What really matters is what the person you want to influence wants. The more you are in touch with this, the more impact you will have. When I speak to audiences about being the pink zebra, I talk about what it feels like to be weird—to be rejected—to have no group that claims me—and the desire to be accepted and validated. When I use those words—the words of how I feel in my pain and the desires I seek—I have the deepest level of connection with my listener who feels that same pain or desire. We don’t connect to someone else’s plot; we connect to their emotion. When your wound/desire mirrors that of your buyer and is verbalized—you have connection.
