Meet Marc Laws, innovative owner of Shoes 2 Customz, a unique company dedicated to transforming ordinary footwear into a personalized work of art. With a keen eye for design and a passion for creativity, Marc has carved a niche in the market by offering customization services that allow customers to express their style through their shoes.
MARC LAWS
Q. How did you get into shoe customization?
A. Honestly, I am a sneakerhead. I’ve always kept up with the latest Jordan and Nike fashions. With that being said, before customization, it was cleanings and restorations. It’s crazy because one of my good friends Derrick Decker had that go in him to do the same thing. That was the push I needed to get started. We cleaned shoes and brought them back to life. It was so good people would pay us! Once that took off I made it a hobby and, I learned the craft. I started by practicing on older shoes I no longer wore. I turned those shoes into a vision I had. Not saying the shoe wasn’t live cause it was (s/o to the designer lol) but I wanted to put my own twist on it. I realized I could do more artistically than I thought and I went up from there.

Q. What inspires you and how do you stay motivated?
A. My biggest inspiration comes from my dad. My dad was an artist himself. Before he passed I wanted to do something to honor him and his passion for art. When life decided to take a turn, I used it as my platform. My motivation also comes from seeing him never give up. Life threw quite a few obstacles his way and he never let it stop him. When I’m in a tough spot I think about the determination he had to get through. That’s when I pick up that brush and get to work.
Q. What makes you stand apart from other artist?
A. I would have to go with the fact that I don’t only customize sneakers, I like to customize the boxes for the shoes as well. I would rather you get a full custom experience with your shoes.
Q. How long does it normally take for you to design a pair of shoes?
A. Typically 3-4 days, but it usually depends on the workload and or difficulty of the job.
Q. What’s your turn around? What’s your price range?
A. Typically about a week and I usually charge around $100-$150. However, it depends on the level of difficulty and materials needed.
Q. Do you apply any material (fabric, leather, etc.) on the shoes as well as painting? If not, is this something you would do later down the road?
A. I’ve started working with different fabrics recently. But it has been more of a process of learning my lane in that area of customization.
Q. How long have you been customizing shoes?
A. I’ve been painting shoes since 2014 off and on, but a few years ago, I realized I could make a career out of it.
Q. If you could collaborate with any brand, who would it be and why?
A. Personally! I would love to work with any brand that would like to collaborate. But if I had to pick one, I would go with the brand that I’ve been interested the longest, and that would be Air Jordan for sure.

How a summer’s day in Galveston became a day of hope!
Galveston is known for many things in Texas history. For example, being one of the wealthiest cities in Texas before the 1800s storm, the Native American history on the island, or even the famous Jean Lafitte. But this one moment in history on this humble island is the most revolutionary of them all. This is the story of how a simple day in June became celebrated throughout the US as a day of freedom, equality, and a step towards a brighter future for this young country.
April 12, 1861, was the start of what we now know as the bloodiest war in America. The Civil War was a war that tore families apart, each side fighting for something that they believed was right. The freedom of every individual in this country regardless of color or the forced labor of those some believed were less than a working mule. The Union and The Confederate. The war that put brother against brother, battles that wiped out 2% of the population at the time in almost exactly 4 years. Here in Galveston, The war and the subsequent changes following are more than just a piece of American history we teach our children. It is embedded in the seas and soil even today.
The Battle of Galveston was a bloody affair between the occupying Union forces and Confederate attackers, who fought for control of one of the major ports in the US. On the first of January 1863, two Confederate ships sailed from Houston to our harbor to battle against six of the Union ships. In the end, the odds were in the Confederate’s favor as the remaining two ships sent were successful in the recapturing of Galveston and its ports.
However, anyone who knows US history knows that the battle won in Galveston did not mean the victory of the war was the Confederates to claim. On the 9th of April 1965, Robert E. Lee surrendered the last threatening forces of the Confederates and the war ended. Though not everyone was forthcoming in that information and as such it took 71 days, on the 19th of June, for General Order #3 to be read aloud announcing that slavery was abolished and people of color were to be considered free, right here in Galveston, Texas.
Today June 19th, or Juneteenth, is a day of celebration with parades and festivals, and a testament to the lives lost in the fight for freedom. A fight many argue is still going on today. It serves as a reminder that we have the right to stand up for ourselves when confronted with challenges and that victory is within our grasp. Who would’ve thought that a day in June and an island in Texas would go down in history as a day of relief, happiness, and hope? GALVESTON,

TROPICAL TREATS
A small little place with a BIG BOLD TASTE! Galveston’s popular food shack is located at 4117 Ave. S. If you’re on vacation don’t miss out! If you’re a local, don’t miss out! Specifically known for Ms. Mae’s famous boudin balls stuffed with cheese in the center that will make you go bananas. It has the perfect crunch and crispiness with a side of ranch to dip into. They also now have a hot Cheeto boudin ball for all the hot Cheeto lovers! Don’t sleep on the boudin chicken quesadilla. This is my personal favorite that comes with a side of cheese to dip. You want to make sure to try the burgers as well. A flame broil patty with a side of crinkle fries. Make sure to add cheese to the fries for all my cheese lovers! The prices are great, the agua frescas are excellent and the frito pie hits the spot when you want a quick snack. This joint is family-owned and operated. Shawn is always cool as a fan working the front house while his mom is cooking it up! Make sure to give them a try!

Bartender a dynamic duo that makes
To the left we have Ana Silvas born and raised on this beautiful Island. Her journey to bartending started by serving drinks that other bartenders made. Then in 2017 after Tropical Storm Irma, her job at the time placed her behind the bar with no experience believing no one would come in due to all the flooding. Little did they know about 20 people popped in. She then tells everyone “I know how to drink a drink but not make one, you’ll get what ya ask for just be patient with me.” Everyone loved her and she’s been bartending ever since.
Meeting new people, seeing familiar faces, and hearing crazy stories are just a few reasons why she loves to bartend. If you ever need a cheap therapist she’s your girl! Make sure to ask for her famous strawberry lemonade. I won’t mention what ingredients are in it. It’s said to be dangerously delicious and a big hit, so come on by to try it yourself. You can find her at Market Station located at 2310 Market Street in downtown Galveston. Tell her Island Vibe Mag sent you!

To the right, we have none other than the well-known Victoria Lewis. Born in Laredo, Texas but has been bartending forever on the island! She’s been an island girl for over 23 years and the locals love them some Lewis! Victoria started as a door girl, who later became a bartender at the old Lucky Lounge! Her journey to bartending started because it helped her become less socially awkward and the money, money, monnnney!
She has a love-hate relationship behind the bar. But getting to meet so many people, learning lessons, hearing stories and jokes keeps her bartending. She has so many years in the industry that she has created too many drinks to keep count. One of my favorite experiences with Lewis was when she would ask random people who were sitting at her bar to pick an alcohol or mixer. By the time it was all said and done, she had probably 6 alcohols and 10 mixers in her shaker! There was a 50/50 chance the drink was either one hell of a drink or unpleasant! I once heard there was a book where she kept all the drinks written down that were created through games. Its unknown whereabouts are a mystery to all. Everyone was drunk so the book never had a chance to survive in anyone’s hands!
If you’re not a drinker Lewis is also known for her mocktails. Excellent for all the non-drinkers. Both bartenders care about your safety. T hey believe in hydrating and cutting you off when necessary even when you don’t like it, keep in mind they want to make sure you and others make it home safe!

LET’S EAT WITH VIDA AGAVE
The Birria Tacos are a delight! The tender, flavorful beef paired with warm, crispy tortillas creates a perfect texture. The consomé on the side adds an extra layer of richness and depth to each bite. With fresh garnishes like cilantro, onions, and lime, these tacos are an explosion of flavors. A must-try for any taco enthusiast!
If you’re in the mood for a flavorful explosion, try the Pastor Burger. Its tender pork is marinated to perfection with just the right balance of smokiness and spice that is topped with guacamole, grilled onions, and pepper jack cheese. Each component complements the other in a mouthwatering way.
An upgraded twist on a classic comfort food, the Chicharrón Trio Dip is a great appetizer to start with. Combining fresh and hot crispy pork rinds with a creamy, queso dip, their housemade salsa, and guacamole it offers a satisfying crunch and indulgent in different flavors in every bite. It’s the perfect appetizer for sharing with friends or enjoying as an individual treat.
