★★★★ THE GUARDIAN THE TIMES THE IRISH INDEPENDENT

April 11–May 12 For more info: irishartscenter.org

The clock is ticking. It’s April 1998 and the main political parties in Northern Ireland, the British government and the Irish government, all under the watchful eye of Senator George Mitchell, try to hammer out a deal that could pave the way for peace in Northern Ireland. This is the last chance, and no one is leaving until agreement is reached one way or another.

Distillation A Luke Casserly, Solas Nua and Abbey Theatre production Written and performed by Luke Casserly

★★★★ “This ode to our landscape will give you a new perspective on Ireland’s bogs. All of the senses are engaged: not just sight and hearing but also touch, smell and even taste.” THE IRISH TIMES

June 7–9

A performative journey that takes you to the Irish bog landscape through scent.

For more info: irishartscenter.org

Distillation is a response to the recent cessation of the peat harvesting industry in Ireland. Over the past year, Luke Casserly has collaborated with renowned perfume maker Joan Woods to create a unique distillation of the Midlands bog—the place where he grew up—as the starting point for an olfactory encounter that looks at our human relationship to place.

Commissioned by Solas Nua in Washington, D.C. Supported by Goethe-Institut Irland and Dublin Theatre Festival. Developed through the support of an Arts Council Theatre Project Award.

June 13–23 Written and performed by Panti Bliss Directed by Phillip McMahon Produced by Jennifer Jennings and Laura Rigney For more info: irishartscenter.org

After a lifetime of accidental activism, far-fetched shenanigans and making a full time show of herself, notorious drag queen Panti Bliss—the “Queen of Ireland”—is now taking a moment to question her purpose and place in this changing world. Expect salacious stories, impassioned production polemics, and some seriously funny soul searching as Panti takes us from rural Mayo to London’s West End, where along the way the answer to her question presents itself where she least expects it.

February 14–March 3 Featuring Jean Butler, Tom Cashin, Marion Cronin, Colin Dunne, Kristyn Fontanella, James Greenan, Kaitlyn Sardin, Maren Shanks, and composer Ryan C Seaton. For more info: irishartscenter.org

This site-specific work, re-designed and re-staged for Irish Arts Center after its acclaimed 2022 Dublin premiere, takes the audience on a physical journey through the performance space, encountering an intergenerational cast of renowned dancers. It illuminates the personal and cultural histories contained within the Irish dancing body, inviting you to engage with traditional and contemporary expressions of the form side-by-side and up close, and to experience what the body holds and what happens when we collectively let go. Funded by the Arts Council of Ireland. Jean Butler researched, developed, and honed What We Hold with financial, administrative, and residency support from the Dance in Process Residency at Gibney, New York. Further financial and resource support gratefully received from Irish Arts Center, Dance Cork Firkin Crane, and Aer Lingus. Four women artists from Ireland and the diaspora explore notions of home, place and displacement, and identity through different media and styles within the practices of abstract art. Representing both the hard-edged and the lyrical, and ranging from oil painting to sculpture, their work shines a light on the genre’s reclamation of physical and cultural spaces that historically have been occupied by more traditional forms within the canon. IRISH ARTS CENTER

That little theatre carries so many memories for so many of us—and we can’t wait to have it back. But it’s not just nostalgia. We need a second, smaller-scaled venue to serve more artists as they are starting their careers, just as we have been going back to our earliest days. For more concert engagements and literature events, greater capacity for our education programs, and community events.

51st Street has always been a critical part of our vision of a new Irish Arts Center and we have to finish the job.

Our Commitment to Antiracism and Equity Irish Arts Center stands with our BIPOC family, friends, and colleagues against racism, discrimination, and violence. We continue to work toward providing an environment in which the work of artists can help forge the common ground that brings us together, and where people of all backgrounds are welcome and equal. We seek to approach that mission with humility, and to listen and learn from those whose lived experience is different from our own.

About Irish Arts Center Irish Arts Center, founded in 1972 and based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, is a home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds who share a passion or appreciation for the evolving arts and culture of contemporary Ireland and Irish America. We present, develop, and celebrate work from established and emerging artists and cultural practitioners, providing audiences with emotionally and intellectually engaging experiences in an environment of Irish hospitality. Steeped in grassroots traditions, we also provide community education programs and access to the arts for people of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2021, through a historic partnership of the people of Ireland and New York, Irish Arts Center completed construction on a fully-funded $60MM state-of-the-art new facility to support this mission for the 21st century.
