It’s Time to Follow the Sun
With the cooler months now well and truly upon us, thoughts of warm tropical sunshine are never too far away. And luckily for us, just a few hours’ flight time.
In our bumper Winter issue, we’re shining a light on Vanuatu - easily one of the most naturally spectacular places we cover. With endless opportunities for adventure and a warm, resilient community, it’s a destination that always leaves a lasting impression.
We also cover this year’s Fiji Tourism Exchange (FTE) and South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE), two key events on the regional tourism calendar. Travel is all about creating unforgettable experiences, but it’s the relationships behind the scenes that keep everything moving. Those connections were on full display at both events.
As always, we bring you updates from across the Pacific — including the return of New Caledonia.
It’s great to see travel getting back on track.
We hope you enjoy the read.

Vanuatu: A South Pacific Treasure
Vanuatu brings its own unique flavour to the South Pacific travel map.

The string of 83 islands offers up a colourful mix of raw natural beauty, rich cultural traditions, and warm island hospitality. From rugged peaks and lush jungles to vibrant coral reefs, this unspoiled paradise is made for explorers, beach bums, culture lovers, thrill-seekers, and anyone wanting to step outside the norm.
You might be chasing epic underwater adventures, craving a well-earned break from the busy life back home, or keen to connect with a living culture that goes back thousands of years – Vanuatu ticks every box, and then some.
What also sets Vanuatu apart is how genuine the experience feels. It’s because it is.
Vanuatu is not overrun or over-polished. And many of the best experiences – like exploring pristine marine areas, sampling local delicacies, diving into blue holes, or soaking up village life – are deeply rooted in sustainability, local knowledge, and community.
If you're here for a few days or lucky enough to be staying longer, Vanuatu offers something real, raw, and unforgettable.
Active Adventures: Land, Sea & Everything In Between
Many visitors don’t realise just how much there is to do in Vanuatu. From world-class diving and big-game fishing to tropical golf courses and mountain biking through lush jungle, this island nation packs a surprising punch. Whether you're chasing thrills or just keen to try something new, there’s an adventure waiting around every corner.
Every Cast Tells a Story
With its warm, nutrient-rich waters, Vanuatu is a genuine angler's paradise. Whether you’re a seasoned fisho with a taste for a trophy catch or just keen for a fun day on the water, Vanuatu delivers the goods. Offshore, the action soon gets serious. The deep blue around Vanuatu is home to some of the ocean’s most prized species, including Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Dogtooth Tuna, to name a few. Hooking one of these powerhouses is no easy feat, but that’s half the thrill. Whether it’s the raw muscle of a Dogtooth or the airborne acrobatics of a Sailfish, each catch is its own wild story.
For those wanting to head out, operators like Nambas Fishing Charters in Port Vila offer game fishing experiences with all the bells and whistles. Their boats are custom-built for the job, crewed by experts who know these waters like the back of their hand.
Prices are generally:
Half-Day Charter (5 hours): Around NZD $1,550
Full-Day Charter (8 hours): Around NZD $2,100
That typically includes all gear, bait, refreshments, and a knowledgeable crew. On a full-day trip, you’ll also get lunch sorted. Multi-day liveaboard trips are also available – a great option for hardcore anglers.

Tee Off in the Tropics
Golf might not spring to mind when you think of Vanuatu, but maybe it should. Tucked amongst its dramatic landscapes, Vanuatu quietly serves up some fun golf experiences. It’s the kind of pleasant surprise that makes you wonder why you didn’t pack your clubs sooner.
Just outside Port Vila, the Port Vila Golf & Country Club is the star of the show. This 18-hole, Par 72 course stretches out to just under 6,000 metres and plays host to the annual Vanuatu Golf Open, attracting players from across the Pacific. Flat, scenic, and sneakily challenging, it’s as enjoyable for hackers as it is for serious players.
Up on Santo, the Santo Golf and Country Club offers a 9-hole course with alternate tees for a full 18-hole round. The views here are something else – lush fairways set right by the ocean.
Two Port Vila resorts also serve up golf on your doorstep. Warwick Le Lagon has a 13-hole course with fresh greens and hire gear, while the Holiday Inn Resort has a 9-hole layout where you might need to dodge the odd coconut, or at least stop to take in the lagoon views. Note: the Holiday Inn is currently closed.
Pedal Power With a View
If you like your adventures with a bit of sweat and a good splash of scenery, mountain biking in Vanuatu ticks both boxes. You’ll weave your way through all jungle trails and hidden villages, enjoy coastal views, and see the occasional goat on the track. It’s an up-close, two-wheeled way to really get to know the islands.
Port Vila-based Vanuatu Ecotours runs guided rides that take you well off the beaten track. Routes are tailored for different fitness and experience levels, so there's something for everyone. Best of all, rides usually end at a beach - the perfect way to cool off post-ride.
Standout tracks include the Efate Coastal Loop - known for its epic ocean views. The Tanna Island Circuit will have you cycling through dramatic volcanic landscapes and traditional communities. Just outside Port Vila, Club Hippique offers 600 acres of bike trails winding through coconut groves, rainforests, and down to sandy beaches. It’s part ride, part jungle safari.
Resilience and Recovery
As you know, in December 2024, a powerful quake shook Port Vila, causing significant damage to the local area. But, as always, the people of Vanuatu responded with heart, determination, and togetherness.
Fast forward to mid-2025, and Port Vila is well on the mend. Roads are open, businesses are back up and running, and essential services — power, water, and phone coverage — have been fully restored. Eateries, markets, and tour operators are once again welcoming visitors, some from new locations around town. Around 80% of tourism operators are now fully operational.
A major milestone in the recovery is the return of cruise ships.
Port Vila will welcome its first cruise ship in early August, with a new temporary wharf constructed at the seafront to receive tender boats. Ships also continue to call at destinations like Mystery Island and Santo.
Tanna and Santo were unaffected by the quake, and it is business as usual there. Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila remains fully open, ensuring easy access for international visitors.
Now is a great time to visit Vanuatu - and your visit helps communities continue to thrive and rebuild.

Bites Off the Beaten Track
Vanuatu isn’t just about tropical beaches and turquoise lagoons. It’s also a melting pot of culture, shaped by deep Ni-Vanuatu traditions and the influences of colonial French and British rule, plus a splash of Portuguese, Chinese and other global threads! And you can taste that rich cultural fusion everywhere - if you know where to look. And here are a few flavour-packed ways to explore beyond the regular restaurant scene.
Gaston Chocolat Factory: Sweet Treats
Step into the Gaston Chocolat factory and you’ll be hit with the rich smell of proper chocolate. Made with Vanuatu-grown cacao, this bean-to-bar treat is crafted with care and strong ties to local farmers. Founder Olivier Fernandez works closely with growers on the outer islands, overseeing the process from harvest to final product. While their Port Vila café is still being rebuilt after the recent earthquake, the factory is open—and a tasting room is on the way. This is chocolate made with heart. And yes, you’ll want to take a few bars home.
Kumul Highway, Tagabe, Port Vila (opposite Fung Kuei and next to Etam) About a 10‑minute drive from Port Vila.

Papaya Loco Cooking School
If you enjoy getting hands-on in the kitchen, Papaya Loco is a mustvisit. Chef Marcus runs this beachside cooking school, blending his Portuguese background with recipes and techniques he’s learned from local Ni-Vanuatu mamas. You’ll learn to make dishes like Simboro or Tuluk, then sit down at the outdoor table to enjoy what you’ve made— with a glass of wine and the sea right there beside you. It’s relaxed, fun, and full of flavour.
Papaya Vila, Eton. Head east along the Kumul Highway, about a 40‑minute drive from Port Vila.

Tanna Coffee: A Proper Island Brew
For a great coffee and a good story, head to Tanna Coffee. Their 100% Arabica beans are grown on the volcanic slopes of Tanna Island and roasted in Port Vila at a bright little café set inside a restored church. Take a tour and follow the journey from green bean to flat white, while learning about the local farmers behind each cup. And yes, the coffee’s as good as it smells.
Devil’s Point Road (also known as Mele Road), Mele Beach. About a 15‑minute drive from Port Vila town.

83 Islands Distillery: Sips with a Story
If you’re into rum, don’t miss a tour of 83 Islands. Their small-batch spirits are made using locally grown sugarcane, with help from more than 150 small-scale farmers. You’ll check out the old cane crushers, copper stills, and then finish with a tasting flight at the bar. Flavours include pineapple, coffee, cucumber and citrus—all sourced right here on the island. A proper local drop, with a great backstory.
1276 Stella Mare, Port Vila. From central Port Vila, follow Lini Highway east. About a 10‑minute drive from Port Vila.

Fresh Finds at Local Markets
While Port Vila’s main market is still being rebuilt, you’ll find plenty of smaller roadside stalls dotted around the island. They’re packed with fresh coconuts, pawpaw, bananas, greens, and root veg - perfect for a simple meal or snack. It’s also a great way to see what local life looks like, one basket at a time!
Efate: The Gateway to Vanuatu
Most travellers kick off their Vanuatu adventure on Efate. Just a quick drive from the airport to Port Vila, a lively harbourside city with views across to Iririki and Ifira islands. While reconstruction of the city centre remains in full swing, there is still plenty to see and do in and around the local area.
Out of town, you’ll find the Blue Lagoon - a spring-fed swimming spot with crystal-clear water - and the stunning Mele Cascades, where a 35-metre waterfall rewards a short jungle walk. For beach lovers, Eton Beach and Havannah Harbour serve up white sand and calm, turquoise waters.
Efate’s underwater world is first-class too. Dive the Konanda wreck, explore The Cathedral’s sunlit cavern, or snorkel at Hideaway Island, home to the world’s only underwater post office.
Back on land, explore local markets, visit Ekasup Cultural Village, or tee off by the sea. You can also kayak, e-bike, or hike through villages and lush trails.
Efate is easy to explore and full of variety - perfect for first-timers, families, or anyone keen to dive into island life at their own pace.

Tanna: Fire and Culture Collide
Down in Vanuatu’s south, Tanna is raw, rugged, and unforgettable. Just a 35-minute flight from Port Vila, it feels like stepping into another world— where ancient rainforests meet black sand beaches, and deep-rooted Kastom culture shapes daily life.
The island’s beating heart is Mount Yasur, one of the world’s most accessible active volcanoes. As night falls, you can stand right on the crater’s edge and watch lava explode into the sky—an awe-inspiring, nofilters-needed experience.
Tanna also offers rare cultural encounters. In traditional villages like Yakel, locals still live by ancient customs, wearing traditional dress and sharing stories through dance and ceremony. Visitors are warmly welcomed—but respect is key: ask before taking photos and bring a small gift if you can.
Beyond the volcano and culture, Tanna’s wild side shines. Soak in Sulphur Bay’s hot springs, dive into jungle waterfalls, or swim into the glowing Blue Cave.
Tanna: 5 Nights of Volcanoes, Culture & Wild Beauty
Day 1 – Markets & a Mighty Banyan
Arrive in Tanna and cruise to Lenakel in the back of a local truck—lush views all the way. Sip fresh coconut at the market before settling into your beachfront bungalow. In the arvo, explore the island’s colossal banyan tree (bigger than a rugby field!) with a local guide, then enjoy dinner by the sea.
Day 2 – Coffee & Caverns
Visit a family-run coffee farm for a tour, a brew, and cracking valley views. Later, take a boat to the magical Blue Cave—swim through a narrow gap and enter a glowing blue cavern. Pure island magic, with dolphins often tagging along for the ride.
Day 3 – Volcano Trek & Treehouse Stay
Head east to your next digs—a treehouse perched in a giant banyan. That afternoon, hike across the Ash Plains to Mount Yasur’s crater. Pass villages and jungle trails before arriving at the lunar-like summit. Feel the earth shake, smell the sulphur, and watch lava light up the night sky.
Day 4 – Hot Springs & Cultural Connection
Soak in Sulphur Bay’s steamy springs, then visit a nearby village to learn about local life—kava-making, weaving, and ancestral stories. On Friday

Santo: Blue Holes and Untold Histories
Espiritu Santo - known simply as Santo - is Vanuatu’s largest island and a true all-rounder. From jungle-covered interiors and vibrant blue holes to world-famous dive sites and picture-perfect beaches, it’s packed with variety.
Just a 45-minute flight from Port Vila, Santo is a diver’s dream, home to the SS President Coolidge, one of the world’s top wreck dives. Nearby Million Dollar Point adds history to the mix, with WWII-era machinery scattered across the seabed - easy to access, and teeming with marine life.
But you don’t need to dive to fall in love with Santo. The island’s blue holes - like Nanda, Riri, and Matevulu - are natural spring-fed pools with dazzling, crystal-clear water, perfect for a swim or paddle. On the coast, Champagne Beach and quieter Lonnoc Beach offer white sand, turquoise water, and true island bliss.
For land-based adventure, the Millennium Cave tour is a standout: a fullday jungle trek involving hiking, caving, and canyon swims. For something more relaxed, explore coconut plantations, hidden waterfalls, and villages offering a glimpse into everyday island life.
Santo Escape: 6 Nights of Culture, Coastlines & Crystal Waters
Day 1 – Arrival & Island Vibes
Touch down in Santo and settle into your beachfront stay. Ease in with a swim, a stroll, or a cold drink as the sun sets.
Day 2 – Markets & Wartime
Tales
Start with a wander through Luganville’s colourful market. Then dive into history at the WWII Museum and join a heritage tour where local guides bring Santo’s wartime past to life.
Day
3
– Champagne Beach & Port Olry
Spend the day exploring the coast. Champagne Beach delivers postcardperfect sands, while Port Olry serves up seafood feasts like coconut crab, in a dreamy beachfront setting.

Day 4 – Dive Wrecks or Snorkel Reefs

Port Vila on a Plate
If you’re heading to Vanuatu, be sure to bring your appetite. You’re in for a treat — and Port Vila is a great place to start the journey. Whether you’re after fresh island flavours, a bit of Euro flair, or something totally unique, the capital dishes up some seriously good food. Here are four spots well worth checking out.
Lalala Restaurant and Bar
Vanuatu has a strong French influence, and you’ll feel it the moment you walk into Lalala. Right on the water, it’s all whitewashed walls, bright blue shutters, and rustic wooden tables — the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve accidentally landed in the South of France, or maybe the Greek Islands. The menu leans Mediterranean too — pasta bowls, oysters, tuna carpaccio — best enjoyed with a glass of rosé and nowhere to be in a hurry. You’ll find it hard to leave.

Trust the Chef at Mangoes Resort & Restaurant
Mangoes Resort & Restaurant has long held a reputation as one of Vanuatu’s best places to dine, and with their Trust the Chef Dining Experience, they continue to set the standard. Originally from Cape Town, the chef has worked in some top kitchens, but it’s the local Vanuatu ingredients that really inspire him. Now he’s serving up creative fourcourse ‘trust the chef’ dinners that change with what’s fresh — think seafood, top-notch beef, and bold, clever flavours. It’s popular, so book ahead if possible.

Stonegrill Restaurant & Lounge Bar
Looking for something a bit different? Stonegrill’s got you covered. You cook your own meal on a piping hot volcanic stone — fun, tasty, and perfect if you like your steak just so. They use fresh local produce (the Santo Organic Beef is amazing), and the harbour views are pretty hard to beat too. Add in a few cocktails and some live music and you’ve got yourself a top night out.

Regenerative Vanua
This place is more than just a restaurant — it’s part of a bigger mission to bring traditional island food and local knowledge back to the table. Chef Leo Vusilai is at the helm, turning out beautiful, honest dishes made with fresh local produce from small growers and sustainable farms. Everything’s cooked with heart, and it’s hands down one of the best ways to taste real-deal Vanuatu flavours.

Wrecks, Reefs and Rays
Divers were among the first travellers to fall for Vanuatu - and it’s easy to see why. With warm, clear waters, spectacular coral reefs and world-famous wrecks, this island nation has long been a magnet for underwater adventurers. Whether you're new to diving or logging your hundredth dive, Vanuatu serves up unforgettable experiences — both natural and historic.
The SS President Coolidge, just off Santo, is a star attraction. Once a luxury liner and then a WWII troopship, it now rests on its side and offers around 50 dive routes. It’s one of the world’s best wreck dives, with highlights like The Lady porcelain panel still perfectly preserved. Nearby, Million Dollar Point is equally fascinating — a surreal underwater scrapyard of US military gear dumped after the war, now covered in soft corals and teeming with fish.
In Port Vila, there are more wrecks to explore. The Star of Russia, an 1874 sailing ship, sits at 33 metres with its hull largely intact. The Konanda, purpose-sunk for diving, is great for beginners and snorkellers alike. For something different, The Cathedral offers a magical cavern dive with light beams and hidden critters like nudibranchs and scorpionfish!
Natural reef dives are just as rewarding. Cindy’s Reef in Santo is full of tropical fish and turtles, while Kamitua Reef off Tanna features dramatic drop-offs, strong currents, and sightings of sharks, tuna and barracuda. If you're lucky, you might even spot a dugong grazing on seagrass.
Diving’s great all year round, with May to October bringing the clearest visibility. From November to March, warmer waters attract big ocean species like manta rays and whale sharks. Expect water temps between 21–27°C and visibility often over 50 metres.
There are excellent dive centres in Port Vila and Luganville (Santo), and resorts like White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa (Tanna) offer in-house dive operations. You’ll find courses from beginner to advanced PADI certification, with prices ranging from around NZ$220 to NZ$850, with gear hire averaging NZ$70.

South Pacific Tourism Exchange 2025
2,500+ Meetings. 61 Global Buyers. 79 Regional Sellers. One Clear Message:
Let’s Do Business.
by Fran McDermott
The South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) returned with purpose this year, and Islandtime was on the ground, covering two busy days over 9–10 May. Held at the newly opened Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa, this was the ninth edition of the B2B tourism event.
It brought together an impressive 79 sellers from across the Pacific and 61 international buyers representing 17 countries — Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, Germany, South Korea, India, and more. More than 2,500 meetings were pre-scheduled, and from where we sat, it looked like every minute was made to count.
For many operators, this was also their first major face-to-face event since the pandemic. And it showed. People were genuinely excited to reconnect with the market, share new developments, and hear what buyers are seeking in 2025 and beyond.
Keeping It Real
Beyond the raw numbers, there was a common thread of buyers actively looking for fresh, well-thought-out product — especially experiences that tell a genuine story, connect visitors to local culture, and go beyond
the surface. It wasn’t just about beds and beaches (although those are always welcome); it was about substance, sustainability, and sellability.
More specifically, there was a strong emphasis on:
• Eco-conscious product that minimises environmental impact
• Community-based experiences that give back and empower locals
• Cultural storytelling that adds authenticity and depth
• Smarter marketing that focuses on resilience and long-term growth
We had plenty of conversations where “sustainability” wasn’t just thrown in for the sake of it — it was at the very heart of the pitch. Buyers want to know how operators are walking the talk, and in many cases, Pacific suppliers are leading with the right balance of heart and business sense.

Regional Unity in Action
What also stood out this year was the collaborative thinking and doing. From tourism boards and boutique resorts to dive operators, cruise reps, and airlines — everyone was pulling in the same direction.
Fiji Airways, Solomon Airlines, and Nauru Airlines were all present and active — not just selling air seats, but helping to shape wider travel experiences through partnerships and packaging. It was a strong reminder that aviation is a core pillar for regional growth, especially when it’s linked to product development.
There was also a valuable media and industry briefing, where destinations spoke openly about current market conditions, recovery efforts, and future plans. Transparency and confidence were the themes of the day — something the trade truly appreciated.
From the Ground: What Buyers Want
We were also able to talk with several buyers across markets, and the consensus was clear: demand is shifting. Travellers are seeking longer stays, off-the-beaten-path destinations, and cultural depth. Countries like Vanuatu, Kiribati, New Caledonia, and Niue used the event to showcase exactly that — authenticity, readiness, and a clear sense of place.
For some destinations, SPTE was a chance to say, “We’re ready. We’ve updated. Let’s talk.” And for others, it was about building on existing partnerships and reintroducing the Pacific with a fresh lens.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
Walking away from SPTE 2025, it’s clear that significant progress is being made — not just in recovery, but in repositioning the Pacific as a high-value, sustainable, and collaborative tourism region.
The Pacific isn’t just open for business — it’s showing up with purpose. And for Islandtime, being there to see that unfold firsthand was a reminder of just how resilient and innovative our amazing region really is.

Stronger China-Pacific Tourism Ties on the Horizon
SPTE 2025 also provided an opportunity to grow ties with China’s outbound travel market. A special Chinese-Pacific Tourism Exchange session brought National Tourism Organisations together to boost collaboration, share insights, and explore ways to reach Chinese travellers.
One highlight was a proposal to launch a unified “Pacific Island Countries Tourism Alliance Brand,” designed to improve visibility and reduce marketing costs through joint campaigns targeting Chinese travellers.
This move signals a strong regional commitment to building capacity, deepening market insights, and positioning the Pacific as a desirable, sustainable destination for Chinese travellers.
Team Solomon Islands Takes Strides
Tourism Solomons made a strong statement at the 2025 South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE) in Fiji, leading a record 19-member delegation to boost the Solomons’ global profile and support the country’s tourism rebound. ‘Tourism Team Solo’ wasted no time, locking in over 40 meetings with travel wholesalers and agents, showing just how much interest there is in the destination.
The diverse crew included reps from Guadalcanal, Western Province, and Malaita, along with key operators like Solomon Airlines, Western Solomons Tourism, Travel Solomons, ecolodges, and top resorts.
Fiona Teama, Tourism Solomons’ Head of Sales & Marketing, highlighted the value of these trade events for reconnecting with key markets and building momentum after the COVID slowdown. SPTE’s regional focus gives the Solomons a prime spot to forge fresh partnerships and strengthen ties with the wider South Pacific tourism scene.
With international arrivals up 14.5% in the first quarter of 2025 — the best numbers since 2019 — Team Solo’s SPTE push is a clear sign the Solomon Islands is firmly back on the radar and ready to welcome the world.

Sustainability Front and Centre
SPTE 2025 shone a light on the Pacific’s deepening commitment to sustainable tourism, with destinations like Fiji, Samoa, and New Caledonia stepping up with fresh initiatives that balance growth with care - for culture, community, and the environment.
What was once a buzzword is now becoming standard practice. Highlights included ecocertification for locally owned stays, expanded work under the Pacific Ocean Litter Project to tackle single-use plastics, and new marine tourism guidelines to help safeguard fragile reef systems. Destinations also pushed ‘green season’ travel to ease peak pressure and offer richer off-season experiences.
Cultural stewardship stood out, too—with programs led by First Nations voices, ensuring Indigenous communities play a central role and see real benefits from tourism. The message was clear: the future of Pacific tourism is rooted in resilience, authenticity, and long-term impact.

Vanuatu Sends Signal: We’re Ready

Vanuatu also made a confident comeback at this year’s South Pacific Tourism Exchange (SPTE), with the Vanuatu Tourism Office leading an enthusiastic team of 11 operators ready to show the world what the destination has to offer. From top resorts and tour operators to the Vanuatu Travel Information Centre, Team Vanuatu was out in force — and making waves.
Over two action-packed days, they connected with key international buyers, sharing the message loud and clear: Vanuatu is open, welcoming, and ready for visitors, despite the curveballs nature’s thrown recently. A prize giveaway at the booth added a fun twist, challenging buyers on their Vanuatu know-how - from rich cultural traditions to hidden travel gems.
VTO CEO Adela Issachar Aru praised the swift recovery efforts following recent natural events, underscoring the country’s ability to deliver real-deal, island-style experiences across spots like Santo and Tanna.
Operators like Bountiful Tours, Whitegrass Resort, and Holiday Inn reported solid interest from both new and established markets, including Australia, Europe, and the US. With a growing global appetite for sustainable and off-the-beaten-track travel, Vanuatu’s authentic edge stood out. Their strong showing at SPTE is a clear signal: Vanuatu is rebuilding, reconnecting, and ready to grow its place on the tourism map.

Fiji Tourism Exchange 2025

Record Turnout, Big Ambitions, and a Confident Future for Fiji
by Fran McDermott
Fiji Tourism Exchange 2025 (FTE) opened with a clear message: the island nation is not only back on the world stage, but moving forward with purpose and supreme confidence. Hosted at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Denarau, this year’s event saw more than 550 delegates from 19 countries come together, including 138 international buyers, 84 local sellers, and 10 international media outlets. (It was another record-setting turnout for the South Pacific’s premier tourism trade event.)
Islandtime was on the ground to see first-hand the energy and optimism that ran through the many conversations, meetings, and presentations. From the lively opening ceremony to the final scheduled meetings, FTE 2025 served as a celebration of recent success and a strategic platform for the future.
Tourism Fiji CEO Brent Hill set the tone, highlighting a landmark achievement in 2024: over one million international visitor arrivals, including cruise and air travel — a first for the destination. “This milestone is more than just a number,” Hill said. “It represents jobs created, businesses strengthened, communities supported, and global hearts won over by the Fijian experience.”
While the scale of FTE was impressive - 4,300 pre-scheduled meetings took place over two days - it was the underlying strategy that also stood out. From Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) empowerment through Tourism Super Week to high-level discussions on market diversification, Fiji is building a tourism model that balances growth with sustainability and cultural authenticity.
The pre-FTE Tourism Super Week offered practical support to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, with training sessions and expert-led workshops aimed at lifting capacity across the tourism supply chain.
A highlight for media was the inaugural Consumer Media Marketplace. This event connected 20 local tourism operators directly with international journalists. Beyond the one-on-one meetings, the marketplace included panel discussions focused on what media are looking for in travel storytelling - providing real value to participants and sparking conversations around editorial trends and destination messaging.
Fiji’s future goals were also presented. Andre Viljoen, Chair of the Tourism Fiji Board and CEO of Fiji Airways, outlined the sector’s ambition to grow by an additional FJD $1 billion by 2027.
With Fiji Airways now a full member of the Oneworld Alliance, there’s a strong foundation for expanding global connectivity - markets like India were highlighted. Sustainability also remained front and centre. From government officials to global hotel brands, the commitment to lowimpact tourism was consistent.
Walking the show floor, what stood out wasn’t just the business being done - it was the warmth and authenticity behind it all. Fijian hospitality is well known, and at FTE 2025, it was felt across the board.
As another busy week wrapped up, FTE 2025 had done more than bring the industry together. It had delivered a confident and clear message: Fiji is setting the pace for tourism in the Pacific.

Hilton ‘Sip Society’ IslandInspired Cocktails
It’s hard to beat a yummy cocktail when you’re kicking back poolside in Fiji. And if you’re staying at Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa, you’ll definitely be in for a treat. Earlier this year, the resort introduced Sip Society, part of a global initiative celebrating the creativity of Hilton’s bartenders through curated cocktail experiences and exclusive events.
Hilton Fiji has put its own local twist on things with a variety of creations — including the Spicy Po’oi Margarita, which is served at the adults-only Koro Bar. Created by F&B Masters Bartender Zach Whippy, the cocktail is a bold twist on a traditional Rotuman dessert, blending mango, coconut rum, spice, and tequila into a drink that captures the essence of the islands with a fiery kick! I had the pleasure of tasting it for myself on a recent stay — and I can confirm, it’s every bit as delicious as it sounds.

Perfect for families, couples, or spontaneous day-trippers, Ride & Slide offers the ideal splash of sea, sun, and smiles — all in just a few hours.

From Paris to Paradise: A Sweet Collaboration
There’s dessert. And then there’s this. When renowned French chocolatier Thomas Alphonsine arrived at Tokoriki Island Resort, something truly special was in the making. Partnering with Tokoriki’s talented pastry team, Chef Orisi and his crew, Alphonsine brought a touch of Parisian finesse to the island, crafting a signature dessert that’s as beautiful as it is indulgent.
Featuring South Seas Salt’s vanilla bean sea salt and edible flowers from Herbivore Farms Fiji, it’s a dish that captures the essence of Tokoriki, refined yet rooted in local flavour. Known for his nostalgic, texture-rich creations, Alphonsine’s added a new layer to Tokoriki’s culinary story. And let’s be honest — when your island escape includes a world-class chocolate moment under the stars, you know you’re in the right place!

VOMO ISLAND RESORT

The Height of Luxury Meets Fijian Soul
by Fran McDermott
Some places just know how to do luxury, and Vomo Island Resort is one of them. Just a short hop from Nadi, but a world away in feel, this private island is a long-time favourite with Kiwi travellers who like their five-star experience with heartfelt local charm.
Room to Breathe, Space to Connect
When it comes to accommodation options, Vomo has provided guests with a range of options, from one bedroom hillside villas to grand beach house residences fit for Hollywood A-list stars.
And now, with the opening of their brand-new Two-Bedroom Family Pool Villas, Vomo’s taken things up a notch - delivering more space, more comfort, and that effortless island style that’s become its calling card.
Ideal for families, groups of mates, or anyone who likes to stretch out a bit, these new villas are big on both comfort and character. Inside, there’s a cool, calming vibe - think light timber, soft neutrals, and huge windows that let the island light flood in.
The 87m² interior is anchored by a king-sized master suite and a second bedroom with custom-built bunks (a third bed can be added if need be), plus two stylish bathrooms and an outdoor bath and shower for those under-the-stars (or sun) moments.
Outside, the living just gets better. The generous 71m² deck is set up for lazy lounging, poolside chats, and long, relaxed dinners.
There’s a private plunge pool for the grown-ups and a shallow splash zone for the kids - so everyone’s sorted, whatever pace they’re running at.
Service from the Heart
But the real magic of Vomo? It’s the people. From the moment you arrive barefoot on the sand, staff greet you like an old friend. They remember your name, your go-to coffee order, and somehow always know when it’s time for that sunset G&T. It’s the kind of intuitive, downto-earth service that makes you feel special.
Each villa comes with its own dedicated Vomo butler - basically your holiday genie! Ours organised everything from snorkelling sessions to fresh coconuts on the deck. It’s that mix of thoughtful detail and genuine warmth that keeps Kiwis coming back.

Harmonies from Heaven
And then there’s the music - something truly special at Vomo. Most evenings, just as the sky starts turning gold, the resident Fijian singers gather with guitars in hand and voices that stop you in your tracks. Their harmonies are rich, warm, and full of soul - the kind that makes your drink taste better and your shoulders relax a little more!
If you mention a favourite tune - an old classic, something from homethey’ll quietly learn it, rehearse it, and one night, there it is, sung just for you under the stars. No big announcement. Just a moment to carry home with you.
Let Island Life Take Over
The villas are designed to make life easy. There’s a handy kitchenette, coffee station, Bose Bluetooth speaker, and comfy indoor lounge space. You’ve got air con and fans for balmy nights, and the beach is literally a few steps from your door.
The Kids Village is close by too, with daily activities that’ll keep little ones entertained while you slip off to The Rocks, Vomo’s adults-only bar and pool. With non-motorised water sports, guided hikes, snorkelling trips and gourmet dining all part of the package, you can do as much - or as little - as you like.
Spend a lazy afternoon drifting in kayaks around the reef, followed by sunset cocktails and freshly grilled seafood at The Rocks. Then wander back to your villa barefoot in the moonlight - it will hit you - Vomo doesn’t just do luxury. It gets under your skin in the best possible way.
Sustainability That’s More Than Just Lip Service
Vomo’s not just a pretty face, either. The resort walks the talk on sustainability, with reef conservation efforts, solar energy, locally sourced ingredients, and deep connections with nearby communities. For those who care about the kind of footprint you leave behind, it’s good to know that this slice of paradise is being looked after properly.
Final Word
Vomo is stylish without being showy, friendly without being overbearing, and luxurious in a way that feels relaxed and real. The new Two-Bedroom Family Pool Villas are the latest reason to visit - but honestly, it’s the whole package that makes it unforgettable.

SHERATON TOKORIKI ISLAND RESORT
Find Your Fiji Flow
by Fran McDermott
If you’re after that perfect mix of sunshine, serenity and an added splash of adventure, Sheraton Tokoriki Island Resort in Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands delivers all that and more.

Surrounded by turquoise water and swaying palms, this dreamy island retreat is all about switching off, soaking up the Fiji vibe, and treating yourself – think epic snorkelling, blissful spa treatments, fresh island flavours and a cheeky cocktail or two by the pool.
An easy ferry ride or scenic seaplane or helicopter hop from the mainland, Sheraton Tokoriki feels a world away. Step onto the island and time slows right down, your togs become your daily uniform, and every sunset looks like something off a postcard.
Maybe you’re planning a romantic getaway, celebrating something special, or just overdue for a proper breather – whatever brings you here, you’ll find that everything flows a bit easier on island time.
Island Cuisine: From Sunrise to Starry Nights
Sheraton Tokoriki makes meals part of the adventure too. Mornings kick off at Waitui House, the resort’s main restaurant. You can graze on fresh fruit and pastries, or go all-in with eggs any style. Later on, the menu shifts to light bites and yummy mains, with fresh local seafood being a speciality.
In between swims, you can’t beat a lazy hour (or two) at the Sala Lounge & Pool Bar. It’s a go-to for daytime snacks and frozen cocktails – ideal after a salty dip or just before a sunset stroll. The fish tacos were a standout, best paired with a chilled local beer.
When evening rolls around, Curcuma is a top spot. Indian-fusion dishes are the star here. It’s tough to single out one dish, but their coconut prawn curry is a good place to start – and best enjoyed with a tropical cocktail.
For something a bit different, Tokoriki Coco Palms offers a proper cultural evening. You’ve got the traditional lovo feast – cooked in an underground oven – plus live meke performances and a kava ceremony that brings everyone together. The singing hits you in the heart every time.
Pure Bliss at Tokoriki Retreat Spa
In need of some serious pampering? Tucked away near Hidden Beach, the Tokoriki Retreat Spa is a genuine sanctuary. The moment you step into one of the private treatment bures, with their volcanic stone walls and rainforest showers, you can feel the weight of the world disappear.
A full-body massage will have you melting into the massage table, plus they offer a range of facials, body scrubs and other blissful treatments. It’s peaceful, beautifully designed, and totally in sync with the island’s natural rhythm.
Make a Splash: Snorkelling and More
The reef around Tokoriki is alive with colour, movement and surprises. You can take a guided snorkelling trip and spend a couple of hours drifting over coral gardens, spotting giant clams and schools of fish along the way.
If snorkelling’s not your thing, you’ve still got plenty of options. Kayaks, paddleboards and Hobie Cats are all available for guests, and they’re a great way to get out on the water. Early morning is a great time to get out – in most cases there will be barely a ripple on the ocean.
Stir Things Up: Tropical Cocktails, DIY Style
One of the resort’s Signature Experiences is the Cocktail Masterclass –and it ended up being one of our unexpected highlights. We signed up on a whim and had an absolute blast learning how to shake, stir, and sip our way through a few tropical favourites.
The bartender showed us how to balance the flavours, and before long we were garnishing our own creations like pros (well, semi-pros). My piña colada still needs work – but it was a laugh, and we got to toast our efforts at the end.
The Kind of Getaway You’ll Remember
Some places you visit and forget. Others stick with you – and Sheraton Tokoriki is definitely the latter. Maybe it’s the friendly staff who remembered our names by day two, the sunset swims, or that feeling of pure relaxation you only get on an island.
We spent our final evening with a couple of drinks at the pool bar, watching the sky turn every shade of orange and pink. No plans, no rush – just soaking it all in, and wishing we didn’t have to go home.

The Soul of the Islands:
Where Travellers Meet the Makers

In American Samoa, culture doesn’t sit behind glass or hang on gallery walls - it lives, breathes, and works. For travellers, this is an invitation to step inside the real story of the islands. Across the islands, artisans carry forward skills passed down through generations. Their hands don’t just shape materials, they shape meaning. And for visitors, these makers offer something extraordinary: the chance to learn, observe, and connect with culture that’s not curated for tourists, but created for community.
Siapo — The Language of Bark and Dye
Step into a siapo workshop and you’re not just watching art being made, you’re watching stories being spoken, without a single word. It’s not just decoration, it’s a visual language, rich with meaning. Travellers can join local workshops or visit community art centres where artists will welcome you. These are not performances, but real exchanges. You’ll leave not just with a new skill or souvenir, but with deeper cultural understanding.

Elei — Where Tradition Meets Trend
The sound of a brush dipping in dye, the steady press of carved wooden blocks or stencils, the repetition of patterns passed down through time, this is elei in action. While the technique is ancient, the designs are alive with fresh flair. Today’s textile printers are blending heritage with style, turning pieces of cloth into wearables that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a story.

Coconut Leaves and Clever Hands
You might think a coconut leaf is just a leaf — until you see what someone skilled can do with it. Woven hats, bowls, and even wall décor spring to life with surprising precision and purpose. These aren’t souvenirs for your shelf — they’re made to be worn, used, and celebrated. What’s more, many of these creators balance tradition with a passion for sustainability, weaving by day and working in conservation by — well, also by day (island life doesn’t sleep).

Want to Meet These Artisans?
You won’t need a guidebook. They’re out there: at markets, under fale Samoa, in school workshops, and on the front porches of quiet villages. So skip the gift shop. Instead, take a detour into a village, chat with the elders, roll up your sleeves at a weaving table, or book a hands-on session through your fale or eco-lodge. If you do, you’ll carry a piece of the islands with you — in your heart and in your hands.

Te Mana o Te Moana, set up back in 2004, is a French Polynesian environmental group focused on looking after the marine environment and local wildlife, especially sea turtles.
The project teams up with partner organisations to bring native plants back to motu shorelines – on Onetahi and Honuea, both important turtle nesting beaches. It includes a restoration plan, an education and awareness programme, and nature-based ways to handle climate challenges. So far, planting has been completed at four sites, and they’re now monitoring the growth of the newly introduced plants. Month of Lei: Bringing the Spirit of Hawai‘i to Life
Hawai‘i is a destination that never stops surprising. Each island has its own unique character, and within each one lies a long list of experiences just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. It’s also a destination that keeps evolving too, with new attractions and activities popping up all the time. For the travel trade, that means there’s a lot to stay on top of! Which is where Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania’s Month of Lei Destination Training Sessions came in. Held in early May in Christchurch, Parramatta, Manly, Canberra, and Auckland, the sessions were purposely designed to be longer than the quickmeeting format of Aloha Down Under Roadshow.
“With Month of Lei, we wanted to give each island more space to share their stories and really dive into what makes Hawai‘i so special,” said Darragh Walshe from Hawai‘i Tourism Oceania. And indeed they did.
Bringing the islands to life with their energy and enthusiasm were Deanna Isbister, Director of Sales for the Island of Hawai‘i (Big Island); Karishma Chowfin, Director of Sales for the O‘ahu Visitors Bureau; and Maile Brown, Director of Sales and Marketing for the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau — with Deanna also stepping in for the Maui Visitors Bureau. Together, they painted a vibrant picture of the islands, highlighting their distinct personalities, shared cultural values, natural beauty, and focus on sustainable tourism.
O‘ahu
O‘ahu blends history with vibrant city life - from ‘Iolani Palace tours and lei-making in Chinatown to North Shore agro-tourism. The events calendar is lively, including Lei Day and the Honolulu Marathon. A major highlight is Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Auana, now showing at the Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel for the next 10 years.

Kaua‘i
Kaua‘i invites you to slow down and connect - with lush landscapes, rich culture, and fresh experiences. New culinary tours, eco-adventures, and voluntourism are adding depth to classic highlights like the Nāpali Coast and Waimea Canyon. Visitors are encouraged to explore places like Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge and embrace mindful travel through the Mālama Hawai‘i programme.

Island of Hawai‘i (Big Island)
The Big Island offers dramatic contrasts - volcanoes, rainforests, beaches, and coffee country. From Hilo’s waterfalls to Kohala’s luxury resorts and Kona’s bustling waterfront, each region has a unique flavour. Signature festivals like the Merrie Monarch, invites visitors to dive deeper into local culture

Maui
Maui’s story is one of resilience. As West Maui reopens, travellers can explore new farm tours, cultural experiences, and voluntourism options. Haleakalā remains a must-visit (book ahead), while festivals and Mālamafocused activities offer meaningful ways to support and connect with the local community.

With access to sharp industry rates — some discounted by up to 50% off standard rates — agents can build a custom itinerary, choose their travel dates (outside of peak blackout periods), and even bring a travel companion along too.
To get on board, agents just need to complete the New Caledonia Specialist E-learning Programme. From there, it’s a simple online application process, ideally submitted around two months before take-off, and the application is processed within 10 days.
Discounts on offer include 50% off at Chateau Royal Beach Resort & Spa, stay 3 pay 2 at Hotel Beaurivage, bonus extras at Sheraton Deva, 30% off AVIS car hire, and deals on diving and national park tours.
With New Caledonia officially reopened since late 2024, this is the perfect way for agents to reconnect with the destination.
Le Méridien Nouméa marks Major
Milestone
Le Méridien Nouméa is celebrating 30 years as one of New Caledonia’s landmark resorts, marking the occasion with fresh upgrades and a feel-good travel deal. To toast the milestone, both Le Méridien Nouméa and Sheraton Deva are offering the My Happiness Package—on until 28 February 2026. It includes a three-night stay, daily brekkie for two, and sweet bonuses like XPF20,000 (around NZ$320) in resort credit.
Families are sorted too, with up to two kids under 12 staying, eating, and playing for free when accompanied by a paying adult. Meanwhile, sister property Le Méridien Ile des Pins is still temporarily closed, but is set to reopen this August.

Aqualuna set for 2026 Opening
A stylish new spot is set to join New Caledonia’s tourism line-up in early 2026, with the opening of Aqualuna - an upmarket 4-star apartment hotel right in the heart of Nouméa. Sitting between Anse Vata and Lemon Bay, it’s perfectly placed for beach days, local bites, and some retail therapy.
Aqualuna will offer 74 roomy apartments—ranging from one to four bedrooms—within a complex that blends residential living with hotel comforts. Designed with both holidaymakers and business travellers in mind, it’s set to feature a massive 1,000 m² pool area, BBQ spots, a wellness spa, gym, and a business centre.
Whether you're a family chasing some sunshine or in town for work, Aqualuna’s shaping up to be a popular pick in the capital. Keep an eye out for more details as the 2026 opening approaches.

Baunti Tours Marquee Raises the Bar
Baunti Tours marked a major moment at Norfolk Island’s 2025 Bounty Day celebrations, rolling out a brand-new marquee that played host to a record 224 guests — their biggest crowd yet! The 10m x 40m structure, which arrived on the island in January, made its debut as the main venue for this year’s festivities.
Built to handle Norfolk’s unique weather and setting, the marquee opens up exciting new possibilities for everything from heritage days to private functions.
Set against the island’s stunning backdrop of rolling hills and coastal views, Bounty Day brought out the best of local culture — think traditional dress, performances, and a hearty feast to honour its Pitcairn roots. The marquee didn’t just hold up; it stole the show, proving Norfolk’s ready to host bigger, more polished events without losing its homegrown feel.
“This was a big step forward,” said a Baunti Tours spokesperson. “We welcomed more guests than ever and delivered a whole new experience that shows where Norfolk Island tourism is heading.”
