A. I began braiding because I’ve always been flamboyant and in touch with my feminine side. Hair has fascinated me since childhood, and for as long as I can remember. Twists, braids, and ponytails have been my specialty.
Q. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING TO LEARN BRAIDING?
A. The advice I would give to future or beginner braiders is to “Practice, practice, practice!” Although it may sound cliché, once you master the rhythm, it will become much easier.
Q. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS A BRAIDER?
A. One of my biggest challenges as a braider is that nowadays, everyone seems to be braiding or focused on some aspect of cosmetology. Seeing thousands of local braiders can be discouraging, as I worry about maintaining my clientele. However, I recognize that competition can be necessary and beneficial.
Q. IF YOU COULD BRAID ANYONE’S HAIR, PAST OR PRESENT, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
A. If I could choose anyone’s hair to braid, it would unquestionably be Beyoncé. That choice is a no-brainer for me.
Q. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE BRAIDING TECHNIQUE OR STYLE?
A. My current favorite style is stitch straight-back braids with two buns and some leave-out curly hair. It’s quick, cute, and always looks great.
Q. WHAT DREW YOU TO A CAREER IN HAIRDRESSING?
A. I was sitting in nursing school with an espresso and thought I’d have way much more fun cutting hair so I went for cosmetology instead.
Q. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE HAIRCUT OR STYLE?
A. I have a special place in my heart for curly hair, I like men’s cuts and women’s long layers.
Q. WHAT PRODUCTS OR TOOLS DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR MAINTAINING COLORED HAIR?
A. For maintaining colored hair while keeping it vibrant and healthy, sulfate-free products are an excellent choice. Here are some highly recommended products and tools. Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner: These are sulfate-free and designed specifically for color-treated hair, providing moisture and protection. A wide-tooth comb: Ideal for detangling wet hair without causing breakage.
Q. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CLIENTS LOOKING TO CHANGE THEIR HAIR COLOR OR STYLE DRASTICALLY?
A. Be thoroughly prepared, and collect multiple reference images that show what you like and dislike. Schedule a consultation with your stylist to discuss styles and be open to professional advice.
Q. WHAT ARE COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WITH THEIR HAIR CARE AND STYLING AT HOME?
A. One common mistake people make with their at-home hair care and styling is using products that aren’t suited to their specific hair type or needs. For instance, using the wrong shampoo or conditioner can lead to issues like dryness, excess oil, or lack of shine.
Q. IF YOU COULD GIVE ANYONE IN HISTORY A HAIR MAKEOVER, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHAT STYLE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
A. Beyoncé when she had those bad bangs! I would have done curtain bangs and face framing.
