PJ Tierney: a real life Karate Kid There can’t be too many people who can claim to have toured the world with Madonna, U2 and Elton John. Nor being off to the side when filming of The Matrix is happening before your eyes. Not a bad day job.

For Paula (PJ) Tierney, it was all part of career that has now taken a turn to literature, as the forty-something author releases the first in a five-part series of books for young readers in the shape of ‘Jamie Reign’.

PJ says herself her life was ‘uneventful’ until she got to university and studied Creative Arts.

With a degree under her arm, she set off on an incredible career with some of the world’s biggest artists.

She has sat in a truss beside Madonna descending on a mirror ball, and has worked with the likes of U2, Elton John and BB King to name a few.

“It all happened very quickly,” PJ said from her Sydney office. “I was a little bit lucky being a girl in a predominantly male industry. If you are half decent, and I was good at my job… its can be possible to get recognised.

“Conversely, if you do make a mistake, you can’t slip into the background either. Getting from university to being on stage with Madonna, it’s a matter of just introducing

“It was still in the back of my mind that I wanted to write books. Even from school I wanted to write. I had a pretty sheltered life… leading a middle class existence, nice school and not too much stress then straight into uni, there wasn’t much from my life I could draw from.

“I think the excitement of being involved in these concerts was what enticed me to it. The excitement of just being there is enough, and who doesn’t want to hang out backstage with rock stars at age 22?

“But I can’t tell you how exhausting it was.

It’s a busy life. Trucks arrive at 8am at an empty venue and the show begins at 8 pm no matter what. You have all those people working to a tight deadline and its like doing three days work in one day. The audiences are unforgiving. The show has to go on.”

It was working on the handover of Hong Kong to China where the author’s creation

started to form, as PJ soaked up life in the busy city.

“I spent a lot of time working on barges in Hong Kong for the handover, and we spent weeks on boats, and tugs just getting everything ready for this huge show that the world was going to witness. There was about 80 craft we were managing and I found the place fascinating.

“I think that’s where the bulk of the Jamie Reign story came from. I loved the language, and the customs. For example there was a large barge which was dressed up like a dragon. According to local custom we had to get a monk to paint the eyes on the dragon.

There we are bowing three times while this monk paints the dragon’s eye…things like that are so foreign to most of us in Australia, I find it fascinating.

“That’s the important thing, I had to write this book as an outsider. My husband’s life is represented in the first few chapters of this book, if you do read it, it’s a homage to him.

A WORD FROM THE

EDITOR His story is so amazing that I couldn’t help but write it. Growing up on the harbours of Hong Kong, it’s a fascinating and also heartbreaking story.

“For a while I wasn’t sure if it was a biography I was writing, but then in came Kung Fu (and I always wanted to be the Karate Kid), plus add in some Eastern mysticism, it all came together. I’m very proud of it.

“I wrote about Jamie as a story I’d like to read as a ten year old. In the editing all the language is refined for the younger reader.

“I think its formed part of the mythology of childhood these days that they live in the worlds of ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Percy Jackson’. I love the ‘Rangers Apprentice’ books too, I take inspiration from those books that kids want to read stuff like this, and its nice to know that I’m having a part in their childhood.”

The first book, ‘The Last Spirit Warrior’ has just been released, and already a sequel will be out in time for Christmas. It’s a story that PJ always planned to spread over several books.

“It was always intended to be a series, there are five all up, and part two will be out in December. It’s what I always proposed to the publishers, maybe its unique to this (younger reader) market, because the characters have so much growth to do. I know I enjoy watching characters grow over a series, maybe that’s the reason why people love stories spread over time.”

It was really exciting to see all the goings on in the CBD recently as the ABC filmed their telemovie ‘Parer’s War’ over several days and nights. So many people in Ipswich have been captivated by seeing people in their 1940’s costume and the cars spotted around town from that era are just amazing. Plus with the Ipswich 360 just around the corner, its a different kind of car on the racetrack we see today than those from the forties!

Ipswich loves the V8’s. We all know that this is a car loving town, and the V8’s draw people from all over the area ready to soak up the atmosphere along with the exhaust fumes.

$10 million facelift for Springfield greenspace corridor Robelle Domain Parkland is fast becoming the community recreational hub of Springfield, a green space link between Orion Shopping Centre, residential areas and Springfield Central — and it is set to expand further funding for an additional 10 hectares of walking tracks, grassed areas and gardens.

Already host to education, technology, health and business precincts within this master planned community, Springfield’s current population of 23,000 is expected to grow eventually to 85,000. Construction on Phase Two will commence by year’s end, and on completion the Parkland will include a new entry plaza, water plaza, waterfall, lake, picnic areas, pathways, floral terraces and a lookout.

“Stage one of Robelle Domain has been enthusiastically embraced by residents where you can always find families out enjoying the recreational and play areas,” said Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale.

“With Ipswich’s population now at 180,000, we are ensuring that we have the leisure facilities people value. It is the final chapter of what we are endeavouring to achieve in Springfield. Jobs and education are all important, but we are also creating a great lifestyle in a family friendly city of Ipswich, and this is part of it.

“We need to continually show the people of Queensland that we are a world class city. My attitude is ‘no more second-class for Ipswich’; anything we do will continue to be world class.”

The project is jointly funded by Ipswich City Council and the Australian Government.

Local Councillor David Morrison said Stage 2 would deliver a welcome expansion of the 2 IPSWICHLIFE

domain with more space and beautiful floral landscaping. Also proposed is a second zero depth water play area, which are so popular with local families and kids.

“We now have the distinction of having Queensland’s oldest part in Queens Park, which is 150 years old this month, and its newest park in Robelle.”

Robelle is part of the Springfield Central Parklands which is 487 hectares of open space that extends 13 km along Woogaroo and Opossum Creeks, making it one of the most extensive urban parkland corridors in Australia.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann said the Government had invested $15 million into Robelle Domain, as it creates social and economic benefits.

“Stage 2 of this project will employ around 84 people, attract up to 500,000 visitations, with a total economic impact of approximately $7.7 million on the South East Queensland economy,” he said.

“It’s focussed on jobs and growth in the Western Corridor.

Co-accomplice at the Federal Government level, Bernie Ripoll MP, said that the government’s attitude is about building community infrastructure and facilities, and that Robelle was just one example of this enterprise.

“Springfield is about building a community,

a great community, building something that has a heart and a soul, and that’s right here in the heart of Springfield...come and see it, and enjoy it,” he said.

Commitment to expansion has also been welcomed by the University of Southern Queensland in the adjacent Education City.

USQ has a rapidly growing campus with over 1700 students and 100 staff, who are potentially major users of the parkland.

There are also nine public and private schools across Greater Springfield’s six local suburbs.

“This development also sends an impressive marketing message to potential international students about what South East Queensland has to offer,” said Campus Executive Manager, Doug Fraser, who has been at the campus from the outset when it was surrounded by bushland.

Greater Springfield’s visionary founder Maha Sinnathamby said this announcement heralded the making of an intergenerational tourist hub for the whole region and with it countless opportunities to deliver a vast range of social and economic benefits to many people.

“Greater Springfield has approval for more than 1.4 million square metres of retail, office, health, education and residential development equivalent to the size of North Sydney,” he said.

Winter is here. I am now regularly smelling burning wood fires, watching the leaves of liquid ambers turn to auburn and begin to fall, and here at home it’s knitted jumpers and warm socks to the hilt until I’m sure we’ve put on another 10kg alone in layering. It’s also this time of year that I particularly yearn for the comfort of warm puddings.

Before we left South Australia a couple of weeks ago, we were loaded with jars of homemade Apricot Jam which began me on cravings for some home-baked Bread Pudding drizzled with cream.

My Bread Pudding is one of those kind of desserts that each mouthful reminds me of being tucked up in bed, snug as a bug and reading the best of books.

Serves 4 6-8 Slices of Sultana Bread 3 Eggs 3Tblsp Caster Sugar 300ml Cream Apricot Jam Cinnamon Desiccated Coconut *Preheat your oven to 180c or 160c for fan forced. *Remove your crusts and spread your slices of bread with apricot jam and sprinkle over the top with cinnamon. *Cut your slices of bread into triangles and arrange in a greased oven-proof dish. *Whisk together your eggs, sugar and cream. Pour the mixture over the bread and sprinkle over the desiccated coconut. *Bake in the oven for 25 minutes and once removed, leave to cool slightly and serve with pouring cream.

Exhibition extended to meet demand The Ipswich Art Gallery will extend its new Children’s Exhibition ‘Light Play’ due to its popularity with children.

Councillor Charlie Pisasale said ‘Light Play’, which opened on July 15, will be extended one week to accommodate the high number of groups keen to experience the exhibition.

“What a fantastic achievement for the Gallery,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Light Play will give children the opportunity to explore the different properties of light using overhead projectors and light boxes to create a unique, interactive light-filled space.

It’s all about experimentation, discovery, learning and play.”

Cr Pisasale said interest from school and kindergarten groups in the Gallery’s education program was increasing.

“More than 6000 students visited the Gallery in the past year to take part in interactive art activities, with schools now coming from Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Light Play opened in the Children’s Gallery recently and will now finish on August 25.

The free exhibition is recommended for children aged three to 12 years but all ages are welcome.

Light Play will open to the public from 2.30pm until 5pm Monday to Friday following school and kindergarten workshops, and 10am to 5pm on weekends.

A new financial year brings good things for local workers and families.

Over the past few weeks families would have begun receiving the second installment of the SchoolKids bonus.

I know this is a welcome relief for thousands of local families faced with back-to-school costs.

Eligible families receive $205 for each child in primary school, and $410 for each child in high school.

There is good news for workers this financial year, with the increase of the Superannuation Guarantee to 9.25 per cent. This will rise gradually to 12 per cent on 1 July 2019.

This reform means a 30 year old on average full-time wages who retires at age 67 will retire with an extra $127,000 in superannuation savings.

The Federal Government has abolished the superannuation guarantee age limit, so workers aged over 70 will receive the same universal superannuation.

There are now even more ways to lodge a tax return. The Federal Government raised the tax-free threshold to $18,200, effectively freeing up a million people from having to lodge a tax return.

A new app, ATO Tax 2013, is available free from the Apple AppStore and Google Play.

People can lodge their returns electronically using e-tax, or for those who prefer paper forms you can still order them.

College for Achievement, Belonging, and Care Westside Christian College has had a proven, consistent record of providing quality education for its students, since it first opened its doors 36 years ago in the suburb of Goodna. Much has changed since the foundation of the College, but the Westside culture of achievement, belonging and care remains strong.

Preparations for the next phase of the College’s development are well underway with the building of a new senior primary section on the college’s second campus.

The Westside Christian College pathway of learning starts at Pre-Prep where getting ready for school begins. The early years (Prep- Year 3) are when the foundations for learning are laid. Senior Primary (Years 4-7) builds on those foundations. Junior High School (Years 8–10) consolidates the essential learning areas, while introducing some choice. The Senior Years (11–12) complete the school curriculum by preparing for future learning and work after graduation.

At Westside Christian College we have been very pleased with the academic achievements of our students over a number of years. Mayor releases a Budget for the future of Ipswich Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has handed down the budget for the current financial year, with the aim of preparing the city for the expected doubling of the population over the next decade with a high priority on building infrastructure. allocation of $8.5 million,” he said.

It’s Tax Time at ITP

With the end of financial year here, there are a few changes individuals should consider when preparing their income tax returns for the year ended 30 June 2013.

Firstly, the Personal Tax Rates have changed this year, with the tax free threshold increasing from $6,000 to $18,200, which means that taxpayers do not have to pay tax on the first $18,200 of their taxable income. However, the tax on taxable income between $37,001 - $80,000 has increased from 30c to 32.5c.

Small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $2 million may be entitled to the new small business concession rules which include the instant asset write-off threshold which has increased from $1,000 to $6,500. Small businesses can claim an accelerated initial deduction for motor vehicles acquired in 2012-13 and subsequent years. For vehicles purchased for a cost of more than

$6,500, small businesses may be entitled to claim an initial deduction of $5,000 plus 15% of the balance purchase price.

The end of the financial year is almost upon us again and in these tough economic conditions, it is time to start thinking about how to get the maximum refund from your tax return this year.

There have been a few important changes to the tax landscape this year.

Firstly the tax free threshold has increased to $18,200. When you add in the low income tax offset this means you won’t pay any tax if your income is below $20,542. You may still have to lodge a tax return (if your income is below that level) if you have had tax withheld from your wage or salary – it is the only way you will get your money back.

Another important change this year is that the ATO will be paying all individual refunds electronically. So you will need to advise your bank account details to your tax agent or in your own return if you prepare it yourself.

Queensland Raceway is paving the way for an exciting weekend of action-packed racing as we again play host to the V8 Supercars for the 2013 Coates Hire Ipswich 360.

The V8 Supercar Championships first raced into town more than a decade ago thanks to a partnership between Ipswich City Council, Events Queensland, Queensland Raceway and the V8 Supercars and it is one of the city’s biggest events of the year.

As well as welcoming thousands of spectators from across the south-east, it is a great opportunity for the Ipswich community to witness a slice of Queensland motorsport action and I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the drivers, teams and fans that have come to be part of the Ipswich 360.

This year is particularly exciting as the battle between team Holden and Ford has been expanded to also include Mercedes and Nissan but no matter whom you back, the Ipswich 360 is sure to be a great weekend for families, with plenty of entertainment on and off the track.

V8 Supercar Driver Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom will host a Cars 2 movie screening at the Ipswich Tivoli Drive-In this Thursday 18 July ahead of the Coates Hire Ipswich 360.

In the Cars 2 movie, the shiny red racer Lightning McQueen and his trusty sidekick Mater head off to compete in the World Grand Prix.

Along the way they meet some interesting characters – including an Australian race car called Frosty – voiced by real life V8 Supercars Driver Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom.

There is limited space available at the Tivoli, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Gates open from 4.00 pm, for a movie start time of 6.30 pm. Put the kids in the car and head on down, grab your snacks at the café and hear an interview with Mark Winterbottom before the movie.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK - 21-27 July Catholic education – Making a difference Catholic Education Week in Queensland is a special opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate their distinctive mission – and the official state-wide launch will take place in Ipswich at St Mary’s College.

Queensland Governor Penelope Wensley will launch the week, and present awards to Catholic educators at a ceremony at St Mary’s College on 24 July. Catholic Education Week takes place from 21 to 27 July 2013, featuring a wide range of activities across the state.

This year’s theme ‘Making a Difference’ inspired by Jesus – reflects a key element of the philosophy behind Catholic education.

“We strive to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the wider community,” said Pam Betts, Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education.

“We do this by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

“That’s reflected by a range of activities in our schools during Catholic Education Week, in which we remind our students that we all have a responsibility to be active and useful citizens,” she said.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK Enrol your child now for 2014 Queensland’s newest Catholic primary school, at Springfield Lakes, is now enrolling for 2014.

Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School opened at the beginning of this year, with 68 students. It will grow over the coming years, eventually catering for more than 600 students from Prep to Year 6.

The four hectare site has been masterplanned to provide high-quality, technologically-rich flexible learning facilities which provides a welcoming, safe and developmentally-appropriate environment for students. It is designed to serve the rapidlygrowing areas of Springfield Lakes, New Beith and Greenbank.

Principal, Judith Seery, said Good Shepherd’s academic focus was personalised learning for each individual, to help children develop as confident, enthusiastic and effective learners.

“It is our vision to provide opportunities for all our children to fulfil their potential through a commitment to high standards and excellence within an engaging, broad and rich curriculum,” Ms Seery said.

Youth festival set to continue in

Rosewood

Ipswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said this was the second year of the festival in Rosewood and Council planned to continue with the event each year.

“This is an example of the way Council is working from Grandchester to Camira to engage Ipswich’s young people,” she said.

“We are open to suggestions from local young people for any activities they would like to see held within Ipswich.”

Cr Ireland said council already operated the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council and the Ipswich Indigenous Youth Advisory Councils (IIYAC) which had 28 members ranging in age from 12 to 17-years-old.

She said the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council had been founded in 2007 to give Ipswich youth a special forum in which they could express a wide variety of views and ideas about issues affecting them.

In 2012 the Ipswich Indigenous Youth Advisory Council was established to increase and better engage our Indigenous young people.

Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said the Rosewood Youth Festival was specifically designed to reach out to young people in the Rosewood corridor.

“We hope this festival during the school holidays provided some fun for local young people in their own backyard.”

Cr Pahlke said the festival had given Ipswich’s young people the chance to enjoy live music and show off their dance, skate and music skills.

“It was a great day with participants enjoying the music, skating, activities, food and fun on offer. Young Life Australia partnered with council for the festival and we thank them for their contribution towards this event.”

Young Life Australia is a non-aligned Christian charity focussed on role modelling and mentoring young people of high school age, to build confidence, values and resilience.

Cr Pahlke said council was excited to be able to support local young people and services to develop and plan for the 2014 Rosewood Youth Festival.

“One of the exciting outcomes from this year’s festival was that several local young people came forward who wish to participate in planning the 2014 festival and make it bigger, better and more relevant for Ipswich’s young people.”

RAAF Health Services Wing – Humanitarians on call In times of crisis when medical treatment is vital and evacuation may be needed the RAAF Health Services Wing can expect the call to pack up and go wherever medical specialists can provide the humanitarian assistance that saves lives.

Through its headquarters at RAAF Base Amberley, HSW provides expeditionary health support, aeromedical evacuation and aerospace medicine support. When not deployed, HSW units provide health support at their home bases.

While providing health services at home base is important it is the aeromedical evacuation (AME) role that is HSW’s forte, delivering the right health capability at the right place and at the right time – hence the Wing’s motto of Compassion, Skill and Courage.

With aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and C-17A Globemaster III now certified for aeromedical evacuation, HSW medical staff can and do respond to emergency situations worldwide.

With the reorganisation of Combat Support Group, focused mainly on it expeditionary role, Health Services Wing takes on an enhanced responsibility for the aviation health component of the CSG mission. This includes training its medical and support staff and enabling effective deployments on humanitarian and other support missions

requiring expert medical assistance.

Three squadrons and one training unit make up the Wing: 3 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Nos 1 and 2 Expeditionary Health Squadrons, and Health Operational Conversion Unit. Although military in nature, HSW calls on Specialist Reserve doctors and medical professionals to augment its Base Medical Services, with some reservists deploying on exercises and operations.

Wartime squadron to ‘run’ RAAF Amberley A RAAF squadron that flew combat missions during World War II and later became a non-flying Air Force Reserve squadron will now be responsible for many of the base support functions that keep the Amberley air base up and running.

No 23 Squadron, commanded by Wing Commander Simon Nickson, has just taken over the Base Firefighting assets as the first part of a major Air Force wide reorganisation and transformation aimed at improving combat support provided to flying squadrons.

At the local level, more than 300 personnel along with base assets will be transferred to 23 Squadron’s in the coming months, as other sections such as mechanics, aircraft refuellers

and various support trades join the squadron. By 1 January 2014 this transition will be complete.

As an example, a number of the now 23 Squadron firefighters will soon deploy to the Shoalwater Bay Training Area near Rockhampton for the multinational exercise Talisman Saber.

They have been seconded to No 382 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron for the duration of the exercise.

WGCDR Nickson said that this dual role of 23 Squadron in maintaining base services at Amberley while providing people and assets to the expeditionary squadron for deployed operations is how the squadron will operate in future years.

“We see this as the most effective way to support Combat Support Group in its mission,” he said.

23 Squadron celebrated its 75th Anniversary last year, with remembrance ceremonies for squadron aircrews who flew during World War II, and is now looking forward to having increased influence on supporting air power in Australia and as part of deployed operations.

Air Force integrates its security assets

The evolution of Air Force security forces in past years, with increased emphasis on air base and air power asset security, has led to the recent integration of security musterings These new Air Force Security and Air Force Police musterings recognise the need for an updated approach to security operations at home and on deployed operations.

The changes also represent a significant change to Air Force security, establishing three new Security Force Squadrons based at RAAF Bases Amberley, Williamtown and Edinburgh. The ultimate aim is to achieve a highly enhanced capability across the whole spectrum of security.

In the first round of changes from July 4, airfield defence guards, military working dog handlers and security police will form the new squadrons, ultimately under a newly formed 95 Wing (from January 2014).

Australian Army engineers, alongside US Army engineers, worked through 2013 to remediate final ‘ISAF manned’ Forward Operating Base in Uruzgan province.

The engineers from the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Task Group have reduced the tactical infrastructure of FOB Hadrian.

This included the removal of two M777A2 Howitzers airlifted to Kandahar Airfield by US Army CH-47 Chinooks along with containers of stores and equipment.

FOB Hadrian, which is 60km west of Tarin Kot, was ‘deconstructed’ in line with the Afghan National Security Force (ANSF) enduring plan for the province.

The ANSF operates independently in the area and now has the lead for security across the province.

Initially a Dutch base until their withdrawal in 2010, Australian Mentoring Teams worked out of FOB Hadrian training and patrolling with the 1st Kandak of the 4th Brigade, until it achieved operational independence in November 2012.

The base has been handed over in clean and sustainable condition, with only the base’s perimeter walls left to be deconstructed by contracted support.

Coalition forces are confident that the Afghan National Police are capable of conducting independent operations.

Recent insurgent attacks on Afghan Police checkpoints in the Deh Rawud and Shahid-e Hassas districts have been repelled by Afghan soldiers who are now employing complex 26 IPSWICHLIFE

One of The Beatles, John Lennon, reckoned that life was what happened when we’re busy making other plans. But sometimes it’s living that puts major plans on the backburner.

Take retirement saving. Most people understand that they’ll need to replace around 70 per cent of their average earnings in retirement. An average couple needs in the order of $1 million to live comfortably for more than twenty years of not working.

Given the size of this goal, you’d expect a certain focus on retirement savings among working people. But in a survey we did at Yellow Brick Road during June, we found that saving for retirement ranked 12th in priorities out of 16 financial issues.

The most important issue for 25-49 year olds was general cost of living, followed (in order) by utility bills, mortgage repayments, credit cards and the cost of raising children.

Other issues greater than saving for retirement were medical bills, saving for a holiday, personal loans, rent/board, vehicle finance, insurance costs and paying for renovations.

So, retirement savings isn’t really ignored, it’s just that ‘life’ gets in the way.

If you’re employed, your employer must put aside 9.25 per cent of your wages into a superannuation fund. So you’re already saving. But it’s what you do with this superannuation that makes the difference.

Start by focusing. Tell yourself: “it’s my money.” Secondly, ensure your fund is not charging too much in fees. You shouldn’t pay more than 1 per cent per annum to have your savings managed (yet many do). The difference between 1 per cent and 2 per cent of a $100,000 nest egg is $1000. This is money you should keep in your own savings where it can compound.

Thirdly, avoid trading-off potential returns in order to have ‘risk free’ savings. The difference between a ‘conservative’ option in a super fund and a ‘growth’ option can be the difference between earning 4 per cent and 9 per cent. On a $100,000 nest egg, that’s a difference of $5000 each year. Young people especially should not be too conservative in their investment choices.

As with all important investments, there are no magic solutions with superannuation. The point I make is that your goals come closer to reality when you start to focus and to pay attention. Not everyone can throw more money into their super when life is getting in the way. But anyone can take an interest, compare funds and make good decisions.

Mazda has set a new record financial year result selling 104,040 new cars, SUVs and utilities in the year ending 30 June 2013.

Up 7.6 per cent compared to the previous financial year, Mazda also posted record sales in the six months to 30 June, 2013, with 52,287 new vehicles finding homes.

With a healthy 9.1 per cent share, Mazda remains second in the market Year-To-Date (YTD) and holds its place as the leading fullline importer.

Mazda recorded 9,567 new vehicles sales in June, with CX-5 and Mazda3 leading the way.

CX-5 set a new benchmark in June with 2,036 sales to record a best-ever SUV result and consolidate its position as the country’s number one SUV. On approach, integrated antennas in the vehicle body identify a radio pulse generated by the key fob. When the button on the door handle is pressed, the door will automatically unlock to allow access.

When the ignition button (located to the left of the instrument cluster) is pushed, the driver’s key is authenticated. The vehicle immobiliser and electronic steering column lock are automatically released so that the engine can start.

Toyota named ‘Best Global Green Brand’ More than 10,000 consumers surveyed around the world recognised Toyota for committing to sustainable environmental leadership and having invested in innovative vehicles such as the pioneering Toyota Prius. They also appreciated the company’s various programs designed to reduce greenhouse emissions, water and energy consumption throughout its operations. The 2013 Best Global Green Brands report, compiled by international brand consultancy Interbrand, determines the gap between a company’s environmental performances and its actual environmental practices. Sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles worldwide now stand at 5.22 million, resulting in an estimated reduction of some 35 million tonnes of CO2.

Globally, Toyota is currently in the process of a product launch cycle that will introduce new or updated hybrid models. Australian customers can choose from eight Toyota and Lexus hybrid models: the locally built Camry Hybrid and the fully imported Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Lexus CT 200h, GS 450h, RX 450h and LS 600h.

In 2015 Toyota plans to commercialise its hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid vehicle, featuring next-generation powertrain technology and approaching what the company considers the ultimate eco-car.
