SEASON UPDATE Our Tara Woods’ Bowling League season has come to another end; it was another great season. We started the season with 17 teams and a blind team filled in with our latecomers. As every year, we also had our Banquet. This year it was at Bianca’s. They did a very nice job for us. A Big Thanks goes out to my V.P., JoAnn Stovall, for all her hard work - also to my helpers at the banquet, Barb Goodhue and Jim and Sandy Dahlhofer. Plus, all our individual prizes for High Average, High Scratch Game, High Scratch Series, High Handicap Game and High Handicap Series. Those prizes are in as well as 1st, 2nd, 3rd places for both Ladies and Men. Our Most Improved went to Claudette

Burke, as she started with a 74 average and ended with a 100 average. She did wonderful as she had only Candlestick bowled before. We would love to have more Bowlers and subs for next season. Our meeting will be in September. Date to be announced later. Come join in the fun meeting new people and new friends. You need not to be an expert bowler, it is for fun and friendship. If you have any interest in joining in all the fun with us, please call Julie Wehrung at 239-543-2268. If no answer please leave a message. I will return your call.

See you all next season. Have a Safe and Healthy Summer!

FROM THE PRESIDENT Farewell snowbirds and our Canadian residents. Those of us here year-round will now enjoy a quieter lifestyle with less traffic, more convenient parking, relaxed shopping and eating out at our convenience. We enjoy your company while you’re here, but also look forward to the “downtime” left by your absence. We’ll be ready for your return in the Fall and Winter. Our lifestyle may slow down a bit, but there is still plenty going on in Tara Woods, as you’ll see in this Columns. Sometimes events pop up at the last minute, so visit the Clubhouse and check out the bulletin boards. You may find something you’d like to be a part of. The Board of Directors is hosting the July 4th Picnic once again this year. It will be catered, with “Ballard’s BBQ” providing Pulled Pork Sandwiches, BBQ Chicken, Baked Beans and Cole Slaw. As usual, Bring Your Own Beverage. Dessert will be provided also. Look for the article

in this issue of the Columns for more details. Thank you to Bill Black and Friends for hosting a great “Meet & Greet Ice Cream Social” in April – and Karaoke, too! Lots of people were there to enjoy the delicious ice cream sundaes, and some of us had a great time sticking around to the very end, cheering on the karaoke singers. Thank you, also, to Bill Black & Friends for hosting the Memorial Day Picnic once again this year. Hometown will be doing some updating to the community during the summer. Lou Dunning and Nancy Wuebbeler informed the Board of Directors that the trees will be removed from the Clubhouse parking lot and eventually replaced with magnolia trees. A “French” drain will be dug to help alleviate the flooding we experience all summer. That’s good news! Thank you, Hometown. The request sheets for the Community Opportunity Fair are starting to come in. There is still

plenty of room, so please consider having your group participate. The Fair will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Clubhouse. This should be a fun afternoon, as well as informational. Keep the applications coming! I expect more in September and October. We’ll accommodate everyone to the best of our ability. We have several new people living here year-round. Please make them feel welcome. Saturday Morning Coffee will be every Saturday at 8:00 a.m. from June through October. This is a great time to meet people and hear about what is happening in Tara Woods. Pancake Breakfast will resume on the second Saturday in November. Have a wonderful summer. Stay cool and enjoy our beautiful, lush community when the summer rains begin. Hope to see you on July 4th. Janet Daly

THE MAGIC OF TARA WOODS T-SHIRTS We are in the process of organizing a list to take to the supplier of the shirts. I cannot give you a price for the shirts and lanyards just yet, because, like anything else, the size of the order will determine the price. We have a picture of the shirt

here. The new ones will be Hanes 50-50 poly/cotton in royal blue with screen printing. We are trying to keep the color as close as possible to the previous one. Again, we should have them in time to wear to the 2018 Appreciation Day. Any questions or concerns, please

either e-mail me at amill57766@ comcast.net, or call me at 239-5432954. Some people forgot to put sizes on their order, so I will try to contact you. Ann Millette

NEW ENGLAND CLUB Thank You to our Club members who have already donated towards our “Coolers of Cheer” for the Tara Woods Craft Fair raffle! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. See you at our Welcome Back Party, Saturday, October 21st. Information for this party will be posted early September and sign-ups will begin the third week of September. Judy Machnicz

The Sewing for Charity group had another very successful season. We made and donated over 50 tote bags that go on walkers or wheelchairs, along with 24 lap quilts. I would like to thank Barb Pollitt, Marie Peidlow, Dottie Hargrove and Sandy Dahlhofer for their help with these projects. I could not have done it without you. Thank you for making my dream a reality. I would also like to thank those who donated fabric. Without these donations, these projects would not be possible. We will start up again in September, meeting every Tuesday from 10-12 in the Craft Room. We are always looking for volunteers to help, whether it be sewing, cutting or pressing fabric. If interested, please call me at 239-599-4264. Susan Uccello

FMO NEWS

TRIBUTE TO A SOLDIER

It’s hard to believe, but another season of FMO, Federation of Manufactured Home Owners, meetings has been completed. Meetings will start up again in the fall. Just because there are no meetings doesn’t mean that your leaders have taken a break or our representatives in Tallahassee aren’t busy. They are busy preparing legislation and an agenda for our elected leaders for next season. You may have heard that some of our Tara Woods Homeowners Association officers attended a training season put together by FMO. The training provided information on 723, the document with all the rules and regulations governing communities such as ours. If you would like a copy, please let me know and I will do my best to get you one. We are always looking for any of our residents wishing to join our team. The require-

The Tribute to a Soldier statue project was established to honor the dedication and achievements of our men and women in the armed services of the United States. The project was the vision

ment, schedule permitting, is to attend one meeting a month for approximately 2 hours. There are approximately 6 monthly meetings a season. Meetings are held on the second Friday of the month. Information is provided at the meetings, besides partaking of delicious refreshments, finding out what is going on in other communities, but also ways to protect yourself in your own home. The team consists of Bill Parker and Belle and Stuart Berman. Please see anyone of us for additional information. I would like to thank Bill Parker for attending the April meeting while Belle and I were traveling. For those of you who have gone North for the Summer, safe travels and we look forward to seeing you in the Fall. Remember, FMO needs you and you need FMO. Stuart Berman

of two artists, Rudy Diaz, new resident of Tara Woods, and Dan Pardo of Cape Coral. On May 31, 2010, the unveiling of the statue took place with over 1,000 people in attendance. Seed money was

provided by the Cape Coral Community Foundation, and an ongoing fund to assist in maintaining the Veterans Memorial at Eco Park exists today.

INSPIRATIONAL HOUR Clubhouse Ministries Group Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love one another. John 14:34 Our snowbirds have flown to their homes up North. We prayed that they would have safe travels and return safe and sound next winter. We still have quite a few ladies and gentlemen attending our study; all are welcome to join us. We are just finishing our book

“The Gospel of Mark”, and are excited to see what our leader has in store for our next study. We want to thank Norman and Betty Jones for their wonderful guidance and great wisdom in leading us through our studies. Those of you who are interested in making new friends, learning from the greatest book ever written (The Bible) and gaining encouragement and love, come join us on Tuesday

Mornings at 10:00 AM in the Clubhouse Living Room. The Ladies Inspirational Hour will not be meeting every month. We will post our next meeting on the bulletin board when we start to plan for our projects: Gifts for our shut-ins and caring boxes for our family members in the military. Any questions, call Ann at 543-9285

PEACE WITHIN: “Today may there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith

in yourself and other. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this

knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.”

Well, here we go again, the dreaded next six months from June 1st to November 30th in our beautiful Sunshine State, Florida. It’s hurricane season. I know these next six months we all need to batten down, pick up our homestead and take one day at a time. Hopefully Mother Nature takes an alternate route during 2017. But what about my fellow furry four-footed friends? Do you have a plan for them? To help ease tensions on this matter, Bailey Speaks on this segment called “Start Getting Ready Now”. Do you have a Pet Plan? Here are some things you should have if or when a disaster should take place. 1. Take a current photo of your pet. 2. Make sure your cat or dog has a good leash and they are wearing a collar with proper identification or they are micro- chipped. 3. Make sure your cell phone number is on their tag. 4. Emergency kit: Pet’s medications, a first aid kit with bandages (like humans), a list of current vaccinations along with their name and phone number. 5. Adequate supply of water with food. Make sure food is in a zip lock bag or pop-up cans for easy opening. 6. A good bowl for food and water that does not tip over. 7. A crate; a safe-haven with proper bedding. Crate train your pet to get them familiar with being in close quarters. 8. A battery-operated radio and lantern so they don’t feel afraid at night. 9. Towels, litter or newspapers along with a litter box for your cat. 10. Wet wipes for accidents should be in the first aid kit but have some for easy access. 11. If you have friends who are out of harm’s way, see if they are willing to care for your pet. 12. Sometimes pre-arrangements can be made with veterinarians’ offices to board your beloved pet. 13. If you take your pet with to a motel, confirm with them that they are “pet friendly”. The list can go on and on, but realize it’s common sense. Remember the #1 Rule; if it isn’t safe for you, it’s not safe for your pets. EVACUATE EARLY! Our Hurricane Committee will post information regarding pets later in the season. I would like to take this moment for my deepest condolence to Joanne and Bob Byrne who recently lost their 18-year-old beloved dog, Charlie. I met Charlie when I moved to Tara Woods. Joanne was riding her bicycle with Charlie in her bicycle basket. To Joanne and Bob, Paw prayers for you as we remember him. Well, this concludes “Bailey Speaks” for this month. “Happiness is coming home to a wet nose and a wagging tail.”

POKER, ANYONE ?!

LADIES! DO YOU PLAY POKER? How long has it been since you’ve played with friends? Did you know there’s a game every Monday night at the Clubhouse just for the ladies? Well, we really don’t have a “No Boys Allowed!!!” rule, but men usually don’t like to play with wild cards and we do. But they’re welcome to play as long as they are willing to “play like girls”. chayote What to Do Pests: Monitor the landscape and garden weekly for harmful insects. Knowing which insects attack a plant can aid in identification and treatment. Irrigation: Watch for drought stress and water as needed if rainfall has been spotty. Focus on new plantings and follow watering restrictions. When rains begin, shut down the irrigation system. Propagation: Produce more plants by air layering, grafting, division, or cuttings. Palms and Cycads: Watch for nutrient deficiencies or other problems and use an appropriate treatment. Pruning: Lightly prune summerflowering shrubs, like hibiscus, oleander, and ixora, during the warmer months to increase blooming. Fertilizer Ban: Numerous municipalities in south Florida prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and/ or landscape plants during the summer rainy season (June–September). See if such an ordinance exists in your area. Lawns: Check frequently for damaged areas and keep insects in check with early treatment. Determine whether yellow and brown lawn

patches are caused by chinch bugs, disease, or lack of water. Take time to determine the cause so your remedy is effective. Rejuvenate areas where grass does not grow well by replacing it with versatile groundcovers. Soil Solarization: Clean up your vegetable garden and solarize the soil for 4–6 weeks to kill pests and disease. Lightning Safety: Be safe outdoors during storm season. July: What to Plant: Annuals/Bedding plants: Summer annuals to plant now include celosia, coleus, torenia, and ornamental pepper. Bulbs: Butterfly lily and gladiolus are bulbs that can be planted during the middle of summer. Herbs: While summer is too hot to start herbs from seeds, many, such as oregano and mint, do well if started from small plants. Vegetables: Plant tropical vegetables, such as boniato, calabaza, and chayote this month. Palms: Continue planting palms while the rainy season is in full swing. Support large palms with braces for 6–8 months after planting. Do not drive nails directly into a palm trunk. What to Do Trees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or

weak branches and pruning if needed. Hire an ISA-certified arborist. Lawns: Determine the cause of any lawn problems before taking action. If an insect is the culprit, treat only the affected area. Rule out disease or sprinkler malfunction. Fertilizer Bans: Numerous municipalities in south Florida prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and/or landscape plants during the summer rainy season (June –September). See if such an ordinance exists in your area. Vegetable Garden: Use summer heat to solarize the vegetable garden for fall planting. It takes 4 – 6 weeks to kill weeds, disease, and nematodes, so start now. Irrigation: Install an inexpensive rain shutoff device to save money by overriding an irrigation system when it rains. If one is already installed, check that it is operating properly. Pests on ornamental plants: Inspect the leaves of ornamental plants for small white dots that may indicate lace bugs at work. Spray forcefully with water to help control this pest. Tropical Fruit Trees: Check for damage to fruit or leaves and take action to minimize the effect of insects and/or disease on developing fruit or the overall health of the tree.

Don’t Let Your Investments Take A “Vacation” It’s summer again – time for many of us to take a break and possibly hit the open road. But even if you go on vacation, you won’t want your investments to do the same – in summertime or any other season. How can you help make sure your portfolio continues to work hard for you all year long? Here are a few suggestions: • Avoid owning too many “low growth” investments. As you know, different investments have different characteristics and can help you in different ways. For example, you typically own stocks because you want them to grow in value so that you can eventually sell them for a profit. Other investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), provide you with a regular source of income and stability of principal – two valuable contributions to your portfolio. However, investments like CDs don’t offer much in the way of growth. So if you own too many of them, you might be slowing your progress toward your important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You can maximize the productivity of your portfolio by owning a variety of investments – domestic stocks, international stocks, corporate bonds, U.S. Treasury securities, CDs and more. How much of each investment should you own? The answer depends on a variety of fac tors, including your age, income, risk tolerance, family situation and specific objectives. Over time, your ideal investment mix may change, but you’ll likely need at least some growth potential at every stage of your life.

Don’t let your portfolio go “unsupervised.” Your investment portfolio can be subject to “drift” if left alone for extended time periods. In fact, without your making any moves at all, your portfolio can move in directions that may not be favorable to you. Suppose you think your holdings should be made up of 70% stocks, but due to strong gains, your stocks now make up 80% of your portfolio. This develop- ment could lead to a risk level that feels uncomfortably high to you. That’s why you should review your portfolio at least once a year, pos- sibly with the help of a financial professional, to check your progress and make adjustments as needed.

• Don’t stop at the nearest “resting place.” Some people hope that if they can get that one “winner,” they will triumph in the investment arena. But the ability to “get rich quick” is much more of a myth than a reality. True investment success typically requires patience, persistence and the resilience to continue investing even during market downturns.

In other words, investing is a long-term endeavor, and you need a portfolio that reflects this reality. The investment moves you make today may pay off for you decades from now. You need to establish your goals and keep them constantly in mind as you invest. And you will never really reach the end of your investment journey, because you’ll need to make choices and manage your portfolio throughout your retirement years. Hopefully, you will enjoy a pleasant vacation sometime this summer. But your investment portfolio shouldn’t take time off.
