The International Jury, chaired by Elan Closs Stephens a former Governor of the British Film Institute, is made up of a cross section of people at the top of their game.

It includes the hugely talented Simon Russell Beale whose performance of Hamlet at The National Theatre in 2000 was voted the best ever by The Daily Telegraph.

Three teenage boys break out of a Spanish detention centre and set about reaching Madrid where the gang leader Xabi is determined to re-establish contact with a middle-aged Basque separatist he had a brief affair with. To attract his teacher’s attention and further push forward the cause of the Basque nation Xabi sets up a small bomb factory and plans a terrorist act. Meanwhile the other two boys start relationships with girls, who figure out what’s going on. This fast moving sexy drama examines the relationship between old fashioned nationalism and the progressive acceptance of sexuality in today’s society.

With a host of international film makers in Cardiff for the festival, the forum will examine the sometimes difficult areas of festival planning, press and marketing.

The forum will also address what lessons Welsh production companies, who produce content in Welsh and English, can learn from international production companies who successfully produce, promote and market gay content. Contributors will include Tom Abell (Peccadillo Pictures), Lewis Tice (TLA Releasing), Casper Andreas (Embrem Entertainment), Todd Stephens,Yair Hochner and Nia Dryhurst.

Intellect Books’ landmark collection, edited by Robin Griffiths, draws together a number of accessible and insightful essays that explore, for the first time, an exciting new area of academic analysis and debate.

Through case studies of key films and filmmakers, the contributors to this volume resituate discussions of queer representation and desire within a uniquely diverse and divergent European context, which raise many provocative questions about understandings of gender, sexuality and identity in film that spill across a variety of national borders, cultures and traditions.

Tel Aviv’s gay life returns to the Iris Prize Festival with yet another group of young friends searching for love and happiness. At the centre we have Omer, a single librarian who is just about to celebrate his 30 birthday. He is joined by his sister who is finding it difficult leaving her ex-girlfriend, who happens to be her boss, and his mother who is determined to organise a birthday dinner party where everybody turns up!

Antarctica is over flowing with passion and is hopelessly romantic.

As with a small number of sequels (Godfather Part 2, Weekend at Bernie’s 2) this outrageous romp is even better than Todd’s accomplished first excursion for the boys. Spring break in sunny Ft. Lauderdale is the perfect location for sexy action as the boys enter the “Gays Gone Wild” competition; the winner is the one who gets most “action” during the holiday. The fabulous RuPaul is the hostess with the most as the boys deal with the evil gay clique and the nasty crabs (you’ve been warned!).

15 year old Carla is off to Lyon to pursue a fashion career when a thief steals her savings at a train station.

Stranded in Germany, she eventually finds help from Rico with some construction work – for a favour or two – before meeting Lucie and her brother, Michael. Discovering she is pregnant, and worried that her parents might track her down if she registers at a hospital, Lucie embarks on a complicated plot of identity switching which threatens the girls’ friendship and budding romance.

The American rural south in the late 70s is the backdrop to this tender and tragic love story between two gay teenagers. Nathan, who has just moved into the area with his family, is transfixed by the handsome neighbour Roy, but is initially too shy to make the first move. When Roy suggests they study together, soon enough they are sneaking away into the woods to make out. Nathan often finds himself sleeping in the woods trying to avoid his father’s sexual abuse.

Roy on the other hand comes from a more loving and stable background. Based on the acclaimed novel by Jim Grimsley which received the American Library Association’s Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Book Award for Literature.

Set in New York’s East Village this is the story of two men, Kyle and Marcel, who fall in and out of love in a very short space of time. The tranquillity and affection shared between the lovers initially is doomed to disaster with the arrival of Kyle’s troubled sister, April. A transsexual hooker with a history of mental problems, she’s both manipulative and broke! When she decides she wants to change her gender back to male things take a turn for the worst.

A special screening of the BBC Wales programme featuring actor Ian “H” Watkins as he returns home to Wales to see how life has changed for gay men and women since his youth. He hears some harrowing stories of victimisation - and meets people with extreme homophobic views. But there is a message of hope as he meets campaigners fighting prejudice in schools.

competition introduction / Cyflwyniad i’r Gystadleuaeth 30 short films have been selected to compete for the 2008 Iris Prize. Half the films have been selected by our Partner Festivals (see page 19), and the other half by the pre-selection jury which included Lisa Nesbit, Bafta Cymru and freelance writer Philip Wyn Jones. We would like to thank them both for all their hard work for the second year in a row.

iris jury / rheithgor iris Chair Elan Closs Stephens is Professor of Communications and Creative Industries at Aberystwyth University’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television. From 1998 2006, Elan was Chair of the S4C Authority and was a Governor of the British Film Institute until 2007 and Chair of its Audit and Governance Committee during the major refurbishment of the South Bank National Film Theatre. She received a CBE in 2001 for services to broadcasting and the Welsh language and is currently on the Board of the British Council and the Film Agency for Wales.

Cadeirydd Mae Elan Closs Stephens yn Athro Cyfathrebu a Diwydiannau Creadigol yn Adran Theatr, Ffilm a Theledu Prifysgol Aberystwyth. Rhwng 1998 - 2006, roedd Elan yn Gadeirydd Awdurdod S4C a, than 2007, yn un o Lywodraethwyr Sefydliad Ffilm Prydain. Roedd hi hefyd yn Gadeirydd Pwyllgor Archwilio a Llywodraethu y sefydliad hwnnw, dros gyfnod y gwaith adnewyddu sylweddol a welwyd yn Theatr Ffilm Genedlaethol y South Bank. Derbyniodd CBE yn 2001 am eu gwasanaethau i ddarlledu a’r iaith Gymraeg ac mae hi ar hyn o bryd yn aelod o Fwrdd y Cyngor Prydeinig ac Asiantaeth Ffilm Cymru.

Elan closs stephens

Iris Prize winner 2007 Award-winning writer/director Dee Rees is a recent alumna of New York University’s graduate film program and a 2007 Sundance Screenwriting Lab Fellow.

She has written and directed several short films, including Pariah, which has screened at over 40 festivals including the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and garnered several accolades including the inaugural Iris Prize Award in 2007. She is currently wrapping post-production on a feature documentary on Liberia titled Eventual Salvation as well developing Pariah as a feature film project.

Actor Simon Russell Beale is an Associate Artist of the RSC, National and Almeida Theatres.

RSC performances include ‘Konstantin’ in The Seagull and ‘Ariel’ in The Tempest.

Numerous productions at the National Theatre include Hamlet, winning the Evening Standard Best Actor Award. Simon starred in Monty Python’s Spamalot in New York and London and his television work includes A Dance to the Music of Time for which he won the Royal Television Society Award and a Bafta for Best Actor. In 2003 Simon was awarded a CBE for his services to the Arts.

Programmer, Sydney David Pearce has recently celebrated 10 years at Queerscreen, in Sydney Australia, who present the annual Mardi Gras Film Festival and QueerDOC, the world’s first queer documentary film festival. David started on the board and was Vice President of Queerscreen before becoming Festival Programmer. Prior to Queerscreen, David was editor of Australian industry magazines, Movie Trader and Video Trader. Over the years he has had extensive experience as a film critic and film writer and is a member of the Film Critics Circle of Australia and FIPRESCI (the international film critics’ association).

Film reviewer BBC Radio Cymru Gwion worked in the film industry for four years and was responsible for sales and distribution of over 100 short films worldwide. He has programmed numerous short film and feature programmes for various film festivals including Umea, ClermontFerrand, Hamburg and Cardiff. He is a regular film reviewer with the BBC’s online service, as well as writing reviews for the national newspaper of Wales, The Western Mail, and has sat on the judging panel for the short films and animation categories for the Bafta Wales Awards.

Journalist, The Independent Johann Hari is an award-winning journalist who writes for the Independent, New York Times, Le Monde, and The Guardian, amongst many other international newspapers and magazines. In 2007 he was named Newspaper Journalist of the Year by Amnesty International for his reporting on the war in Congo. His first book, God Save the Queen? was published in 2003, and his play Going Down in History, was performed at the Garage Theatre, Edinburgh in 2002 to critical acclaim. He is now a Senior Contributing Editor to Attitude, Britain’s best-selling gay magazine.

In 1992 he started Dangerous to Know, the ‘world’s first distribution’ company dedicated to lesbian and gay films. In 2000 Tom formed Peccadillo Pictures, and was instrumental in the development of TLA Releasing in the USA. He occasionally produces for film or TV, including the short film Summer, which was shortlisted the 2007 Iris Prize.

Distributor, US For three years Lewis lived out of a suitcase handling publicity on the film festival circuit, which had him flying off to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Sundance before he eventually settled in Philadelphia.

Currently he is the National Press Liaison for TLA Releasing, handling publicity and marketing for theatrical and DVD releases in the US. Passionate about all aspects of culture, especially “pop,” Tice’s writings have been featured on America Online, PlanetOut.com and A Bear’s Life magazine.

Director, US A native of Sweden, Casper Andreas formed his own production company, Embrem Entertainment, in 2004 and wrote, produced, directed and starred in its first feature, the gay romantic comedy Slutty Summer. This was followed up by the short film Mormor’s Visit in 2005, and the multi-award winning comedy A Four Letter Word in 2006. Andreas directed his first dramatic feature Between Love & Goodbye in the fall of 2007, and is currently working on several upcoming projects.

Director, Israel Yair Hochner made his directorial debut from his own original script with Good Boys (Yeladim Tovim) which became a hit on the festival circuit and won awards in LA, New York, Montreal and Tampa. He has taught cinema for five years in Netania and moonlights as a film critic for Israel’s leading website on cinema, Seret. He also writes TV reviews for Time Out Tel Aviv and has written articles for Cinematheque Magazine.

In June, 2006 Yair co-founded the first LGBT Film Festival in Tel Aviv.

Director, UK Born in Caernarfon, Nia worked as an actor before taking up her role behind the camera.

After studies at the European Film School in Denmark, a period working in the film industry in Berlin and an MA in Directing from Bristol University, Nia moved back to Wales where she has been directing and producing for the last 9 years. Married to Karen, they have a two-year-old son. Nia won the Bafta Cymru Best Director award for her film, Fel Arall (closing film of the Iris Prize Festival in 2007).

Actor Working in the entertainment industry for over 25 years, Jonah Blechman has acted, produced and directed in film, television, and commercials. He starred in This Boy’s Life opposite Leo DiCaprio, Fall Time with David Arquette, and 1999’s Sundance Special Jury Prize Winner Treasure Island. He executive produced and starred in the 2006 cult comedy feature Another Gay Movie, produced Sessions starring Jeremy Sisto and Josh Lucas, and he plays the lead in Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild, which opens later this year.

Director, US Todd Stephens made his directorial debut with Edge of Seventeen, based on his coming-out experience and filmed in his hometown in Ohio. It won numerous prizes including Best Picture at the San Francisco International L&G Film Festival. Gypsy 83, Stephens’ follow up to Edge, went on to gain critical acclaim as well as a theatrical release.

His third feature, Another Gay Movie became the most successful gay indie film of recent years and its follow up Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild! will be making its European premiere as part of this year’s festival.

The Friends of Iris played a vital role in the success of the inaugural Iris Prize Festival in 2007. The members of the scheme offered almost 100 bed nights to our visiting film makers and jury members, and support with our marketing activity, press work and guest liaison.

Since 2007, the scheme has grown in numbers with more wonderful people who have once again offered invaluable support to the second Iris Prize Festival.

Chwaraeodd Cyfeillion Iris ran greiddiol yn llwyddiant Gŵyl gyntaf Gwobr Iris yn 2007. Darparodd aelodau’r cynllun welyau i fwy na 100 o’n hymwelwyr, yn gyfarwyddwyr ac aelodau’r rheithgor, ac roedd eu cymorth nhw â’r ymgyrch farchnata, a chysylltiadau’r wasg ac wrth groesawu gwesteion yn amhrisiadwy. Ers 2007, mae’r cynllun wedi tyfu’n gyson ac mae na fwy o bobl nag erioed yn ein helpu ni i drefnu a gweithredu Gŵyl Gwobr Iris eleni.

October 7 – 10 Hydref 2009 Symposium: Call For Papers The Iris Prize Festival and the Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations are pleased to announce that the 2009 Iris Prize Festival will include an academic symposium on sexual identity, screen culture and small nations. The symposium will invite contributions from film and television industry professionals as well as academics to create a dialogue that will echo the spirit of the Iris Prize Festival.

The Symposium will be moderated by former Iris Prize International Jury Member Ceri Sherlock from BBC Wales.

“I’m delighted to be asked to moderate this symposium for Atrium and the Iris Prize in 09. Proposals and Abstracts for papers, discussions and interventions should initially be between 500 and 1,000 words and sent to me at ceri@irisprize.org by October 31st 2008”.
