It is great to be finally starting to feel a bit better after my final chemo treatment I have made it back up to my boat in Auckland and have been enjoying getting out and about to catch up with our members and people planning their Pacific adventures in 2026!
This month I will be flying up to Fiji, visiting Vuda, Paradise in Taveuni, Savusavu & Denarau to catch up with the Pacific Rally 2025 participants and hopefully catch some sun and get some time laying by the pool.
Thank you to all the resorts, markets, bars, marinas, villages, marine trades and everyone our rally participants have encountered up in the Islands. We very much appreciate your generous hospitality and taking such great care of everyone.
Welcome to all our international cruisers who are joining us on our Go West to Australia and Sail South to New Zealand rallies. This week they are learning about the ports of entry, marinas and yards on offer in NZ or AU so they can make a start on getting their boats booked in for some upcoming maintenance I know all our rally partner businesses will take great care of them.
We’ll also be keeping them all abreast of the NZ Customs proposed changes to the TIE which we have been working hard on behind the scenes with NZ Marine and our other marine trade colleagues
Biosecurity is another important topic when visiting New Zealand and Australia and so we’ve arranged webinars with the local officials so they can share all the current information, tips on how to prepare their vessels and give our rally participants the opportunity to ask any questions before they set off.
Our rally content also gives some tips on navigating your way through the various different visa options available
Plus we provide all the paperwork, and lots of information about what to see and do when they arrive in New Zealand or Australia as well as support if they have any issues along the way.
We will save you time, money and hassle and you can quickly recoup your rally entry fee by taking advantage of all our inclusions & incredible partner offers.
If you are a sailor who is keen to get some offshore sailing experience, lots of our boats will be looking for crew for the passage back to NZ or Australia at the end of the season, and we’d love to have you on our CrewSeeker database. There are lots of amazing opportunities that come up and it is a great way to get that Bluewater experience on your sailing CV if you are planning on taking your own boat up at some stage in the future
This month I will also be advocating on behalf of yachties when I go to a Heads of Maritime Police Units meeting in Suva at the end of the month This is a fantastic opportunity for me to explain to the local authorities what typical cruisers are up to as they sail around the Pacific, and also learn from them what challenges they face when it comes to cruising yachtes These small nations have huge EEZ’s to patrol when it comes to Maritime Crime and they welcome any confidential reports of things that you might see along the way which look at bit suspicious. You can report to NZ Customs online and they’ll send on to the appropriate local authority
Enjoy this month’s magazine and happy sailing!

When preparing for offshore, skippers typically focus on safety and the first passage but in reality, good preparation is far broader The offshore seminar included subjects that we didn't think too much about, such as communications, provisioning, local culture, water, and local laws. It is packed with information and beautifully delivered The offshore preparation course is a must-do for anyone traveling offshore for the first time. Our offshore experience was made better because of this course as it gave us an accurate idea of what to expect. We can't recommend this course highly enough

FOUNTAINE PAJOT’S ODSEA+ HYBRID ELECTRIC CATAMARANS
HERALDNEWERAOFSUSTAINABLECRUISING
Fountaine Pajot has redefined sustainable cruising with the launch of its innovative ODSea+ hybrid electric system across its sailing catamaran range.

ODSea+ combines cutting-edge hybrid propulsion with renewable energy production to offer an environmentally responsible cruising experience without compromising comfort, autonomy or safety.
Developed entirely in-house by a team of over 70 engineers, ODSea+ is the only solution of its kind fully integrated by a shipyard, delivering unmatched compatibility and performance for Fountaine Pajot sailing catamarans.
Incorporating solar panels, wind turbines and hydro-generators, ODSea+ allows owners to harness renewable energy both at anchor and under sail The integrated solar panels - ranging from 400 to 2,000 W, depending on the model - are designed to blend seamlessly with the catamaran’s structure while delivering consistent power to run all onboard systems.
"This innovative system allows our clients to explore the world’s most pristine destinations in comfort while dramatically reducing their environmental impact.” GREGBOLLER
Dual-propeller hydro-generators deliver up to 1kW per propeller at an average speed of 8 knots, while sternmounted wind turbines offer an additional 600 watts of power generation day or night
Fountaine Pajot has equipped its ODSea+ catamarans with LFP lithium batteries, renowned for their durability, thermal stability and resistance to harsh marine conditions Unlike other battery types, LFP technology does not require complex cooling systems, making it ideally suited to long-range cruising
The electric motors featured in the ODSea+ system are engineered for longevity, reduced maintenance and greater reliability. Even in low battery conditions or strong winds, the system maintains a safe cruising speed of at least 4 knots A centralised console, also developed in-house, manages all energy production and consumption, ensuring renewable sources are always prioritised while offering an intuitive user interface for effortless operation.
Available across five of Fountaine Pajot’s sailing models the New 41, New 44, Elba 45, Aura 51 and Samana 59 ODSea+ empowers owners to cruise with confidence and autonomy, even in remote or protected areas The technology allows for extended stays at anchor without the need for traditional fuel-powered generators, opening the door to a new level of self-sufficiency and environmental stewardship
The Yacht Sales Co., Asia Pacific dealer of Fountaine Pajot, was the first in Fountaine Pajot’s global dealer network to sell yachts fitted with the ODSea+ system to private “live-aboard” owners, including an Aura 51 and an Astrea 42 TYSC have also sold the first ODSea+ Samana 59 that will be delivered in early 2026 to a private buyer in Thailand two major milestones in the adoption of hybrid electric cruising in the AsiaPacific region
Greg Boller, The Yacht Sales Co. General Manager New Yachts, said Fountaine Pajot has set a new benchmark for responsible cruising with ODSea+
"This innovative system allows our clients to explore the world’s most pristine destinations in comfort while dramatically reducing their environmental impact,” Greg said
"ODSea+ marks a significant evolution in eco-friendly yachting, delivering intelligent energy management, powerful hybrid propulsion and a genuine commitment to preserving the oceans we love to explore,” he said
“We are experiencing very strong demand for ODSea+ systems from buyers across the Asia Pacific region who recognise the myriad advantages of combining state-of-the-art hybrid technology and the world’s leading catamaran designs.”

The Fountaine Pajot Aura 51 is just one of the models available with Fountaine Pajot's ODSea+ Hybrid Electric system

Nautilus Yacht Management is the only yacht brokerage in the world built by cruisers for cruisers, offering a range of brokerage types suited to your lifestyle and with commissions tailored to what you need from your broker
When our own time to stop cruising sadly came to an end and sedentary life replaced our nomadic existence, the idea to continue the dream through our fellow cruisers became our raison-d’être The first thing that is striking to many new cruisers is the beautiful philosophy, helpfulness and honesty that is seen between boaties This is the philosophy that we wished to keep at the time of the birth of Nautilus Yacht Management in 2011, and which is will continue to remain ours for as long as we remain in operation
We are an international business with an active presence mostly through the Pacific, but also Europe, the Caribbean and South East Asia If we cover a broad territory, we however chose carefully each of our listings and keep a small, boutique-style portfolio of boats carefully curated to suit offshore voyagers and live-aboard Deliberately keeping our listings number small allows team to devote more time to refine marketing strategy, boost exposure and find the right match for you and for your yacht

Right: It’s all
The realization of the vision to create the contemporary office, warehouse and test facilities is the latest landmark achievement by the company, highlighting VETUS’s longstanding commitment to innovation and product renewal for the benefit of end-users.
Built next to the neighbourhood of Schiedam where founder Willem den Ouden was born, the building has been designed to increase the warehouse space to double the current capacity, helping the company to store, process and ship products efficiently It will also offer better facilities to showcase products and conduct (inwater) tests with dedicated mooring spaces for VETUS demo boats
The building features a rooftop solar panel array, generating much of its own energy For the remaining energy requirement, the company uses

dedicated wind and hydro energy, achieving a carbon neutral footprint
“The new building and our innovations will bring significant benefits, enhancing efficiency, boosting employee satisfaction even further and positioning us closer to our end customers.”
MARCELBORSHOOM
The office move is part of VETUS’s wider long-term strategy for growth and development, which has seen the increase of its global presence through the opening of new branch offices, as well as multiple regional team expansions, all of which have been driven by the significant increase in sales.

To facilitate the use of its technology by more boaters, VETUS focuses on collaborating with leading partners to deliver system integration with outboard engines, for single engine configurations, as well as multi-engine vessels This offers significant benefits when manoeuvring or docking by combining VETUS thrusters with joystick piloting solutions
Key partnerships are already in place with Mercury Marine®, for its Mercury Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO), and Yamaha, connecting the BOW PRO thruster range to the Helm Master® EX control system
This year, VETUS added a collaboration with Honda Marine and Ultraflex to introduce a cutting-edge solution to transform the boating experience by connecting engine, steering and a VETUS BOW PRO thruster system with a simple control through a joystick.
To offer a superior manoeuvring and docking solution for single and twin inboard engine installations, VETUS works with YANMAR The integration pairs the YANMAR JC20A Inboard Joystick Control System with the VETUS BOW PRO bow and stern thrusters for easy and intuitive joystick control, even in challenging conditions

The journey from New Zealand or Australia to the Islands isn’t just a weather shift, it’s a mindset change. Right now, 2026 rally cruisers are deep in prep mode: refitting hulls, replacing rigging, brushing up on nav skills, sorting out provisioning systems, and learning what customs paperwork each island will want. But when it comes to personal gear? It’s still common to hear, "My old hiking jacket will do" or "I'll grab something before departure from the marina shop."
Whilst that’s fine, we just want to remind you that even though you might be sailing toward the tropics, your first 3-5 days at sea will likely be cold, wet, and relentless. It’s not the time to find out your jacket isn’t actually waterproof or your clothes don’t dry overnight. The right gear won’t just keep you comfortable, it’ll help you adapt when that weather window doesn’t go quite as planned. And it can happen! We have broken it down for you to give a bit more of an understanding what type of gear will work best in what situations, so you can make the decision on what you will need for your voyage.

Whether you’re island-hopping up the east coast or punching into a 30-knot tradewind swell offshore, knowing what gear works where is everything Henri-Lloyd’s outerwear is broken down into performance categories based on use and weather resistance

After
I wore an Elite jacket on my trip from NZ to Fiji, I can’t see myself wearing my old jacket on a boat again... I have a new favourite.”
WARRENHASLILP,CEOOFTHECHANDLERY
1. ELITE RANGE – Ocean/Offshore
This is the top-tier option for serious offshore legs. Engineered with 3-layer DRI PRO fabric that’s fully waterproof (20k Waterproofness), ultra-breathable, and reinforced for high abrasion the Elite Jacket and Hi-Fits are the kind of kit you wear when the squall line hits and you’re 400 miles from land
Use it: For offshore legs from NZ/AUS to the tropics, especially when heading through colder waters or passagemaking in tough conditions.
“Even though Elite is for serious offshore sailing and you would expect a bulk, heavy canvas type jacket that limits your movement, it is surprisingly light and the more it’s used, the softer and more comfortable it gets.
2. COASTAL RANGE – Inshore/Coastal and Offshore/Coastal
Built with 2-layer DRI PRO fabric (15k Waterproofness), this range is perfect for coastal and inshore sailing Less heavy-duty than Elite, but still fully waterproof with seam taping, storm flaps (Biscay) or waterproof zips (Sail), and reinforced areas The Biscay jacket offers classic offshore styling with high collar protection, while the Sail jacket is more relaxed and lighter, ideal for warm inshore hops or shore wear.
Use it: For coastal cruising, evening watch shifts in shoulder seasons, or tropical rain protection. Biscay will handle the offshore leg from NZ/AUS to the tropics too

3. BREEZE SERIES – Breeze & Cool Breeze
Lightweight, packable, and ideal for warm weather squalls Made with DRI SHELL (10k waterproofness), Breeze gear works as a versatile outer layer. You can choose between Breeze with mesh lining, Cool Breeze with fleece lining and a hood, or even Breeze Gilet, just to keep the wind off the core
Use it: For rainy island days, dinghy rides to shore, or cool mornings with tropical humidity building

4. DYNAMIC RANGE – For Keelboats, Active Cruisers, and Serious Racers
This range was built for performance sailing, but many cruisers are now turning to it for comfort, stretch, and breathability. 4-way stretch, super lightweight, and still fully waterproof (20k waterproofness, just like Elite)
Dynamic Lite Jackets, Sailing Jackets, Smocks, Shorts, Salopettes - yes, they are technical, but they also look great in the black, navy and titanium colours, with clever reflective elements for safety, and they move with your body, are super lightweight and keep you dry What more can you ask for?
Use it: When you’re trimming sails in the heat, kayaking, paddleboarding, or just want serious movement without bulk
Far left: Women’s Biscay Jacket
Left: Elite Jacket
Bottom: Men’s Biscay Jacket
“I wore my normal shorts most of the way but really wished I had the Dynamic Shorts at the time because they would’ve handled the wet cockpit and constant movement better than anything else.”
WARRENHASLILP
SO WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK?
Here’s what we recommend:
One serious offshore jacket + hi-fits (Elite Jacket and Hi-fits or Biscay and Coastal Hi-Fit depending on your trip)
One lightweight jacket for the tropics (Breeze or Dynamic Lite)
1–2 mid layers for layering early in the trip (Smart-Therm or an Aktiv Stretch)
3–5 Dri-Fast or Dynamic Tees (for those cruising days, time on boat, exploring the islands)
1–2 polos for town days
2-3 pairs of Explorer shorts or Dynamic shorts
Base layers for colder nights on passage
Drybag (Henri-Lloyd backpack option available)
Cap, sunnies, and reef-safe
sunscreen
THE GOAL
Less bulk, more performance, and enough to stay fresh and looking good. Choose pieces that layer, breathe, and pack down, because space is limited, and comfort is non-negotiable.
GEAR AS USED BY WARREN OPUA, NZ TO VUDA, FIJI

LEAVING NZ
Day and Night | NTS Akiv Warm Top and Pants as base layer + Smart Therm midlayer + Elite jacket and hi-fit
MID PASSAGE
Days | NTS Aktiv Warm top and pants as base layer + Aktiv Stretch mid layer + Breeze Jacket or Gilet Nights | same as when leaving NZ
END OF PASSAGE
Days | shorts + Dri-fast polo or drifast long sleeve tee + Breeze Gilet (or jacket if taking on spray or rain) Nights | shorts + Dri-fast long sleeve tee + Elite jacket and hi-fit

Biosecurity, Customs

The Convention on Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) protects plant and animal species that could be threatened by trade. When you sail out across the Pacific, or further afield, one of the best tools you take with you is your knowledge. It keeps you safe, and ensures you have the best time.
Knowledge is also an important tool you use when returning to New Zealand. Knowing the rules around customs and biosecurity is usually pretty good. But the collective knowledge of CITES and what rules apply is not so good Here’s a quick summary, and where to find out more information
What is CITES?
CITES is an international agreement that protects over 40,000 species including all whales, some sharks, all crocodiles and alligators, all orchids, some birds, and a wide range of other plants and animals. To take these, or items made from them, across international borders, you will need a CITES permit or other documentation
The rules still apply if:
• you bought items online or from a retail store
• you are bringing home souvenir items found while beachcombing, hiking or from a market
• the item was farmed, artificially propagated or
comes from a captive breeding facility
• it died naturally or is only part of an animal or plant
• it is a cultural item or a traditional medicine
What are some examples?
Common examples of cultural items include feathers, animal skins, bone carvings, whale tabua, ceremonial clothing or ornaments with animal parts
Traditional medicines often contain multiple ingredients including plant and animal species such as orchid or costus thistle You are responsible for knowing what is included in the ingredients.
Common examples of holiday souvenirs include coral or clam shells found on a beach, an eagle feather found while hiking, bone or tooth necklace bought at a market, or an animal claw gifted to you

You will likely need CITES permits for items to be legally imported if they contain CITES-listed species If the required permits are not with the item on import, the item could be confiscated and you could be fined. Make sure to check first, increase your knowledge, and get a permit if required.
For more information on CITES and permitting, visit www.doc.govt.nz/cites

NETWORKING MARINE INSTRUMENTS: A COMPLETE GUIDE – 01
CHRISHARRIS TWEEDSMARINE
Marine instrument wiring: so you want to connect up your new instruments?
START HERE
Let’s say that you have a basic set of instruments on your boat, and let’s assume that it is a sailing vessel of some sort. You might have a wind instrument with an anemometer (wind speed) and direction transducer at the top of the mast with a display in the cockpit. You may also have a ‘log’ (boat speed), often combined with a depth transducer mounted in or on the hull, and also with a display in the cockpit.
We have a wind instrument that, as a stand-alone device, can only display ‘Apparent Wind Speed’ (AWS) and ‘Apparent Wind Direction’ (AWD) You now want to dig deeper into the performance of your boat and be able to more accurately predict angles and courses, and need to know the ‘True Wind Speed’ (TWS) and ‘True Wind Angle’ (TWA)
Apparent wind angle and speed are what you would feel if you were standing on the deck of the boat True wind is apparent wind compensated for the boat’s speed through the water Therefore, to calculate True Wind, we have to feed the data from the log into the wind instrument; just one reason why we need to network our instruments

Networking

HOW IS THIS ‘NETWORKING’ DONE?
Whilst instruments can be networked wirelessly, it is more commonly done using copper wires, and that is what I am going to cover here.
The information carried over a marine network is encoded into data streams and transmitted in binary format (Ones and Zeros) Generally, the ones and zeros are represented by different voltage levels on the wires, or a wire, connecting the devices. One pair of wires twisted together (a twisted pair) is used in each direction More advanced systems can use a single pair of wires linking many devices, where each device takes turns to transmit information and listens for information from other devices in the periods between transmissions Let’s look at a basic example.
Referring to the top image, let’s assume that one wire in the pair is at 0V (signal ground) and that the other wire is used by the log instrument to send the information The log instrument will send out a stream of codes representing the boat’s speed. It does this by changing the voltage on the signal wire very quickly between 5V and 0V. Circuitry in the wind
instrument decodes the signals coming in, converts them to numbers of the correct format, and crunches the numbers to produce the information required.
The voltages used and the timing of the signals could vary over huge ranges depending on the priorities of the designers; for this reason, many early marine electronics systems could not talk to those made by another manufacturer. This is where ‘standards’ come in
NMEA STANDARDS
Most of the marine electronics industry has adopted a set of standards for these interconnections produced by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) of the USA. Or at least closely aligned with those standards. There are two standards in common use with a third being adopted
NMEA 0183

This standard was launched in 1983 and used twisted pairs to transmit information in one direction only Two pairs are needed for bi-directional communications. This is an older standard that has been somewhat superseded by NMEA 2000; however, it remains dominant in commercial shipping, is simple and robust, and for a small network, cheaper to install than N2k The main features of this standard are:
Devices that transmit are known as talkers
Devices that receive are known as listeners.
Only one talker can be connected to a twisted pair
Multiple listeners can be connected to a single talker
Data transmission speed is usually 4800 Baud (very roughly 4800 characters per second) for navigation data or 38400 Baud for AIS and heading data
Note: Wire colour codes – Whilst there may be a standard colour code somewhere in the NMEA0183 standard, it is not used across manufacturers; therefore, always check the manual that came with your product I have used the colours typically used by Actisense, who are a large manufacturer of NMEA interfacing products
Note: The standard expects that the electrical interface uses the RS-422 standard, which allows up to 10 listeners to be attached to a single talker However, many cheaper devices use RS-232 hardware because it is cheaper and commonly available in computer interfaces RS-232 only allows for one listener to be connected to one talker, in theory. In practice, you can usually get away with up to four listeners
NMEA 0183 connection
Warning – Jargon
NMEA 2000

2000 connection
N2k is a bus network based on the CAN Bus (Controller Area Network) specification, which was originally designed for vehicular use This is a single cable system that consists of a backbone (or trunk) cable. Instruments and devices connect to the backbone at T-connectors via drop cables There is an almost standard system of T-connectors and device connectors The cable, for backbone and drops, contains five conductors. A shield (or drain), a power pair, and a data pair. Power is supplied to the network via a standard T-connector in most cases, although only the two conductors of the power pair are used
The power supplied through the network often also powers smaller instruments and transducers, but larger instruments such as chart plotters generally need a separate supply To further confuse things, some instruments can also power the bus. However, your bus is powered; there must only be one power source
Dive deeper – The electrical interface used in N2k is functionally similar to RS-485, which coincidentally dates back to 1983, just like NMEA 0183
NMEA ONENET
This is the NMEA version of the common Ethernet, which attempts to standardise the protocols used to transmit the type of data aboard. It supports Gigabit Ethernet (currently the common standard) and opens up the potential for better integration of products from different manufacturers for the end user. It could give end users more opportunities to mix and match devices from various manufacturers, such as a RADAR from Simrad on a Raymarine plotter.
However, whilst an exciting development, it took decades for the big names to start using the same type of connector on their N2k networks and reduce the amount of proprietary messages transmitted; don’t hold your breath
SUMMARY
Beginners in marine electronics DIY can be bewildered by all the jargon and acronyms, but by breaking the system down into parts, you should be able to get your head around it all The next article on networking will cover building a simple N2k network and basic testing, if or when it all goes wrong.

3RD ANNUAL MUSKET COVE WINGFOIL REGATTA

Cruising Wingfoilers get together for fun regatta at Musket Cove.
It seems almost every boat cruising Pacific has wingfoiling equipment on board these days. Easy to stow and launch from almost any boat, it’s become the perfect way to stay active and enjoy the Pacific’s steady trade winds.
No wonder then that the famously informal Musket Cove Wingfoil Regatta is becoming more popular each year. The third instalment will feature two days of racing between August 13 and 18 (racing will run on the best or earliest good wind days during the waiting period).
Organiser Andrew Mitchell says the emphasis is on fun, challenging yourself to go around a few marks, and enjoying some great social banter afterwards.
“Organisation is pretty minimal”, says Mitchell “We lay a few marks, fire a few start hooters and record the finishing order. It’s basic but everyone seems to love it”
Divisions are ‘social’ for competent riders and ‘very social’ for those early on in their foiling journey. A highlight for the social fleet is ‘The Reefer’, a 7-mile long distance dash around Nuku Reef

BOAT MAINTENANCE AND REFIT
ON THE QUEENSLAND COAST
EXCERPT FROM ‘CRUISING THE QUEENSLAND COAST”
For yachts crossing the Pacific and arriving in Australia, Queensland has 26 boatyards accessible to masted vessels For yachts coming up from southern states, many choose to haul out or even have a full refit done in Queensland Below you will find a comprehensive table of these boatyards.
SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND
At the southern end of the state, the Gold Coast Marine Precinct was established 30 years ago
It is now a major boat and yacht manufacturing and refit centre. Riviera, Maritimo and Quintrex are major manufacturers Gold Coast City Marina and The Boat Works are the two yards. They are neighbours, with only 500m separating their yards, with the tradespeople and suppliers spread across both. There are hundreds of suppliers and contractors servicing them Many yacht equipment suppliers also have their Australian distributors based there. If you haul out there, you can get pretty much anything done.
I just had my yacht out for a 15-year refit there I had the hull and keel sandblasted, and then removed the keel to inspect the bolts and reseal the
hull-keel join. I hauled out at Gold Coast City Marina and used Harbourforce (Jeremy) for sand blasting and AME (Kurt) as the shipwright While everyone is busy, these yards are not destinations like other places up the coast Everyone is here for work, and for a limited time, so the contractors tend to make themselves available and get it done They work with all sizes of yachts, with a lot of cruisers hauling out there. They also do large motor yachts with each having a 300t Travelift
Brisbane has 2 big boatyards, The Yard and Rivergate They tend to focus on larger yachts The Yard has a 600t lift and Rivergate a 300t. Rivergate focuses on international yachts.

Harbourforce sand blasting of Curlew Escape, Gold Coast Marina Precinct
FURTHER NORTH
Outside of the Gold Coast and Brisbane, the boatyards tend to be smaller and focused on providing services to yachts, not super yachts. If you are hauling out, ensure the yard’s lift can handle your yacht and that there are trades you need who are available It is a very good idea to line up your trades first before making your haul-out booking In some cases, trades will fly in to do your job, so lead times can be large.
For example, while we were in Cairns last June, I serviced the engine. As we cruised around the Low Islets and the islands, I thought the engine sounded a bit different I called Belcher Diesel Service in Townsville and lined up a check for two weeks later It turned out the air filter had perished No harm done.

Earlier on the same trip, the mast track had partially pulled out of the mast We’d had 25-30 knots behind us for two weeks and spent most of the time goose-winged It failed just as we arrived at Magnetic Island. The rivets were Monel, but it looked like they had used the short rather than long ones, and they had finally pulled out. I decided to cut threads and replace the failed rivets with bolts These were hard to get locally I called Muirs in Manly, my home chandlery and also Marlin Marine. Both had them, so I had some shipped to Townsville I also made arrangements for Andrew, the rigger at Marlin Marine, to buy a new track. In the end, I managed to straighten the track and
reattach it. I lined Andrew up to inspect my repair when we got back to Airlie a few months later He ended up doing it on his day off.
We have done 9 Hamilton Race Weeks, and there are around 15 collisions each race. In 2019, it was our turn; we got hit by a catamaran (their fault and their insurance) Tom Doland from Whitsunday Marine Management, the shipwrights based at the Hamilton Island Marina, were excellent He patched us up that afternoon, and we were racing again the next day.
In our experience, the tradespeople in the regions have been very helpful.
2 5t blocks securing the yacht after mast removal GCCM

The boys from AME resealing the keel before reattachment
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
Only some yards allow sand blasting These are indicated on the list below Some yards require the mast to be removed before taking your keel off If the mast does not need to come off, this is an added expense. For example, MBTBC Marina, my home marina, does not allow sand blasting RQYS allows sandblasting but does not have facilities to secure yachts after the keel has been removed GCCM have 25 tonne blocks and routinely does this, the reason I went there in the end. They also have a keel trench, although I didn’t use it.
If you are re-rigging, you should line up a rigger months in advance.
Some riggers require you to take the mast off Marlin Marine in Airlie Beach will re-rig with the mast attached They support the mast with spectra rigging while they take the standing rigging away This is a big saving The Gold Coast riggers wanted the mast off, so 5 years ago we re-rigged in Airlie Beach. Both marinas there are Ok with this We were in the Port of Airlie Marina
I have also been quoted a waiting time of 2 months for a Volvo service A few months before hauling out at GCCM, I lined up Seatech to look at an oil leak from where I had installed a new water pump a few years ago It turns out their trick is to use J-B Weld Gasket Maker and Sealant instead of a new gasket
The theme is that there is a widespread shortage of tradespeople. Jai from Seatech said he could work every day and still not catch up Kurt from AME, who did all the tricky stuff on my keel, often does work 7 days a week and did so while I was hauled out In my opinion, the shortage is caused by two things: the retirement of the large cohort of baby boomers tradespeople, coinciding with a large increase in yacht ownership in Australia, particularly Queensland Queensland has more boat registrations than any other state in Australia, yet it is the third most populous state
Whatever the reason, the shortage is real. Along with scheduling trades well in advance, my main response has been to do as much as I can myself I am not
sure where I lie on the spectrum of yachting DIYers, but I do vastly more these days than I did when I first bought the yacht So I have become a jack of all trades. I even did most of the keel removal once Kurt showed me how to do it The Plexus glue that Bavaria use on their keel has a 5,500 PSI tensile strength. It has to be cut away, so you need the longest multitool blades you can get (eg Makita Starlock Max 80mm), plus a variety of thin, flexible saws and wedges It took me 3 days of careful work. They have removed 5 keels this year so far, but mine, because of the Plexus, was the hardest
I have found that most of the trades appreciate you doing the things you can, which minimises their work The exception, perhaps, is marine electricians. Daine from Electech in Brisbane has told me he much prefers fixing a problem directly rather than having an owner muddy the waters.
However, sometimes you don’t have the luxury. Most of my electrical and electronics problems seem to happen while I am away cruising So I diagnose myself as much as possible. Josh and Minh in Raymarine support in Sydney are brilliant at working with you to f ix problems And Electech find time to respond to text messages with suggestions
Something to watch out for is yacht club boatyards that have maximum hardstand times before penalty rates
apply Firstly, visitors pay a higher price They usually have a price for an initial period, often a week or two and then the prices go up and eventually end in a penalty rate of double the first week's rate. This is designed to get boats in and out fast Fine for antifouling or minor works, but not great if you have substantial work to do.

BREAKDOWN TOWING
The rescue services in Queensland are transitioning from two volunteer-based, communityfunded organisations, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard and Voluntary Marine Rescue, to a single Marine Rescue Queensland, still volunteer-based, but under the umbrella of the Queensland Police and publicly funded
Along with rescue, they also do breakdown towing The way it has worked is you join your local Coast
Hamilton Island Marina and Boatyard
Guard or VMR and they provide breakdown towing, within geographic limits If you join Coast Guard, you are covered by all Coast Guards, but for VMR it is only if the clubs have reciprocal arrangements. These tend to be with the adjacent VMR
This has been a frustrating experience for cruisers, as you need many subscriptions to have full coverage Without coverage, you will be charged a towing fee It is distance-based and can easily run into the thousands
Marine Rescue Queensland currently has 11 rescue units It is expected to take another few years until all the existing VMR and Coast Guard units have been folded in
The service is currently saying there is no charge for rescue towing and no specified limits, although they do not do salvage I think that they will eventually end up applying some limits.
All services will typically tow you to the nearest marina or boat yard.

BOATYARDS IN QUEENSLAND
This is a list of mast unimpeded yards. Government and large commercial yards are not included

Greg Luck is the author of Cruising the Queensland Coast, a guide for yachts
The third edition was published in 2024 and provides up-to-date information on the 13 coasts from the Gold Coast to Lizard Island, including anchorages, public moorings, public pontoons, marinas, weather patterns and much more It is available in eBook and print formats

Q&A
WITH CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW
DEAR CAPTAIN JACK
I put my laundry in the machines at the marina recently and then headed off to Cardos for a much needed Mojito or two.
When I returned a couple of hours later, I found that there was a big queue of people crowding up the laundry area and someone had their hands in my washing machine pulling my knickerbockers out and dumping them on the bench!
I mean - how rude is that?!?! Handling my underwear. How dare they...!
