music is not only possible— it runs in my veins. Celebrating this incredibly important part of my heritage and musicmaking is central to my identity.”

The Grammy-winning composer and bandleader Arturo O’Farrill led a three-night exploration of Afro-Latin and Irish traditional music with his 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and special guests Heather Bixler and David Bixler.

After a research and development residency at IAC in 2022, choreographer John Scott and composer and musician Mel Mercier, with support from Patricia Lent of Merce Cunningham Trust, brought together nine international dance and music artists for the world premiere of Begin Anywhere in our JL Greene Theatre, followed by an Irish tour in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick.

“Staged as a radio news show, [Colin] Murphy’s play is as insightful as it is funny—and it’s chillingly resonant in our current climate. The United States vs Ulysses reminds us that we must cherish—and protect—our beliefs in liberty of thought [and] the uncensored exchange of ideas.”

Colum McCann joined moderator Dan Barry in conversation at the U.S. launch of his latest novel, Twist, and a “terrific, shapeshifting” (The Irish Times) cast brought Colin Murphy’s The United States vs Ulysses to life at its North American premiere.

Endgame is the tragicomic tale of a man living with his parents and his servant in a world beyond time and place. With nowhere to go and not much to do, they spend their days telling stories and contemplating the absurdity of life.

Directed by Garry Hynes, the first woman to win the Tony Award for Best Director.

Presented with generous sponsorship support from the Jerome L. Greene Foundation. Additional generous support provided by Culture Ireland and The Brandt Jackson Foundation. Further support from season partner Tourism Ireland, Howard Gilman Foundation, the Shubert Foundation, the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, Inc., and Alan Klein.

“Irish Arts Center is a huge influence on the work I do as an artist and as an activist. To see commitment to culture and artistic expression be the guiding light of an institution, and to see that commitment change the physical course of New York history, makes it possible for us to imagine the possibilities!”

The City Changes Its Face

Thursday, September 18

For more info: irishartscenter.org

It’s 1995. Outside their grimy window, the city rushes by. But in the flat there is only Stephen and Eily. Their bodies, the tangled sheets. Unpacked boxes stacked in the kitchen and the total obsession of new love. But eighteen months later, they face a reckoning for all that’s been left unspoken—emotions, secrets and ambitions. Tonight, if they are to find one another again, what must be said aloud?

The award-winning author of A Girl is a Half-formed Thing discusses her latest novel—as dark, transgressive, and stylistically exciting as anything she’s written—with author Megan Nolan.

William Keohane Boxing Day

Thursday, December 4

Following its 2022 debut at Belfast’s Ulster Museum and a 20-location UK and European tour, William Keohane’s Boxing Day, a series of 52 poems exploring transition, confinement, and time, comes to IAC as a satellite event to our 16th annual PoetryFest. The Boxing Day performance is a year of a life—condensed into an hour of time, a poem for each week—in which Keohane interrogates the relationship between the poet and audience and offers a fragmentary glimpse into the experience of gender transition.

“Does it matter who listens? If they hear at all? I could speak the words to a skull in the woods. They could nest in the idle bone where a mind should be. They could sleep in a small thing that once was alive.”

How do you have sex on stage? How do you even have sex?

To try and find an answer, each night, two brand new performers tell a story of desire, betrayal, and loneliness. They have never rehearsed together or read the script. They are strangers. But they are not alone—they are joined on stage by an intimacy director, trained in the art of teaching people how to touch. So you can rest assured that the sex will be safe. It will be consensual. And it will be good.

The New 51st

With significant funds raised, we have begun design of the redevelopment of our 51st Street home. Once again, we are working with architects at Davis Brody Bond/A Page Company, who designed Phase One, to complete the vision we began together more than a decade ago.

You’ve probably noticed those double doors beckoning at the far end of the new facility—we can’t wait to recapture the intimacy we all remember with a venue on the scale of our historic home, with the flexibility and capability we have gained with the new. More live music, literature events, and larger classes await, along with artist residencies, community events, and a few surprises!

Street

We hope you will consider supporting our campaign, not only to complete the new IAC, but also to grow our endowment and reserves. Please see the next page to learn about great naming opportunities to commemorate your support, and stay tuned for more information as together we secure the future of Irish Arts Center for generations to come.

Recognition and Naming

There are many wonderful recognition opportunities available to commemorate your support for the new Irish Arts Center. Gifts may be pledged over multiple years. Please consider a donation at any level—we invite everyone to make history with us!

For more information, please contact Barry Ó Séanáin, director of development, at 212-757-3318 x226.

Our Commitment to Antiracism and Equity

Irish Arts Center stands with our BIPOC family, friends, and colleagues against racism, discrimination, and violence. We continue to work toward providing an environment in which the work of artists can help forge the common ground that brings us together, and where people of all backgrounds are welcome and equal. We seek to approach that mission with humility, and to listen and learn from those whose lived experience is different from our own.

About Irish Arts Center

Irish Arts Center, founded in 1972 and based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, is a home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds who share a passion or appreciation for the evolving arts and culture of contemporary Ireland and Irish America. We present, develop, and celebrate work from established and emerging artists and cultural practitioners, providing audiences with emotionally and intellectually engaging experiences in an environment of Irish hospitality. Steeped in grassroots traditions, we also provide community education programs and access to the arts for people of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2021, through a historic partnership between the people of Ireland and New York, Irish Arts Center completed construction on a fully-funded $60MM state-of-the-art new facility to support this mission for the 21st century.

What fills my heart? lingering longer!

Sometimes the most meaningful journeys aren’t measured in miles, but in moments. Whether it’s sipping tea in a quiet village café, tracing ancient footsteps on a coastal trail, or spending an afternoon in easy conversation with a local - this is travel that lingers.

In Ireland’s unhurried corners, you’ll find beauty that asks nothing of you but presence. From Donegal’s open skies to the winding roads of West Cork. You’ll experience the serendipity of being exactly where you need to be.

So come on, fill your heart with Ireland...
