SUMMARY In addition to experiencing a large scale humanitarian crisis, Yemen has been witnessing conflict since March 2015. Since then, the situation in the country has rapidly moved towards a humanitarian tragedy. More than 19 months of conflict have devastated Yemen, leaving 18.8 million people in need of some form of humanitarian assistance, including 10.3 million who are in acute need. About 14.1 million people are food insecure. An estimated 3.3 million children, pregnant women or new mothers are acutely malnourished, of whom 462,000 children under 5 are severely acutely malnourished and on the brink of dying. About 14.5 million Yemenis have no access to clean and improved water sources or to adequate sanitation facilities, with rural areas the worst affected. A further 14.8 million people require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic healthcare needs, with only 45 per cent of health facilities functioning. More than 3.3 million people have been internally displaced, and according to health facility reports, at least 7,070 people have been killed and 36,818 injured. Over 172,468 Yemenis and third country nationals have also fled to neighbouring countries.
There are reports of widespread damage to civilian infrastructure across the country, including transportation, infrastructure, hospitals, schools and homes.

ISLAMIC RELIEF YEMEN AND PARTNERS We assisted 10 million people in 18 governorates..
Islamic Relief Yemen (IRY) is part of a wider family of Islamic Relief Worldwide, and was founded in Yemen in 1998. Since its inception, Islamic Relief has been assisting “people in need” in three major programmatic areas; relief and emergency response, orphan and child welfare and development programmes. Islamic Relief Country office is in the capital city Sana’a with 8 sub offices in Dhamar, Amran, Aden, Taiz, Hodeida, Saada, Maarib and Rymah. More than 145 national and international staff members and 1,500 volunteers are all working on implementing
projects in different sectors and different geographical areas around the country. Different donors have shown their trust in IRY capacity and provided financial, technical and in-kind support to help those in need. They include DFID, Sida, Radio-help, BMZ, UNWFP, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNOCHA, IDB, EC, KSC and Islamic Relief partner offices in USA, UK, Belgium, Australia, South Africa, Middle East, Canada, Germany, Sweden and others. Besides emergency response, IRY is working on different development projects, child welfare program and seasonal interventions like Ramadan and Qurbani. Islamic Relief is an active member of clusters and believes in close coordination with all stakeholders including communities, community leadership, UN agencies, INGOs, NGOs, authorities and civil society.

Yemen Emergency Response 2016
Islamic Relief has implemented more than 100 projects so far, assisting more than 10 million people in 18 out of 22 governorates in thematic areas of Food Security and Livelihoods, Nutrition, WASH, Health, Education and others. IR launched an emergency response within 72 hours of the war interrupting in Yemen on 26th of March 2015. During 2015, IRY reached 2.9 million people mainly in food security, health and nutrition and WASH. Islamic Relief has continued working for war affected communities in year 2016 and assisted 5.3 million individuals from January to December. As per joint assessment led by OCHA, IRY again focused on three most prioritized sectors of Food Security, Health & Nutrition and WASH. IRY remained one of the largest partners of World Food Program
during the year in providing food assistance to severely food insecure people in six governorates. Hospitals were provided with medicine and medical supplies. Nutrition assistance was provided to the malnourished children, and pregnant & lactating women (PLWs). Access to clean drinking water was made possible for IDPs, returnees and host families.

Emergency Food Assistance Through WFP Partnership The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has continued to partner with Islamic Relief in Yemen, enabling us to mobilize and distribute food assistance to the most vulnerable, war affected population and IDPs in Sana’a, Dhamar, Mareb, Hodeida, and Rayma governorates.

Medicines and medical supplies were urgently provided to six hospitals in Aden and Taiz in order to improve the availability and quality of health services.

To alleviate the suffering of conflict affected and most vulnerable people in health sector, Islamic Relief has provided medications and medical support (especially the provision of oxygen canisters) for patients with chronic diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac/liver disease) to hospitals in Taiz city.

Yemen Emergency Medicine and Medical Equipment
The health sector is currently facing an unprecedented crisis, which has been recently exacerbated by the financial crisis faced by the MOPHP and banking system overall.It is currently estimated that about 14.8 million people are in need of health services from fewer and fewer service providers, with most health facilities under resourced and over-burdened. There is a chronic shortage of medical supplies including for mass casualty management, as well as of essential medicine for chronic diseases. In partnership with Islamic Development Bank, Zunjbar Hospital was provided with medical equipment and medicines, which allowed the hospital to continue to serve patients from all surrounding districts and villages.

DEVELOPMENT INTERVENTIONS
Livelihood and Small Enterprises Project This project will provide assistance and inputs to those beneficiaries that are still in need to expand their business to improve their monthly income. It focuses on farmers, animal breeders and youth who have been trained under previous project.
Enhanced Rural Resilience in Yemen ERRY in a multi-donors project that is designed to alleviate suffering of conflictaffected and the most vulnerable families in Hodeida by involving them in-cash-for work activities. Another objective for this project is to enhance the resilience of crisis affected rule communities through support of livelihoods stabilisation and recovery.

This project has four main components: winterisation items, food security, WASH and supporting special needs. The project aims to support families, IDPs, orphans, and children with sepcial needs in Sana’a, Amran, and Taiz.

SEASONAL PROJECTS Ramadan Programme Our annual Ramadan appeal enables people to share the joy of the blessed month with those suffering hardship. IRY started work in Yemen in 1998 with its main focus on Ramadan food distribution and Qurbani Projects. IRY has continued the implementation of the seasonal projects and link them up with large-scale projects that will have a longer-lasting impact such as food distribution for the war-affected in the conflict areas. In 2016, Islamic Relief has delivered Ramadan food packs to the most vulnerable families in Sana’a, Aden, Taiz, Amran, Saada, and Almahara.
72,996 BENEFICIARIES Qurbani Programme Every year, Islamic Relief provides the best possible Qurbani meat to poor people, in line with Shariah requirements. We prioritise the most vulnerable families through our rigorous selection criteria. We also ensure that animals are transported and slaughtered humanely by managing the whole transportation and logistics network. Strict hygiene standards cover the handling, packing and distribution of all meat. In Yemen, Qurbani Programme was implemented in six different governorates: Sana’a, Aden, Saada, Taiz, Lahj, and Amran.

THE BESIEGED CITY OF TAIZ
Taiz is the most conflict affected city in yemen It has the highest number of killed, injured and displaced people. Today, the situation of the people living in Taiz is nothing short of a tragedy, not least because of the ongoing conflict. The siege, imposed for more than a year, has made life even worse for hundreds of thousands of civilians inside the city regarding health, food and the local environment.

Taiz Humanitarian Situation and Needs The situation in Taiz has deteriorated significantly since the beginning of the conflict on April 14 2015 and the imposed siege has made life even more difficult. For more than 19 months, consumable items, food stuffs, medical supplies, water and oxygen cylinders, have all been prevented from passing in to the city via the main roads, which still remain closed. Access to the city is challenging for local people as well. In bordering areas, it can take between six and seven hours to get in and out of the city, mostly through difficult and unpaved alternative routes.

Water, electricity and sanitation services are still cut off, in addition to the lack of health and medical services. Today, the situation of the people living in Taiz is nothing short of a tragedy, not least because of the on-going conflict. In order to meet the health and local environment needs in Taiz today, 82 million USD is needed every month. Affected families residing in the city also need to be provided with 100,000 food baskets per month. Furthermore, another 150,000 food baskets are needed for IDPs returning to the city; once they have broken the partial blockade, this support is needed to ensure some stability after their displacement.
Delivering Aid To Taiz City Taiz governorate is one of the most affected areas in Yemen, and to be able to provide the aid assistance to the growing large numbers of affected people because of the deteriorating situation due to the ongoing war, IRY has established a field office. We believe that by inaugurating a field office in Taiz governorate, we will be better in providing the aids assistance and we will have the ability to assess closely the humanitarian situation in Taiz by working in the center of events and closely to the effected peoples. So far IRY has a number of 3 staff and 35 volunteers who represent IRY main office and performing their duties by implementation several projects in Taiz. Moreover, Orphans Department in Islamic Relief – Yemen has recently finished their assessment in Taiz as they are targeting 600 orphans in the city.
