It’s All A Balancing Act

As the saying goes- all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy- poor Jack. But all play and no work wouldn’t be very good for Jack either. The lesson being that we need balance to have a fulfilled and healthy routine. It is very easy to fall into patterns that upset our balance, leading to stress, work, anxiety or low moods. We can see the importance of getting the balance correct at least some of the time- we can’t get it right all of the time. But how do we do that? Well here’s a few tips on what to focus on, the 5 P’s of balanced mental health:

Purpose - Find activities that bring a sense of purpose to the routine. That can be our job if we

are lucky enough to enjoy it, but purpose can be got from feeling like we’ve achieved something in the day- housework, gardening, cooking- whatever it is that makes us feel like we’ve done something meaningful in our day.

Pleasure- Make sure to include activities that are enjoyable in the day. If we focus on enjoying the small stuff we will notice it more- the first cup of coffee in the day in our comfy chair, enjoying the nature around on our walk or playing with the grandchildren are all enjoyable events if we slow down and notice them.

People- Finding meaningful connection with people we enjoy being with does wonders for your mood.

Pace- are we on autopilot? Rushing around with a sense of urgency that we have created in

our own minds. Take a breath and slow the pace.

Peace- peace of mind. Notice the thinking patterns, if worry is a big part of our thinking then find ways of managing that worry. Often when we worry excessively it can be a habit that’s hard to break. So, notice our worry thoughts and let them go. Worrying will never solve our problems.

As for Jack, maybe he could heed Oscar Wilde’s words when he said- “Moderation in all thingsincluding moderation”

The Power of Omega-3: Fuel for a Stronger Immune System

Our immune system is like a quiet guardian—always on duty, scanning for threats, and stepping in when bacteria, viruses, or other invaders try to take hold. To keep it sharp, what we put on our plates matters. One nutrient that stands out for immune resilience is omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are essential fats the body cannot make on its own, which means we must source them from food or supplements. There are three main types: EPA and DHA (found in oily fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel) and ALA (from plants such as flax,

chia, and walnuts). Together, they provide wide-ranging benefits— from calming chronic inflammation to supporting brain and heart health—but their role in immunity is especially compelling. Research shows that omega-3s help regulate immune responses by dampening unnecessary inflammation, improving the activity of phagocytes (the body’s frontline defenders), and supporting the balance of T-cells and B-cells, which fine-tune our defenses. They also nurture a healthier gut microbiome—a cornerstone of long-term immunity.

So how do you get enough? Aim for two to three servings of oily fish a week, or reach for high-

quality omega-3 supplements. Not all oils are created equal, so look for brands that emphasize purity and sustainability. One standout is Wild Atlantic, an Irish brand renowned for its premium marinesourced omega oils. Their focus on quality and freshness ensures the beneficial compounds remain potent, giving your immune system the best support nature can offer. Whether sprinkled through your diet or taken daily in supplement form, omega-3s are a small habit with a big payoff. By making them part of your routine, you’re not just feeding your body— you’re strengthening your natural defenses for the seasons ahead.

Asian Hornet Confirmed in Cork Amid Fruitful Summer

The lovely weather has meant a fabulous year for fruit and flowers. Apple tree branches are bending and the hedgerows are dripping with delicious Blackberries. Our wild pollinator population, as well as our honeybees, are feasting on pollen and nectar from the abundance of flowers. It is with this in mind I must draw your attention to a Biosecurity Alert for the Asian Hornet, a sighting of which was confirmed in Cork last week. The Asian Hornet, Vespa velutina, is a predatory insect from South East Asia that poses a serious risk to our native biodiversity, particularly our honeybee population. A new government-led Asian Hornet Management Group chaired by the National Parks and Wildlife Service with the Department of Agriculture, National Biodiversity Data Centre, and the National Museum of Ireland, has been formed to coordinate the response.

If you spot what you think may be an Asian Hornet please take a photo and upload your sighting to the National Biodiversity Data Centre at https://records.biodiversityireland.ie

Himalayan Balsam

Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant found in Ireland, it is widespread and is commonly found along riverbanks and in damp areas, Himalayan Balsam has an annual life cycle, which means that it germinates, grows, flowers, seeds and dies in the one year, It can be identified by its pale pink/purple flowers, hollow stems that are reddish in colour, the plant can grow from 2-3 metres in height in just one year, when the plant is mature the seed pods explode spreading the seeds from the parent plant, seeds can then spread through wind and water.

Impacts: Himalayan Balsam has several impacts here in Ireland, which includes the elimination of native species through shading and reduced pollination,

a reduction in the stability of riverbanks after dieback of the plant leading to bank erosion, the plant also leads to an increased risk in flooding due to impeding waterflow in waterbodies.

Control: Unlike other invasive species found here in Ireland, Himalayan Balsam is relatively easy to control through mechanical methods. Pulling is an effective method in the control of the plant, this is due to the shallow rooting system of the plant which allows for the plant to be removed easily at the root, waste

material should then be disposed of carefully. Cutting can also be an effective method in the control of Himalayan Balsam, the plant should be cut below the node to stop regeneration using a flail or strimmer, cutting should be repeated annually.

‘Roger’s Final Farewell’ Aims To Have The Crowds Laughing In The Everyman, Cork

The Glen Theatre Banteer Drama Group are taking the late writer Seán Buckley’s solo work, Roger’s Final Farewell to The Everyman Theatre this September 7th 2025.

Directed by Tadhg O’Keeffe, the comedy follows the Johnson household with matriarch Aggie and her two daughters; Hazel and Purdly. They are mourning the recent death of household patriarch Roger. However, his drinking and gambling debts are revealed, throwing the home into disarray. A collection of strange characters in and out of the house, including a confused Irish War of Independence veteran Grandfather with a ‘strong patriotic devotion to Ireland’, only adds to the hilarious chaos. So far, the play has been a resounding success with audiences flocking to the Glen for a night of laughter.

Sean Buckley

Seán Buckley was a native of Ballydesmond. According to The Glen Theatre’s Tadhg O’Keeffe, he was a talented man in many avenues. He was gifted in the arena of building, having worked in the architectural, plumbing, and electrical side of the industry. He even looked after animals

in Coolwood Park in Killarney. However, Seán had another talent that not many people knew about, and that was his gift of writing. Seán passed to his eternal reward in 2023. When announcing his death on rip.ie, his family posted with it the following sentiment:

“To us you were someone special, someone set apart, your memory will live forever, engraved within our hearts.”

Roger’s Final Farewell is Seán’s only work but he can include that in his legacy. It can be considered

his masterpiece. The Glen Theatre Drama Group would love to thank Seán and his wonderful family, for the privilege of bringing his hilarious words to life for the first time. Thank you for the laughter, Seán! Here’s to Roger’s Final Farewell causing a lot of it!

The Feast of the Queenship of Mary

The Feast of the Queenship of Mary is celebrated on August 22nd, eight days after the Feast of the Assumption. It commemorates Mary’s role as Queen of Heaven and Earth, a title that stems from her divine motherhood and her Assumption into Heaven. This feast emphasizes Mary’s unique position as the Mother of God and her powerful intercession for humanity.

When we pray the litany of the rosary we celebrate her Queenship.

She is Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles and Confessors. She is Queen of Virgins, Queen of all Saints and Queen conceived without original sin. She is Queen assumed into Heaven, Queen of the most Holy Rosary, Queen of Families and Queen of Peace. These are titles for Mary, which signify her Queenship.

The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, celebrating Mary’s elevation to a position of royal authority in Heaven, is celebrated when we pray the fifth decade of the Glorious mystery of the Holy Rosary.

Mary’s Queenship is probably best seen as a consequence of her Assumption. This link is recognized in article 59 of Vatican 11 Constitution of the Church Lumen Gentium. “The Immaculate Virgin... was taken up body and soul into Heavenly glory when her earthly life was over, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of Lords and conqueror of sin and death.”

The Story of the Queenship of Mary.

Pope Pius X11 established the feast day in 1954. But the Blessed Virgin Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, God spoke, through the Angel Gabriel, and said that Mary’s son, Jesus, would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “Mother of My Lord.”As in all the events of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus; her queenship is a share in the kingship of Jesus. In his 1954 encyclical to the Queen of Heaven, Pius X11 points out that Mary deserves the title because she is the new Eve and is so closely associated with the redemptive work of Jesus, because of her unique perfection, and because of her powers of intercession.

We have many artistic depictions of Mary seated next to Christ, often on a throne, with angels and saints surrounding them. The Trinity may also be present, signifying Mary’s unique relationship with God. The crown symbolizes Mary’s Queenship, and the Coronation signifies her role as a powerful intercessor and advocate for humanity.

In the Book of Revelation Chapter 12; 1-6, we get a great insight into the honour Christ has given His mother. A sign appears in the Heavens! A woman is crowned with twelve stars and adorned with the sun, with the moon at her feet, about to give birth to a male child, a son “who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron.”

By understanding the honour Christ gives His mother we better understand the honour we should give her. From her all graces flow. She is the one who brings us to know and to love her son Jesus and who wants to bring us all to

Heaven. She is the one who is fighting our spiritual battles for us. She is our protector from the Evil One and wants our help in the battle against evil. She promises us, “In the end My Immaculate Heart will Triumph.” She asks for our help and the greatest way we can help her is to pray the rosary every day for her intentions.

Prayer of The Hail, Holy QueenSalve Regina.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn, then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. O God whose only begotten Son, by His life death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation; grant we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us.
