Evaluations should never be the only tool you use when selecting animals for breeding. Animals must also be examined to ensure the animal is also physically correct; an animal that is not physically correct (ie. mouth, feet, etc.) cannot compensate for this fault regardless of its evaluation and should be avoided for breeding purposes. €uroStars –

How to interpret them

• Each star represents where the animal ranks on each index in 20% bounds

• One star represents the bottom 20% of the breed for that trait

• Five star represents the top 20% of the breed for that trait

• The higher the stars, the higher the predicted profitability of that animal

Animals that only have the outline of a star represent animals that have within flock evaluations, this means the star rating of these animals cannot be compared to any other animals from a different flock.

• This figure indicates more precisely where the animals rank within the breed. eg. Top 16% (see example below)

• This is displayed with a shaded line, the further to the right these are on the scale, the better its position within the breed.

Acc% (Accuracy%)

• This figure is very important as it represents the amount of data behind each evaluation. Where Acc% is low, much less emphasis should be placed on the evaluation, and vice versa.

• Accuracy is displayed for the Replacement & Terminal Indices. It is not displayed for the four sub-traits. If an animal has high accuracy on Replacement & Terminal, it will be high accuracy across all traits.

1) Replacement (€3.44) – If a farmer desires a ram to breed both lambs both for slaughter and replacement ewe lambs then they should select a ram based on this index. The bulk of this index is a combination of Lamb Survivability, Days to Slaughter, No. of lambs born & Daughters milk. The € value beside the index represents the difference in profit that each lamb sired from this ram will have. This € value is an across breed value, so different breeds can be compared to each other.

2) Terminal (€2.86) – If a farmer desires a ram to breed only lambs for slaughter then they should select a ram based on this index. The bulk of this index is a combination of Lamb Survivability and Days to Slaughter. The € value beside the index represents the difference in profit that each lamb sired from this ram will have. This € value is an across breed value, so different breeds can be compared to each other.

3) Lamb Survivability – This ranks animals based on lambing ease and lamb survival rate. Every positive % point on this index is an extra lamb surviving to 40 days and vice versa.

4) Days to Slaughter – This ranks animals on their genetic ability to grow. The index associated with this trait represents the difference in the predicted number of days required for the progeny of this ram to reach the desired slaughtered weight compared with other animals of the same breed.

5) No. of Lambs Born – This ranks animals based on the predicted prolificacy of the females from this animal compared with other animals of the same breed.

6) Daughters Milk – This ranks animals based on the predicted milking performance of their daughters compared with other animals of the same breed.

Important: The Pedigree Information printed in this catalogue is as supplied by or on behalf of the breeder. The responsibility for the accuracy of the information therefore rests solely with the breeder and not Sheep Ireland.

Evaluations should never be the only tool you use when selecting animals for breeding. Animals must also be examined to ensure the animal is also physically correct; an animal that is not physically correct (ie. mouth, feet, etc.) cannot compensate for this fault regardless of its evaluation and should be avoided for breeding purposes. See below how to interpret the €uroStar catalogue.

How to interpret them

• Each star represents where the animal ranks on each index in 20% bounds

• One star represents the bottom 20% of the breed for that trait

• Five star represents the top 20% of the breed for that trait

• The higher the stars, the higher the predicted profitability of that animal

Animals that only have the outline of a star represent animals that have within flock evaluations, this means the star rating of these animals cannot be compared to any other animals from a different flock.

• This figure indicates more precisely where the animals rank within the breed. eg. Top 16% (see example below)

• This is displayed with a shaded line, the further to the right these are on the scale, the better its position within the breed.

Acc% (Accuracy%)

• This figure is very important as it represents the amount of data behind each evaluation. Where Acc% is low, much less emphasis should be placed on the evaluation, and vice versa.

• Accuracy is displayed for the Replacement & Terminal Indices. It is not displayed for the four sub-traits. If an animal has high accuracy on Replacement & Terminal, it will be high accuracy across all traits.

1) Replacement (€3.44) – If a farmer desires a ram to breed both lambs both for slaughter and replacement ewe lambs then they should select a ram based on this index. The bulk of this index is a combination of Lamb Survivability, Days to Slaughter, No. of lambs born & Daughters milk. The € value beside the index represents the difference in profit that each lamb sired from this ram will have. This € value is an across breed value, so different breeds can be compared to each other.

2) Terminal (€2.86) – If a farmer desires a ram to breed only lambs for slaughter then they should select a ram based on this index. The bulk of this index is a combination of Lamb Survivability and Days to Slaughter. The € value beside the index represents the difference in profit that each lamb sired from this ram will have. This € value is an across breed value, so different breeds can be compared to each other.

3) Lamb Survivability – This ranks animals based on lambing ease and lamb survival rate. Every positive % point on this index is an extra lamb surviving to 40 days and vice versa.

4) Days to Slaughter – This ranks animals on their genetic ability to grow. The index associated with this trait represents the difference in the predicted number of days required for the progeny of this ram to reach the desired slaughtered weight compared with other animals of the same breed.

5) No. of Lambs Born – This ranks animals based on the predicted prolificacy of the females from this animal compared with other animals of the same breed.

6) Daughters Milk – This ranks animals based on the predicted milking performance of their daughters compared with other animals of the same breed.

CHAROLLAIS REGULATIONS FOR AND CONDITIONS OF SALE

1. All animalsmustbeputup forAuction, and sold in the order in which they appear in the Catalogue. Animals not presented in the Sale Ring, in catalogue order, will not be admitted to the Sale Ring until the end of the section of the Sale, for which they are entered.

2. The pedigree, history and description of each animal shall be guaranteed and warranted to be correct in all particulars, by the person whose name appears as Vendor but such animal shall be sold, subject to all faults. No liability whatsoever shall be undertaken by the Irish Charollais Sheep Society or the Auctioneer for the statements appearing in the catalogue. The Vendors who supply such statements are alone responsible for any error or misrepresentation.

3. Vendors must provide competent persons to take charge of their stock until the close of Sale, whether sold or unsold.

4. The Society, its Servants or Agents shall have no responsibility for any issue arising in relation to the fertility of registered rams purchased at a Society or other sales. Any such issue arising lies solely and remains between the Vendor and the Purchaser. However the Society does hold that a ram shallbe deemedincapableof naturaland effective service if the ram fails to make at least one ewe pregnant under natural breeding conditions within 90 days from date of purchase provided always that (a) any injury or illness however so caused, suffered or contracted by the ram after the sale whilst in the care of the Purchaser does not occur, or (b) the ram is not deceased.

5. The animals shall be sold in (€) Euros. The minimum selling price for hogget rams is €450, other sheep €350.00. All sales subject to 5% commission, payable by the Purchaser.

6. Should any animal pass out of the Sale Ring unsold and be subsequently sold privately, the Purchaser shall pay the commission on such private sale, which must be booked into the Sale Office.

7. The Purchaser shall provide his/her name and address in writing and pay in full, the purchase money for each lot, at the fall of the hammer (if required). In default of same, such lot or lots, so purchased, may be put up for sale again immediately and resold.

8. No lot or lots shall be removed from the premises until paid for but each and every lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer, be considered as delivered and be, and remain in every respect, at the absolute risk of the respective Purchaser(s) thereof and shall be removed from the place of sale at the Purchaser(s) expense.

9. Should any question arise, not provided for in the aforesaid Rules, Regulations or Conditions, the decision of the Auctioneer shall be final, from which there shall be no appeal.

10. All sheep are “on the market” on entering the Sale Ring.

11. A Black Ribbon around a sheep’s neck signifies that such sheep is a sale substitute.

12. Should there be only one ballot, then they will be re-run at the end of their class. Other unsold sheep,regardlessof ballotwillbe soldat the endof their class, or at the discretion of the organizing personnel and the auctioneer.

13. Payment Terms: Cash or Banker’s reference for cheques
