year and a half. I have managed Tuesday Coffee hour for the past year with the help of some amazing volunteers.

I am now running for re-election to the board.

I am counting on your support and vote so I may continue to serve the Del Tura owners and our community.

Cindy Baron My name is Cindy Baron, and I am running for a seat on your HOA Board of Directors. My husband Ken and I have been residents of Del Tura since 2015. In my past life, I was a Sr Vice President in charge of lending for a community bank in New Hampshire. During my tenure there, I served on many boards and committees.

I have previously served on the Del Tura HOA Board as a board member, Vice

President and Interim President during a transition period. I belong to the golf league, play pickleball, work with the Del Tura Rep Theatre, teach ballroom dance and served as HOA membership co-chair. I believe very strongly in the Del Tura community. It’s a vibrant, exciting community and a wonderful place to live. My job, as a board member, will be to listen to your concerns and your suggestions and to do my best to work for you, the HOA members. My hope is that all HOA members will vote in the upcoming election and choose the candidates that you feel will best represent you

Lisa Bellanca My experience with the HOA Board began in 2020 when I was appointed to the HOA board because of vacated board director seats. I must admit that my experience has been a “learn as you go” education. Luckily, I am quick to learn.

My time on the board has been both challenging and rewarding. I have had the title of director, treasurer’s assistant, vice president and am currently serving as president. I was honored to be recognized by my peers who felt I was the best person to manage each of these positions.

When I accept a challenge, I do not stop until I have done my best to complete it.

If you were to ask me what I believe are my best attributes, I would tell you they are my organizational skills and my ability to evaluate situations from all points of view before committing or commenting. Speaking in public is my least favorite responsibility, although I feel I have improved in this area over the last year. Thank you for all your patience as I tried to master this skill.

I work well with others because I always respect their opinions, even if I do not agree with them. During my term I have always felt that I am just one of nine opinions. We may not always agree on issues, but we all need to respect the collective decision of the officers and directors of the Del Tura HOA board.

I would like you to please consider me for a three-year board position because I want to continue to serve the Del Tura community.

I would like to thank everyone for all their support and suggestions as I was learning the ropes. I truly enjoy working for this community alongside the board of directors that you have elected. Del Tura is a great place to live because of the people that reside here.

Speaking of directors that you have elected, don’t forget to turn in your ballots for the HOA Board of Directors election this month.

And last, but not least, our new Tower Editor is Cindy Swisher. Circumstances have put the February publication in her hands on very short notice. With much support from community volunteers and the publisher, Cindy has been able to get this paper coordinated, printed, and out for distribution right on time.

Watch for changes in RMDs If you’re a certain age, you’ll need to withdraw money from some of your retirement accounts each year. But in 2022, the amount you must take out may be changing more than in other years – and that could affect your retirement income strategy.

Here’s some background: Once you turn 72, you generally must start taking withdrawals, called required minimum distributions, or RMDs, from some of your retirement accounts, such as your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan.

Each year, your RMDs are determined by your age and account balances. This year, the life expectancy tables used by the IRS are being updated to reflect longer lifespans. This may result in lower annual RMDs than you’d have to take if this adjustment hadn’t been made.

If you’ve started taking RMDs, what does this change mean to you? It can be a positive development, for a few reasons: • Potentially lower taxes – Your RMDs are generally taxable at your personal income tax rate, so the lower your RMDs, the lower your tax bill might be.

• Possibly longer “lifespan” for retirement accounts – Because your RMDs will be lower, the accounts from which they’re issued – including your traditional IRA and 401(k) – may be able to last longer without becoming depleted. The longer these accounts can stay intact and remain an asset, the better for you.

• More flexibility in planning for retirement income – The word “required” in the phrase “required minimum distributions” means exactly what it sounds like – you must take at least that amount. If you withdraw less than your RMD, the amount not withdrawn will be taxed at 50%. So, in one sense, your RMDs take away some of your freedom in managing your retirement income. But now, with the lower RMDs in place, you may regain some of this flexibility.

(And keep in mind that you’re always free to withdraw more than the RMDs.) Of course, if you don’t really need all the money from RMDs, even the lower amount may be an issue for you – as mentioned above, RMDs are generally taxable. However, if you’re 70½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 per year from a traditional IRA directly to a qualified charitable organization, and some, or perhaps all, of this money may come from your RMDs. By making this move, you can exclude the RMDs from your taxable income. Before taking this action, though, you’ll want to consult with your tax advisor.

Here are a couple of final points to keep in mind. First, not all your retirement accounts are subject to RMDs – you can generally keep your Roth IRA intact for as long as you want. However, your Roth 401(k) is generally subject to RMDs. If you’re still working past 72, though, you may be able to avoid taking RMDs from your current employer’s 401(k) or similar plan, though you’ll still have to take them from your traditional IRA. Changes to the RMD rules don’t happen too often. By being aware of how these new, lower RMDs can benefit you, and becoming familiar with all aspects of RMDs, you may be able to strengthen your overall retirement income situation.

PICKLEBALL FUN

By Jamie Wyman Hello again, I hope everyone is staying happy and healthy. This month we are going to start by talking about PB (pickleball) shoes. Many people don’t give “shoes” a second thought, but you really should make sure you have the proper shoes, meaning court shoes.

“Tennis” shoes (also known as court shoes) are typically flatter, with specifically designed tread on the sole that can handle quick starts and stops, side to side, and back and forth movements.

They also usually have reinforced toes, extra support on the sides for stability, and are built for use on hard surfaces. Running shoes are a bad idea because they are not designed for lateral movements. They are designed for repetitive forward motion like running or walking. Even though they are lightweight and flexible, they have very little support on the sides which makes them a bad idea for PB. Another thing to consider is the surface you are playing on; gym floor or hard surface. Volleyball shoes are made for an indoor “court “and could be used for PB if you are playing indoors. However, wearing these shoes outside would destroy them quickly. As far as the brand of PB shoes, that is a completely personal preference.

How long should you wear your shoes before replacing them? Don’t wait till all the tread is gone or your socks are showing (this is what I do….lol). The time frame for replacing your shoes depends on how much you play and the surface you’re playing on. It’s not uncommon for every 3-5 months. Well that’s it for this month.

If Dogs Could Talk My name is Boo. I came from a shelter called ARC. It’s a nice place—as jails go. I came to Del Tura in August. I couldn’t believe I actually had a “Forever” home and was very nervous. I didn’t like being left alone and would throw fits like Antonio Brown. I even chewed a hole in end of the couch. I caught hell for that, so I haven’t done it again. A friend loaned my dad a crate to keep me in while he was gone. I pretty well wrecked that too. My dad takes me to the Happy Paws Ranch if he has to be away for a few hours. I didn’t like it there at first and frequently jumped over the fence to look for his car in the parking lot. If it wasn’t there I went to the front door and they let me back in. I’m much better now and they say I’m “perfect.” Mr. Brown should see my therapist!

I love my life at Del Tura—especially the dog park. I have many friends there. My favorite sport is wrestling with Bailey.

It looks pretty rough but it’s like professional wrestling. Nobody actually gets hurt. All in all, I’m glad Del Tura is my home.

The above letter from Boo tells only part of the story, for Boo is, after all, a dog. She doesn’t know that after his beautiful golden retriever, Miley, died, her new dad waited nearly nine months to begin looking for another dog. Or that it was a year nearly to the day that out of all the other adoptable dogs, he picked her to bring home.

Dog lovers can’t go long without a canine companion. Once her future dad decided he was too lonesome to wait any longer, all it took was Boo jumping up on him and licking his face for her dad to sign the adoption papers. Boo doesn’t even know how close she came to being put down, for she was originally given to the Lee County Shelter where abandoned and unwanted dogs have only so much time to be chosen before they are killed. Lucky for Boo, Lee County was overcrowded and turned some dogs over to ARC (Animal Rescue Center), where dogs are safe from that terrible fate. That was a close call for Boo and probably one reason she’s not letting her new dad out of her sight.

Her master has no idea why she is called Boo, a ghostly term, but Boo does have some fear issues with being left alone. The first few days she knocked over the garbage and a decorative fake plant. The crate she mentioned didn’t do much to control her because she found she could move it across the floor (thus the sofa’s destruction and a rug as well), force her body between the metal front and side, and even, miraculously, manipulate the latch. In addition, she has pretty much destroyed its floor. So much for crates.

So much for just about anything. When her dad picked her up at Happy Paws that time, he temporarily left her in the car (ignition on, windows closed) while he went inside to pay.

When he opened the back door to return, Boo was waiting on the steps. She’d merely pressed the button, lowered the window, and jumped out. Another time when her dad got overly confident she’d stay by him without a leash, she spotted a rabbit and took off in the dark of the golf course. Her frantic dad thought for sure he’d never see her again, but twenty minutes later, after a fruitless search in the golf cart, he returned to find Boo calmly waiting at the door.

She’s not going anywhere.

Her dad maintains it has taken the patience of Job to build confidence and trust that he won’t abandon her. He’s practiced leaving her for five minutes, then ten, now fifteen, hoping she will at last believe that he is coming back, that she’s safe, that she truly does have a “forever home.” What she doesn’t fully understand yet is that, according to her dad, she is a perfect dog—gentle,

FEBRUARY is FISH MONTH Thank you to Joan Koch for calling to volunteer to join our transportation! You, too, can give Ginnie Benjamins a call at 239-322-9863 to volunteer. FISH always needs drivers. Just imagine someone you care about has sprained their ankle and needs to see their doctor. I am sure you would be very pleased if one of FISH’s drivers was available to take that person, wait for them, and then deliver them back to their home. Our drivers do just that! The more people who step up to be a driver, the less time we would be calling on you.

Quite often FISH receives calls about a parent who lives here in Del Tura. Someone who lives up north wants us to go to their parent’s home and they ask us to do many things such as make sure their parent eats everyday, showers, gets out of bed or to just sit with them. We understand how difficult it can be to live far away and be worried about your parents. However, FISH volunteers are just that, volunteers! We are just a group of people willing to give some of our time to help others in this community. We are not trained to be caretakers; we are not insured to be caretakers. Therefore, we must decline any request to be caretakers. If you need someone to check on your parents, please try calling one of the following. We cannot recommend these organizations, but perhaps they can assist you.

If you are not able to contact your parents and are concerned, call the North Fort Myers Police, and ask for “A Wellness Check”. They will check on your loved one and call you back.

I know of a situation where this was done, and it turned out the parent had sold his house and moved without telling his children. When he was finally located, it was found out that a third party had convinced him to buy her a house.

He was not mentally able to understand just what was happening. Now this is an extreme example, but if you need help, the police are there.

FISH is here to drive a person to an appointment or the grocery store, but we need 24-hour notice so we can locate a driver who is free to take you. There is NO charge to you. We are also here to loan you medical equipment you may need for as long as you need it. There is NO charge to you. In fact, it will be delivered to your home and picked up when you are finished with it. We can pick fruit from your trees, give you what you want to keep, and take the rest to a Soup Kitchen.

GOOD TIMERS’ The pursuit of material things is ultimately pointless if one loses the things that are truly valuable to the human spirit.

The members of the Good Timers Women’s Club are always on the lookout to find those opportunities that bring joy to the human spirit.

At our January meeting two of our members, Harriet Hart and Dianne Bevilacqua, provided information for us to start making plans to go on a Holland America 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise in October of this year! Another member, Bette Ewing-Cheney, is already planning bus trips for us to get away for a few days and see some of this beautiful country of ours. We will be having a girl’s trip or two in the very near future! Another day trip that we’re looking into is a mural walking tour in Punta Gorda with lunch to follow. Last month’s luncheon was held at the Captain’s Table in Fishermen’s Village and this month we are going to The Lobster Lady.

Last month a group of us got together for an early dinner at Applebee’s and then over to the AMC to see the movie West Side Story. In the works is another Potluck BINGO to have before our part time residents leave. Our meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month. We gather at 4:00 to socialize and celebrate the months birthdays with a little something sweet to eat and then at 4:30 we begin our meeting, which usually lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes, sometimes longer depending on how much we have to cover. Dues are $30 for the year and checks should be made out to GOOD TIMERS. This month’s meeting will be on February 1st in the Royal Palm. The club is open to all women residents of Del Tura. The new year has begun and if you’re looking for something fun to do then this club is the place for you.

TENNIS AT DEL TURA

WELCOME TO WINTER TENNIS The Del Tura Tennis Association had their annual General Meeting on January 9. The new Board of Directions members are Stan Loson, Alice Harmon, Roy Musgrove, Claude Morrisette, Patricia Somers, Karen Waterbury and Jacqueline St-Jean.

The Friendship Tournament was held on January 15 and 16, 2022. We had a great time and were able to play with people of all levels. Thank you, Denny Erickson, for putting it all together.

Great job!

There is Open Tennis on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for anyone wanting to play from 8:00 to 10:00 am on Courts 1, 2 & 3. Come and join us. Just show up during these times and you will automatically be included in the group.

There are (4) FREE lessons left for our winter session. They are held on Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 11:00 am for beginners or people who need to refresh their skills. It’s not too late to join us if you are interested.

The winter intramural leagues started January 10. There are two leagues of eight players each this winter: Group 1 and Group 2 made of men and women according to a rating system that tries to encourage players of similar strength to play together.

Here’s a challenge from a recent gathering and some responses to it: Challenge Three: A Day in Our Now-Digital Life As we live in a 55+ community, I think it”s safe to say that all of us were around before the dawn of cellphones, and certainly before the rise of social media – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, You-Tube, TikTok, and everything else that is now out there. We have witnessed many changes as devices seemed to take the place of human interaction. We see couples on dates, or families with children in restaurants, and instead of enjoying quality time, one or more of those at the table are looking at their cellphone. Children

are on gaming devices for extended periods of time.

People spend hours each day on Facebook. The list goes on.

There have certainly been positive strides as far as what we are now able to accomplish by having cellphones. But have we paid a hefty price? Please make a short list of both positive and negative impacts of cellphones and the rise of social media. Then, I’d like you to “choose a side.” You can look back to describe what family life used to be like and what we have lost along the way (or perhaps what we hold onto); or you can go with the present and your views on whether the advances have been worth the sacrifice.

This is like comparing apples to oranges. It’s looking at 2 different worlds that we have been a part of and seeing how they have affected us.

Everything was hand written or typed, another time-consuming job.

Personal letters, pictures sent and keeping others informed was a slow process.

Our generation has been lucky (or cursed) to be experiencing both of these worlds.

Positive signs for the old way: There was more interaction with families and friends.

More physical contact was done through indoor and outside sports and games.

People did more camping, hiking, fishing, boating and swimming.

Challenge Three: A Day in Our Now-Digital Life

By Cindy Swisher The distinction between “the internet” and “social media” should be made. While similar, they are also very different. There is no doubt that the internet has done much to make life better in many ways. Being able to bank, shop and have a doctor’s visit from home, especially for those unable to get out, has been not only convenient and time saving, but for some a Godsend. We can research and read and “Google” all manner of things. We can satisfy our curiosity in a moment; mysteries that we used to ponder can now be solved with the click of a mouse. Of course, as with much in life, we must be cautious of what we believe, take things with a grain of salt and, most importantly, use common sense. The internet truly is a doubleedged sword.

Social media is different. And while it can also be a force for good, it often proves to be destructive.

I think of the young couple we recently sat next to when we were out to dinner. They talked a bit, but for the most part, scrolled through social media and email on their respective phones. When they did look up and actually speak to each other, it seemed to be an inconvenience. I admit I don’t know their situation, but it made me sad somehow. I remember when my Challenge 3: “Life……Before the Birth of the Cell Phone”

By Dianne J. Roderick Today as I reflect on life, I can’t help thinking of how different the times of our lives were back then.

I think about how all those very special moments would have played out differently if we had been introduced to the technology of today, specifically the cell phone. Please don’t get me wrong! I realize the advances in this field have been necessary and have an important place in our lives. For example, advances such as Skype and FaceTime have allowed us to connect with our loved ones who live far away from us. How many of us were thankful for those advances during the recent Pandemic? We learned how to navigate through those programs and even though it was frustrating at times, we were so elated when we saw those loving faces and heard those heart-warming voices. Oh, what a feeling!!

I do appreciate all the good that modern technology provides, but for all the good that the cell phone can do, it cannot replace human communication. As I think back about what true communication meant before the invention of the cell phone, I think about

I would get so mad at myself; surely, we could come up with some other topic of conversation? Now, witnessing couples like the one we saw that night, I’m grateful we talked at all!

Then there was the group of teenagers I observed recently at a restaurant on the beach. There were at least a dozen young teens, both boys and girls, in a group outside waiting for a table. They were clearly part of a youth group or sports team or something similar. Not one of them spent the half hour talking to another member of the group. Every one of them was on their phone the entire time. I wondered, as I marveled at the scene, if they were texting each other!

What really stood out to me was that the group leader, the adult, didn’t even seem to notice.

Keeping track of old friends or family members via social media sites like Facebook and Instagram can be a very good thing. However, I’ve often wondered why everyone’s Facebook life seems oh so perfect, while mine is lackluster and boring. Seeing pictures and posts of all the wonderful things the rest of the world has or does can lead to comparison and the feeling of never measuring up, as well as fostering “wants” and “needs” we never knew we had. Contentment gets caught in the crossfire. two people conversing eye to eye, and in that we saw and felt the emotion of another human being. In the flesh;-not some electronic tool that relies solely on verbal sounds! How can we expect to change the direction of our world if we don’t encourage human interaction?

Cell phone use is out of control and it is happening in all age groups. Many people have no regard for others: in cars, in stores, doctor’s offices, and in churches. Do we really need to know the “intimacies” of another’s life? I wonder what is left to say to someone when they finally see each other face to face? Remember how we used to pass the time sitting in a waiting room of a doctor’s office, or standing in a long line a few years back? We had a choice of keeping to ourselves, quietly reading, or conversing with others. When we chose the latter, we were often pleasantly surprised by how small our world actually is! Many times, we found out that we had many things in common: mutual friends or shared hobbies. Somehow it made our wait time less and left us with a good feeling.

Think about those most enjoyable moments of your lives. What made them so very special? Could it be that we were totally in the moment with no interruptionsenjoying our friends and our families? Whether we

But perhaps the biggest pitfall of social media, especially for people raised with it - who do not know life before it was - is that we are losing our ability to be physically present, to interact face-to-face, to simply talk. To pay attention to what is right in front of us, who is right in front of us, without being constantly distracted by things that, by and large, can wait, or if we are honest, can be ignored.

I don’t want to give up the internet, or even social media. They have become a part of my life and tools that I use every day. My hope is that I, and society as a whole, can use them to enhance our relationships with others, not replace them. To keep us connected in a positive way, not to divide us. We must remember that they are just tools, not inherently good or bad.

How we choose to use them is up to us.

REFLECTIONS

By Dianne J. Roderick First people experiences-what do we learn from them? What do they tell us? From the very beginning of our lives and throughout the many seasons that follow we will experience many first impressions. As infants our very first worldly human interaction begins at our birth. Those first precious months of life will set the stage for how we will relate to those around us. The tender touches, loving sounds, and consoling smiles seem to set the framework as to how trusting and cautious we will be throughout our lives.

As young children and later as adults our experiences take us to that unpredictable world outside and suddenly we find ourselves immersed in many different surroundings. In some instances, with people that are not always as welcoming and kind as we so innocently were led to believe. How does one react to these situations? Somehow these life experiences teach us to defend ourselves and protect our feelings in various ways. Some individuals choose to keep their thoughts and feelings within themselves and are often viewed as shy, distant, even cold.

Others exhibit outgoing behaviors and will share their feelings without reservation. Thank God we are all different! With all the differences within each of us there are many needs that makes us the same! Let’s think about this and how we can use those needs to make each other feel better each day.

What are some of the things that make you feel more comfortable? Allow you to relax and help you feel at ease in these different situations? For me, a warm greeting, a hug, and a welcoming smile will say it all!

We may not know what is going on in someone else’s life; everyone has their own personal battles to fight as they travel through this journey. As individuals we cannot change what happened yesterday or predict what will happen tomorrow, but we do have today. We can choose to make it better, even with all our aches and pains, by sharing good feelings and a smile with each other. It doesn’t cost anything, and it will send a message that says, “I care!”

A kind word and the power of that smile can renew hope within each of us!

In this world that we live in I realize how easy it can become for someone to put walls up and close others out. So many people carry hurt and loneliness in their lives. Together we can turn frowns into smiles, tears to joy, dismay to hope, negatives to positives, disappointments to happiness, discrimination to acceptance, loneliness to friendship……. and so much more!

So my friends as we enter this month of hearts and continue to work on our New Year’s resolutions, let’s listen to our hearts and share the love and compassion that was unconditionally shared with us at the very beginning of our lives.

HOLIDAY BASKET REPORT 2021 THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS BASKETS

This year (2021) the Basket Charity Program continued to exceed our expectations. We only did perishable food donations in 2020 due to Covid restrictions, but this year we were able to get back to the full Basket Program. Del Tura continued to grow in 2019 and 2020, and it seems that the new residents are every bit as giving as the existing ones. The Del Tura Basket Program is now 41 years old and still going strong, thanks to the donations (food, money & gifts) by the RESIDENTS OF DEL TURA. In addition to all the donations there is also an overwhelming volunteer effort that makes programs like this possible.

Special thanks also to the Craft Fair Bake Sale for their generous financial contribution.

In 2021 we provided food and gifts to 70 less fortunate families. Every family, at Thanksgiving, received a 12-15 pound turkey, with all the fixings,, plus at least two boxes of staple food. At Christmas each family received a 8-10 pound ham, with all the fixings plus at least two boxes of staple food. We also provided gifts for everyone in each household. This amounted to over 500 gifts.

As you can see from the financials (shown below) the Basket Program is positioned to help 70 families again next year. We will also be donating money to a needy charity in the early 2022. It may look like a lot of money being carried over into 2022, but those funds allow us to buy gifts all year long. The Christmas Gift costs shown in 2021 are smaller than usual since we had already bought many gifts planning for the 2020 Basket Program that did not take place due to COVID. For those of you that do not know what the Basket Program is all about, we ensure each family receives Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners as well as boxes of staple food. At Christmas, we provide gifts for each family member living in the household. The community food donations and financial contributions allow us to make sure that each family is provided for. As we have in past years, Christmas gift buying has already begun for Christmas 2022. By buying throughout the year, we are able to take advantage of sales, to ensure there are adequate food and gifts for the 2022 Families Again, our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to the holiday collection and to all the volunteers that collected, wrapped and packed the baskets. We would like to mention all of you by name but the list is just TOO long.

By Michael Johnson When I left you last month we were in Portland, Oregon.....I’m gonna continue with that location, if you don’t mind. After the fiasco at the restaurant and my dishwashing adventure, I needed to find some way to provide income....I looked in the local newspaper and found a job where I could, “make my own hours and make as much money as I was willing to work for.”

Well, this sounded perfect to an inexperienced young man....

I called the number provided in the newspaper ad, and spoke with a fast-talking man who said I could come to his apartment and we could discuss the job. I borrowed my girlfriend’s car and went to see this fellow.

I arrived, knocked on his door and was greeted by what I would describe as a scruffy older man, who looked as though he just got out of bed.

“Oh brother” I thought to myself.

He asked me to sit down while he went into the bedroom and got some paperwork. The paperwork consisted of a single piece of paper clipped to a clipboard. He handed it to me and asked me to read it.

“Hello, my name is (fill in the blank), I was wondering if you received your complimentary copy of Life Magazine?”

The fellow explained that there was no complimentary copy of Life Magazine mailed and that this was just a ruse to begin a conversation with the unsuspecting homeowner. A conversation intended to sell magazine subscriptions!!

Well, I thought this was going to be a gold mine...Easy as pie, right? WRONG !

The next day he picked me up at my apartment and drove me out to what could only be described as a very poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Portland. He had explained that I should just read off the clipboard as soon as someone answered the door.

He left me with forms to complete upon successful sales and told me he would be back in the neighborhood about 3 PM. I knocked on the first door, no answer. Second door, no answer. I knocked on the third door and was greeted by a woman in her early thirties, who looked bedraggled. I began my spiel and was anxiously awaiting her response to the Life Magazine question, when I looked over her shoulder, back into the house where I noticed an ironing board with an iron on it and a small flume of smoke coming off the surface of the ironing board. The woman had apparently seen me looking toward the house’s interior when she turned around, saw the increasing smoke and began yelling. I took this as my cue to leave. After several more attempts at the magazine selling endeavor, I was greeted by an elderly woman who asked if I was interested in making a few dollars. I was broke and didn’t see much future in the magazine-selling business, so I asked what she had in mind.

“Would you be interested in cutting my lawn?” I put down my paperwork and began cutting the grass. About half way through, the fellow who dropped me off drove down the road and saw me cutting the grass. He told me I would never make it as a magazine salesman, took my paperwork and drove off. I finished the lawn, collected my five dollars and began my long walk home.

I’ll see you next month when you’ll learn about my job at Libby’s canning factory in Sunnyvale, California.
