Island History Battle of Galveston
The Battle of Galveston was fought on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War, and was a significant engagement between Union and Confederate forces. The battle occurred in Galveston, Texas, which was a crucial Confederate port for trade, particularly in cotton, and it was vital for the Confederacy's economy and supply lines.
In late 1862, the Union had successfully captured Galveston in an effort to block Confederate trade routes and weaken the South's economy. However, the Union's hold on the city was precarious, and in December 1862, Confederate Major General John B. Magruder, who was responsible for the defense of Texas, devised a plan to retake the port. The Confederates launched a surprise attack on New Year’s Day 1863.
Magruder’s strategy combined a land assault with a naval offensive. Confederate forces first launched an attack on the Union positions on land, while a Confederate naval squadron, led by the steamer *Bayou City* under Captain Leon Smith, engaged the Union’s naval blockade. The Union’s naval forces, commanded by Captain William B. Renshaw, were stationed in the harbor and had blockaded the city in an attempt to choke off Confederate trade.
The Confederates had an advantage in the attack. The *Bayou City* rammed and disabled several Union vessels, and despite strong resistance on the part of the Union garrison under Colonel Nicholas S. Worth, the Confederates quickly overran the city. Union forces had little choice but to surrender or retreat, and they abandoned Galveston after suffering significant losses.
The Confederate victory at Galveston was crucial for maintaining control of one of their most important ports for the remainder of the war. It was also a significant morale booster for the Confederacy, particularly in Texas, where Confederate control was

increasingly being threatened by Union advances. For the Union, the defeat led to a rethinking of strategy in the region, as it became clear that the Confederacy would continue to contest control of key ports along the Gulf Coast.
In the aftermath, the Confederacy was able to use Galveston for the transportation of goods and supplies, bolstering their war effort. The Union’s inability to hold the port for long further entrenched the importance of the blockade as a key component of their strategy to weaken the Confederacy. The battle itself, while tactically important, was a setback for Union efforts to close off Southern ports, and it underscored the difficulty of executing successful blockades in the face of determined Confederate resistance.

Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in nails?
A. My husband! I was an every 2 week in the salon girly and when Covid happened, obviously everything was shut down and he encouraged me to do my own. He bought me everything I needed to get me going—lots of learning and lessons—and things only grew from there.
Q. How do you stay updated with trends and incorporate them into your designs while maintaining your unique style?
A. Definitely social media. Instagram has a new trend every week, I think! For the most part, I’m always brought inspiration photos, but there’s always a change that allows it to be one of MY sets.
Q. What’s the most challenging nail design you’ve ever created, and how did you bring it to life
A. To be honest, I think it was the “cake” nails I did on my bestie for her birthday this year. It’s achieved by using a sculpting gel and I had to improvise quite a bit with what I had, but I did it! And she loved them.
Q. If you could create a nail design inspired by any movie, song, or celebrity, what would it be, and why?
A. This is a good one! I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan. I think the one movie I’d love to make nails for is Howls Moving Castle, and specifically the scene where Howl is in his room after his breakdown. So many colors! It would look amazing.
minds.
