5 Places on Hilton Head for the Nature Lover.

Want an authentic Hilton Head ecological experience? Don't miss out on these 5 must-see spots.

Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Pinckney Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, SC, attracts over a quarter of a million visitors each year. This easily accessible island offers a range of wildlife-dependent activities, including hiking, biking, and wildlife watching. If you're a fan of fishing, you ll be happy to know that saltwater fishing is permitted in the surrounding waters. And for those interested in hunting, there is an annual one-day deer hunt held in the fall.

The Refuge offers a variety of opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors from sunrise to sunset. You can hike, bicycle, observe wildlife, take pictures or go saltwater fishing.

Pinckney Island is a crucial stop along the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory birds each year. This sanctuary is not only a haven for these feathered travelers, but also serves as a rookery for colonial wading birds like ibis, egrets, and herons. In addition to protecting birds and other wildlife from disturbance, a "no dogs" policy is in place. www.fws.gov/refuge/pinckney-island.

Jarvis Creek Park

Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas.

There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of allgators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome. www. hiltonheadislandsc.gov/parks/JarvisCreek

In the summer you will be enchanted by the region’s only native butter y enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butteries. n the winter you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April. www.coastaldiscovery.org

HOROSCOPE SEPTEMBER

ARIES Courage is your shield this month, Aries! But expect some introspection too. Don’t bottle up your emotions. Be honest about what (or who) no longer serves you. Romance may bring surprises. Protect your time and energy! Breathe deep and claim your peace!

TAURUS Some inner work could be in store, Taurus. Embrace it! The quiet will give you solace, allow yourself to listen. If you see some challenges mid-month, practice patience, especially in relationships or when it comes to money. nvest in yourself, find your balance and lean on your loved ones. You are stronger than this moment.

GEMINI You’re carrying a lot, Gemini! But you don’t have to do it alone. Drop what’s draining you and double down on what fuels you. Mental clarity comes with rest, so make room for it. Reach out and rely on your peoples.

CANCER

Craving deeper connection? Take a chance, reach out! But don’t let the needs of others weigh you down. Let go of what’s holding you back. Refocus on yourself: your habits, your healing, your happiness.

LEO What lights you up, Leo? Lean into it. This is your time. Whether it’s romance, a new book, or a spontaneous weekend trip, say yes. Your intuition is strong, trust it. Give generously to those you love, but not at the expense of your own goals and growth.

VIRGO Expect positive momentum and a chance to shed the old this September. Shake off the narrative that no longer serves you, step into this new best version of yourself. Take care of your body and take care of your dreams. Volunteer or nurture others if it fills your cup, but don’t pour out your energy when it’s wasted.

LIBRA The beauty and balance you’re craving is on its way! But it starts within… Give your space (and your mind) a decluttering. The eclipse this month could stir some restless energy, use it for good. The more you move your body, the clearer your mind will be.

SCORPIO Breathe deep, Scorpio. Some old baggage may need kicked out. Now could be the time to release a long-held grudge or finally speak the truth. Transformation isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. Stay active and clear-headed.

SAGITTARIUS A fresh sense of purpose is forming. Say yes to a new opportunity, especially in your career or community leadership. Be mindful not to overextend! Keep your health top of mind and use your fire to inspire, not exhaust.

CAPRICORN Expect a call to more purpose this September, Capricorn! The work you’ve put in is about to pay off. When new responsibilities arise, just prioritize. Look for positive ways to alleviate your stress and give yourself grace! This is a season for patience, not perfection.

AQUARIUS The understanding you’ve been praying for is coming! But only if you slow down long enough to receive it. Your relationships could feel intense or confusing as this insight draws near, but use this time to pause and re ect. Accept the criticism, but like a grain of salt. Focus on you and your clarity. Spend time outdoors and get your body moving.

PISCES This month’s eclipse may seem far removed, but the pressure and changes in the atmosphere could genuinely impact your calm and your sense of wellbeing. Be aware of it, but don’t let it control you. If it allows an emotional release, embrace it. It’s no different than a storm or barometric pressure impacting your body. If it can help, use it! If not, lose it.

A Day on ~ the ~ Water

Life on Hilton Head Island revolves around the water, and few places offer so many opportunities to enjoy this liquid asset. From Broad Creek to the Calibogue Sound, the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, freshwater lagoons to brackish backwaters, you’re just moments away from a great day on the water.

Launch & Land

A perfect day on the water begins and ends at any of the Island’s many marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours, as well as signature restaurants, shopping and entertainment. Explore the famous candy-striped Lighthouse in Harbour Town, the Mediterranean charm of Shelter Cove Harbour, the New England-style fishing village of South Beach Marina, the Key West atmosphere of Palmetto Bay Marina and the hidden charms of Broad Creek Marina, Skull Creek Marina and Hilton Head Harbor.

Bike the Beach

Hilton Head Island’s 12 miles of hardpacked, white-sand beaches provide the perfect playground for any age, at any time of year. Rent a beach cruiser to explore the strand at your own pace. Locals know that low tide is the perfect time to ride along the beach, when the sand is flat and hard-packed.

Dolphin Days

Have you ever seen Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin in the wild? Don't miss the chance to take a local dolphin tour, where you'll see dolphin in their natural habitat and learn about their amazing behavior. A dolphin tour offers a family-friendly way to spend the day out on the water and to see these incredible mammals in action.

Reel Fun

Bait your hook and head out for a day of deep sea, inshore or shark fishing with experienced boat captains who know the secret spots. Or drop a line into the nearest lagoon, cast a shrimp net or try surf fishing on the beach to see what you can catch (and release!) this season.

Sail Away

Let the wind fill your sails as you salute the sunset on a Happy Hour Cruise, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island, spend a few hours or all day sightseeing, sign up for sailing lessons or rent a boat to play your way.

Go Wild

A natural setting for adventure, discover the wild side of the Island and the amazing array of animals that call it home. Enjoy a shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure or birdwatching tour to view the Island’s wild inhabitants.

Paddle Time

Experience the Island’s wildlife up close on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments.

Fly High

Get an unforgettable bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry on a helicopter ride, or spend a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at water’s edge. Either way, you'll enjoy an amazing view of the Island and all its beauty.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

PUTTING Thoughts and Fundamentals

Improving your Putt will Improve your Golf Game

Want to improve your golf? Take advice from the best! Jack Nicklaus said if you learn to putt correctly your driver will improve.

The reason is simple. When you make a putt, you leave the green with confidence. It can also rescue a bad drive or a wide iron shot. Here are my thoughts on putting and fundamentals.

1. Fundamentals make putting more fun — Learning grip, stance, posture, alignment and how a proper stroke feels will accelerate your game.

2. Practice putting with your eyes closed — It will help you feel/learn correct mechanics. When I learned keyboarding skills (typing) our instructor made us practice with our eyes closed. Yes, we made mistakes, but we learned to use the keyboard while watching the screen, not our fingers.

3. Watch the target, not the ball — Look down the road when you drive. Look at the catcher when you throw. It’s the same when hitting a putt.

4. Read (Look at) the green from different perspectives — Measure your green from

different angles. Look at the slope from each side, the line between the ball and hole and from the green’s lowest point so the slope is obvious.

5. Read the green with all your senses — Is the grass dry or damp? Soft or hard? What color is the grass? Shiny grass means the ball rolls faster, slower on dark grass. But test with your eyes and feet! Feeling the grass or ground with your hands is not allowed.

6. Toss a ball to read the putt — For real! Toss/roll a golf ball nice and smooth, almost like bowling. The movement improves your feel for distance and direction. Master that physical toss and soon you can visualize the ball rolling along the slope and dropping into the hole.

7. Love to putt — Take a friend, have fun and be social.

Want to improve your putt? Come see me or any of the Golf Professionals at Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy.

Living Fossils of the Lowcountry: Discovering the Atlantic Sturgeon

If you’ve ever caught a glimpse of a massive fish breaching the surface of a quiet Lowcountry creek, you may have witnessed one of the region’s most ancient inhabitants: the Atlantic sturgeon. These remarkable fish have been around since the Late Cretaceous period, roughly 100 million years ago, earning them the title of “living fossils.” Their lineage stretches back even further, with ancestors dating over 170 million years. Found in the deep waters and saltmarshes of South Carolina’s coast, Atlantic sturgeon are a living connection to Earth’s prehistoric past. Once highly valued by Native American communities for their meat and eggs, these gentle giants still inspire awe today as they crest our tidal waters, offering a rare, modern-day encounter with the age of dinosaurs.

With their armored bodies and prehistoric features, Atlantic sturgeon are unmistakable. Instead of scales, they have five rows of bony plates called scutes that run along their sides and back, providing protection as they move through rivers and coastal waters. Their long, shark-like tails add to their primeval appearance. A protruding snout and four sensitive barbels help them detect prey along the seafloor, where they use their toothless, downward-facing mouths to vacuum up food. These slow-growing giants can live up to 60 years and reach impressive sizes, with some measuring over 14 feet long and weighing as much as 800 pounds.

Atlantic sturgeon spend much of their lives near the bottom, sticking to rivers and nearshore waters where they feed and migrate. As bottom feeders, they forage for shrimp, worms, mollusks, and small fish living in the sediment. Their life cycle begins in freshwater, with spawning typically taking place in late summer or fall. In South Carolina, spawning

Instead of scales, they have five rows of bony plates called scutes

has been documented in rivers like the Pee Dee, Edisto, Combahee, Savannah, and possibly the Waccamaw. After hatching, larvae drift downstream to brackish estuaries, where they may remain for up to five years before heading out to sea. Tagging studies show that juveniles travel widely and often intermingle with fish from other river systems, highlighting the sturgeon’s broad range and resilience.

Beyond their ecological role, Atlantic sturgeon have deep cultural and historical significance. Indigenous tribes along the Atlantic coast have harvested them for over 4,000 years, long before the arrival of Europeans. In fact, sturgeon are credited with helping sustain the Jamestown colony in 1607, serving as a critical food source during its most difficult months. Centuries later, their highly prized roe ignited the “Black Gold Rush” of the late 1800s, when caviar fever swept across the eastern United States. But this high demand, combined with habitat degradation, fishing gear entanglement, and vessel strikes, has taken a toll.

Atlantic sturgeon are more than just ancient fish; they’re vital indicators of river health, relying on clean, unpolluted waters to spawn and survive. Their presence reflects the overall well-being of our aquatic ecosystems, making their protection a priority not only for biodiversity, but for the health of our rivers as a whole. Today, all five U.S. Atlantic sturgeon populations are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. If you encounter a sturgeon while fishing, remember to keep the fish in the water and carefully remove the hook or cut the line for a safe release. If handling is necessary, always use wet hands to protect their delicate skin. Small actions like these can help ensure that they continue to thrive for generations to come.

The Changing View of the Lowcountry Salt Marsh

trap sediment and provide homes and shelters for other living things.

The geological history of the Lowcountry has made it so that we have no naturally occurring rocks. Loose sediment comes in off of the ocean or down from the mountains, and it is the job of Spartina to hold on to it and, in turn, build new land and prevent existing land from washing out to sea.

irst time visitors to Hilton Head get quite a surprise when they first encounter our nearshore waterways.

Unlike most coastal areas, there is no crisp divide between land and water. Instead, our creeks and rivers are flanked by miles of tidal salt marsh. In fact, the states of Georgia and South Carolina are home to more area of salt marsh than the rest of the United States combined!

Life in the salt marsh is constantly changing, depending on the tide.

All of the plants and animals that live there are uniquely adapted to take advantage of the rising and falling waters. The tide is caused by the gravitational force of the moon. It is a complex series of factors that produces, on most days, two high and two low tides per day. The tide cycle, from low to high, is about six hours and fifteen minutes; as a result, the highs and lows are approximately an hour later each day. In our area, the difference between high and low tide is anywhere from6 to 12 feet, depending on the moon phase.

The most important species in the salt marsh is the most obvious one, the bright green grass that outlines the edges of waterways. This is Spartina grass, and it forms an intricate web of spaces that

One of the animals that is heavily dependent on the Spartina grass is the American oyster. These bivalves anchor themselves to the thick crochet of Spartina roots and there they spend their entire lives. While all oysters on the East Coast of the United States are the same species, those in the Lowcountry are uniquely adapted to our tidal environment. At high tide they are underwater, constantly feeding by filtering nutrients out of the water. As the tide recedes, they are exposed to the air, and often extreme temperatures. Their soft bodies survive being out of the water by tightly closing their shell.

Oysters don’t swim, or bite, but their razor sharp shells make them the most dangerous animal in our waters. For some smaller animals, the nooks and crannies between the oysters offer great protection from the multitude of predators hunting them. The Spartina grass also provides these safe spaces and, thanks to all these great hiding places, the salt marsh is the preferred spot for juvenile fish and shellfish to start their lives. In fact, about 94% of the fish that we enjoy locally started their lives in the salt marsh.

The scenery of the salt marsh is always changing. At high tide, the tops of the grass and the water are all you see. At low tide, another universe of oysters, crabs, mud, Spartina roots and fishing birds comes to life. Get up close and experience it for yourself on a boat, kayak or paddleboard tour!

The Strike of the Speckled Seatrout

Armed with a set of fangs that would make any snake or vampire jealous, a voracious appetite and an explosive strike, the speckled seatrout ranks in the top three inshore game fish, along with flounder and red drum. Often attacking prey their own size, the strike of the seatrout is hard to beat. One nice “gator” trout I caught last winter almost took the rod out of my hands when he struck the plastic bait I tossed near the bank. My intentions were to let it sink a minute, so I had relaxed my grip on the rod and certainly didn’t expect the force of the trout’s attack. The fish weighed six pounds.

While after a cold winter the trout population sometimes dips, it seems like the past mild winter holds promise of booming schools of trout this season. In September, large schools of 13-inch fish were plentiful and with the trout’s appetite they should be much larger as winter passes. Some of their favorite prey is finger mullet, mud minnows and shrimp.

While the shrimp are plentiful in the creeks, I prefer to use them live. As the

water temperature drops and the shrimp leave, I switch to artificial baits – soft plastics with paddle tails or screw tails – and scented plastics like the Gulp products, or hard lures like the Mirrolure or Mighty Mike. I have caught them on a chunk of dead mullet on the bottom while fishing for redfish, but the other methods should produce better numbers of fish.

If using live bait – finger mullet, shrimp or mud minnow – a popping cork with three foot of leader and a 2/0 or 3/0 circle or kahle hook will produce good results. Small live menhaden are also favorite food for the voracious trout. Working the popping cork vigorously will increase your strikes, because while some fish spook easily, the trout is fearless. Long ago we used to troll the grass edge of the creeks and the motor never bothered them.

Sleek and silvery iridescence covered with spots, the speckled sea trout is a beautiful, hard striking, tough fighting fish that provides an angling experience that is hard to beat. When taken to the table the delicious, flaky flesh is the icing on the cake!

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.

Thousands of Years Ago

Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

1520s

Conquistadors explored the area.

1663

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.
