Myanmar Emergency Response DONOR IMPACT REPORT Rohingya Crisis 1 Year Anniversary

The tense political situation in Myanmar has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis. For several years, the Rohingya community of the Rakhine State has experienced discrimination and persecution. This has forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, leaving behind their possessions and risking their lives in hopes of finding safety.

After a major outbreak of violence in August 2017, a sudden influx of more than 900,000 Rohingyas fled to the borders of Bangladesh and are now living as refugees with inadequate shelter and limited access to food, sanitation and health facilities.

Those that stayed behind have become internally displaced, living in camps that are congested and unsuitable for permanent settlement. They face an ongoing threat of poverty, injury, and fear.

Our Work in the Region MYANMAR

BANGLADESH

Islamic Relief Canada began its work in Myanmar in 2008, and has maintained its presence there despite political tension. To date, our global efforts have helped nearly 1 million individuals in Myanmar through livelihood support, educational materials, water and sanitation assistance, shelter, food parcels, and health services. Within the Rakhine state especially, our mobile health service clinics and emergency response has helped respond to the urgent needs of conflict affected and remote communities.

In addition to our ongoing development projects in Bangladesh, our work expanded to respond to the urgent needs of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar.

This featured food packs, living essentials and shelter supplies. Our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene projects help ensure that entire communities have equal access to necessary water sources, toilets, and washing facilities. It also ensures safe and adequate shelter as well as vocational training to facilitate skill building and self sufficiency within the refugee camps.

Providing food packs and kitchen kits to those escaping violence in the Rakhine region. Focused on vulnerable and displaced women, children, and the elderly.

Working to reduce the risk of death and illness in conflict affected and remote communities by providing services, prescriptions and treatment.

Providing monthly food packs and building 30 long shelters for hundreds of families in Sittwe, who have fled violence. Focused on vulnerable and displaced women, children, disabled, and the elderly.

Provided emergency assistance and building safe shelter for displaced families who were severely affected by Cyclone Mora and conflict in the Rakhine region.

40,000 Individuals

Provided various responses including food packs, living essentials, medical care, training, sanitation and water access, shelter, with priority for women and girls.

200 Individuals

Providing education to Rohingya refugee children through a mobile education centre, to overcome various barriers to access. Classes are customized to cater to the specific needs of the children, and focus on increasing literacy and knowledge.

840 Individuals

A rehabilitation centre constructed to provide health support and temporary shelter to Rohingya refugees who were ill and homeless. This included basic medical checkups, prescriptions, vaccinations, hygiene kits, and healthy food.
