RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

THE BACKSWING
What starts the golf swing? The hands, the wrist or arms, the shoulders or something else?
To get to the answer you’ve got more questions to address. Which is stronger, your hands or shoulders? Which muscles are slow twitch muscles and which are fast twitch?
Golf is a game of slow twitch, strong muscles (the shoulders, hips and core) and momentum. Using those strong slow twitch muscles, the rotation of your shoulders and hips for power and the heavy momentum of the clubhead to drive the ball is key to a great game of golf.
The two major moves in golf are the backswing, using the shoulders and the downswing using the hips. The torque created in the backswing rotation is released when the hips rotate back through. Everything else follows.
Golfers who have been instructed correctly start the swing with the shoulders and the arms, wrist, hands and hips respond to that motion.
A Hall of Fame baseball pitcher and excellent golfer put it this way, “If you want a

long baseball career turn your shoulders and if you want a short career throw with your arms.”
He said golf is the same, “Turn your shoulders in the backswing and begin the downswing with your lower body and you will reach your potential in golf.”
One of my favorite pastimes is teaching (or re-programming) golfers to turn the shoulders back and then release the swing at full speed, like a stretched rubber band snapping back. The move increases power, distance and with practice, accuracy too.

FALL FISHING
By Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters
The raucous cry of the marsh hen seems to carry on the cooler breeze and, as the wind brushes my face, I can’t help but smile. After all, it signals my favorite time of year: the fall season.
Fall is a special time here in the Lowcountry for many reasons. he weather is cooler, the crowds thin and the bull redfish swarm inshore waters. The bulls, from 20 pounds up to the 50-pound mark, are here or offshore all year, but this time of year they come close in big numbers, with catches of 20 or more fish in a trip not uncommon.
he strength of these fish is incredible, rivaling any other fish its si e, short of an amberjack or tuna. usually fish heavy spinning reels with 50-pound braid and, even with a heavy drag, they will strip line off at an alarming pace – and do it several times in a battle. have fished lighter tackle, but the lengthy battle takes a toll on these big fish and they must be released. he law re uires that redfish over 23 inches must be returned to the water.
he smaller redfish also invade the creeks this time of year, offering the best light tackle sport available. Live or dead shrimp, cut mullet and menhaden are all favorite baits when fishing inshore. he slot, or keeper si e, is 1 to 23 inches. By South Carolina law, you may keep three per person.
Redfish are not only a blast to catch, but they are delicious to eat as well. Before Chef Paul Prudhomme introduced blackened redfish, these fish were locally known as spot tail bass or puppy drum. Their proper name is red drum.
The coloration is usually a deep burnt orange or copper across the back, with a single spot at the base of the tail. Some fish have multiple spots from the tail to the middle of the fish. A strong, broad tail and thick shoulders give the redfish all the horsepower it needs to make your day.
Armed with a set of fangs that would make any snake or vampire jealous, a voracious appetite and an e plosive strike, the speckled seatrout ranks in the top three inshore gamefish, along with flounder and red drum.
One nice gator trout caught last winter almost took the rod out of my hands when he struck the plastic bait I had tossed near the bank. My intentions were to let it sink a minute, so had rela ed my grip on the rod and didn t e pect the force of the si -pound trout s attack.
After a cold winter, the trout population sometimes dips, but the mild past winter holds the promise of booming
schools of trout for the fall. Last month, large schools of 13-inch fish were plentiful. And, with the trout s appetite, they should be much larger in the coming months.
Some of the trout’s favorite prey is finger mullet, mud minnows and shrimp. One trout I cleaned recently had an eel in his stomach that was as long as the fish.
While the shrimp are plentiful in the creeks, I prefer to use them live. As the water temperature drops and the shrimp leave, switch to artificial baits, soft plastics with paddle tails or screw tails with scented plastics, like the Gulp products, or hard lures like the Mirrolure or Mighty Mike. I’ve caught trout on a chunk of dead mullet on the bottom while fishing for redfish, but the other methods should produce better numbers of fish.
f using a live bait finger mullet — shrimp or mud minnow — a popping cork with a three-foot leader and a 2 0 or 3 0 circle or kahle hook will produce good results. Working the popping cork vigorously will increase your strikes. here some fish spook easily, the trout is fearless. Long ago, we used to troll the grass edge of the creeks, and the motor never bothered them.
Easily identified by its sleek, silvery iridescence covered with spots, the speckled sea trout is a beautiful, hard- striking, tough-fighting fish, providing an angling e perience that’s hard to beat. When taken to the table, the delicious, white flaky flesh is the proverbial icing on the cake!
I’m often surprised that many of my summer clients remark that they also come to Hilton Head in the fall or winter, but never think about fishing then. Reservations are much easier to come by, and the fishing is fantastic.

SAILING INTO Hilton Head’s Legacy
Sailing remains one of the best ways to experience the Lowcountry waters
Article and photo by Master Naturalist, Kathleen McMenamin,Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation at the Island Recreation Center
From its very discovery, sailing has been at the heart of Hilton Head Island’s story. Spanish sailors first documented the island in 1526 as they explored the East Coast, and for decades afterward, both the French and Spanish navigated and contested these local waters. By the late 1580s, however, British influence began to take hold, pushing the Spanish presence away. It wasn’t until 1663 that William Hilton, sailing into the Port Royal Sound on an exploration voyage, spotted the striking headlands that marked the island’s shore. Captivated by its beauty, he recorded the sweet water, towering trees, and clear, fresh air in his notes, and he gave the island his name, Hilton Head.
Generations later, sailing remains one of the best ways to experience the Lowcountry waters, offering adventure with a light environmental footprint and appeal for all ages. Beyond recreation, sailing today stands out as both a sustainable sport and a meaningful teacher. Powered by the wind, it offers an eco-friendly way to enjoy the water while reminding us to protect the natural world so the tradition can endure for generations. For young sailors especially, the lessons go far beyond the boat. Sailing builds teamwork, focus, and awareness, while also encouraging mindfulness and resilience. Time on the water not only boosts physical health and balance but also nurtures emotional well-being and cognitive growth. For many, the ocean becomes more than just a playground. It’s a symbol of life’s challenges and possibilities, inspiring confidence and
curiosity in those bold enough to set sail.
The steady breezes, warm waters, and favorable wind conditions make Hilton Head a natural stage for sailing and wind sports. With average annual wind speeds ranging from 9 to 12 miles per hour, the island offers reliable sailing weather, especially from September through May, when northeast winds are most common. These conditions set the scene in November 1975, when the Sea Pines Resort hosted the Hobie 16 Catamaran Nationals. The week-long regatta drew 133 boats to the water, filling the shoreline with colorful sails and spirited competition. The excitement peaked in the final race, where 50 sailors vied for the national title. In the end, Randy Hatfield and Kim Jacob claimed the championship, forever marking Hilton Head as a memorable host for the sailing world.
This fall, Hilton Head will once again celebrate its sailing legacy with the Hilton Head Multi Hull 50th Anniversary Beach Regatta, hosted at The Beach House Resort. The event will bring a dazzling mix of multihull boats, Hobie 14s, 16s, 20s, and more—with as many as 100 boats expected to race. The week kicks off with clinics led by professional sailors from around the world, followed by three days of competition. On Saturday, spectators can watch distance races as colorful sails dot the shoreline, while Sunday’s short races will offer an up-close view near Coligny Beach. Off the water, the celebration continues with a spirited 70s Disco Party at The Beach House, with proceeds supporting the Island Recreation Center’s Sailing Program. It’s the perfect blend of history, sport, and community, propelling Hilton Head’s sailing tradition into its next fifty years.
