Meet Melissa Marshall, where twenty years ago she embarked on a journey that would shape her life in ways she never expected. What started as a job has grown into an art, a skill, and a passion. After all these years, bartending became so much more than mixing drinks—it’s about creating experiences, connecting with people, and navigating the highs and lows of the job with a dose of humor.
Q: What’s the most rewarding part of bartending for you?
A
There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of crafting a drink for someone who has no idea what they want. When a guest walks in and simply says, “Make me something,” it’s my chance to really shine. I start by asking about their preference in liquor and then let my creativity take over. The moment they take their first sip and their eyes light up, I know I’ve done my job right.
Q: Whats the most challenging part of working in the industry, and how do you overcome it?
A:
The schedule. Long nights and early mornings can be exhausting, and the missed holidays, birthdays, and family gatherings are a bittersweet part of the job. The nights blend into early mornings, and sleep becomes a rare luxury. But for those of us who love what we do, it’s a sacrifice that comes with the territory.Another challenge is handling difficult customers. Let’s be real, no bartender enjoys dealing with unruly customers. I’ve learned that sometimes the best solution is the most straightforward one. I keep it polite, but firm: if someone’s not going to respect the space or the people in it, I ask them to leave. It’s not about confrontation; it’s about maintaining the atmosphere that makes a good bar great.
Q: In your opinion, what makes a great bartender? Is it more about technical skill or personality?
A:
In my opinion, the most important quality a great bartender can have is personality. Yes, anyone can be taught to mix a drink, but not everyone can make a customer feel welcome and valued. The way you engage with a guest, the little jokes, the friendly banter are the things that create an atmosphere where people want to come back. People don’t just remember the drinks; they remember how they felt when they were served. And that’s where the true magic lies.
Q: What’s your favorite cocktail to make, and why?
A: The classic Bloody Mary. It’s not just a drink; it’s a canvas for creativity. I take pride in making what I think is a killer Bloody Mary, complete with my own homemade mix. It’s the drink that’s perfect for brunch, a hangover cure, or simply because someone wants something bold, spicy, and flavorful.
Meet Jade Turn from serving hesitant drinks at a bustling Sky Bar to crafting signature cocktails that people line up for, the journey of Jade's passion and creativity. What started as a nudge from a friend turned into a career that has become a defining part of her identity.
Q:
AHow did you get started in bartending? What specific moment made you pursue it?
I started bartending in 2014 at Sky Bar, thanks to a little push from my best friend, Katie, who practically had to convince me to try serving. Back then, I was incredibly shy and nervous—something that might surprise people now. I spent about a year as a server before transitioning to bartending, where I stayed for seven years. Making drinks came naturally to me because I was always the one mixing up creative cocktails for my friends and myself at home. It didn’t take long for bartending to become more than a job. I realized bartending was my true calling when regulars began seeking me out to make their drinks, even when I wasn’t officially behind the bar. They appreciated something unique about the way I mixed their favorites. The moment that really solidified it for me was when people started asking me to surprise them with whatever I wanted to make. They trusted me completely, knowing that whatever I crafted would be good. That’s when I knew I was in the right place.
Q:
How do you keep up with the evolving beverage scene?
A:
Social media is a huge source of inspiration for me. I follow bartenders from around the world on TikTok and other platforms, where I can see new trends, techniques, and innovative twists on classic cocktails. The creativity out there is endless, and there’s always someone coming up with the next big idea. It keeps me motivated to experiment and stay ahead of the curve, constantly finding fresh ways to elevate my craft.
Q: What’s the most creative drink you’ve ever made?
A:
One of my most creative cocktails is what I call the Cherry Bomb. It’s a vibrant mix of cherry-flavored vodka, maraschino liqueur, cherry juice, and pineapple juice, all topped with brut champagne. I love the way the sweetness of the cherry and pineapple balances with the dryness of the champagne. Whenever I’ve featured it on a menu, it’s always been a hit. It’s a drink that’s fun, bold, and never fails to leave an impression.
Q: Can you share a memorable story from behind the bar that stood out to you?
AChoosing just one memorable moment behind the bar is tough because there have been so many special nights. But if I had to pick, I’d say that bartending during the pub crawls on the Strand is always an unforgettable experience. The crowd is full of locals who are welcoming and full of energy, and there’s a sense of camaraderie that makes the night feel like one big celebration. Everyone shows up dressed festively, and it’s so much fun to be part of that party atmosphere. If I had to pick a favorite among them, Barcycle would be at the top of my list. The mix of excitement, familiar faces, and the contagious energy makes it an experience that I always look forward to.

In 1871, Galveston Island became home to the Tremont Opera House, the first true opera house in Texas, marking a significant cultural milestone. By the late 19th century, cities like Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio followed suit, establishing their own opera houses. These venues became vibrant hubs for musical and theatrical performances, showcasing opera alongside a variety of artistic entertainment, and laying the foundation for Texas’ rich performing arts tradition.
Established in 1891, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is the oldest medical school in Texas and a pioneering institution in healthcare education and innovation. As the state’s first medical school, UTMB has played a critical role in advancing medical research, training generations of healthcare professionals, and providing quality care to communities across Texas. Before the devastating 1900 storm, Galveston was a thriving economic powerhouse and the second richest city per capita in the United States. Dubbed the “Wall Street of the South,” the city was renowned for its booming banking industry and the success of The Strand, a vibrant commercial district. Galveston’s prosperity and influence made it a hub of trade, finance, and culture in the South, leaving a lasting legacy despite the challenges that followed.
Anthony “Bino” Garcia’s story is a rich testament to how a single individual’s passion can resonate throughout an entire community, shaping its culture and inspiring those around them. Bino’s journey in Galveston, where the waves of the Gulf blend seamlessly with the city’s historic charm, reflects a unique synergy of skateboarding and art—a connection that embodies both the freedom of skating and the creativity found in Galveston’s coastal atmosphere.
Bino’s early days on the skateboard were more than just fun; they were the foundation for a life dedicated to pushing boundaries and nurturing a shared love for the sport. With an innate drive and love for skating, he quickly became a fixture in Galveston’s skateboarding circles, creating a community of like-minded individuals who, under his influence, discovered the joy of the sport and the bonds that come with it. He wasn’t just skating for himself; he was fostering a movement, nurturing the next generation of skaters, and showing that skateboarding is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life that builds character and camaraderie.
As Bino evolved in his journey, he found a unique way to merge his artistic side with his passion for skateboarding. His innovative approach to recycling used skateboard decks into art pieces not only adds an eco-friendly element but also tells a story of transformation. Each piece he creates serves as a symbol of the resourcefulness and ingenuity that defines not just his art, but Galveston itself. Through this work, he bridges two realms—skateboarding and art—that might seem disparate but share the core value of self-expression.
Bino’s presence at Galveston’s Art Walk further amplifies his impact, offering a platform for his creations that resonate with both art lovers and the skateboarding community. His work stands as a reminder that creativity knows no bounds and that beauty can emerge from the most unexpected places.
Whether it’s through a hand-carved art piece or an unforgettable skateboarding trick, Bino’s work sends a clear message: art and passion are always intertwined, and community thrives when people are willing to invest in each other’s passions.
Anthony “Bino” Garcia is more than a local legend; through his dedication to skateboarding and his creative artistry, Bino has truly cemented his legacy in Galveston as not just an inspiration, but a cornerstone of its vibrant culture.
