Castlemagner Celebrates Its Historical Heritage

6 DiscoverDuhallow@irdduhallow.com Issue 71 August 26, 2022 Community News

Castle was under the control of the Magner family who would have their lands confiscated and restored over 400 years. The castle first began as a Norman motte and baily in 1183 with a Norman tower being added to the site in 1200 followed by a second tower in 1375. The site underwent refurbishment and was transformed into a full castle in 1467. The site now in ruins and on private land, but can be seen from the cemetery road in Castlemagner.StBrigid’sHoly well showcases the fusion of our ancient Celtic pagan traditions and Christianity. The well served as an important place of worship for locals especially during Penal times when Catholics were not allowed to openly practice their religion. Its current form is partly due to Owen Egan who reportedly attributed the recovery of his sight to the waters from St Brigid’s Well in 1787.

CCDA would like to thank the local community for their support in preparing for this event including our many Tidy Town’s volunteers who ensured the village of Castlemagner looked immaculate. We would also like to thank everyone involved in the restoration of the village pump, who through their hard work have left us with an attractive village feature we can be truly proud of. We would also like to thank our local County Councillors who attended and have been such a great support to our work. We would like to thank Cork County Council and the Heritage Council who provided funding for the visitor information board under the County Heritage Plan funding for 2022.

The Parish of Castlemagner gathered outside St Brigid’s Cemetery on Saturday 20th August to unveil a new visitor information board that showcases the long, colourful and turbulent history of this North Cork community going back through the centuries. The project was initiated by Castlemagner Community Development Association (CCDA), following on from their success in creating a visitor board on Lohort Castle in 2021. The new visitor information board tells the story of 3 historical sites that reflect Castlemagner’s rich history- St Brigid’s Cemetery, Magner’s Tower, and St Brigid’s Holy Well. The CCDA also highlighted the full restoration of an old village pump.StBrigid’s cemetery has been used as a sacred burial ground going back to 800AD. During its long history it has evolved and changed with its current form taking shape during the 19th Century. The Protestant Church built St Brigid’s Church on the site of an old medieval church in 1810, and it was in use until its closure in the 1960’s. In its history, the cemetery has seen many visitors, some of them infamous. Oliver Cromwell visited the cemetery during his time in Ireland in the 17th century and by all accounts, was less than courteous when referring to the family members of Richard Magner who were buried on the Magner’ssite.

Owen built a well house and left an inscription over the well opening - ‘Owen Egan of Knocknanus erected this in honour of God and the Blessed Virigin Mary AD1787’.

The unveiling event ended with a blessing of the cemetery led by representatives of the Protestant and Catholic Churches, Reverend Williams and Father Scanlon. The cemetery has served as a shared burial ground between Catholics and Protestants. Due to manufacturing delays a temporary sign was put up on Saturday to mark Heritage week, however, the permanent visitor information board will be fully installed at St Brigid’s cemetery in the coming days.

With the aid of LEADER funding, the community of Knocknagree was able to build a Community Playground on an existing, derelict site in the centre of the village. Prior to the establishment of this community facility, Knocknagree did not have a playground and there was a lack of recreational facilities for children and parents to meet and socialise, resulting in parents having to travel to playgrounds in other villages.

Through the SICAP programme, IRD Duhallow offers a suite of targeted supports to those who are distanced from the labour market to start their own business. We operate a dedicated mentoring programme, where entrepreneurs can receive up to ten hours one to one time with an experienced mentor to support them and provide independent advice and counsel to develop their business. This year we have delivered two SICAP supported Start Your Own Business Training programmes as well a one-day Business Bootcamp. These programmes focus on the essentials of starting your own business from understanding company structure, basic finance, sales, marketing and business planning. The

Spotlight on Knocknagree Playground

Knocknagree Playground has a highly visible and accessible location in the heart of the village fostering the spirit of a liveable, healthy environment for families to socialise in and for children to be physically active. Approximately eighty families with children in the local and wider community plus visiting grandchildren, relatives, and friends from the wider region, as well as neighbouring communities are directly benefiting from this playground. This important recreational outdoor area encourages and promotes cognitive and physical health as well as social development for rural youth. Footfall in the village will also increase as a result of the playground. This project fosters community spirit and enhances the attractiveness of the village with the view of attracting young couples and families as well as passing tourists into the area. As you progress in your recruitment journey from job search to application and interview stage, references are often requested by employers prior to the job offer. But what exactly is meant by reference and who should you ask to provide a reference for you? Generally speaking, references are given by people you have worked with in the past- ideally a former manager, team leader, or supervisor in one of your most recent positions. A person giving you a reference is called referee and is essentially someone who can speak to your previous qualities in the working environment including your skills, achievements and Referencesattitude.by employers can be requested via email or brief phone conversation.

References available on request

Perhaps you are beginning your career journey and you do not have professional work referees as you are applying for your first job. In this case, you could consider asking your teacher or school principal or coach on sporting teams or social club you are or were involved in.

SICAP 2018-2022 is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development with co-funding from the European Social Fund (ESF) as part of the ESF Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

What Are References?

It is advisable not to include the contact details of referees on your resume of cover letter. Rather include the line ‘references available on request’ and provide details once specially asked for them.

"If I can assist you in any way, contact me"

Give your referees the heads up Once you know that references will be required, it is a good idea to ask your referees for permission to share their details with an employer and give them the heads up that they might be contacted. This is your chance to also tell them about the type of job you have applied for allowing them to think about their responses. No referees? No problem!

Founded in 1941, they’re a staple in Duhallow’s musical landscape. They have played a major role in the local community throughout the years and they have maintained an incredible standard of lessons and performance. Band members are distinguished in both band and solo performances, and they continue to teach young musicians.Theband was born in the home of Paddy Fitzgerald. In the early days, many hours were spent in Dineen’s hall, learning and practicing. Thanks to Crowley’s in Cork, most of the equipment became available. Aside from the drums, one of which was gained, according to their own website, in “controversial circumstances”.

In 1997, the band travelled to the Interceltique Festival in Lorient, France, and in 2002, returned to France to perform in the Menton Christmas Festival. In 2001, during their 60th anniversary, they played in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York.

Uniforms came a few years later - most were from cork city, a few from Newmarket, and a some were made by Paddy Fitzgerald himself. The uniforms made their debut in 1943 and were blessed by Fr. Griffin. In their vast history, demand for performance has come for every sort of event, but one of the most notable was in 1951, when Eamonn DeValera was running an election campaign in Kerry. The band led the parade into Killarney, Killorglin, and by that same night, Caherciveen. In the beginning, travel for events was done in the back of Michael D. Murphy’s lorry, though eventually a bus became available.Between the mid 60s and early 70’s, the band were inactive. But this rare silence couldn’t last forever. Teddy Goulding and the late Johnny Fleming contacted former members, a meeting was held, and on St. Stephen’s day, 1971, the first steps towards reestablishment were made.

Grade 2 is the 2nd highest grade in the pipe band competing world. During the band’s time in Grade 3 and 2, many players from the Munster region and beyond came in to play with the band and made a huge contribution to the standard. Since 2014, they have been concentrating on young members competing in grade 5. Over the years, the band has competed and won a whole host of awards in competitions around the country and annually competes at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow.

Celebrating 40 years of competition

It wasn’t until 1971 that the dishevelled but delighted band struck up their first tune in nearly a decade - during St. Laitiaran’s day, a mid cork by election, and with former taoiseach Jack Lynch in Cullen, they returned with new uniforms, new drums, new pipes, and from there, they’ve only grown.Classes have kept up, competitions have been enjoyed, and they’ve become local heroes.

St. Augustine’s Feast Day

“Thou has made us for thyself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until it finds rest in thee”

The great story of Saint Augustine gives hope to all of us, and it is amazing what can be achieved by prayer, as was the case of Saint TheAugustine.famous son of St. Monica was born in Africa and spent many years living a life of immoral values and false beliefs. He lived a life centred on parties, entertainment, and worldly ambitions. His mother, Saint Monica, was praying for 17 years for his conversion. God never gives up on us. He is constantly waiting for an opportunity to reveal Himself to us, even up until the last moments of our Saintlives.Monica’s prayers were answered. Her son underwent a conversion and completely changed his life for the better. He realized that he had been living a life of misery and his soul “was tethered by the love of things that cannot last”. His complete turn around and conversion has been an inspiration to many who struggle with their faith and finding the right path God has chosen for them. He tells us that God’s mercy is infinite. Why does not this hour put an end to my sins?” Just then he heard a voice which said; “Take up and Thinkingread”. that God intended him to hear those words, he picked up the book of the letters of St. Paul and read the first passage his gaze fell on. Get Shorty shows that there’s nothing more attractive than just being honest, direct and being yourself. Chili proves this and then some. We can learn a lot from the way Chili carries himself. He says at one point in the movie “Don’t worry, I not gonna say any more than I have to, if that.” I really wish everyone in the world would follow his lead. He had just done the Addams Family movies beforehand with his next movie after this being Men in Black. He knows how to shoot comedies, unlike a lot of people today. He understands that comedy plays great in wide shots and that a lot of comedy should be played straight. Sonenfeld would attempt a similar comedy along these lines years later with Big Trouble - not a bad movie but it ain’t Get Shorty. It’s effortlessly funny and cool because it’s not trying to be. Its disappointing sequel Be Cool fails because it proves the opposite. Get Shorty would also be adapted into a T.V. show in 2017 with Ireland’s own Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano starring. It’s a different story to the movie and has its moments but the movie still reigns supreme.

Hollywood Swinging

Confidence is key for John Travolta’s Chili Palmer, in Barry Sonnenfeld’s cracking Hollywood crime comedy, Get Shorty (1995). John Travolta’s acting career was in a real slump when he landed his role in Pulp Fiction in 1994. A surprise hit that became a cultural phenomenon, it brought back Travolta into the mainstream. I feel (and I’m not the only one) that while Pulp Fiction rejuvenated his career as an actor, Get Shorty cemented his status as a great star.Based on a novel by the great Elmore Leonard, it follows Travolta as mob loan shark Chili Palmer who, while following a money debt out to Hollywood, decides to enter the movie business. Travolta is superb in his role, underplaying it perfectly. The rest of the cast are fantastic as well - Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, Denis Farina, Delroy Lindo, James Gandolfini. and Danny Devito. Chili Palmer is such a great character. He is essentially a good bad guy amongst bad bad guys. The great irony in the movie is how he leaves one cutthroat and ruthless world - the Mafia - and enters an even worse one - Hollywood. Get Shorty is not only a great crime comedy but a great satire on the phony baloney aspect of Hollywood with its false appearances and false promises. Chili Palmer’s whole dictum is confidence and lack of BS. He does and says what he means. You see this throughout the movie with people being drawn to him and even becoming more confident themselves. Writer Scott Frank did a great job of adapting Leonards words and director Barry Sonenfeld did a flawless job in directing that script.

Every business we engaged with over the last 2 years increased their online presence in some way during covid. Many started to focus on improving their social media marketing, some set up websites or added e-commerce elements to existing platforms, while others took the leap into digital marketing for the first time. Whatever digital strategies those businesses undertook, I’ve yet to come across one who hasn’t reaped the benefits – and continue to do Whileso.we might be eager to move on from it, we can’t underestimate the impact of covid. Not just on life, of course, but also on business and marketing.

As we make our way towards the final stretch of 2022, we’re still slowly emerging from the Covid cloud and into our ‘new norm’. For most of us, this thankfully means ‘back to business’, although for many, it’s business in a new way –a more hybrid model of online and offline.

There have been some huge shifts in the approach to sales, communications and connectivity over the last few years, the impact of which will surely be carried forward for both business and customer into the future. As they say about the past, ‘it’s never where you think you left it…’. According to the Central Statistics Office (2021) 99% of the Irish population now use the Internet in some way, with 79% of us active social media users. Facebook remains the most popular social media platform in Ireland, with Instagram coming in a close second. Twitter, TikTok and LinkedIn are also popular and can be very beneficial platforms for business.Andwhile we may all agree social media is now an important marketing tool for businesses, the key to growing and managing an online presence is knowing which platforms will give you the best return for your time and energy. In marketing, we call this ‘The Who, the What and the Where’! Who is your audience, what type of content do they want, and where online are they hanging out. These are the first and most important steps in putting together any digital marketing plan. The next is knowing your keywords (search terms your customers may use to find you) and creating a good online presence around these. We call this search engine optimisation KAREN TWOMEY

The Marsh Fritillary is univoltine, meaning it produces only one brood of eggs per season and in Ireland, can be found on the wing between mid-May and mid-July.

Caterpillars hatch some four to five weeks after eggs are laid, and go through six growth periods known as instars which is followed by pupation when they form a chrysalis. Caterpillars spend their first three instars feeding on the larval food plant in groups. By Autumn they have reached their fourth instar, at which point they turn black and begin to build a dense web at the base of the Devil’s-bit scabious plant for overwintering before feeding can resume in Spring. The fifth instar occurs in early spring and is spent basking in groups and feeding on Devil’s-bit scabious. During the sixth instar they disperse from the larval plant before pupation begins.

The Marsh Fritillary is one of six threatened Irish butterflies, classed as vulnerable to extinction under the Irish Butterfly Red List. It is listed under Annex I of the EU Habitats Directive, making it the only protected butterfly species in the Republic of Ireland. They have a wide distribution across the country; however their numbers are declining due to habitat degradation resulting in a loss of suitable feeding and breeding grounds containing Devil’s-bit Scabious which they rely on to survive. Suitable habitat for Marsh Fritillary include semi-natural grasslands, especially calcareous grassland, degraded bogs, wet heath, and fens up to 300m. Monitoring of habitats that are and once were suitable for Marsh Fritillary is vital to track changes in their population and further understand threats they face.

In particular the monitoring of their known breeding sites is of great importance, and citizen science plays a big role in this. Such monitoring is organised by the National Biodiversity Data Centre in collaboration with the NPWS. Once a year volunteers are gathered to survey suitable breeding sites between August and mid-September in which a predetermined route is walked in order to find and record the presence of Marsh Fritillary Larval webs, as well as carry out a habitat assessment in which the abundance of Devil’s-bit Scabious is Forrecorded.moreinformation on the Marsh Fritillary Monitoring Scheme, visit the National Biodiversity Centre website at marsh-fritillary-monitoring-scheme/biodiversityireland.ie/surveys/https:// Devil’s-bit Scabious

The Marsh Fritillary (Euphydryas aurinia) is one of four Fritillary butterflies found in Ireland. It is the smallest of these four with a wingspan ranging from 35 to 50 mm. The upper-side of the butterfly is chequered with orange, brown and cream patches, and the paler underside is chequered with just orange and cream. A distinguishing characteristic of the Marsh fritillary is a band of orange patches with a black dot centering each patch at the base of their underwing on either side.

The Marsh Fritillary

The caterpillars are monophagous, meaning they feed solely on a single species of Larval food plant, and in the case of Marsh Fritillary, this plant is Devil’s-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis). As such, eggs are laid on the underside of Devil’s-bit scabious leaves, with their large brood allowing them to lay up to three batches of around 300 eggs across a habitat.
