ello, Friends! December on Hilton Head Island is truly the most wonderful time of the year! As the Lowcountry air turns crisp and the lights start to twinkle, our 12-mile island transforms into a warm, welcoming wonderland. But that’s just the appetizer for this Holiday Feast! Also in this December issue, you’ll find our hand-picked listings for entertainment, shopping, and restaurants, along with safety info, helpful guides, and more. Flip the page for wildlife dos and don’ts, maps of Hilton Head’s roads and paths, and a few rules and regulations to make your stay a little easier. We’ve included charts for parks and beaches, an area tide schedule, and your December horoscope! And this month’s “Highlights” and Calendar of Events are here too—plus, there’s even more at www.hiltonheadisland.com, www.hiltonhead.com, www.bluffton.com, www.savannah.com, www.beaufort.com and www.stsimonisland.com.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

To The Golfer In Your Life!

1.A prepaid round (or rounds!) of golf.

The three Palmetto Dunes Resort Golf Courses have hosted tournaments that included some of golf’s biggest names, like Davis Love III, Tiger Woods and Phil Michelson. The 17th hole of the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall is short but challenging, and the 390yard dogleg left Par 4 will test even the pros. Tiger tried to do it in one shot, and even he scored an eight!

2.Golf lessons.

It is well known that golf is a game of opposites — that’s why it’s so hard to teach yourself to play! A lesson with an effective instructor can go a long way toward fewer putts, longer drives and lower scores. Let a digital swing analysis diagnose

and develop your technique, and tell you something about your swing that you didn’t know. Palmetto Dunes’ PGA Class-A coaches teach beginners, collegiate golfers and everyone in between, and offer private and group lessons. Gift certificates with flexible timing are also available.

3.Golf shirts.

Palmetto Dunes’ three Pro Shops have excellent selections of Travis Mathews, Peter Millar, Adidas and Straight Down. Also, their classy accessory selection makes shopping for stocking stuffers easy!

4.A playing lesson.

Another great gift for all ages and skill levels is the opportunity to play alongside a pro. When you “Play with the Pro and Learn as You Go,” clubs and equipment are provided. The golfing student learns tech-

nique, tips and tricks, etiquette and course management, while playing through with a professional. Instruction manual and videos of lessons learned included!

5.Gift card for all of the above.

Gift cards are simple and flexible, and the best part is that your golf-obsessed loved ones can choose exactly how they want to use it.

THave a GREENHoliday Season

here is no better time for locals on Hilton Head Island than the holidays. For the few weeks before Christmas, the community shares a closeness and warm spirit. It’s the best time of the year to go out and see holiday lights, enjoy holiday music, give back and shop! Unfortunately, this special time of year seems to necessitate activities that are not so eco-friendly.

Here are a few tips to have a responsible holiday season and to give back to the Earth:

d Don’t cut down a tree! The average Christmas tree is 10 years old. Rather than cutting down these important plants, use a potted, living tree instead. There are a number of different firs, pines and cypress trees that yield the right shape, and you can either keep them potted outdoors the rest of the year or plant them back in the ground after the holiday season. Alternatively, you can rent a live tree, which will be collected after the festive season. To purchase a tree, your best bet is to visit a local plant nursery. If necessary, trees can also be purchased online.

d Decorate with nature or even trash Get creative and resist purchasing trays of plastic, glass and metal ornaments, wrapping paper and foil ribbons, plastic trees and flowers—all of which is difficult to recycle and packed with chemicals and components that are bad for plants and animals. Decorate your home and your tree with holly, cedar sprigs and magnolia leaves. Or, get creative and use old soda bottles, cans, coffee bags and papers to create your own decorations, which you can recycle after the holidays or save for future use. Wrap your gifts in a reusable shopping bag, which you can personalize for the recipient with craft paint. Or reuse newspaper, wallpaper, book pages, paper grocery bags and off-cuts of fabric to wrap your gifts. Incorporate eco-friendly sprigs of in-season greenery and bio-degradable twine instead of ribbons and bows.

d Choose Earth-friendly family activities

Make memories this holiday season by choosing a great outdoor activity to do with your family. Outside Hilton Head offers daily kayak tours, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Kayaking is comfortable and safe for every member of your family and is sure to be a bonding experience. The December temperatures are perfect for exploring the marsh, breathing some fresh air and seeing Hilton Head’s most scenic views. The best part is that you won’t be burning fuel or creating trash!

d Gift responsibly When choosing gifts for your friends and family, consider the amount of packaging of various options. Choose gifts that make green choices easier for your friends and family, like a nice recycling bin or compost enclosure. Give experiences rather than things, like yoga classes, historical tours or outdoor adventures. Shop local stores for unique items produced in your community, rather than imported, generic items. For all those small gifts on your list, an easy-to-grow houseplant in a nice pot is always a perfect gift.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy holiday season on Hilton Head Island!

HILTON HEAD HISTORY

Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.

Thousands of Years Ago

Native Americans came to hunt and fish.

Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”

1520s

Conquistadors explored the area.

1663

17th, 18th & 19th Centuries

For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.

The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.

In the summer, charter fishing clients frequently ask, “What do you do around here in the winter? Is there anything to fish for then?”

Reeling in Specks

Winter offers some of the best fishing of the year on Hilton Head Island.

These questions always brings a smile to my face because – as all resident anglers know –winter on Hilton Head Island offers some of the best fishing of the year. Cooler weather brings cooler water temperatures, and the murky summer water turns a clear green. It’s time to put away the big nets and heavier tackle and break out the light rods and artificials. It’s trout time!

Speckled or spotted sea trout – known locally as “specks” – are here year round, but not in the numbers found at this time of year. (Maybe they are here in abundance throughout the year, and the cooler water brings out a voracious appetite. Like a lot of things related to fishing, I don’t always try to figure it out. It just is.)

There are days this time of year that every cast results in a rod-jarring strike followed by a spirited battle with lots of top water head shaking. Reeling in specks offers a lively, rewarding adventure.

Silvery iridescent and covered with black spots, the sleek specks average a pound or two, but fish in the three to five pound range are not

uncommon. These bigger fish, often called “gators,” will literally take the rod out of your hand if you’re not careful.

As I said earlier, the sea trout strike is anything but gentle. To ensure the prey doesn’t get away, trout are armed with a set of fangs that are quite impressive.

So, how do you catch local sea trout? Hard plastic swimming baits like Mirrorlures are productive, but more often than not I prefer the soft plastic tails on a quarter-ounce jig head. There are many varieties and colors, paddle tails, screw tails and just plain straight tails. When fished properly, all can bring success.

A growing number of companies are incorporating scent into plastic lures. Gulp and DOA are some of the better-known brands and have proven their fish-attracting properties for some time now. One of my favorite colors is aptly named the Christmas Tree, which fits right in with the spirit of the holidays celebrated during trout season.

While everyone else is decorating and shopping, I’m tossing the Christmas Tree at specks. If the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is getting to you, give me a call and I’ll put you on some of best fishing the Lowcountry has to offer!

PIPING PLOVERS, Our Little Winter Friends

Each winter, as the summer crowds fade and the beaches of Hilton Head grow quiet, a tiny traveler arrives from far away. The Piping Plover, a small, sandy-colored shorebird about the size of a sparrow, makes its seasonal home along our inlets, sandbars, and uninhabited islands. These endangered birds are masters of camouflage, blending so perfectly into the shoreline that you might walk right past one without even noticing! Yet, if you look closely, you’ll spot their quick little runs along the tide line as they search for tiny crustaceans and insects to snack on. Their presence is a quiet reminder of the wild rhythms that continue along our coast, even in the calm of winter.

These petite shorebirds with their round, stocky bodies and big dark eyes stand low and horizontal, giving them a distinctive posture as they scurry across the sand. Their sandy grayish-brown feathers blend almost perfectly with the beach, while their white bellies and faint, often broken, black “necklace” give them a touch of quiet elegance. A closer look reveals bright yellow-orange legs and a short, stubby bill, perfect tools for their favorite pastime: poking around in the soft sand for insects, worms, and tiny crustaceans. Traveling hundreds of miles from their northern breeding grounds each fall, these tiny adventurers arrive on South Carolina’s coast to spend the winter foraging peacefully along the upper edges of the shoreline, often alone or in small, quiet groups.

These endangered birds are masters of camouflage

Despite traveling hundreds of miles between their wintering and breeding grounds, Piping Plovers are surprisingly faithful to their favorite spots, often returning year after year and sometimes even nesting within just 128 feet of their previous nest. Birds from the Great Lakes spend their winters along the beaches of South Carolina and Georgia, while most from eastern Canada head to North Carolina. When it’s time to breed, these tiny shorebirds become meticulous little architects. Males create several shallow depressions, called “scrapes,” in loose sand above the high-tide line, often near small clumps of grass or close to colonies of terns. Each scrape is only about 4 inches wide and half an inch deep, but the pair can spend 5–10 days deciding which one to use before lining it with tiny pebbles or bits of shell. It’s a careful, patient process that ensures their eggs have a safe, camouflaged home on the beach, hidden in plain sight from predators and human eyes alike.

Piping Plovers are a small but captivating part of Hilton Head’s winter wildlife. While their populations have declined over the past decades, careful conservation efforts are helping protect these delicate shorebirds. On Hilton Head, more than nine acres of beach, including the north end of the plantation, a small island near Fish Haul Creek, and Mitchelville Beach Park, serve as safe winter homes where visitors can watch them forage along the sand. Seeing these little birds in their natural habitat is a reminder of the beauty and importance of protecting our coastal wildlife.
