FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Hurricane season is coming!!

Now is the time to prepare.

Here are some tips as we approach the June through November Hurricane season. Forecasters predict an active hurricane season, and now is the time to prepare. For more info, check out leegov.com/hurricane. The Lee County ALL HAZARDS GUIDE is available in the Clubhouse.

Please fill out the contact information form that Hometown America has prepared for those residents who are not here during the Hurricane season. It provides the Office with your information so that they may contact you in the event something happens to your home while you are away. You can find the forms in the Clubhouse by the gold mail slot or on the TWHOA website under Online Forms.

You might want to have someone look after your home while you are away.

For those of you who have Special Needs, please plan to assure your safety in the event of a catastrophic hurricane. Check out leegov. com/hurricane, search for special needs, and fill out the necessary forms.

Personal Preparedness

A five-step plan must be devised to combat the challenges posed by disastrous hurricanes in Florida.

1. A Communication Plan

1. Always have defined meet-up locations and list the agencies and contacts to reach in case of need. Every family member must know about this list.

2. Make a list of contacts and place it visibly in your home. You may also share it digitally with all family members.

FMO FOR YOU

The FMO (Federation of Manufactured Homeowners of Florida) advocates for Florida manufactured homeowners on leased land. To be effective, the FMO District President is charged with appointing a Community Representative. It is my pleasure to appoint Tara Woods resident Sherry Kay as the Park Rep for us in Tara Woods.

2. A Medical Kit

1. Store food and water to last three to seven days. Also, consider your pets’ needs.

2. Seven days of medication and medical supplies. If anyone in your family needs refrigeration of medicines like insulin or any power device for their medical needs, then arranging ice blocks, coolers, or battery banks is also essential.

3. Have multiple copies of your health insurance and other documents.

4. Always make it a point to learn about first aid and CPR.

3. An Emergency Kit

1. A radio for alerts and authorities’ communication.

2. Batteries for critical equipment.

3. Flashlights

4. Season-appropriate blankets and clothing

5. Cash supplies

6. Dry food items

4. Prepare Your Home.

Preparing your home to withstand the weather challenges and hurricanes in Florida is also critical. It is essential for your safety and to control the financial damage.

Cut branches and fragile trees that could fall.

1. Remove lawn furniture, grills, building materials, propane tanks, bikes, etc., from the yard and bring them inside. Everything that can blow around should be taken inside.

2. Use storm shutters to cover the windows and doors to avoid shattered glass.

5. Get your car ready.

In evacuation, you need a sturdy car with critical kits to evacuate in minutes.

1. Fill your car gas tank.

2. Keep your emergency and medical kits in the car.

3. Keep car documents handy.

Sherry is very active and respected in our community, understands the purpose of the FMO, and has an extensive educational and teaching background that makes her an excellent choice to serve our community. Please join me in welcoming Sherry as our Park Rep!!

Thank YOU for responding by email and/ or phone calls or texting to our legislators and advocating for bills that will help our community be even better!!

What is the FMO doing:

• Providing Homeowners Association (FMO)

training for all members of the Board of Directors.

• Providing a full-service website (FMO.org) complete with decades of historical legal answers.

• Providing representation at Florida Capital (Tallahassee) through an experienced lobbyist.

• Providing a trained/ experienced attorney to interpret/understand Florida Statutes that govern our operation under FL723.

• Providing notification to members through “The Watchdogs” bulletins when action such as contacting your local representative is needed.

Our community owner has multiple resources. The FMO, through its members, has People Power! Be part of the People!!

BOWLING TEAM

Congratulations go to the Guys and Dolls Bowling Team who took first place in the Tara Woods 2024-25 Bowling League.

Congratulations to Randy Murschell, Connie Noah, Wanda Adams, and 3-peat Captain Bill Nothnagel. Bill was presented with a green jacket by his teammates marking his 3-peat league win with three different teams.

Congratulations also go out to Judy Girty and Joe Holman for high average. We also gave out numerous other individual awards as well.

Our next season starts on Wednesday, November 5th, and runs until the first week in April, for a total of twenty weeks of fun, laughter, and a little bit of frustration when the old 7 or 10 pin is still standing; rumor has it that it might be glued down.

You don’t have to be a skilled bowler; as long as your fingers fit in the ball, you qualify. Even if you haven’t lifted a ball in a while, then this is the perfect league to make a comeback or even start your new bowling career.

We also celebrated Bob Bozick’s upcoming 90th birthday with candles on a cake and everyone singing to him. Bob was surprised and thrilled.

Call Judy Girty, President, at 613-702-6874 for more information or to sign up.

Thanks to everyone who bowled this year and to Rich Girty for figuring out all the prize money. ~ Judy Girty

FROM CANADA WITH LOVE

Proceeds were put back into the Tara Woods Community! In March “From Canada with Love” hosted the 2nd Annual successful hot dog luncheon on the Verandah, for everyone in the community. It had an amazing turnout. We had lots of assistance with the set-up, serving, and clean-up, from fellow Canadians here in Tara Woods. As announced at the event by co-chairs Lesley Krauss and Maggie Johnston, all proceeds will be put back into our community. Funds will be used for the betterment, in and around the Clubhouse and the Craft Room, here at Tara Woods.

FRED PUHLFUERST

TWHOA President Peter Krilivsky recognizes and congratulates Fred Puhlfuerst for his twenty-five years of managing the Saturday Pancake Breakfast.

AAAMEN

Those of you who remember the classic Sidney Poitier movie, Lillies of the Field, will remember the song with the chorus “Aaamen, Aaamen, Aamen, Amen, Amen”. Well, if you’ve spoken to people in Tara Woods who play pickleball, you hear that chorus a lot! Why? After several years of subpar courts with widening cracks and peeling paint, those courts have finally been resurfaced and repainted! No more errant shots as the ball hits a crevice and bounces in ways the laws of physics say are impossible! No more keeping an ambulance on stand-by because of worries about injuries caused by tripping over uneven surfaces! Now, if someone’s shot goes in an odd direction or someone falls, they have nothing to blame but themselves...Wait, what?

That’s alright. The Pickleball Group and all the pickleball players at Tara Woods appreciate and thank Chris and Hometown America for making this happen. The courts are beautiful, and the new tricolor scheme is stunning. The colors make it much easier to see when my shots are out of bounds, or I step in the kitchen. Hmmm, Chris, could we talk about the painting?

Speaking of the Pickleball Group, we are saddened that Alice Loveday, who has fearlessly led the group for several years as the lead coordinator, has decided to step down from that role. We will miss her leadership and meeting meals as she moves on to the next phase of her life. The Pickleball Group showed its appreciation for Alice’s hard work and leadership with several rounds of applause at our April 10th meeting. She is proof, yet again, that good things really do come in small packages.

Who can possibly replace Alice? Well, she’s irreplaceable, but we think we have a really good person as the new coordinator in – wait for

it – drum roll please, Linda Faust! The Pickleball Group will continue its work to improve the lot of Tara Woods pickleball fanatics under the leadership of Linda and Jennifer Widener. Next up, lights for the courts and a third court! Hey, you have to dream big!

Last, but certainly not least, the Pickleball Group held its final monthly Round Robin tournament of the 2024-25 season on Sunday, April 6th. Twenty-one competitors burst on the scene and left the newly resurfaced and repainted courts bursting at the seams as they all vied for the bragging rights to carry into the summer break.

The winners, and the owners of bragging rights, are never going to let us hear the end of it. But they earned that right, so here goes.

For the women, first place went to Jennifer Widener, second place to Margaret Baugher, and we had a tie for third place between Teri Burt and Kim Girard. Well played, ladies!

As for the men, yeah, they showed up too.

The winners among the men (no comments please, ladies) were Mike Reszewski in first place, Tony Pinelli in second place, and Mike Renzulli in third place. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone who competed in the tournament! And a special thanks and wishes for safe travels to Lisa Cranston for so capably leading the monthly Round Robin tournament. We look forward to continuing the competition in the fall, if not sooner (yes, that’s a teaser!).

Do you want to know who is writing these witty and imaginative articles? Do you want more? Well, you can get more by learning to play pickleball or joining the Pickleball Group, or, dare I say, doing both! Emails go out on a semiregular basis, and they are occasionally funny or witty, and sometimes even informative. Contact Linda Faust or Jennifer Widener to learn more.

ENTERTAINING NEWS

Hi Y’all! Or maybe I should say “Here I am!” for those of you who attended our last performance of “Saint Peter’s Escort Service” you’ll remember me as Zinnia Priest, and I was one of the fortunate ones who left this world to go to Heaven!

Well, it was certainly a fun play to do. However, that is old news and I’m happy to report that your Entertainers are already busy getting prepared for the next play taking place at Tara Woods in March of 2026! The play next year is called “Rex’s Exes” by Jones Hope Wooten, and takes place in a little town called Sweetgum, Texas! Our Entertainers had their first get-together for a read-through, and let me tell you, there were a lot of laughs as we sat

around that table. I can’t wait for you all to see it.

For our actors, you have your roles and now’s the time for you to begin to learn your lines. Things always go a lot smoother when we have our lines memorized so we can start to make the characters our own! Start now and you’ll be that much further ahead in October when we start rehearsals.

For now, I’ll be signing off...see you next month when I tell you a little more about the next play.

Pat Dunning, Stage Manager & President of the Entertainers

Tara Woods Red Hat Ladies show their creative talents

NEW IMAGE CHORUS

Happy May! Well, I am all tucked up in my little Canadian cottage for the summer months and have the opportunity to reflect on the past winter season at Tara Woods. The New Image Chorus was not as busy as we normally were, but I can assure you that will not be the case next year! We began our practices in October last year with some Christmas music and were able to put on a great sing-along during the Christmas season. We do love to share our enjoyment for singing with our community. In March, we presented a Nostalgia Show starring Randy Riggle who took us on a multimedia walk down memory lane through the 50’s and 60’s. I hope those of you who attended enjoyed it!

Coffee? How about playing a musical instrument?? We are looking for TALENT. Any kind of talent will do... It will take place next year on Saturday, March 28th, 2026, and it’s going to be great! The Chorus will weave their way in and out amongst the talent to entertain you with songs throughout the show. Now that we are all settling in for the hot summer, it is the perfect time to start practicing for this fun event. We will be having auditions sometime in October when our snowbirds start to fly back. Not going to be here until later, but would still like to participate? That’s okay; just let us know, and we’ll be in touch! I really can’t wait to see the talent that I know exists in our wonderful community!! We want to celebrate you!

Next year we will be having our annual singalong again, and then our March show will be a little more community minded, as we present to you “Tara Woods Got Talent!” Do you have a special talent? Are you a closet juggler? A dancer? Do you sing in the shower? Like to lip-sync and dance to Britney Spears? Tell jokes around the table at Saturday Morning

As always, we are looking for new members for our Chorus. We practice on Mondays from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM, and we would love to welcome you. Just come and try it out once! More details as to when the Chorus will begin again in the fall! Goodbye, Tara Woods until October! I’m going to miss you!!

TENNIS ASSOCIATION NEWS

If you are reading this, you are lucky enough to still be down in our beautiful community. I came home to a rainy/snowy mix. It makes me miss the sun and warmth, and, of course, my tennis friends.

If you are new to the park, and are interested in tennis, watch for activity at the courts and jump right in. We have such a wonderful group from novice to competitive. We encourage you to get involved, and we look forward to meeting you.

I want to thank all who got involved this past season, from my fabulous fellow Board members to Lori, for her time and dedication to organizing these articles for The Columns, to Lori and Tim for setting up our Facebook page, and to all of our Association members who come to play and/or watch. Let’s do it again starting in November!!

Sign in, follow us, and post on Facebook –Tara Woods Tennis.

See you all on the courts! ~ Mark Hoffman TENNIS LESSONS

If you are a beginner and want to learn the game of tennis, or if you are already a seasoned player and you want to make improvements in your serve or any other aspect of your game, call Fred Puhlfuerst at 239-731-1552.

OPEN TENNIS

Open Tennis is available all year every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. Because many of our seasonal tennis players have already headed north, and more of them will be heading home this month, there will be less people showing up for Open Tennis. However, all tennis players are welcome to show up at the courts all summer long. Participation at this past season’s Open Tennis days varied somewhat. Some days were full of enthusiastic tennis players. On other days we had only one or two courts being used. Nonetheless, those people who did show up to play always had a good time. If you have an interest in playing tennis, stop by the courts and check it out. All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts.

~ Linda Engel

WHITE TEAM – Stallions

The Tara Woods Senior Men’s White Division tennis season has come to an end. We want to thank all our fans who came to the courts to cheer us on.

With a strong finish, beating Admiralty 4-2 and following up defeating Herons Glen 4-2, we finished the season in third place. Considering the strength of Herons Glen and Admiralty, we did very well.

You can follow us on the Tara Woods

Residents Facebook page. There you will find scores and schedules. Also, we have a dedicated Facebook page for everything tennis in Tara Woods.

Follow this link: https://www.facebook. com/groups/tarawoodstennis

We are always looking for new players, so if you are interested in competing, leave a message on Facebook or see one of our players. You can also come down to the courts for Open Tennis on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 9:00 AM. to play and meet other tennis players.

Also, there are sign-up sheets for the Blue Division and White Division teams on the Tennis Bulletin Board.

See you at the courts. ~ Tim Hoch BLUE TEAM – Tigers

The season for our Tara Woods Tigers ended on March 27th. We hosted the Six Lakes Raptors who won our league. We were proud of our efforts to win 2 sets against the Champion Raptors. We finished the 2024-25 season in sixth place out of nine teams.

Captain Don Swartz has posted a sign-up sheet on the Tennis Bulletin Board for anyone interested in joining the Tigers Tennis Team for next season.

Thank you for your support this year.

~ Tony Gless WOMEN’S LEAGUE – The Angels

The Angels ended the 2024-25 season on March 6th, winning over Six Lakes 5-1. That put us in a solid second place in the SWIFT league. It’s been a good season!!

Find the best ways to pay down debt

Are you concerned about debt? It’s important to recognize this, but, at the same time, you may have more ways of gaining control of your debt situation than you had realized.

To begin with, not all debts are bad — after all, your mortgage provides you with a place to live, a car loan provides transportation, and student loans may have helped you get the career you wanted. In fact, the wise use of debt can be a key part of your overall financial strategy. Nonetheless, if you’re worried about what you owe, you’ve certainly got company. Nearly 60% of Americans say they are struggling with debt, according to a recent study by WalletHub, an online personal finance site. How can you ease these struggles? It may help to follow these steps:

• Know your debt. Create a list that includes your mortgage, auto loans, student loans, medical debt, credit card debt and any installment purchases you’ve made. Then, add up the total amount you owe and calculate your debt-to-income ratio by dividing your total monthly debt payments by your gross monthly income. (For revolving debt, such as credit cards, use the minimum payments in this calculation.) Ideally, you’d like to have a debt-toincome ratio below 35% if you have a mortgage, or 20% if you don’t.

• Look for restructuring opportunities. By restructuring debt, you may be able to pay it down more quickly. You can do this by refinancing debts, perhaps by transferring credit card debt to a new card with a low introductory rate or by replacing your mortgage or auto loan with one that carries a lower rate. You might also consider swapping debts, possibly by using secured debt, such as a home equity loan or securities-based lending, to pay off higher-rate unsecured loans. Or you could consolidate debt by using secured debt to pay off several high-interest debts or transferring multiple credit card debts into one new card with a lower rate and minimal transfer fees.

• Determine how much money will go to debt payments. You do have some latitude as to how much money you’ll devote to paying debts each month. To avoid incurring late fees or other penalties, you’ll need to make the minimum payments, which means a flat amount for some loans, such as your mortgage, and a percentage of the outstanding balance on other debts, especially your credit cards. After you’ve paid the minimum, though, you can choose to pay more, which can shorten the life of the debt and reduce total interest charges, or you can use the money for other goals, such as saving for your retirement or your children’s education.

• Prioritize your debts. If you can make extra payments on your debts, it’s helpful to prioritize them. You could choose the “avalanche” method by paying the debt with the highest interest rate first, or you could instead follow the “snowball” method by first tackling the debt with the lowest balance. The avalanche technique can help you minimize interest payments, while the snowball approach can give you a psychological boost by reducing the overall number of debts you’re carrying, although it could result in your paying more interest over time. Debt may be a fact of life — but if you manage it wisely, life can be a lot less stressful.

AED’S LOCATIONS

If you’re wondering what an AED is – and why they seem to be located in most offices and public buildings, you’re not alone. In fact, because these devices are now commonly available, more people than ever before are curious about them. So – just what is an AED? An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.

Please make sure the GREEN light on the AED is flashing consistently. If it is not, please notify the Tara Woods Office, or a CERT team member.

This AED is located at the north entrance of the Clubhouse.
This AED is located in the Exercise Room off the Pool.
This AED is located in the Craft Room of the Craft Building.
