A Resilient Refuge According to the world bank, on average, refugees will spend 17 years in a refugee camp. Keeping this cruel statistic in mind, we wanted to create an EOC design that is able to grow and become the heart of a new village. Choosing materials that are easily accessible, new extensions of housing, schools and other buildings can slowly be built around the EOC, creating a safe new environment. Our design creates a space that acts as a catalyst between the indoor and the outdoor movements of the people. For the revitalisation of the community who has been affected by crises, the project is designed to allow expansion, such as building houses and schools connected to the central EOC by the courtyards which build a pattern that the community can grow organically from. Rather than combining all functions under one roof, we decided to allow individual moments and activities to occur throughout the entire EOC. The placement of each building allows close proximity but also a literal center to evolve, encouraging and encompassing the gatherings that will naturally take place in the camp. The interior courtyards provide a secluded and private outdoor space, whereas the outdoor courtyard provides a more expressive space where dance performances, gatherings, or cultural activities occur. The Logistics building consists of an area for residents to buy or receive food and necessities from the storage area, along with public restrooms, and small office space. The building has a backdoor entrance in which supply vehicles can be drop off relief supplies to be stored in the storage area. The Management area consists of secured office spaces, a meeting room, and a courtyard. Lastly, the Assistance area has 12 beds for the monitoring of newly displaced people, individual rooms for women and children for safety reasons, and a lobby and physician’s room for small medical or psychological consultations. The EOC is designed to allow a permanent community to settle and flourish, expanding from the branches of the courtyards within the EOC. Choosing courtyards as a link between buildings allows for the spaces to change and adapt as the functions surrounding the EOC change. The EOC evolves and the courtyards connect this project to new community functions such as schools and markets. This resilient concept is envisioned to foster a better standard of living for people displaced. VIEW FROM CENTRAL COURTYARD
