Chairman’s Foreward Michael Bird Dunlever Texels, Trim, Co. Meath Once again we are looking forward to yet another year of assessing the success of the Texel Breed here in Ireland. There are of course numerous indicators of this, each with their own level of importance to a particular breeder or end user. The factual data cannot be overlooked and can be included in the competitive excitement of the show and sales rings. Clear indicators like overseas interests, enthusiastic crowds around show and sale rings and the increasing popularity of in-lamb sales around the country coupled with new and young members are all welcome signs that the Texel Breed is consistently delivering. The Texel traits of hardy lambs at birth with a good kill out percentage and an acceptable level of fat cover continue to be what the commercial producer expects and gets from using a Texel Ram. The use of the increasingly reliable Lamb Plus data as a helpful additional selection tool to choosing a ram ensures that these traits are maintained. Schemes such as the QualEUtex continue to expand giving premiums to producers who produce that higher grade of Texel cross lamb. Equally the established Hiltex ewe consistently produces a very marketable product. Finally I would like to wish all our Texel breeders and customers every success in the season ahead.

Forthcoming Texel Events Growvite National Championships The Hub Indoor event centre at CillĂn Hill Co. Kilkenny is the venue for this years competiton that is being hosted by the NSBA Championships (supported by the RDS) on Saturday 09th of June. This is the first year of this event and Texels are very proud to be a foundation breed to what will be an annual event on the sheep showing calendar. It is a tremendous boost to see the re-establishment of the RDS classes (albeit a different location) which are held in nostaglic esteem by so many. This is the biggest Pedigree Texel Interflock Competition that is held annually and is judged across ten classes with the eventual Supreme Texel Champion being selected. We are delighted to confirm that our judge for the event is Mr. Henry Gamble of the much admired Springwell Flock from N.I. Judging will commence at 10am. For those intending to exhibit the first 1-6 placed in the Senior & Junior Ram Lamb Class and the Shearling Ram Class will qualify for an extra entry into the Premier Sale*) A commercial competition of crossbred sheep will also be held on the day, this will have an added attraction for many. A total prize fund of â‚Ź1500 is on offer for this competition. This is a great day and a fantastic show of both Pedigree and Commercial Texel sheep is assured!! *Qualifying rams must be entered into the Premier Sale and normal entry fees will apply. Premier Sale This year our first Show and Sale of the season will be held on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of August, at Blessington Livestock Mart, Co. Wicklow. The judging will commence at 2pm on Friday 10th, which will culminate in the awarding of the Premier Sale 2018 Male & Female Champions. The sale will commence at 10am on Saturday 11th. Females will be sold first followed immediatly by the ram sale. On the day there will be approximately 250 rams and 100 females offered for sale. A catalogue with full details will be available to download from our website or from the Society Secretary prior to sale. 6
National Flock Competiton Six regions have nominated three local shows in their area. Results from these shows will be tabulated throughout the show season and an eventual winner will be decided based on the total points awarded from attending the nominated shows. All nominated shows are open events and are therefore open to all members of the Society. A breeder who collects the most points from each region will be the regional finalist and the Overall winner will be announced at the AGM social in November. The Society actively encourages all its members to participate and support their local shows. National Livestock Show – Tullamore Tullamore Show is scheduled to take place on Sunday 12th August 2018 at the Butterfield Estate, Tullamore Co. Offaly. This is the biggest Livestock Show in the country. Texels have always had strong presence at this event, and the Irish Texel Sheep Society are proud to be sponsoring the majority of the Texel classes at this years show. National Ploughing Championships For the third consecutive year Screggan, Tullamore Co. Offaly has being selected as the 2018 venue. This three day event will take place from September 18th to 20th . We will be located in the NSBA sheep tunnel which always boasts a steady throughput of visitors over the three days. On our display, we will have Hiltex Ewes, Pedigree Rams, Texel Ewes and Cross-bred lambs. The ploughing championships is the ideal opportunity to come and discuss Texel Sheep with members of the Society at the stand and they can answer any questions you might have.

Wexford Win on Home Ground The sunny South East definitely was true to the saying at the 2017 Texel Growvite National Championships. 186 Pedigree Texel’s competed in blistering sunshine for the top titles. With speed and confidence Ms. Anna Minnice Hughes eventually selected a Ram Lamb UVI1701309 sired by Tophill Wallstreet and a Strathbogie Python ewe, bred by John Neville, Thornville Texel’s as her Supreme Champion. The dam was herself was 1st prize winning lamb at the 2013 National Championships. Reserve Supreme Champion was awarded to the winner of the Senior Ewe Lamb Class and the Female Championship winner DII1701294 out of Knock Yazoo and a Derrylahan bred sired Garngour Vintage ewe shown by Anthony Donnelly from Claremorris in Co. Mayo. Martin Walsh from Sligo definitely made his long trip worthwhile by securing the first place in the Senior Ram Class and also coming second in both the Aged Ewe Class and Novice Ram Class. In the Shearling ram class Anne Murphy was placed first with Foundry Yahoo, a son of Corbo Val Verde and a Chessy ewe. Liam Dillon from New Ross was placed 2nd in the Senior Ewe Lamb class with a daughter of Knap You’re the Man and an Oberstown Usain Bolt daughter, she sent on later to be the Reserve Female Champion of the day. The Reserve Male Champion title was awarded to the second placed Senior Ram Lamb FSE1701050 by Stainton Vantage II, exhibited by Fergal O’Sé, Tralee Co. Kerry. The sun was definitely shining for Anthony Donnelly who took the reds in three of the ewe classes. Initially Anthony was brought forward with a daughter of Knock Ursus DII16023 in the highly competitive Shearling Ewe class. His flashy Senior Ewe Lamb DII1701294 was selected by Ms. Minnice Hughes as her 1st prized ewe lamb, she eventually went on to become the Reserve Supreme Champion. This is the second consecutive year that Anthony has taken this title back to Co. Mayo! DII1701306, a daughter of Knock Yazoo and an Ettrick Rainbow warrior dam also took the Junior Ewe lamb title. Knock Yazoo also came up trumps for D&E McManamon in the Junior Ram Lamb Class with Derrylahan Alpha Male DEE1705544 coming out in Premier position. 11
In what were seen as the most ecstatic winners of the day the Novice classes were won by Tom Whelan Co. Wexford and Sean McGee Co Cavan. Tom and his grandchildren successfully exhibited a powerful ram lamb TWF1701762 Springbridge Alex by Thornville Winner. Sean McGee Co. Cavan displayed a classy daughter ZEI1701717 out of Tophill Wallstreet that was selected to be the first placed. The Gemma Doyle Memorial Cup was presented to David Craig, Clonard Co. Meath as the Junior Stockperson of the year 2017. During the judging interval all present were treated to some slow cooked Texel lamb meat burgers which definitely went down a treat and highlighted excellently the quality and taste of Texel lamb meat. Overall it was a tremendous day for the promotion of Texel Sheep in Ireland with all parts of the country represented and doing their part. Our Judge was extremely efficient and decisive in her selections throughout the day and wasted no time considering her decisions. The breeders of Co. Wexford have to be complemented for the effort that was put into organizing this event behind the scenes, and it was fitting that so many were then recognized on the day with their exhibits.

Texels prove perfect for early lamb production on Claffey’s farm “Texel sires are doing a fantastic job for us and we fully intend to continue using them in the future”. Tommy and Noel Claffey farm 100 acres in Ballinagore, Kilbeggan Co. Westmeath. The father and son team operate a mixed grazing enterprise consisting of a 125 ewe flock which are run in conjunction with a herd of 50 suckler cows.
Flock Management The Claffey’s are early season lamb producers and aim to produce high quality lambs for the Easter market. The ewe flock is made up of predominantly Suffolk cross ewes with a selection of Texel cross ewes included also. Lambing begins in the last days of December, ewes are housed 4 to 5 weeks before lambing and weather permitting are released to pasture within 10- 20 days post lambing. Tommy and Noel have off farm employment meaning they need a breed of lamb that requires as little assistance as possible, traits which they say Texel lambs possess in abundance while not compromising on quality. Tommy was quick to point out “Texel rams prove perfect for our system as both myself and Noel are working off farm, the lambs are full of the get up and go vigour that we desire. Lambs are quick to get up and suckle along 25
with minimal lambing difficulties; traits that we know are associated with Texel’s. Then when we get the ewes and lambs to grass the lambs continue to thrive with minimal labour required as Texel’s are known for their high worm resistance”. Ram selection When it comes to selecting flock sires, Tommy outlines that he demands a ram which will fullfill all the requirements to successfully mate his ewes in a short period of time. “We select our rams by assessing physical attributes such as muscle, power and length along with functionality and the ability to survive in the flock for multiple seasons. The Texel constantly delivers on these requirements”. Flock sires are generally purchased privately from established breeders while Society sales are also considered when new flock sires are required. Lamb sales The Claffey’s sell lambs both to local butchers and are part of the Longford Lamb producer group; both of these outlets demand high quality carcasses. All lambs on the farm are reared to slaughter, with breeding replacements purchased annually as hoggets from the West of Ireland. The use of terminal Texel rams allows them to produce high quality U grade lambs with excellent carcass characteristics. These characteristics include increased carcass weights, muscularity, and adequate fat cover from lambs slaughtered between 12 and 18 weeks of age. When released to pasture all lambs receive concentrate feeding to compliment grass, as lambs increase in age and concentrate and grass intake increases the Claffeys note that they find growth rates and feed conversion efficiencies superior in Texel’s than in other breeds which were kept on the farm in the past. Tommy continued that “We find Texel lambs perform very well in our system. Lambs on the farm are drafted at 40-42 kg with the aim of producing a 21kg carcass. The high kill out percentage of Texels allows these targets to be easily achieved at a young age”. Satisfaction The Claffey’s comment on the satisfaction they have with the Texel breed and the important role the breed plays within the family’s production system. Tommy and Noel’s satisfaction with the breed is clear from talking with them; “Why fix what is not broken, Texel sires are doing a fantastic job for us and we fully intend to continue using them in the future”. They finally concluded that “the Texel breed delivers the live weight performance we require while producing a carcass which is in high demand by the butchers and processors we provide with our lamb. The positive feedback and continued praise we receive is always encouraging”. 26

Irish Texel Society celebrate 5 fantastic in-lamb sales On the back of what can only be described as an exceptional season of in-lamb ewe sales across the country, it is with great anticipation we look forward to our 2018 shows and sales. The five society sales were met with exceptional demand and an exciting trade to match, with 300 in-lamb hogget ewes finding almost 100% clearance throughout. The ewes on offer were a credit to all venders and as a society we are both confident and excited as to what the future holds. These sales proved an excellent opportunity for existing breeders to add quality to their flock, while also providing the opportunity for many new breeders to establish flocks, bringing the society to over 360 registered breeders. Four breeders also very kindly donated a Pedigree female each with all proceeds going to their chosen charity. A total sum of ₏4,558 was donated from the sales. Some of the highlights and top prices from the five sales: Blessington Loy 17 from Arthur and Patrick O’Keefe sold for 2700gns:
29
Blessington Mart kicked off the in-lamb sales on Saturday December 2nd. This proved a huge success with a full clearance on the day and a total sale average of 750gns. Arthur & Patrick O'Keeffe topped the sale at 2700gns for Lot 17, a Claybury Warrior daughter. This ewe was only shown once this year where she was placed 2nd in the Growvite National Texel Championships, an exceptional well bodied gimmer she sold scanned carrying twins to Arkle You star. Next best on the day was from Anthony Donnelly when he received 2400gns for Lot 45. A full sister to this year’s 1st prize shearling ewe at the Growvite National Championships, sired by Knock Ursus this one sold carrying twins to the fantastic breeding Knock Yazoo. The O'Keeffe's were back up again with lot 19 for the third best price of the day at 2000gns. This ewe was also a prolific show winner this year where she was Reserve champion at Tullamore Show. Sired by Knock Trident, she sold carrying twins to the sire of the top priced ewe on the day. The ewe kindly donated by the Ryan's for Cancer Awareness Charity sold for 950gns. Western Region Lot 11, Champion ewe sold for 1500gns by Eric Cambell
Next stop was Roscommon mart for the Western Region Texel sale on the 8th of December. This proved another exciting sale with almost full clearance and a very lively trade. 30

A Kiltarriff Vigilante daughter and out of the flocks best ewe, noted for winning Western Region Overall champion twice, this flashy ewe sold carrying twins to Kilcurley Ace. John Brookes then took the next two best prices with the first and last ewe into the ring. Lot 1 set the pace and got the sale of to a flyer when she was finally knocked down at 1000gns. Sired by the 40000gns Mullan Vivaldi and carrying twins to Mullan Avatar this one will be an exciting prospect for the successful purchaser. John then closed the sale of with the second top price of the day when he sold lot 47 for 1200gns. Another ewe with fantastic back breeding, sired by the former UK sire of the year Glenside Razzle Dazzle and this time carrying twins to Valhalla, she concluded what was an excellent sale for the region. Donegal Texel Breeders Lot 24 from Neville Myles selling for 1300gns:

The next two best prices came from the same home, firstly, lot 17 was sold for 2800gns, again out of Won-O-Won and carrying twins to A Class, this powerful ewe was out of a very successful flush that saw her sister winning numerous shows this summer and two brothers sold to pedigree flocks in Ireland. Then came lot 20 at 2000gns, sired by Stainton Vantage II and one of the only ewes offered in lamb, carrying twins to the exciting Garngour Aerosmith purchased in Lanark this year. A ewe carrying an embryo was offered up for charity by Ronan Gallagher; she sold for 420gns and along with raffle tickets sold brought the total raised to ₏1,215 for the North West Hospice. Cootehill Pat and Barry Farrell’s Lot 30 which sold for top price of 2200gns:
The Twilight sale in Cootehill Livestock Mart on the 29th of December wrapped up the year on a high note when a large crowd attended the second annual sale, and the high demand continued with another great sale averaging 737gns per head. 33

Newport butchers “Keane” on Texel’s Keane’s Meats The Keane family from Newport, Co. Mayo run a family butcher shop alongside their Glenaileann and Glenvale pedigree Texel flocks. The family butcher shop was opened in 1984, when Sean purchased a small premises on the Main Street. The business was built and started from there and in 2004 he purchased the premises next door. After months of work and preparation to make this a modern eye catching butchers, the new shop was opened and has gone from strength to strength. We pride ourselves in having a warm welcoming atmosphere and quality meats and with this nobody leaves without a smile on their face. Newport is located in the heart of The Great Western Greenway and offers stunning views of the islands in Clew Bay and the Nephin mountains along such an enjoyable cycle towards Mulrannny. The Greenway brings a great buzz to the town. What started as a local butcher shop has since expanded and is now a booming enterprise incorporating a mobile shop servicing local areas and employing Sean’s brother Richard, sister Ann, son Shane and fellow colleague Andrez, not to forget his wife Mary who is the woman behind it all keeping the farm going. Shane was delighted to comment about all their produce being sourced locally and that it continues to meet the highest standards. “I think that here on the West coast of Ireland we can produce lamb that has its very own authentic Mayo flavour ‘sea sprayed lamb’. We have a steady custom, coming from 49
far and wide especially for this fabulous product, not to mention our award winning homemade sausages, puddings, burgers, as well as our very popular lamb burgers ”. Texel lambs prove perfect for the Keane’s, so much so that they decided to establish their own pedigree flocks in 2012 and 2014 respectively. “The Texel breed has come on leaps and bounds in the last number of years because of demand for their ability to reach heavier weights with sufficient carcass cover but remaining lean. The Texel is renowned for their larger legs and a greater eye muscle, both traits which we would be looking for in our killing lambs”. Keane’s Meats supply many local restaurants and hotels which require larger cuts of meat. “The Texel carcass has the perfect balance, the loin is the most valuable cut and the Texel provides a length and depth of loin that other breeds can’t compare with”.
50
Glenaileann and Glenvale Texel’s Having seen the huge benefits that the Texel sheep possess Shane and David established a Texel flock each in 2012 and 2014, respectively. With foundation ewes purchased from Derrylahan, Ballbrooney and Enniscrone flocks, the Keane’s were so impressed with the pedigree Texel’s had to offer “We decided to expand our flocks purchasing from Garngour, Teiglum, Milnbank and Cambwell, all of which have done very well in our flock and we hope to continue to expand” Not alone are the Texels doing the business on the pedigree side of the farm, they also run a commercial flock of Texel x ewes. Some of these are used for commercial lambs which are all slaughtered through their own shop, with the others kept for embryo transfer recipients. “Our future plans are to continue to improve the quality of both our commercial and pedigree flock, producing top quality lambs for our shop, and pedigree rams that will hopefully go on to breed excellent quality lambs for slaughter for other farmers”

The QualEUtex Lamb Producer Group formed just over two year's ago after an approach made by Michael Geoghegan and Bertie Mannion of Kepak, Athleague with a couple of local producers to see if it were possible to source more Texel and Beltex lambs to satisfy a niche market they had with some Belgian customers. Following a number of meetings between a core group of Texel and Beltex lamb producers and Kepak management a deal was struck and as they say the rest is history. In money terms the bonus of 35c /kg extra for an E2 or E3 grade lamb can add an extra 7 to 8 euros at optimum weight while the bonus of 30c /kg extra for a U2 or U3 grade lamb can add an extra 6 to 7 euros at optimum weight above R3 grade price depending on time of year. Any lamb falling outside these grades or the specified weight bands which changes throughout the year will be paid at the going rate for that weight and grade on the day in Kepak. Numbers of lambs coming through the group have more than doubled in our second year in existence and membership numbers now exceed 100. The general feedback we have been getting from members is very positive and in fairness to Kepak they deserve a lot of praise for instigating this development. It comes at a time when they have made huge investment in their Lamb and Beef processing plant in Athleague which would indicate a confidence in the trade going forward.

Anthony holding a texel x lamb typical of what he produces.
One such member is Anthony Moran from Tibarney, Mount Talbot, Co Roscommon. Anthony runs a mixed enterprise of sheep, sucklers and horses together with his wife Imelda. With a keen eye for quality he is no stranger to the showing ring and has won many red rosettes for his weanlings. An Agri Lloyd agent in his spare time he also has a keen interest in breeding dogs which I suppose is no surprise as his father Dan who recently celebrated his 100th birthday excelled in training sheep dogs. The 220 strong flock they run are made up of Texel ewes crossed with a Blue Leicester ram and then crossed back with a Suffolk ram to produce what Anthony describes as the ideal ewe. They have size, shape and milkiness with a good litter size which makes them ideal for crossing back with Texel. the vast majority of Anthony's lambs qualified for the Qualeutex bonus with a very good % of E grades on these. Anthony creep feeds his lambs and in hindsight particularly in the year gone by this paid off big time.He decided with the higher kill out of his Texel x lambs coupled with the higher bonus joining the group was pretty much a no brainer. He always buys pedigree Texel rams and has been more than impressed with how clean and shapey the progeny are compared to any other breed he has used. With the introduction of the Clean Lamb policy at the start of the year, this he sees as another plus in choosing Texel. From seeing the resulting lambs on the ground he is definitely going the right way about it. 54
Anthony Moran in Kepak, Athleague with a consignment of lambs he sent through our group last year.
One of Anthony's ewes with a March born texel triplet lamb at foot.
He says he has no bother in getting premium prices for ewe lambs at home after he has picked out replacements for his own flock in the back end of the year. Somehow I'm not surprised. Anthony gets text updates twice weekly from the group coordinator on prices and other related matter which he finds useful. Kepak kill for the group on Mondays and Thursdays with the exception of bank holidays when the kill moves to Tuesday. Lambs going through the group must be from farm of origin and must be the progeny of a pedigree registered Texel or Beltex ram. Lambs may be dropped off at the secure lairage the evening before if morning delivery doesn't suit. Bookings for the group must be made via the coordinator. West Region Club Report 2017 We commenced the year with an extremely successful Open Day at John Brooks’ farm. 25 members from the region assembled with a selection of their sheep at John’s farm where we were joined by a group from the north of England. We had a lovely meal (and a drink or two!) with our visitors and we had entertainment from a local group “Comáin” who gave a fabulous display of Traditional Irish music, singing and Sean nós dancing. We had a novel method of judging on the day, where each of our visitors selected their top 3 sheep in each category. Points were awarded and a “Visitors Choice” was given for the highest points in each class. We were joined later in the day by members of the Society from other regions. Huge thanks are due to John, Bernie & Ellie Brooks and family for their help.

The show flock was on display along with the rest of the breeding stock. John Foster gave a very informative and educational talk on his ideas for Texel breeding. Graham also showed us some stock from his Charollais and Blue Texel flocks. We had a lovely barbeque and refreshments. Many thanks to the Foster family for their hospitality.

Hilltex ewes the all-round performer for Laois farmer “As you get on in years you learn that it is very important to find a ewe that suits your system and requires minimal labour but still provides you with exceptional quality offspring” James Bennett farms up to 900ft above sea level in Moher West near Mountrath in Co. Laois, with the help of his son Phillip. The Bennetts run an impressive mixed enterprise consisting of 170 Hilltex ewes, suckler cows, store cattle and a large area of planted forestry. James previously ran mainly Cheviot ewes, while buying in full mouth horned ewes and mating them with Texel rams, taking one crop off them before fattening them and killing them along with the lambs in the summer time. “It was more by accident than anything I started using the Hilltex ewe. In 2011 I was short of replacements and decided to keep all the Texel ewe lambs out of the horned ewes. I was amazed by the way they performed in our system and haven’t looked back since with all ewes now Hilltex bred”
74
James started to buy his replacements 5 years ago at the annual sale in Ballinrobe and has been returning every year since. James spoke with great enthusiasm about the Hilltex ewes and plans to continue going to the sale in the future for all his replacements. Having been farming for over 50 years in Moher West he believes he has now found a perfect ewe for his system. “These ewes are constantly impressing me year on year. In my opinion they are the ideal maternal ewe, hardy and easy to keep, not too big allowing for higher stocking rates, docile to work with and as you get on in years you learn that it is very important to find a ewe that suits your system and requires minimal labour but still provides exceptional quality” The ewes scanned very well this year. With an impressive 1.78 lambs per ewe joined with the ram. This was no surprise to James as he stated they were constantly achieving such scans. “This is one of my favourite things about the Hiltex ewes. They are a very fertile ewe producing plenty of lambs without the large numbers of triplets associated with other maternal breeds. I only let out the ram for 32 days and then take him away to reduce the lambing spread. I have only 3 barren ewes this year out of 172. I can’t complain about that” Lambing usually starts on the 17th of March on Bennett’s farm, however, James made the decision to push that back until the 28th this year. Something he is very happy with following the terrible winter we just encountered. All lambing takes place outdoors, something that proves the Hilltex ewe processes superior mothering ability while carrying the great get up and go associated with the Texel breed through to her lambs. “I start feeding 75
a small amount of meal 3 weeks before lambing. This will increase to 500g per head the week before lambing. This is to ensure adequate colostrum for lambs and give them the best chance to get going. The Hilltex ewes are generally very milky and require minimal assistance at lambing, two traits which are essential when lambing outdoors”. James uses a mix of rams mainly Charolais and Beltex and finds they all cross very well on the Hilltex ewes. “I find these ewes are ideal to cross back to any terminal bred ram. We take all lambs to slaughter. The lambs readily achieve close to 50% killout and can be finished to suit several different markets. We kill the first lambs which finish at 41-42kg reaching the targeted 19-21kg carcass whilst frequently receiving a bonus for the lambs as they grade E’s and U’s. The superior grading lean carcass allows us to carry these lambs to heavier weights as the year goes on producing more muscle without the risk of them becoming overfat”. James finished with some very positive feedback stating the longevity and economical value that is on offer from these ewes. “Some of the first Hilltex ewes I brought into the flock in 2011 are still going strong. They are very hardy, have good mouths and lovely correct and firm udders. It will be interesting to see how long they can last. Like myself, they are getting on in years, but aslong as they continue to produce the goods with minimal labour required there will be a place for them here and the Hilltex ewe will be in Moher West for the foreseeable future. Why fix what isn’t broken?”

Donegal Texel Club Report Premier Show & Sale, Blessington The Donegal Texel Breeders enjoyed another successful weekend at the Irish Texel Sheep Society’s Premier Show and Sale at Blessington Livestock Mart, Co. Wicklow. John Greene’s Larahirl flock is well known for turning out superb sheep, but it was his daughters Chaylee and Lorinne who, on their debut at the sale, upstaged their father with their ET born tup lamb Greenstar Alfie. This lamb, having been awarded the Novice class and Supreme Overall Championship the evening before by Judge Mr. John Mellin (Hull House Texels), drew plenty of pre-sale attention and it was standing room only when this Tophill Wall Street sired lamb out of a Duncryne Uber Cool ewe entered the ring. After a flurry of bids Alfie went on to sell to the Scottish based Milnbank, Strathbogie and Seaforde flocks for €17,000gns – the third highest selling price ever obtained at an Irish Premier Sale. John Greene also enjoyed a bumper sale selling two full brothers of the champion. His first lamb into the ring, Larahirl Alphonso, sold for €5,700gns to the Donegal based flocks of Rodney McLaughlin and Roger Doherty whilst Larahirl A-Lister sold for €2,600gns to Noel Gallagher’s Agricare flock. The Greene family’s good day continued when they sold Larahirl All-Star, a Strathbogie Yabba Dabba Do bred son out of home bred ewe by Fairwater Tribute for €2,200gns to Pascal Keogh’s Co. Meath based Mullagharoy flock. Not a bad day’s work at the office for the Greene family! Other Donegal based flocks to have a good day included the McHugh Bros’ Speenogue flock from Burt when they sold Speenogue Alonso, a Cressage Yankee bred son, for €3,000gns to Flor Ryan’s Lawn and John Donohoe’s Ballybur flocks whilst William Doherty’s Hillcrest flock sold Hillcrest Armstrong, another son of Tophill Wall Street out of a Sportsmans Superstar 88
bred dam, for €2,400gns to Co. Cork breeders Eddie and Sheena McCarthy. Shane McHugh’s Dunfanaghy based Figart flock was also in the money when he sold Figart Ace for €1,900gns to Tom Kenny’s Hillswood flock. This lamb was sired by Mac’s Wannabee out of a homebred ewe by Milnbank Ulex.
Speenogue Alonso
Raphoe August Sale Our annual August sale, held in conjunction with the Irish Texel Sheep Society, enjoyed another successful night at Raphoe Livestock Mart with no fewer than eight lots breaking the €1,000gns barrier. Adrian Liggett of the Fintona based Corbo flock was given the enviable task of judging the event with more than 115 sheep on show. Following on from their recent success at the Irish Premier sale in Blessington, it was Chaylee & Lorinne Greene making the headlines once again – this time with Greenstar Alonzo, a full ET brother to the €17,000gns Greenstar Alfie, sired by Tophill Wall Street and out of a Duncryne Uber Cool ewe. This one was purchased by a syndicate of Donegal breeders led by James McGrath, Collar Rock Texels for €2,100gns. Not to be outdone by his daughters, John Green’s Larahirl flock also produced the goods when he sold Larahirl A-Team, a Millar’s Windbrook son, for €1,850gns to Aiden Loftus’ Deelvale flock from Co. Mayo. The high quality of rams on offer was also evident when John sold the Male and Overall Champion on the night, Larahirl Yours Truly, sired by Tamnamoney Walter, for €1,180gns whilst two further Larahirl shearling rams, also sired by Walter, sold for €1,220gns and €1,100gns. Reserve Champion on the night was obtained by John McLoone’s Glenties based Tullyard flock with his champion ram lamb, Tullyard Achilles, sired by the €8,000gns Gailey Yesterday purchased by John at last year’s Blessington sale. Out of a homebred Sportman’s Superstar sired ewe, he sold for €1,400gns to the judge, Adrian Liggett. It was also a night to remember for Mervyn & Anna Boal when their sole entry, a shearling ram sired by Claybury Warrior, sold to Dessie Graham, Laghey, Co. Donegal for €1,280gns. 89
The last ram to break the €1,000gns barrier was from John McGee’s Muckish flock when his 2nd prize shearling ram, Muckish Yard Stick, sired by the 2014 All Ireland Champion Strathbogie Uno, sold early in the sale for €1,000gns to Lee McKinney, Co. Donegal. Other leading prices (all gns): John McLoone, Tullyard - €660; J&C McHugh, Greenhill - €820, €800, €680; Malachy Byrne, Ballymagowan - €820; Shane McHugh, Figart - €810, €760, €750, €720; William Doherty, Hillcrest - €850, €800, €760 (x2); Peter McLaughlin, Isle - €620; Seamus McGrath, Clarecarrick - €760; Niall Brennan, Grange - €640; Stuart McKeague, Claggan - €780, €660; Stuart Parke, Glenkeerin - €640; McHugh Bros, Speenogue - €700; Noel Gallagher, Agri-Care - €600; Rodney McLaughlin, Clara - €980, €700, €600 (x2); John McGee, Muckish - €850, €720, €600

National Hall of Fame
National Hall of Fame - Arthur O' Keeffe, Annakisha Texels
The Annakisha Texel Flock was established in 1977 with the purchase of four ewes from the Deptartment of Agriculture. Working closely with his father, Arthur Snr, the Texel flock which was run in conjunction with a Suffolk flock enjoyed much success at local and national shows. The flock was the winner of the Supreme Texel Champion at the RDS National Championships on various occasions in the late eighties and into the ninties. The Texels proved to be a very good sire for the black Suffolk Cross ewes in the commercial flock and vice versa. However with the untimely death of his father in 1992 sheep numbers had to be reduced and showing of Texels was curtailed until 2001, when the Annakisha Flock was re-established by Arthur and his son Patrick who has a very keen interest in Texels. Arthur also runs a 150 cow dairy herd as well as a beef enterprise with the help of his family. Since 2001 a greater emphasis has been put on genetics in developing the breed characteristics within the flock and a number of top sires have been used through AI. These included the breed record priced Deveronvale Perfection who was sold for 220,000 gns. He left very good 92
females in the flock while a sons of his, Cairness Rags to Riches, which was purchased at Kelso proved a very successful sire for the Annakisha Flock siring the Reserve Champion at the 2011 Premier Show & Sale in Blessington. 2011 also saw the Annakisha Flock win Male Champion and Reserve Overall Champion at the All Ireland Championships held in Kilkenny while Reserve Female Champion was won in 2010 and 2012. This was followed on by winning the Reserve Male Champion in 2014 and 2016. In 2010 a ram lamb from the Annakisha Flock went all the ways at the Premier Show & Sale in Blessington winning Supreme Champion. The pen also had the top average at the sale. Subsequently the flock won the Champion Group of 3 ram lambs in 2013 and 2014 and also had the Reserve Supreme Champion in 2014 at the Premier Show & Sale. Annakisha Texels have also enjoyed great success at the National Livestock Show in Tullamore winning Supreme Champion in 2012 and 2013 and Reserve Supreme in 2014 and 2016. It also won the Supreme Champion title at the Golden Shear Championships in Gorey in 2014. In recent times some quality females have been purchased from Claybury, Chessy and Forkins and females are sold annually at a joint production sale with other top flocks. Gimmers have sold up to 2,600gns and it’s pleasing to see that they have bred very well for the purchasers. Arthur is a firm believer that breeders must work hard for the Society of which they are members, in order for the Society is to be able to deliver for its members. Not one to shirk his responsibility he became Chairman of the Irish Texel Sheep Society in 2014 having been a member of National Texel Council for four years prior to his election. While Chairman, in 2016 the Society celebrated its 40th Anniversary at different events throughout the country. Arthur would like to take this opportunity to express his thanks to the Society’s secretary Sinéad Brophy and the many breeders who work hard to showcase this breed up and down the country.

This topped off a hugely successful showing for the North Connacht region, where a total of 7 red rosettes were taken home by breeders from the region! We, as a region, would like to compliment and thank the South-East region for a very enjoyable and well-organised event. Texel’s adding profit for Glen Keen tourism farm “The Hilltex lambs are achieving double the prices previously achieved by that of our blackface hill lamb, with the same amount of farm efforts” Glen Keen Farm is nestled with a majestic backdrop of Mweelrea along the Wild Atlantic Way just 10km from Louisburgh in Co.Mayo. Catherine O’Grady-Powers and her American Husband Jim Powers were invited to leave their life of aviation in the United States to return to Glen Keen and take over the family farm in 2000. The farm is steeped in history with Catherine’s grandmother Margaret O’Grady previously run a very successful farm at Glen Keen until she passed away in 1970.
111
Shortly after taking over the large farm, Catherine soon realised that this Blackface farm was not viable as a stand alone business and decided to embrace tourism and investigate other ways of sustainability. In 2014, in conjunction with the Wild Atlantic Way, Glen Keen farm visitor attraction was opened. The business has grown steadily and has welcomed almost 35,000 visitors in its third season. The business was built with a focus on the coach tour market where visitors enjoy; sheepdog herding, sheep shearing, agricultural group visits, immersive traditional turf-cutting and farm style lunch to include the Glen Keen Farm lamb dishes. This has led to both Catherine and Glen Keen Farm achieving awards of excellence, including awards for exceeding customer expectations in 2015, 2016 & 2017.
112
Catherine decided in 2015 they needed to produce a more profitable lamb. They firstly selected 100 blackface ewes to breed with two Texel rams as a trial run. Catherine added: “The rams performed very well successfully mating 91 of the ewes and producing a high percentage of couples which proved a huge success resulting in high profits for the farm. The Hilltex lambs are achieving double the prices previously achieved by that of our blackface hill lamb, with the same amount of farm efforts”. Initially Catherine and Jim were concerned about the lambing process in terms of care and observation of a Blackface ewe producing a larger lamb. However, Catherine was delighted as she explained: “The Blackface ewes are treated exactly as they have always been, no extra measures were needed. The cross has proved to be an excellent fit for our system. It has worked out perfect, we have had minimal lambing difficulties and coupled with vigorous lambs which show fantastic get up and go. We are absolutely delighted with this easy solution that has resulted in increased profits for the farm”. In 2017 Catherine and Jim added two more pedigree Texel ram lambs to Glen Keen, and all ewes will be mated to Texel rams in the future. Catherine stated; “that the introduction of Texel rams has provided the farm with a very positive outlook and it is an area that they intend to further develop at Glen Keen, it is a win, win with minimal investment and great rewards” Future plans include the development of food tourism, educational tourism and research into sheep wool products. South West TEXEL report 2017 proved to be a positive and successful year for Texels in the South West. I would like to congratulate all the exhibitors and breeders in our region. It is not an easy task for breeders to turn out pedigree sheep at shows and sales and at the same time maintain their stock at peak condition. A special mention to our new and younger breeders. The turn out at our regional championships was heartening. More importantly the standard of sheep presented is improving steadily. Sales during the year were up and down and while our club sale in Milltown was a mixed bag, quality sheep sold well. Congratulations to Arthur and Patrick O’Keeffe for having the champion on the night and Robert Walker stood reserve. Crowds were up on other years and this definitely had something to do with the fact that the sale was Multibreed. The society sale in Roscrea again was a Multibreed. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our show winners in all classes from our club to regional championships to the All-Ireland
117
Championships that were successfully held in Gorey this year. Special congratulations are due to both Arthur and Patrick O’Keeffe for winning the Show Flock of the year for the second year in a row. The society’s AGM was held in Firgrove hotel in Mitchelstown in November. It was great to see the attendance up on previous years and the buffet meal afterwards was enjoyed by all. As I’m writing this report, sheep trade is buoyant and hopefully it will remain so for the year ahead as it has been a horrendously long, hard and wet winter for all farmers across the board. Please God the worst of it is over. Mar Fhocal Scoir, we would like to congratulate young James Keane on his many young handlers awards during the show year!

North East Texel Club Report The North East Club had a successful and enjoyable year in promoting and selling Texel sheep in the Region. Club membership continues to grow as is the popularity of the Texel breed among commercial sheep farmers. The highlight event of the year was a visit to the Foster family’s Springhill Flocks, near Castlederg in Co Tyrone. Here, members were shown a flock of tremendous quality ewes and their offspring. John, aided by his sons Graham and Robbie, gave us a detailed insight to Springhill’s breeding strategies and the overall management of their flocks. Members were most impressed with the quality of the stock on show and, following the visit, quite a few introduced Springhill genetics into their own flocks. We are grateful to the Foster family, John, his wife Helga plus sons Graham and Robbie and daughter Alice for the huge effort and hospitality given in ensuring we all had a most memorable farm visit. Texel Growvite All-Ireland Championships The Region was very well represented at this prestigious competition which was held in beautiful sunshine in Gorey, Co. Wexford, on the 17th June 2017. Sean Mc Gee, who had a very successful year, took 1st place in the Novice Ewe lamb class, with a ewe lamb sired by ‘Tophill Wallstreet’. This was as a result of accumulating the most points from wining Texel classes at our nominated shows. Sean exhibited some wonderful stock at all our nominated shows and indeed his presence was seen at many other shows in the North East. Congratulations also to the Greenhill Flock who bred Greenhill Yemen Boy. Yemen Boy was awarded the Irish Texel Sire of the Year award having sired the three top priced rams at Society sales in 2017 for Anne Murphy’s Foundry flock. North East Sales The club held three ram sales in the North East Region. In all three centres there was a brisk demand for good commercial animals with high €Star animals commanding a premium. These sales confirm the trend of Texels gaining in popularity and are now the number one choice of ram breed for commercial sheep farmers in the region. The station road Mart in Cootehill has now become established as a successful venue for the sale of Pedigree Texel sheep. Shearling Rams averaged €550 and Ram Lambs €450.Top price on the day went to Sean McGee for ‘Navac Abide’ a 5 Star Ram lamb selling for €775. Carnaross had a brisk trade for quality commercial stock with prices ranging from €400 -€500. Castleblaney was the last sale of the year in late September. The quality of some stock on offer was somewhat back on the previous sales but despite this there were customers willing to pay good money for suitable ram lambs. 127
Cootehill Twilight Sale The Twilight sale of in-lamb hogget ewes in Cootehill Livestock Mart on the 29th of December wrapped up the year on a high note when a large crowd attended the second annual sale, and the high demand continued with another great sale averaging 737gns per head. Pat and Barry Farrell produced the top three priced females of the sale this year to give them an average of 1650gns. Topping the sale was lot 30 when she was purchased for 2200gns, sired by the 85,000gns, ‘Cornmore Velvet Jacket’, this sparkey ewe sold to Robert Walker carrying to Arkle A1. Next from the Farrell’s was the 2000gns call for lot 61 purchased by Pascal Keogh, sired by ‘Proctors Ventura’ and selling scanned with Twins to ‘Strathbogie Yabba Dabba Doo’. They continued their exceptional trade on the evening with the third best price when the secured 1720gns for lot 5 from John Foster who had bought their top priced Ewe in 2016. This ewe was again sired by ‘Velvet Jacket’ and carrying twins to ‘Yabba DabbaDoo’. The Farrell’s ended the night by generously offering lot 35, a pedigree ewe lamb, for their chosen charity The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, which raised €1,380 and thanks to the generosity of our members we were able to hand over a cheque for €2600 to this worthy charity. At our AGM two of our distinguished Texel Breeders Michael Mc Hugh (secretary) and Peter Gibbons (treasurer) who have both given outstanding service to the Society over the years did not seek re-election. We thank them for their hard work and dedication in promoting the breed and we wish them ever success in the future. We congratulate Michael Donohoe who was elected Secretary and Enda Quirke as Treasurer for the coming year and finally a word of thanks to Sinead Brophy our Society Secretary for all her help during the year. New breeders should generally buy their foundation stock at Society Sales, these commence in August. In-lamb sales are held in November and December. All sheep sold through these sales have been passed by Society Inspectors as being properly identified and as having no inherent faults. If breeders purchase stock privately from other breeders either in Ireland, Northern Ireland or Britain they should ensure that they are identified 140
properly. Pedigree stock should be free from obvious faults, such as wrong mouths, bad legs, black patches on the wool or brown hair on the head and legs. Such privately bought sheep will be liable to inspection and if considered unsuitable, will be removed from the Society flock book. All flock owners are actively encouraged to participate in the Lambplus breed improvement scheme run by Sheep Ireland. All members of the Society are automatically members of Sheep Ireland as the Irish Texel Sheep Society are using the online flock book and database facilities of Sheep Ireland. On joining the Society, each new breeder is assigned their own unique 3 letter flock code. New flock codes are also given a prefix usually of the breeder’s choice. This flock code and prefix are unique for each flock and are used in naming any rams born into the flock. .
