ATTENTION VETERANS!

Many of you are not aware of USAA Auto and Home Insurance specifically designed for veterans AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS: spouses, brothers, sisters, children, grandchildren, etc. I can attest to the fact that the savings are substantial (for myself and my family) since becoming a member several years ago. You just need to call: 1-800-531-8722 to enroll. YOU SERVED – NOW YOU CAN SAVE! ~ Sam Topping, U.S. Army

This is Old Glory. Is yours faded and torn? Retire her to a proper disposal. Drop her off at 19553 Charleston Circle (Lot #12) or the Guard House.

Also, there is now a Flag Box at the North Fort Myers Fire Department, where you can drop off your old flags. Replacements are available from Bob Glandorf. $8.00

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Spring is upon us, winter will soon be a memory, new growth is happening.

Since September this community has come alive. Activity upon activity abounded. Fellowship, comradery and true and lasting friendships have formed. It is a wonderful feeling to be part of this great family.

As a community family we often have issues with “stuff”. The “stuff”, in my opinion, sometimes is so trivial I often wonder why it is being brought up. I then realize that different people have different priorities than mine, and only then do I realize that the more alike we are, the more different we are. I ask you to ponder that thought when you start to complain about something that in the big picture is not life threatening or life altering. I am not diminishing your concern. I only ask you to ask the question:

FMO FOR YOU

If you are a new FMO member – welcome. We all Thank YOU!

If you are a renewing FMO member – we all Thank YOU!

The strength of the FMO (Federation of Manufactured Homeowners of Florida) is measured by its number of members.

In Lee County we have thousands and thousands of manufactured homeowners. We (YOU) can make a difference! Why join us?

1. Show your support for our unique lifestyle (owning a manufactured home on leased land).

2. FMO maintains a full-time lobbyist in Tallahassee who alerts all members when there is legislation that is in our favor, or that is detrimental to our unique lifestyle.

3. FMO has an attorney who is educated in Florida Law Chapter 723 that governs our unique lifestyle.

4. Another good reason to join now –membership is only $30.00 per year, per household, or (a better bargain) $75.00 for three years. Effective June 1st dues will increase to $40.00 per year, and $85.00 for three years.

a. I’m a part-time resident; does this affect me?

YES – any law passed by the Florida legislature – for example adding 7% sales tax to your lot rent – affects all of us, whether you live here twelve months a year or three months a year.

Community owners are multi-million-dollar companies that are likely to support legislation that benefits them.

RED HAT LADIES

Come join us on Tuesday, April 1st, at 1:00 PM at Tamiami Tavern, 10361 Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda. The sign-up sheet is on the board in the Clubhouse.

“Just how important is this, not only to me but to other people?”

We review many Concern Forms and are amazed at what issues are brought up, because many have been answered in the past, and the resolution has been posted in many places or discussed at Saturday Morning Coffee or Membership meetings. I will tell you though, that we will answer them no matter how redundant. However, we ask that you please check out the official TWHOA.net website because generally your answers are there. The TWHOA website is the Board’s official communication to you. We do not use Facebook, so we ask to please make it a habit to check out the website regularly and be the most informed person in the community.

Thank you, Your Board of Directors

JOIN US TODAY!!

How do I join? Online at fmo.org, or in the Clubhouse there are paper applications on the back wall, or call me and I will help. You may pay with a charge card or a check.

Residents like us have “people power.”

Thousands of residents who will stand ready to connect with our legislatures when bills come up that either help or hurt us. Together thousands of residents can make a difference.

Lou Dunning , President FMO District 7 Lee County 239-240-5847, loudunning2@gmail.com

We have lunch, cocktails, fun, and a social. Hope to see some new faces. If you have any questions, please call Barbara Roland at 681727-8467 or Janet Daly at 239-567-2285.

TARA WOODS SOUND & LIGHTING COMMITTEE

Regretfully, it has become necessary for Sound & Lighting to require an annual contribution from all groups and clubs wanting to use any audio/visual equipment. The last time a $50.00 contribution was collected from all the clubs was the 201011 season. After that, Sound & Lighting became self-supporting and asked only the four groups using the equipment on a regular basis to continue paying their annual contribution of $100.00. Those groups are the Entertainers, the New Image Chorus, Bingo and the Tara Woods HOA. They now contribute $150.00 annually. Sound & Lighting also did an annual fundraiser by bringing top quality entertainment to our stage for the residents to enjoy. For the first time, our last January “Vintage Vinyl” show fell several hundred dollars short of the funds needed to cover the cost. This lack of support is unfortunate because the sound system in the Clubhouse is worn out and needs constant repair. Hometown America has been promising to upgrade the systems for several years but has failed to make it happen. The proverbial straw happened at a recent play rehearsal during tech week when the sound mixer board failed. Therefore, until a new sound system is installed in the Clubhouse, all clubs and groups wanting to use microphones, the big screen, projector, laptop, spotlight, sound board, and/or theater lighting will have to contribute $100.00 annually beginning with the next season September through August. A single-use charge to use any small equipment will be $50.00, and production equipment will be $100.00 per event. Please make arrangements for next season with Polly Brown. Respectfully, Sound & Lighting Committee

TARA WOODS CERT WINS NFMFD AWARD FOR TOY DRIVE

At the annual NFMFD (North Fort Myers Fire District) CERT picnic, your TARA WOODS CERT team received the first award ever for its Christmas Toy Drive. While our TARA WOODS team is honored to receive this award, really it is a fitting tribute to all TARA WOODS residents who gave so generously to make it a happy holiday for North Fort Myers children that are in need. TARA WOODS residents gave 400 toys, and 15 bikes, that were distributed to 425 children. While many NFM CERT teams gave to this effort, TARA WOODS residents have always been the leaders in the NFMFD Toy drive, going back to Jack Boylan’s days as the Bike Man. Your TARA WOODS CERT team salutes all of you for your heart-warming generosity!

“A REASON TO SMILE”

Tara Woods is home to four family members – a mother and her three daughters. It really is a “family affair.” Jo Bonner (also known as “Jo Jo”) moved to Tara Woods a few months after Hurricane Ian destroyed her home in Indian Creek, where she had lived full time since 2020.

Within the last year all her children retired and decided to join Jo Jo here since she was having so much fun! Jo Jo – a youthful 94 – can be found playing

chair volleyball and various card games, and golfing twice a week. All are originally from northwest Ohio (near Toledo), and the girls are snowbirds.

Jo Jo lives on Darwin Street, Lot #515, and lived in Walbridge, Ohio for many years.

Kim & Jerome Laub are from Oregon, Ohio and live on Macon Circle, Lot #199. Kim retired from The (Toledo) Blade as an Editorial News Assistant/Staff Writer.

Kris & Dean Ackerman are from Gibsonburg, Ohio. They live on Pandora Circle, Lot #425. Kris retired from Bowling Green State University as an Executive Assistant to the President.

Karen & Larry Schneider live on Lot #462 Pandora Circle, and call Curtice, Ohio home. Karen retired from Owens-Corning as a Senior Human Resources Administrator.

Jo Jo has six grandchildren and six great-grandsons.

ENTERTAINING NEWS

So, Ladies and Gentlemen…

I must start with an apology to those who read the March issue of The Columns. Last month my article was one month too late. I guess I forgot that our play was on stage in February and NOT MARCH! My only excuse is... well, I really don’t have one!

Speaking about the performance. This was a challenging year, and our actors and crew did a great job. We entertained our audiences, and they seemed to enjoy all three shows. The nice thing about live theater, unless you come to more than one performance, the one you see is the one you remember. We like that.

Janet and I have already started to work on next year’s play and the cast will have received their scripts. I don’t believe that anyone who is not involved realizes how much time it takes to produce a show. Next year’s show will be a hilarious romp set in Sweetgum, Texas.

Be sure NOT to miss this one.

I hope everyone enjoys their summer, when things around here used to be calmer, but in the last few years it is almost as hectic as the winter months. But hey, we are retired, what else would we do with our time – watch reruns of Judge Judy or the Simpsons?

Lesley Krauss has graciously agreed to write this article for The Columns for the summer months. Thank you so much for this mini vacation. To my readers – I will speak with you in October. And to all, please enjoy Lesley’s articles. It is good to hear another voice.

“This killing people with kindness is taking way longer than I thought it would.”

Pat Dunning, Stage Manager & President of the Entertainers 239-240-5848 pdunning46@gmail.com

NEW IMAGE CHORUS

April is here, and, for me, it means quite a few things! The saddest thing for me, though, is that my time at Tara Woods has come to an end until the fall. This is always a sad time for me, and I will miss you all very much! However, I will continue with my article for the New Image Chorus so I can keep you up to date on everything going on with the New Image Chorus!

On March 29th, we presented a Vegas-style Show called The Nostalgia Show with Randy Riggle. Randy gave us a great show with his multi-media presentation! Thanks to everyone who came out to support us and enjoyed a good evening out!

Do you have a special talent? Are you a closet juggler? A dancer? Do you sing in the shower? Like to lip-sync and dance to Britney Spears? Tell jokes around the table on Saturday Morning Coffee? How about playing a musical instrument?? We are looking for TALENT. Any kind of talent… Our next big show will take place next year on Saturday, March 28th, 2026, and it’s going to be great! TARA WOODS GOT TALENT!! Now that our busy season is ending, it is the perfect time to start practicing for this fun event. We will be having auditions sometime in October when our snowbirds start

to fly back. Not going to be here until later –but would still like to participate? That’s ok; just let us know, and we’ll be in touch! I really can’t wait to see the talent that I know exists in our wonderful community!! We want to celebrate you!

As always, we are looking for new members for our Chorus. We practice on Mondays from 12:30 to 2:30 PM, and we would love to welcome you. Just come and try it out once! More details to come as to when the Chorus will begin again in the fall! Goodbye Tara Woods until October! I’m going to miss you!!

How Can You Boost Your Savings?

It might not be on your calendar, but America Saves Week is observed from April 7–11. Are you saving enough? If not, how can you save more? If you don’t think you’re saving enough, you’re not alone. Just 22% of Americans are completely satisfied with the amount of money they’ve saved, according to a recent Yahoo Finance/Marist Poll survey. And the same survey showed that a third of households couldn’t cover one month’s worth of bills if they lost a job or other source of income. What’s behind this savings gap? Several factors are involved, including the high cost of housing. But while you can’t control these external forces, you may be able to increase your savings by taking these steps:

• Create a budget — and stick with it. Following a budget is not everyone’s idea of fun, but it can be of great use in managing your spending, which, in turn, can help you save more. You can find many free budgeting apps that allow you to track your spending and place it into categories. Once you know where your money is going, you may find it easier to cut back in certain areas, such as possibly eliminating streaming services you don’t use much.

• Pay yourself first. Like everyone, you have a lot of bills to pay each month. But why not pay yourself first? Even if you can’t put away a lot of money, any amount will help. And you can make it easier on yourself by having some funds moved automatically each month from your checking or savings account into a liquid, low-risk account — one you don’t use for your everyday expenses. Over time, as your income goes up, you can increase the amounts in these automatic transfers.

• Take advantage of “cash-back” offers. You may already use a credit card that provides you with cash back on purchases. But did you know you can also download cash-back apps? Like cash-back credit cards, these apps give you a percentage of your spending back, helping you save money on many of your regular purchases, such as groceries and gas. You can even find apps that offer promotions that let you earn more at specific times or for buying certain items.

• Cut down — or consolidate — your debts. It’s easier said than done, but the more you can reduce your debts, the more money you’ll be able to save. You can choose to tackle the debt with the highest interest rate or get rid of the smallest debts first, but whichever method you choose, try to be as diligent as you can. You also might be able to consolidate your debts — but be careful, because not all debt consolidation offers will work in your favor.

• Get some help. Your employer may provide an employee assistance program that offers, among other benefits, credit counseling and other types of financial guidance. You may want to contact a financial professional who can take a holistic look at your situation and offer recommendations on saving, investing and goal setting.

It’s always important to save money — but it’s not always easy. However, by exploring every avenue available to you, you may be able to improve your saving skills to the point where they can make a real difference in your life.

Thank you for supporting us to win the Best of Cape Coral 2024.

If you have them, bring a noodle, stretch bands, and water weights. If questions, contact Judy Brda at 239-731-1797.

Come join us in this fun, non-competitive sport. Meet new/old friends, get a few laughs while exercising. No experience necessary. Hope to see you there. Any questions please contact Barb Simonson at 541-840-4430.

COMING NOVEMBER 6TH 6TH ANNUAL QUARTER AUCTION

To give everyone a heads up, we will be having our 6th Annual Quarter Auction on Thursday, November 6th.
