GEMMA DOOLEY
Gemma came to sailing later in life, beginning her journey four years ago when she and her partner rescued a written-off Coast 34 in Bluff, New Zealand
After two years of rebuilding and living aboard while exploring New Zealand’s coastlines, they set sail for the South Pacific to discover new horizons
Gemma has a strong background in events planning, and brings her organisational skills and love of sailing to the Island Cruising team, helping fellow sailors create unforgettable experiences on the water.
About five years ago Cecile bought her first boat and having jumped in the deep end head first, there were many new experiences and challenges ahead of her
Yet Cecile had the drive to learn and a dream to sail to distant lands and after years of hard work repairing and preparing, she finally got to live the dream and sail off to the islands
Cecile has a bachelor’s degree in marketing and event management. Having been a part of the 2024 Pacific Rally, she was keen to be involved with the future of this fantastic event and to also help other cruisers live the dream

I am super excited to announce that the tickets for our Island Cruising 40 Birthday Party go on sale today! This event is being held on the 29 November at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron and will be a wonderful opportunity for all our past, present and future rally participants to catch up with one another and relive their sailing adventures with each other! th th
We are also planning a few fun events with our rally partners in the week leading up to the reunion party, so it will be a fun time to be in Auckland and enjoying some of the activities we hope to have on offer
I can’t wait to celebrate with you all!
This month I attended the NZ Marine Conference in Tauranga It was an excellent few days, and I got to catch up with many of our rally partner businesses. The theme was ‘Navigating the Future’, and we had some really interesting sessions on technology, AI, electric boats and much more. Very worthwhile!
I then headed back up to Fiji and then on to Kiribati with the UNODC where I got to present to the local customs, immigration, police, navy and others about the movements of yachts throughout the South Pacific There is still a lot of concern that sailors are trafficking drugs through the Pacific and the two vessels that have recently been caught in French Polynesia and Vanuatu aren’t helping the yachties reputation in this space! It was great to meet some of the people who are working behind the scenes on all your Advance Notice of Arrival documentation and learn about some of the challenges they have when it comes to dealing with sailors. If you are a member of Island Cruising you can read my detailed report about what I got up to here
While I was in Fiji I got the chance to catch up with quite a few of our Pacific Rally participants in Denarau, Musket and Vuda marinas, and I am heading back up to Fiji again this weekend to go to the Musket Cove Regatta - which is a huge fun social event, I hope to see you all there!
We now have close to 240 yachts joining us for our Go West to Australia and Sail South to New Zealand rallies. In the last couple of weeks they have learned about all the different ports of entry, marinas and yards on offer (some offering some very generous discounts too!) We’ve covered off the Insurance Requirements for Australian marinas - including a top up for liability cover for those who need it, we’ve made a start on their Biofouling and Pest Management plans, and learned about which visa to apply for and some tips on completing all the Customs arrival forms Today we are having a webinar with all the officials to give everyone the opportunity to ask questions about the arrival formalities.
We aim to make all your Pacific adventures easy!
Our Pacific Rally 2026 pre-departure preparation training, with 45 yachts registered already for their adventures next year, it is shaping up to be another fabulous season in the Pacific!
Tonight I launch the South Island Rally, and we’ve already got quite a few pre-registrations. This is an adventure of a lifetime and a great way to explore our own incredible backyard Many of the places you can get to on the rally are not places you can drive to, so you really get to see a different side of New Zealand
I highly recommend joining our rallies early to make the preparations easy, we give you all the projects in bite sized pieces so you have the best chance of making it to the start line feeling relaxed and ready to go!
You can join us in the Pacific next season here.
Enjoy this month’s magazine and happy sailing!

With over 1,500 km of forest-lined coastline and a maze of deep blue waterways, the Sounds are a sailor’s dream. Formed by ancient, drowned valleys, the trio of Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru, and Pelorus Sounds delivers secluded anchorages, bush-covered hills, and coves so peaceful they feel like secrets whispered by the sea
Take refuge at Ship Cove, a historic reserve that holds a special place in New Zealand’s history, being Captain James Cook’s favourite anchorage during his three Pacific voyages in the 1770s It is now the gateway to the Queen Charlotte Track a five-day hike through native forest, waterfalls, and panoramic ridgelines Even if you’re not trekking the full trail, a short walk ashore offers a taste of Marlborough’s rich heritage
The Marlborough Sounds are sprinkled with breathtaking waterfront lodges and restaurants, many offering moorings and tender services for visiting boaties
A long-standing local favourite is the historic Furneaux Lodge, where you can dine on the sweeping lawns
overlooking Endeavour inlet They also offer accommodation ranging from contemporary suites to family-friendly cottages, all nestled around the original homestead built circa 1903
Venture around to Wilson Bay in Pelorus Sound and you’ll discover The Lodge at Te Rawa, whose waterfront restaurant welcomes both guests and day visitors The menu features a generous selection of seafood dishes and if you’ve had a successful day on the water, they’ll even cook your catch while you sit back and unwind

We shared some preliminary findings in previous newsletters which showed large reductions in exotic caulerpa cover at some sites where it had previously been abundant. That research is now complete, and the finalised report confirms significant reductions in the coverage of exotic caulerpa seaweed in some areas where there had been heavy infestation.
While these reductions are notable, scientific advice remains uncertain if this decline is a one-off event, whether exotic caulerpa will return or this is a more permanent reduction
We asked NIWA to investigate following many reports from members of the public that the scale of exotic caulerpa had significantly reduced in some places. We wanted to verify this, understand the extent of what’s known as ‘biomass reduction’, and to gain
insight into what might have caused any change.
Over November and December 2024, the scientists used a combination of diver field surveys, community observations, and environmental data analysis to investigate the situationTheir report confirms that a significant reduction in exotic caulerpa biomass had occurred at two Aotea Great Barrier Island locations – Okupu Blind Bay and Schooner Bay
There had also been a significant reduction in the caulerpa population at Waiheke Island
At some dive transects (the measured plots the divers surveyed) where coverage had been over 90 percent of the seabed, exotic caulerpa had reduced to less than 10 percent The scientists say these declines were mostly on soft, sandy seabed, while some caulerpa remained or increased on harder surfaces such as reef and artificial structures
Evaluationofexotic caulerpabiomassreduction
OmakiwiBiomass ReductionReport
At the time of the NIWA investigation at the end of last year, no significant change was found in the caulerpa coverage in Tryphena Harbour at Aotea, or at Omakiwi Cove in the Bay of Islands.
After this, however, new reports came in that the caulerpa had also reduced at Tryphena, Great Barrier Island and Omakiwi Cove in Northland Further NIWA dive investigations in May 2025 revealed significant reductions had also happened in those two places These are captured in a second report The reductions at Omakiwi Cove have been caused by added sediment and resulting stress to the seaweed following Cyclone Tam in April. Most of the caulerpa there, particularly on soft sediment seabed, is completely covered in silt
This is different to the situation being reported at Waiheke and Aotea
The scientists have not identified a single factor that would explain the biomass reductions at Aotea and Waiheke, but they do indicate that the reduction is likely to have been caused by a combination of seasonal cycles causing changes in temperature, light and nutrient availability; and possibly reproductive cycles, storms and flooding.
The report recommends continued monitoring to build understanding of this and help inform future control work. This would include long-term monitoring programmes, further study of environmental and reproductive triggers and more research into how exotic caulerpa functions
Biosecurity New Zealand is inviting interested groups and individuals to provide input into a review of the Controlled Area Notices (CANs) that are being used to prevent spread of exotic caulerpa through human activities.
There are currently CANs in place at five locations: Aotea Great Barrier Island, Ahuahu Great Mercury Island, Waiheke Island, Hauturu-o-Toi/Little Barrier Island and Te Rāwhiti Inlet in the Bay of Islands, Northland. They vary but generally place some restriction on anchoring and fishing as these are high-risk activities for spreading this pest.
All these CANs will expire on 30 September 2025, and Biosecurity New Zealand is seeking feedback on three potential options.
You can see details of the current CANs and information about the review at wwwbiosecuritygovtnz/caulerpa-rules
Detailed information about the review
Nāku noa, nā
The exotic caulerpa response team
Give your feedback on these 3 options:
Option 1 – No CANs and public information encouraging good biosecurity practices
Option 2 – Status quo – CANs for infested areas that meet certain criteria, with varying restrictions
Option 3 – A cross-regional CAN covering the habitable range for exotic caulerpa requiring checking and cleaning anchors and equipment ("Bag It, Bin It"). With this option, there could be stricter controls in specific high-risk zones

When Colonel David Burke first bought a Seawind 1160 and put it into charter, he had no idea it would become the foundation for an extraordinary Pacific cruising adventure.
Now, sitting in the pristine Lau Group of Fiji aboard his upgraded Seawind 1260, David’s story demonstrates how charter boat ownership can be the perfect stepping stone to achieving blue water cruising dreams
David’s journey began during his military career, which saw him serving in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and across the Middle East as a helicopter pilot. “We were away overseas a lot,” David explains. “Charter was the perfect solution because when we came home for holidays, we’d always have a week or two on the boat. It was a great way for us to buy the boat we wanted”
For five years, their Seawind 1160 earned charter income while they were stationed abroad. The arrangement proved ideal –the boat was professionally maintained, always ready for their brief visits home, and gradually paying for itself. When they were ready to upgrade, they sold the 1160 and purchased a Seawind 1260, which also went straight into charter for another five years.
“The charter experience was very positive,” David reflects. “When we came home, the boat was always really well maintained. We could just get on the boat, go for a sail, hand it back and not worry about it while we were away. ”
After retiring in 2019, David and his wife Linda took their 1260 out of charter and began what David calls a “midlife upgrade.” They completely overhauled the boat’s systems, installing lithium batteries, new electrical systems, safety gear, life rafts, and new sails This intensive preparation phase proved invaluable for their subsequent adventures
“Having been part of upgrading the boat and being involved in even technical things I wasn’t able to do myself… I had a good understanding of what was there,” David notes This hands-on knowledge became crucial when dealing with the inevitable repairs that come with extended cruising
Rather than tackle their first major passage alone, David and Linda joined the Pacific Rally, a decision that proved transformative The rally provided comprehensive preparation through webinars, safety courses, and detailed guides that brought their boat up to Category 1 standard
“What is an incredibly daunting thing to look at to start with, she just breaks it down into bite-sized pieces,” David says of rally organizer Vicky Moore’s approach The rally’s support network proved invaluable, from realtime boat tracking to weather routing assistance and even diplomatic support during unexpected political unrest in New Caledonia
After two years and 10,000 nautical miles of Pacific cruising, David’s enthusiasm is infectious Their Seawind has taken them through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and now Fiji –destinations accessible only by boat and offering experiences impossible to replicate on land “Don’t leave it too late,” David advises potential cruisers
David’s enthusiasm for his Seawind 1260 is evident as he describes its performance across thousands of Pacific miles.
“The Seawind is just designed for this sort of Pacific sailing It’s just a great boat, it’s very comfortable, and it actually sails really well,” he explains from his anchorage among much larger vessels.
“I’ve got some great photos of our boat sitting amongst a whole bunch of great big French boats and we look like a little greyhound compared to the rest of them. We can sail to windward quite comfortably”
The boat’s seaworthiness has been thoroughly tested in challenging conditions “We’ve had 30-knot squalls and big seas and wind on the nose when we didn’t expect it. And the boat just handles it superbly,” David notes “For just the two of us, I think the 1260 is a perfect size. It’s manageable and if we have an issue and I have to go up front and handle sails between a husband and wife in their 60s, it’s a good size.”
His testimony echoes what many experienced cruisers have discovered –that while the industry trend has moved toward larger boats, the Seawind’s thoughtful design and robust construction make it an ideal choice for serious blue water cruising. For those considering the charter-tocruising path, David’s story proves it’s not just viable – it’s brilliant. Charter ownership provided the financial foundation and boat familiarity that made their Pacific adventure possible, transforming what could have been an overwhelming dream into an achievable, step-by-step reality.

The Yacht Sales Co.’s expert team will be available throughout the day to provide guidance and share their knowledge with those considering the sale of a vessel, upgrading for a future adventure, or refining a yacht for local cruising SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER AUCKLAND 10am - 4pm
As the Pacific sailing season draws to a close and Island Cruising Rally yachts make their southbound journey, Auckland’s Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will serve as the perfect port of call for sailors preparing for their next chapter
The Yacht Sales Co. will host a special New Zealand Open Day designed for returning cruisers and boating enthusiasts The free event will offer opportunities to connect with fellow sailors, gain practical insights for the months ahead, and explore an impressive selection of premium yachts for sale
The Open Day will feature a series of free Information Sessions specifically tailored to the needs of sailors returning from offshore voyages.
Sail Care and Maintenance –
Practical advice for addressing wear and tear following a Pacific season.
Cruising Sail Options for Performance and Durability –
An overview of sail designs and materials suited to both coastal sailing and bluewater passages
Selling a Boat – Expert tips on preparing and marketing a yacht for sale in the New Zealand or Australian market
Navigating the Process of Obtaining an International Voyage Certificate – Guidance on meeting the requirements for future offshore cruising
Cruising the Pacific – Planning insights from experienced sailors, including routes, seasonal considerations, and notable destinations
In addition to the seminar program, attendees will be able to step aboard a range of premium yachts on display (final lineup to be confirmed), allowing direct comparison of designs, layouts, and features. This will present a rare opportunity to view multiple highquality vessels in one location and engage with the team most familiar with them.
The Yacht Sales Co recognises the unique position of returning cruisers many having recently completed a season exploring tropical anchorages and understands the importance of planning the next stage of a yachting journey For some, this will mean settling into local waters; for others, preparing a yacht for another offshore departure or making changes to suit evolving cruising plans The Open Day has been designed to support this transition with both practical advice and networking opportunities
With the stunning waterfront setting of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron as the backdrop, the event will combine valuable educational content with a welcoming social atmosphere, encouraging conversation, knowledge-sharing, and inspiration for future voyages

Canvas and Covers is more than a marine canvas workshop. It’s a place where innovation meets craftsmanship, and community spirit runs deep.
For Brendan, owner-operator of Canvas and Covers Whangarei, the ocean has never been just a view it’s been a way of life. Growing up in Northland, he first set sail at the age of 11, and the saltwater never left his veins Competitive racing followed, sharpening his skills, building resilience, and instilling a deep respect for precision and performance. Those same qualities now shape the thriving business he and his wife, Penny, built from scratch
Brendan proudly sponsors the Whangarei Cruising Club Trailer Yacht Series and supports Island Cruising as a Silver Partner, believing sailing connects people, teaches life skills, and strengthens coastal ties This ethos is also reflected in the company’s strong apprenticeship programme, designed to guide the next generation of marine trimmers.
Brendan’s career began as a sailmaker with Doyle in Auckland, where he refined his craft and gained industry qualifications. But the call of Northland brought him back home, where stints at Palmer Canvas and UK Sailmakers gave him technical mastery and an insider’s understanding of what makes great marine canvas work and U-Dek installations.
The real turning point came after the birth of his daughter Brendan and Penny decided it was time to take the helm themselves. Working from their garage, they produced high-quality marine covers and upholstery, pouring in skill, creativity, and determination. Word spread quickly, prompting a move to Port Road, an expanded team, and eventually a leap to a larger site on Reyburn Street This gave them a dedicated production team and the space to push their ambitions further.
Today, Canvas and Covers operates from modern premises on Commerce Street and has embraced technology that’s reshaping the marine industry.
Using tools like the Proliner 3D measurer, CNC cutting machines, and advanced CAD systems, the team achieves a level of precision that once seemed impossible These innovations have been a game changer, particularly in custom boat decking Brendan is now the only U-Dek designer, fabricator, and installer north of Auckland a distinction that draws customers from across the region Yet, for all the cutting-edge equipment, Brendan insists the heart of the business lies in the basics: quality workmanship, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to getting the job right His focus today is on expanding the U-Dek division, growing production and upholstery services, and fostering the skills of his talented team.
For Brendan, Canvas and Covers a reflection of his lifelong passion for the sea and his belief that great work speaks for itself Whether it’s custom canvas and clears, precision-fit U-Dek decking, or a tailored upholstery project, every job leaves the workshop with the same signature craftsmanship with care

Susan Smillie
is a beautifully written memoir of leaving behind her job and city life to sail solo in her boat, Isean What begins as a response to heartbreak and uncertainty becomes a story of resilience, simplicity, and rediscovering freedom. Smillie is candid about grief and fear, but her reflections on life at sea both the challenges and the quiet joys, make this an inspiring reminder that sometimes contentment is found in letting go and starting again.

Got a question?
Ask a Pirate
I was at Musket Cove the other day, I had my dinghy side-tied front and back along the dinghy dock, to make it easier for me to get in and out, and pulled my outboard engine up to stop it from getting wet...
Someone came along and commented that perhaps I was doing it wrong...! The cheek! How rude... what is going on here?
Yours Mr Ding

I have been based in New Zealand for the past 5 years after cruising on and off for 8 years, having sailed the East Coast of Africa, the West and East Coasts of Australia as well as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. My wife and I live on our boat and are still fully involved in the cruising lifestyle. I am a Licensed Immigration Adviser for New Zealand and, as a yachtie, have a particular interest in helping yachties with their immigration issues

When our own time to stop cruising sadly came to an end and sedentary life replaced our nomadic existence, the idea to continue the dream through our fellow cruisers became our raison-d’être. The first thing that is striking to many new cruisers is the beautiful philosophy, helpfulness and honesty that is seen between boaties. This is the philosophy that we wished to keep at the time of the birth of Nautilus Yacht Management in 2011, and which is will continue to remain ours for as long as we remain in operation.
We are an international business with an active presence mostly through the Pacific, but also Europe, the Caribbean and South East Asia. If we cover a broad territory, we however chose carefully each of our listings and keep a small, boutique-style portfolio of boats carefully curated to suit offshore voyagers and live-aboard. Deliberately keeping our listings number small allows team to devote more time to refine marketing strategy, boost exposure and find the right match for you and for your yacht.

We are a family of four that has been exploring the archipelagos of French Polynesia since April, we have made the tough decision to put our beloved boat (Obelix) on the market and move back to land life at the end of the year The sailing performance is excellent, typically cruising between 7 to 9 knots The interior has been constructed to a high standard with timber joinery throughout
Obelix has sailed to Tahiti from France since 2021 and has had a number of upgrades for blue water cruising and autonomous life afloat The boat has been registered in NZ and imported in French Polynesia and is ready to go cruising, available from November 2025

The Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba, a non-profit, nongovernmental organization founded on May 21, 1992, self-financed, whose objective is to contribute to the promotion and development of recreational boating in Cuba and to establish friendly relations with the international nautical community, extends its warmest greetings to the Cruise News´ readers.
Currently, the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba is the only institution of its kind in Cuba, which has broken the isolation our island has had from the international nautical community since 1960. Today, these friendly ties are extend to around 1,000 institutions in more than 50 countries around the world. Furthermore, to date, more than 3,800 Cubans and citizens of 74 other countries have registered as members of our Yacht Club.

In the 33 years of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba, Commodore Escrich has participated in sailing regattas, fishing tournaments, boat shows, and other nautical events at the invitation of nautical communities in North America: Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Friendship with the international nautical community has been, is, and will continue to be vital to the existence of our Yacht Club, and these ties represents an important support in our fight to uphold the flag of love for the sea and the right of Cubans to enjoy recreational sailing.
For our Yacht Club, it is always an honor and an immense pleasure always offer a warm welcome to members of the international nautical community who visit us.
Thus, without a doubt, dear reader, recreational sailing, through its institutions, has always been a very important way to strengthen the friendly ties between Cuba and the people of the world This has undoubtedly been demonstrated by the commendable work that the Hemingway International Yacht Club
of Cuba has carried out for more than three decades. All of this demonstrates its vocation and commitment to continue strengthening the prestige and image of this Cuban nautical institution as a SANCTUARY of love for the sea and friendship, and a BASTION in the defense and rescue of the rich maritime and nautical history of the Cuban nation
We would greatly appreciate receiving a message of friendship, support and recognition for our Yacht Club, which will strengthen its image and prestige in Cuban society and the international nautical community You can send a message to the Facebook wall Cnih Cuba, to Whatsapp +53 52794979 or to the email yachtclub@cnihmhturcu
