RESORT SPOTLIGHT

LIKULIKU LAGOON RESORT

An Icon Reimagined

When Likuliku Lagoon Resort swung its doors back open in early 2025, it did so with a fresh new look and feel, backed by a major FJD$10 million makeover.

Set on the pristine shores of Malolo Island in the Mamanucas, this adultsonly favourite has kept all the magic it's known for, while dialling things up with smart design, bold new flavours, and deeper roots in sustainability and culture.

For returning guests, the soul of Likuliku is still exactly where it should be, authentic, heartfelt, and unmistakably Fijian. But this latest chapter brings even more to love, adding new layers of comfort, connection and creativity.

Saluwaki:

A Taste of Something New

Topping the list of new additions is Saluwaki, an intimate dining experience that’s turning heads. This 28-seat venue is a once-per-stay dining experience, serving up Fijian-inspired Asian tapas that are as artful as they are delicious.

Think ember-roasted walu, handmade squid ink noodles, and clever flavour mashups plated on handcrafted Kigoromo crockery from Japan. It’s not just a meal, it’s a live dining theatre, with an open kitchen, curated cocktails, and a handpicked wine list setting the scene.

On top of that, dining at Sulawaki is included in the resort’s meals-inclusive package, ensuring every guest can fully indulge in this highlight experience.

Conservation Takes Centre Stage

Luxury with purpose is at the heart of Likuliku, and the brand-new Na Vanua Conservation Hub is a big step forward in this direction. ‘Na Vanua’ means ‘the land’ in Fijian, and here, guests can roll up their sleeves and get involved in meaningful conservation work, on land, in the sea, and with the local community. Developed alongside the award-winning Ahura Resorts Conservation Foundation, the hub supports hands-on projects like coral and mangrove restoration, native forest replanting, and saving the critically endangered Fiji Crested Iguana.

You can wander the herb gardens, check out the resort’s behind-thescenes recycling tours, or pop over to the local kindy that benefits from the foundation’s mahi. Even the nearby Honeymoon Island, Mociu, is part of the conservation programme - exclusive to guests, but carefully protected for future generations.

Luxury Bures, But Better

Accommodation has had a lift, with all bures now refreshed, including polished timber floors, stylish new wallpaper, modern tapware, and updated amenities across the board.

The highlight? Eleven Beachfront Bures now come with private plunge pools, boosting the total number of oceanfront pool villas to 29. That’s more options for laidback luxury with a front-row seat to the sea.

The iconic Over-Water Bures haven’t missed out either, they’ve been upgraded with deluxe touches in the bathing pavilions.

Spaces to Savour, with Soul Intact

Around the resort, familiar favourites have received a polish. Fijiana Restaurant now boasts a refurbished outdoor terrace, improved lighting, modern tiling, and a revamped breakfast buffet setup. Dua Tale Bar, with its dreamy lagoon views, has had a design shake-up too, bringing in new furniture and a stylish new mood.

The main pool’s have had an upgrade, and the public area bathrooms have been fully revamped. And in a nod to Likuliku’s eco ethos, all Beachfront and Deluxe Beachfront Bures now feature fully synthetic thatching, bringing the resort to 100% sustainable roofing.

Behind the scenes, Starlink-powered high-speed WiFi is now live, and curated playlists from Music Concierge flow through the resort’s bars and restaurant, adding an easy groove to every space.

Sustainability, Bottled

Coming very soon, Likuliku will begin to bottle its own still and sparkling water onsite, using recycled glass bottles branded just for the resort.

These will be refreshed daily in every bure, free of charge, and also supplied to sister property Malolo Island Resort. It's a small but important shift that cuts plastic waste and keeps things classy.

The Likuliku Way

For Tony Whitton, Owner and Managing Director of Ahura Resorts, the recent investment is about more than new bells and whistles.

“With a multi-million dollar investment, we’ve taken the resort to new heights, elevating both our offerings and the guest experience. These changes reinforce our commitment to providing an exceptional experience as one of Fiji’s premier luxury resorts.”

Still the Same Magic, Only More So

Likuliku Lagoon Resort has always been something special, a place where untouched beauty meets heartfelt luxury, and where culture and care go hand-in-hand. Now, with its refreshed spaces, reimagined dining, and next-level sustainability, this Fijian gem has raised the bar once again.

The lagoon still sparkles, the welcome is still warm, and the soul of the place remains just as it should be. But now, there’s even more reason to fall in love all over again.

RESORT SPOTLIGHT

BEACHCOMBER ISLAND RESORT FIJI

Beachcomber

Transformed

Beachcomber Island Resort has undergone a vibrant transformation, blending modern upgrades with its signature hospitality and the laid-back charm that’s attracted travellers for decades.

Sitting in the heart of the Mamanuca Islands, this tiny, circular motu has been welcoming travellers since the 1960s. Once known as Fiji’s “party island,” Beachcomber has evolved into a vibrant resort that now appeals to a much wider range of travellers. From couples to families, and adventurers, Beachcomber Island is a place you’ll find the Fiji of your dreams.

Fresh Faces

New ownership and a multi-million-dollar redevelopment has injected new life in the resort. In fact, the island has been truly transformed, lifting the guest experience to new heights, without losing its laid-back charm that has always made Beachcomber a magnet for Fiji fun.

Fresh Spaces

All 40 rooms have been fully refurbished and fitted with air-conditioning, while common spaces and reception have had a fresh new look too. Two expansive deck areas now provide the perfect spot to lounge by the pool or enjoy meals with a sea view. At the heart of it all is a new infinity pool with a swim-up bar - without question the resort’s social hub.

Wellness & Indulgence

Pampering should be part of any Fiji holiday and Beachcomber Island delivers big time. The Senibua Spa has been fully upgraded with six new treatment rooms offering a magical mix of traditional Fijian therapies and modern beauty treatments. In short, it’s a serene retreat within the island. And it’s an important part of Beachcomber’s new balance - not just lively and fun, but also a place for wellness and renewal.

Sustainable and Smart

Behind the scenes, significant upgrades ensure the island runs smoother than ever. An all-new Blue Line plumbing system delivers stronger, more reliable water pressure to every room and facility, supported by expanded storage tanks and a modern desalination plant that turns seawater into a sustainable supply of fresh water. On the digital side, Starlink internet now blankets the entire island, offering fast, reliable connectivity whether you’re streaming, working remotely, or video-calling (envious) loved ones.

More to See, Do, and Discover

Beachcomber’s busy activity programme continues, and is now joined by new off-island adventures. Its turtle sanctuary is thriving, home to young turtles guests can learn about as part of ongoing conservation work. Dining has also been elevated, with a refreshed restaurant, themed nights, and a new boutique showcasing locally crafted gifts. Even the boats have been upgraded with new engines, ensuring smooth transfers and tours.

A New Chapter

From its party-island roots to a refreshed, multi-market offering, Beachcomber Island Resort has evolved, while holding on to what makes it special: intimacy, fun, and genuine Fijian hospitality. With new facilities, wellness spaces, sustainability initiatives, and a stronger focus on comfort, it’s ready to welcome a new generation of travellers - while staying true to its promise: easy to get to, but so hard to leave.

Make the Most of the Mamanucas

Honeymoon Cay

Slip away to a pristine sandbank for a two-hour escape of pure tranquillity. Honeymoon Cay is a haven of soft white sand, turquoise waters, and serenity. Relax on deck chairs under an umbrella, take a dip, or enjoy drinks (pre-arranged at extra cost).

Scuba: Discover Fiji’s Underwater Magic

Breakas Romantic Rituals By The Sea

At Breakas Beach Resort, Vanuatu, evenings unfold as a series of weekly rituals designed to immerse guests in the rhythm of the islands. Each night brings its own special experience, blending culture, cuisine, and celebration in a beachfront setting.

The week begins on Wednesdays with the Spirit of Melanesia, where traditional dance, soulful music, and a feast of island delicacies create a cultural embrace under the stars. Fridays are for romance, as couples gather for a Special Dinner before the night ignites with a dazzling fire show, sending sparks and flames into the tropical sky.

On Saturdays, the ocean offers its bounty with Seafood Night, a ritual of freshness featuring lobster, prawns, and the daily catch, served beachfront with the sea breeze as your constant companion. Throughout the rest of the week, evenings are filled with live entertainment, from acoustic performances to upbeat island rhythms, creating the perfect soundtrack to your stay. These rituals are more than events, they are moments of connection, celebration, and memory-making. And they might even be the perfect time to pop the big question!

White Grass Provides Front Row Seat to Nature

Humpback whale season has arrived in Vanuatu, and with it comes some awe-inspiring marine moments. Each year, these gentle giants make their way through Vanuatu’s warm tropical waters to breed and calve, before heading back down to the Antarctic. And right now, lucky visitors are being treated to regular sightings, think mums and calves gliding past. Sometimes, they can even be spotted directly from where you’re staying, like White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa in Tanna.

Divers staying at the resort are enjoying in-water experiences with the PADI ECO team. They’ve heard the eerie, beautiful whale song echoing underwater and have even spotted whales cruising along the House Reef. There’s a real buzz around the resort, with staff and guests stopping in their tracks to catch a glimpse. For many, seeing a humpback up close is a bucket-list moment, and Vanuatu just happens to offer one of the best seats in the house.

Let the Good Times Roll

Port Vila’s Big Welkam Back For Cruise ships

A welcome boost for Vanuatu as cruise ships officially return to Port Vila, with Carnival Adventures docking on 8 August 2025 and bringing over 2,000 visitors to the capital. It marked the first cruise arrival since December 2024, following the region’s steady recovery from a major earthquake earlier in the year.

To mark the occasion, a festive "Welkam Back" celebration was held on the waterfront, complete with vibrant cultural performances, string bands, bustling market stalls, on-site currency exchange, and friendly local ambassadors giving guests a proper island-style welcome.

Government ministers, tourism leaders, and international supporters turned out in force to recognise the big moment and show their backing for cruise tourism’s role in Vanuatu’s economic bounce-back. Deputy Prime Minister Johnny Koanapo Rasu thanked Carnival for being the first to return, highlighting the positive flow-on effect for local businesses. Great stuff.

Conveniently located at the Holiday Inn Resort, Port Vila, Palms Casino offers a boutique gaming experience that mixes gaming excitement with genuine island hospitality. Open daily from 11:30am, guests can try their hand at Blackjack, Roulette, Palms Poker, or Baccarat, with low limits starting from VT100.

Enjoy your favourite slots in a clean, non-smoking area designed for ultimate comfort, or catch the big game on big screens that bring the best of live sports action right to you. Round off your visit with cocktails and bar snacks in our comfortable, air-conditioned setting.

Farewell to a Vanuatu Icon

One of Vanuatu’s most iconic stays, the Overwater Villas at Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu have been officially retired. As the South Pacific’s first overwater villas, they helped redefine luxury in the region, offering guests direct lagoon access, panoramic views, and unforgettable touches like canoe-delivered breakfasts and a charming hanging bridge. Following the December 2024 earthquake, structural assessments revealed foundational stresses that no longer met the resort’s safety standards. With guest wellbeing and future innovation, the decision was made to carefully remove the 10 villas.

While their time has come to an end, the villas leave behind a lasting legacy of adventure, romance, and authentic island hospitality. Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu now looks ahead to new experiences, with a continued commitment to safety, sustainability, and celebrating Vanuatu’s rich tourism story.

Paddle into Paradise with Watersports Port Vila

Watersports Port Vila is making waves with a brand-new sea kayaking experience that showcases Vanuatu’s pristine beauty from the water. With four double and two single kayaks from Mission Sea Kayaks in New Zealand, guests can now paddle straight from Port Vila harbour to the stunning Wotarua (Paradise Cove). But it’s more than just a paddle. Think gliding across turquoise waters, stopping for a picnic lunch on a quiet beach, then snorkelling over colourful reefs. Along the way, you might even spot turtles, dugongs, or playful dolphins joining the journey. And the adventures don’t stop there. Owner Andy Martin, a seasoned kayaking guide with extensive experience in New Zealand and Canada, has even bigger plans. On the horizon is a thrilling five-day expedition around the northern tip of Efate. Picture camping on secluded beaches, hiking to the summit of Nguna Volcano, and soaking in natural hot springs after days of coastal exploration. We look forward to the launch!

Port Vila’s Icon Market Reopens

Port Vila’s much-loved Market House is open again, welcoming locals and travellers alike with open arms and big smiles. A true hub of Vanuatu’s tourism experience, the Market House is buzzing once more with its colourful stalls, tropical produce, handcrafted treasures, and that unmistakable island charm. You’ll find everything from woven baskets and shell jewellery to tasty local snacks, and of course, plenty of friendly yarns with the legendary “mamas” who run the show.

The reopening is more than just a return to shopping. It’s a reflection of resilience, community spirit, and the vibrant culture that makes Vanuatu so special. If you're working with clients planning 2025–2026 getaways, be sure to spread the word: Port Vila’s Market House is back, and it’s better than ever!

Room to Relax: Frangipani House at Erakor

Looking for a little extra space on your next Vanuatu escape? The Frangipani House at Erakor Island Resort could be just the spot. Opened in late June, this absolute beachfront two-bedroom pool house has already become a favourite for families, couples, and friends travelling together. The house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms (including a master with ensuite), plus a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, and a generous entertainment deck. Its highlight is a private pool set only steps from the blue lagoon, offering guests the luxury of a swim at any time with a picture-perfect backdrop.

Blending privacy, comfort, and convenience, the Frangipani House feels like a self-contained beach retreat, while still giving guests full access to all the amenities of Erakor Island Resort. With space to spread out and a setting that’s pure paradise, it’s designed for unforgettable island holidays.

A Feast of Island Flavours at Iririki

Sitting in a prime private island position in Port Vila Harbour, the iconic Iririki Island Resort & Spa serves up more than just stunning views, it’s a full-on flavour escape with three unique dining spots to explore.

Start the day at Azure Restaurant, where the breakfast buffet is full of delicious tropical fruits, fresh pastries, and warm breads. Come evening, it shifts gears with refined dishes like slow-braised beef cheeks, seared yellowfin tuna, and a zingy gin and lemon tart topped with honeycomb. Things heat up midweek with themed nights, Melanesian Cultural Night on Tuesdays, a hearty BBQ buffet on Thursdays, and the Chef’s Gourmet Buffet on Saturdays, paired with the fiery Vanua Fire Show. Looking to mark something special? Azure also hosts romantic dinners and champagne breakfasts for those extra memorable moments.

For a more laid-back vibe, Infinity Bar is the place to sip on locally roasted Tanna Coffee, quench your thirst with a local Tusker beer, or enjoy a handcrafted cocktail. Over by the pool, Sunset Bar & Grill keeps things casual with pizzas and swim-up service, and both bars serve up islandstyle Happy Hours daily.

Team Effort For Big Natadola Beach Clean Up

In early August, the team at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, alongside local community members, rolled up their sleeves for a largescale clean-up of Natadola Beach, collecting more than 700 kilograms of rubbish and debris in just a few hours.

The effort was part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ global sustainability programme, Journey to Tomorrow, and supports Tourism Fiji’s “Bin It or Bag It” campaign, which calls on everyone to take responsibility for waste, especially in shared spaces like beaches and parks.

Natadola Beach can be enjoyed by both locals and visitors, and it often bears the brunt of litter left behind after picnics and gatherings. The clean-up brought together resort staff and community volunteers with one shared goal, to protect and care for this iconic stretch of coastline.

“Our colleagues see themselves as custodians of Natadola Beach,” said Lachlan Walker, Regional General Manager – Fiji & Pacific. “Collecting over 700 kilograms in one morning highlights both the scale of the issue and the power of collective action.” Well done to all involved.

The extended schedule gave more space for Fijian industry partners to connect, while travel agents from across Aotearoa were able to spend an entire day diving deeper into all that Fiji has to offer. Agents travelled in from right around the country, including Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Wellington, Kerikeri, Whangārei, New Plymouth, the Kāpiti Coast, Ashburton, and Hawke’s Bay, making it a truly nationwide turnout. Tom Svenson from Tourism Fiji commented, “Feedback about the event was extremely positive, with both suppliers and agents getting great value from the new, more immersive format that was dedicated to Fiji and really brought the spirit of Fiji to life.”

New Yasawa Flyer III Boosts Island Route

South Sea Cruises Group officially welcomed its newest vessel, the Yasawa Flyer III, at a special launch event held at Port Denarau in mid August. The celebration was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka as Chief Guest, alongside key players from across Fiji’s tourism sector.

With daily scheduled services now underway, the Yasawa Flyer III continues the Group’s long-standing route to the Yasawa Islands, boosting daily passenger capacity by 30%. It’s the largest new-build fast ferry ever constructed for Fiji and was purpose-built to deliver comfort, efficiency, and a smoother ride. With room for 320 passengers, the vessel features spacious air-conditioned lounges, custom seating, outdoor decks, a fully licensed bar, complimentary Wi-Fi, and charging stations. It also marks a national first, introducing Fiji’s only full ride-control system, designed to reduce motion and improve passenger comfort on the water.

Under the hood, the ferry runs on next-generation engines, offering a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency and up to 20% fuel savings per passenger at full capacity. While the team has an eye on hydrogen for the future, they note it’ll depend on infrastructure developments across the region.

Tourism Fiji Sets FTE for March 2026

Tourism Fiji has confirmed the return of the Fiji Tourism Exchange (FTE), set for 27–28 March 2026, bringing together international travel trade, media, and Fiji’s tourism operators for two days of networking and knowledge sharing.

Recognised as Fiji’s leading tourism industry event, FTE is where global buyers connect with local tourism products, driving new partnerships and sector growth. The 2025 event drew representatives from 19 countries, with 147 international buyers and media meeting with 84 seller companies, resulting in more than 4,300 business meetings and over 560 total participants.

The 2026 edition promises to build on that success with more international buyers, fresh networking formats, and a continued focus on sustainability and authentic Fijian experiences. Moving the exchange to March strategically aligns it with seasonal travel trends and Fiji’s peak visitor period.

“FTE is about creating meaningful connections,” said Robert Thompson, Executive Head of Regions. “By coming together ahead of peak season, we provide partners with the strongest platform to secure new business and share Fiji’s unique stories.”

New Level

Fiji Airways has carved out a reputation as one of the region’s top airlines, lifting the passenger experience at every step and continuing to lead the way in Pacific aviation. Now, with a fresh focus on elevated inflight dining, upgraded service across the cabin, and even more perks for frequent flyers, the airline is going even further.

Pacific Rim Flavours Take Flight

With a fresh new Business Class menu and a more personalised approach to inflight dining, Fiji Airways is dialling up the warmth and hospitality it’s known for, bringing a real taste of the Pacific onboard. Inspired by the diverse flavours of the Pacific Rim, the new Business Class menu brings together culinary influences from across Asia, Oceania, and North America, while staying proudly rooted in Fiji. Local ingredients take centre stage, shining a light on the depth and richness of Fijian food culture. And it’s not just what’s on the plate that’s changed. The new On-Demand Dining service lets you choose what you’d like to eat, and when. Fancy a full meal after take-off? Or maybe something light before landing? It’s up to you.

To top it off, the crew have received specialist training in culinary service and wine pairing, helping to deliver a genuine restaurant-style experience 30,000 feet above the Pacific.

Tastier Travel in Economy, Too

It’s not just Business Class that’s had a refresh either. Travellers in Economy can look forward to improved meal options, a new cocktail and

mocktail list, and added treats like hot chocolate, plus a wider range of snacks and drinks throughout the flight.

The upgraded food and beverage service is already available on selected long-haul routes and will land on the Auckland–Nadi service from 20 October 2025. A full rollout across all New Zealand routes is expected by July 2026.

Extra Benefits for Frequent Flyers

There’s good news for loyal travellers, too. Since joining the oneworld® alliance in April 2025, Fiji Airways customers can earn and redeem points or miles across the global network, with added perks like priority checkin, lounge access, and smoother connections.

Courts at DYWA and Lions Park fill up nightly with dozens of players laughing and competing in good fun. “Visitors are welcome to walk in and join open play any evening,” says Efferding. “We even have extra paddles and balls on hand.”

Where to Play:

DYWA Indoor Courts: Mon/Wed/Fri 4–7pm, Tue/Thu 5–7am (3–6 courts available)

Hiking Oge Beach: Nature’s Hidden Masterpiece

Tucked away on Olosega Island lies one of the Pacific’s most rewarding trails: the Oge Beach Trail. This one-hour trek delivers everything a hiker could want, towering cliffs, lush forests, nesting seabirds, and finally, an untouched beach that feels like the edge of the world. The trail itself is moderately challenging, with uneven ground and little shade, so sturdy shoes and plenty of water are a must. The best time to go is in the morning during a receding tide, when the beach is wide and welcoming. Expect to pass beneath curious seabirds like red-footed boobies circling overhead. Add in the local legends tied to the rocks near the beach, and you’ll enjoy both a cultural and natural experience in one.

Pro Tips:

• Bring water, snacks, sun protection, and sturdy shoes

• Always check tide times before leaving

• Ask locals about the love story tied to the rocks, you won’t regret it!

Close Encounters of the Humpback Kind

Imagine floating in the clear blue waters of the Pacific when, out of the silence, a giant shadow glides past. A humpback whale, graceful, majestic, and larger than life, moves effortlessly beside you.

For a moment, its ancient eye meets yours, and the world stands still. This is not just an adventure; it is a life-changing encounter. Every year, humpback whales journey thousands of kilometres from the icy seas of Antarctica to Tonga’s warm, sheltered waters. Here, they give birth, raise their young, and find sanctuary. Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can swim alongside them, making it a truly rare and unforgettable experience.

For Tongans, whales hold cultural and spiritual significance, guardians of the ocean and symbols of life’s great journey. Today, visitors can share in that connection through carefully guided tours that put respect and conservation first. Licensed operators follow strict rules to ensure both whales and swimmers are safe, giving you a front-row seat to one of nature’s greatest wonders without causing harm.

No two encounters are ever the same. One day it may be a mother gently guiding her calf to the surface; the next, a playful juvenile rolling and spinning in the deep blue. Each moment leaves you humbled, awed, and forever changed.

Swimming with whales is more than an activity, it’s an invitation. An invitation to see the world differently, to feel the heartbeat of the ocean, and to leave with a renewed sense of wonder and responsibility. Tonga offers this rare privilege. Come, take the plunge, and swim with these gentle giants of the sea.

Whale Watching Season: When To Go Swimming

“The setting and scenery were unsurpassed with some of the best snorkeling I have done in the Pacific, both off the resort, Mounu Island, and within a twenty minute boat trip. The highlight of course was the swimming with the Humpback Whales. It is an almost overwhelming experience to be in the water with these enormous, beautiful creatures. It was like living in a David Attenborough documentary!”

Geoff Taylor, NZ

Humpback whales visit Tonga from early June through to early November, with the peak season in August and September. While Tonga’s tropical waters are warm, wearing a wetsuit is recommended when swimming with the whales.

“Swim Beside Giants”

“Discover Tonga’s Winter Magic: Swim with Whales in Paradise!”

From July to October, these gentle giants can be seen breaching, tail-slapping, and nurturing their young calves in sheltered bays. For overseas travelers, Tonga o ers a rare and unforgettable opportunity to witness the beauty and grace of whales up close, surrounded by the pristine natural charm of the South Paci c.

As part of the Australian Convict Sites, Kingston is home to the ruins of old gaols, historic military buildings, and colonial government houses that tell the story of the island’s early chapters, from its convict roots to its unique Pitcairn heritage.

Visitors can explore the area at their own pace with a self-guided itinerary, using maps and resources available on the Kingston website. The Norfolk Island Museum also offers tag-along tours (included with a museum pass) that help bring the stories to life. For those keen to dig even deeper, locally led tours of the island’s historic cemetery are available for an additional fee. The handcarved headstones here offer moving insights into the lives, and losses, of Norfolk’s early settlers.

Explore Beyond Beyond the Skyline: Discover Hong Kong’s Great Outdoors

When

most people think of Hong Kong, it’s the towering skyscrapers, buzzing neon streets, and iconic harbour that spring to mind. But beyond the concrete and glass lies a side of Hong Kong that surprises many: lush hills, quiet islands, and a whole lot of space to breathe.

With around 40% of land set aside as country park, Hong Kong is also a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to swap the city’s hustle for a quieter side of life.

Walks

with a View

One of the best-known trails is the Dragon’s Back, on the southeastern side of Hong Kong Island, within Shek O Country Park. It’s a stunning ridgeline walk with sweeping views over the coastline, finishing up at Big Wave Bay, a laid-back beach where you’ll often find local surfers doing their thing. Tip: bring your togs and cool off with a swim. If you feel like more of a wander, Hong Kong’s trail network stretches over 300 kilometres. There’s something for everyone, from gentle rambles around Victoria Peak to the more challenging Tai To Yan in Lam Tsuen Country Park (New Territories), where your efforts will be rewarded with views across deep green valleys and hidden reservoirs.

Island Hopping and Coastal Escapes

Hong Kong is also home to more than 250 islands. A short ferry ride can whisk you away to a totally different vibe. Like Cheung Chau, where life moves at a slower pace, cars are replaced by bikes, and bakeries still churn out treats from family recipes passed down for generations. Or Discovery Bay, where sandy beaches meet waterfront eateries with a resort-style feel.

For something more off the beaten track, head to the UNESCO-listed Global Geopark in Sai Kung. Think wild volcanic rock formations, natural sea arches, and unbelievably clear water. Boat tours are a great way to take it all in.

Culture by the Coast

Exploring Hong Kong’s outdoors isn’t just about the landscapes, it’s about the cultural history too. On Lantau Island, the stilt houses of

a traditional way of life that’s stood

Further north, Lau Fau Shan is known for its oysters, farmed here since the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD). You can learn all about the process, then savour freshly shucked oysters at local spots right by the water.

A Breath of Fresh Air

For those chasing a bit of peace and quiet, Hong Kong’s green spaces offer a proper breather. Try a forest-bathing walk at Lung Fu Shan Country Park, where birdsong and rustling leaves do wonders for the mind. Or head to Lau Shui Heung Reservoir, where still water reflects the trees like a mirror, so calm, and around a 50 minute drive from Central.

Another Side to Hong Kong

In Hong Kong it’s easy to get from city to nature. Within an hour, you could be hiking through forest, paddling a kayak along a quiet bay, or wandering through a village where traditions are still part of daily life. Public transport makes it all pretty seamless, and the ferries are part of the adventure.

So while the skyline might be what first draws you in, Hong Kong’s great outdoors is a real eye-opener. It’s not hidden, it’s just waiting to be explored.
