McCarthy’s Make A Change

The end of October saw the retirement of Donal and Mary McCarthy of McCarthy’s Londis, Rathmore. The store has been in the McCarthy family for nearly 70 years. Donal and Mary have been huge supporters of the community ranging from football to panto, and they will be missed. Best of luck to them in their retirement! Further luck to new owner Seamus Kelly!

Duhallow History As We’ve Never Seen It

Four Courts Press have just released a fascinating new book; Early Modern Duhallow, C.1534-1641: The Crisis, Decline And Fall Of Irish Lordship. It charts the transformation of early modern Duhallow by examining the crisis of Irish Lordship in the region under the Tudors and the decline and fall of the Lordships during the early Stuart period. In doing so, it examines a microcosm of how Irish Lordship was often destroyed not by direct conquest and colonization, but by a gradual process of economic, social and political erosion. The book is on sale in all good bookshops.
