ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: MAKE NO MISTAKE, MANUFACTURERS ARE NOT LATE! “Hello! Need help?” Most people quickly got used to chatbots on websites, those little chat windows that open in computer screens. These conversational technologies use artificial intelligence (AI), essentially allowing users to ask questions to an expert system (in earlier years) or a deep-learning system (more recently). Industrial equipment suppliers have not remained indifferent to this communication tool, and have found applications for it: directing customers to the right contact, helping them find a solution or a technical document, providing support in understanding a problem, offering guidance in the preparation of a repair, staying online until the machine is running again. While the very first applications for these solutions were focused on medical diagnostic applications, today’s chatbots use the same basic techniques as those used by large social networks. Industrialists are pragmatic about AI: “It works and it can be effective, so we take it and apply it within the framework of our needs and constraints.” However, they don’t stop there when it comes to AI disciplines and their vast potential at the very heart of machines and automated systems. Visual inspection solutions, preventive maintenance resources, decision-support tools, and even automatic control functions: AI has been searching for and finding its place in automation for several years. For AI users, 2019 proved extremely good. By way of example, visual inspection systems combining machine vision and deep learning make it possible to identify defects that are not alike (in size, shape, position) on surfaces that, in addition, are different from one another. At least that’s what Cognex is doing with its new VisionPro ViDi range, and at very high production line speeds.

On the predictive maintenance side, control-command platforms can now enrich and even create their own models based on correlation analyses of recorded data – for example, to identify abnormal situations and therefore potential sources of failure. Remember here the launches at the beginning of the year of Omron’s IA Sysmac range of controllers, for instance, or the FactoryTalk Analytics LogixAI module in Rockwell Automation’s Logix range. Siemens made a similar announcement a few months earlier with its S7-1500 TM NPU module. Another example of preventive maintenance functions is with the Sushi Sensor XS770A, which in early 2019 completed Yokogawa’s OpreX range of sensors for the online monitoring of vibration and surface temperature on industrial equipment. At Schneider Electric, visitors to the IBS show in Paris in early October could see new decision-support features in its EcoStruxure Building range, or its latest solutions for optimizing energy consumption. However, most noticeable in 2019 was the dynamics around Schneider Electric’s agreement with Microsoft for the “AI for Green Energy Incubation Lab” (created in 2018) to host and support start-ups working to transform the energy sector through AI. For its part, Delta Electronics is another company that has just announced (in Taiwan first) a partnership with Microsoft that will accelerate the deployment of AI in its robot applications. Not to forget that ABB and IBM announced the same kind of agreement in 2017 at the Hanover Fair. In short, the development and progress of AI disciplines in the field is proving extremely rapid. The industrial world sometimes has a reputation for being conservative, which hinders the adoption of new technologies in factories. However, manufacturers (and in particular the largest among them, but not exclusively) all have products and projects that use AI. In reality, these are mature technologies that improve every day, like many other technologies before, but probably just faster this time!

MARKET OVERVIEW

PNEUMATIC AUTOMATION: VERSATILE, ATTRACTIVE AND LOW COST Pneumatic technology is an old and well-known friend of industrial automation systems. Simple and accessible, pneumatics delivers several benefits, largely due to the characteristics of its power source: compressed air. Safety, reduced operational costs, ease of implementation and cost-effectiveness are among the main reasons why many European plants continue to favor pneumatic automation. Author: Sílvia Bruin Pereira

T

his school of thought is confirmed by Leonardo Brand, Engineering Supervisor at ASCO-EMERSON, who says: “Pneumatics has become an extremely attractive tool to most companies due to its versatility and cost. Of course, processes in the automotive and mass production/handling sectors traditionally use pneumatics as their primary choice. However, nowadays pneumatics is commonplace in many other industries, including mining, metallurgy, chemical and petrochemical, and pulp and paper.”

MORE INFORMATION

Brand mentions that, in pneumatic automation, his company’s focus is the process market: “Our know-how in this area – which comprises industries such as chemical, mining, pulp and paper, medical and analytical, power generation, and oil refining – makes us capable of presenting differentiated and exclusive pneumatic automation proposals.” According to Brand, among the leading segments is mining, particularly with regard to wastewater recovery, treatment and control processes. Here, the use of pneumatic solutions such as cylinders, directional control valves and air-quality preparation sets is widespread.

MARKET OVERVIEW

Another major focus area is tire manufacturing, especially control systems for autoclaves, where common pneumatic solutions include smart valve terminals and electronic pressure-control valves. The chemical sector is a further example. Pneumatic solutions such as smart valves terminals and air-quality preparation sets are frequently deployed in the fluid-control systems found at chemical plants. Osvaldo Tomio Sato, Product Manager at FESTO, points out that, being a simple force and movement control system, pneumatics may be applied to numerous industrial segments: “Applications are wide-ranging and include the movement of a unit in a packing conveyor, placing workpieces in machine tools, transporting parts in the automotive industry, holding devices in the electroelectronic sector, opening and closing dispensers in the pharmaceutical industry, opening and closing doors on buses and trains, and devices for the selection of grains in the food sector.” Sato says that his company is working across several markets in order to advance the use of pneumatic automation: “By way of example, niches in the food segment include meat and refrigeration, confectionary, chocolate, and dairy products. The main reason for this versatility is that pneumatic automation may be easily implemented in applications such as product transportation, handling, packing and inspection. In addition, this technology can help to increase productivity and hygiene levels. The pneumatic automation components deployed are classified as ‘clean design’ or products made of materials compliant with FDA [Food and Drug Administration] standards, such as pipes, fittings, actuators and valve terminals.” PNEUMATICS AND INDUSTRY 4.0 Flexibility, easy design development and cost are the main advantages of pneumatic automation, according to Brand. “There are, however, processes where installing an efficient pneumatic system, with air reservoirs and distribution and access points, is difficult, because this is not part of the plant’s original design,” he states. “In such cases, using an electric solution is preferable to the creation of ideal conditions for pneumatics.” Brand adds that, on the other hand, in cases where the plant design already includes a pneumatic distribution system, handling, positioning and serial production applications should not be replaced by electrical equipment which, according to him, is three to four times more expensive than pneumatic systems performing the same function.

MORE INFORMATION

“Another characteristic of pneumatics is its ability to work in industrial environments without requiring any kind of special protection,” says Brand. “In contrast, electrical equipment for use in such areas will always require some kind of special protection. Factors such as moisture, vibration, heat and electromagnetic interference do not impact on pneumatic equipment.”

22 | Industry EMEA | November 2019

8

So, is pneumatic automation actually fully integrated to modern industrial processes? According to Brand, the answer is affirmative. “Over the past 15 years, pneumatics has proven a reliable partner for fieldbus, onboard control, data collection and diagnostic functions,” he says. “Together with other types of technology, the pneumatic technology of today offers the capability for migration to Industry 4.0. For instance, modern smart valve terminals with IO-Link communication are now part of our industrial reality.” According to Sato, pneumatic automation is simple: “Compressed air is one of mankind’s oldest energy types, using atmospheric air as a source, which is present and abundantly available everywhere on Earth. Generating compressed air is easy, and its maintenance is straightforward. Furthermore, pneumatic automation provides safe and reliable operation, mainly due to its simplicity.” The application of pneumatic automation has consistently intended to replace human labor in repetitive tasks, thus increasing operational productivity while decreasing production cost. Overall, the idea has always been to allow employee engagement in more rewarding roles, such as preventive maintenance, programming, process improvement, and optimization of the final product to improve quality and reduce cost, making it competitive in European and global markets. Sato reports that his company is continuously modernizing its pneumatic technology product line, and that one of FESTO’s most recent developments is the VTEM (Motion Terminal). “The Motion Terminal uses the ‘digitalized pneumatic’ concept, fusing basic pneumatics and electronics, plus a powerful software controller, in order to create a highly innovative product capable of covering the functions of over 50 individual components,” he explains. “Motion Terminal can be called outstanding thanks to its ability to provide a wide range of functions with just one valve, remotely controlled by ‘Motion Apps’, whose parameters may be altered in real time,” continues Sato. “The product provides, in a single platform, the aspects necessary to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0, such as flexibility, energy efficiency and monitoring, making it an ideal choice for industry’s automation future. Motion Terminal’s digital pneumatics improve automation processes, with benefits extending from faster planning and design phases, to easier commissioning and parameterization. Additionally, operational productivity is enhanced by providing a faster and easier means to convert or modernize a system.” In summary, pneumatic automation is already well established in the market and vendors are complying with the demands of IIoT and Industry 4.0. The technology tends to be favored due to its simplicity and unlimited applications.

a basic machine type and then select the relevant apps to equip it with different functions and features in line with customer requirements.

one controller can perform up to eight movements using the VTEM. Energy consumption is also reduced, while the required installation space is decreased by up to 65%.

Assigning functions via software has the additional benefit of protecting against data tampering, since it is not possible to tell from the outside which functions the valves are executing. Maintenance is also simplified, as long lists of spare and wearing parts become a thing of the past.

Comparing the technology, set-ups with the Festo Motion Terminal offer truly cost-effective alternatives for eight applications. Instead of a valve, a pressure regulator and a pressure sensor or, in other words, three components, only one is required – a valve.

Intrinsic energy efficiency The specially developed motion apps, as well as the leakage diagnostic function, save energy during operation. However, the energy-saving piezo technology for the proportional valve’s preliminary stage, also plays its part.

WITH NIDEC LEROY-SOMER, AHLSTROM-MUNKSJÖ CONSOLIDATES ITS ATTACHMENT TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND WINS EXPORT MARKETS

Meeting market expectations… keeping at the head of the pack of innovators in its field… always serving its customers better. To keep pace with its order book and pursue its development, the Ahlstrom Specialties plant at Saint-Séverin in Charente has recently been expanded. This allows it to play its part fully in the dynamics of its employment catchment area. The plant today comprises four complete manufacturing lines, and all four are comprehensively equipped with Nidec Leroy-Somer motors. Let us consider why.

A

hlstrom-Munksjö produces fibre-based materials and special innovative and ecological papers. It is the leading industrial group in its field, with its HQ in Finland. The group employs 8000 members of staff and operates 45 production units in 14 countries.

MORE INFORMATION

In France, its Saint-Séverin site (in the south of the Charente department) specialises in the production of parchment paper. The site is indeed the world leader in its field. Its main clients are principally to be found in the sectors of the food industry, electronics and aeronautics, offering rapidly expanding markets for this plant, which exports the world over.

22 | Industry EMEA | November 2019

20

Giant-sized… To set the scene, picture a rectilinear machine, several meters wide, several meters high, and around 100 meters long. At one end of the machine you have a spool unwinder from which emerges a strip of paper two to three meters wide, and measuring just several tens of microns thick. This strip of paper then passes between hundreds of steel rollers, which convey the paper strip while ensuring that it remains at the correct tension right along the production line. As it zigzags through the machine, the paper strip covers a total distance of more than 200 meters, moving at a speed of several meters per second. Without going into detail in this article, suffice it to say that from the sheet being unwound at the start of the line to being wound onto a drum at the end of the line the paper travels, in the course of manufacture, at very high speed between the steel rollers (situated transversally the length of the machine) through 4 production stations aligned over

a distance of around 100 meters (coating, drying, finishing, winding). In this enormous machine, the transverse rollers serve to propel the paper strip and regulate its tension (it must not be torn) along a perfectly managed production run. … with real finesse Needless to say, the perfect synchronisation of the rotation of these rollers is one of the keys to success. The slightest unexpected speed deviation with a single one of these rollers would cause the paper strip in production to tear, with a major impact on the production costs. In short, to manufacture high-quality, hi-tech paper it takes finescale control, in the very heart of the machine while manufacturing progresses, of parameters such as humidity level and porosity. Just as important is to ensure the highest operational uniformity of the motors and geared motors involved in rotating the drive rollers.

And this is where Nidec Leroy-Somer comes in. It brings to the table, of course, the technical performance of its electromechanical drive solutions (in particular the CB3000 range of geared motors on the new, recently commissioned production line). Yet the engineers of Ahlstrom-Munksjö also selected this manufacturer for its reactivity. Of course, the reputation of its local partner, SEFI, the French distributor specialised in the field of power transmission, weighed significantly in its favour, with its well-established reputation in the factory environment, in dealings with new works & maintenance managers, and with production managers. It should also be pointed out that the efficiency of the Nidec Leroy-Somer Assembly Centre is recognised in the profession. The service proposed – which incidentally has no equivalent on the market – allows this manufacturer of electric motors and alternators to support its clients, partners and distributors with the service that the latter themselves provide daily to users.

Maintaining control over your production facilities The Ahlstrom Specialties plant has chosen to design and manufacture its machines itself, and to draw on local players in this endeavour. “We take great care with the quality of our products and with controlling our costs,” explains Gérard Giry, Maintenance and Engineering Manager at Ahlstrom Specialties. He adds: “We need to have complete control over our production line.” As is the case in so many extremely specialised or sensitive fields, developing your machines on site is an efficient way of maintaining control over your

production facilities, so as to ensure effective management of their maintenance, or for developing innovation, not to forget the ability to ensure that your manufacturing secrets are kept under wraps.

“To guarantee the care and attention that we wish to offer our clients,” says Mr Giry, “we need to be able to count fully on our suppliers.” He adds: “Since becoming a part of Nidec, 22 | Industry EMEA | November 2019

10 N.m and 14,500 N.m, a power output ranging from 0.06 to 110 kW, reduction ratios of between 1.16 and 252, and high efficiency of between 95 and 98%. It should also be noted that these geared motors are reversible. This equipment is also appreciated for its quiet running.

Leroy-Somer has been able to demonstrate even more attentiveness to the express needs of its clients.” “The manufacturing of high-quality, hi-tech paper requires us being able to guarantee high precision in the automation systems, on the scale of our machines, combined with great finesse.”

MORE INFORMATION

The paper manufacturing principles are well known. In the course of its production, a 2.5 m-wide strip of paper passes through four broad stages: coating, drying, finishing, rolling. This strip of paper goes through the various stages on its production line over a distance of around 100 meters. The paper sheet (200 meters long) enters this line at one end. An enormous roll of paper (weighing some 3 tonnes) is wound in at the other end (35 km of paper per drum). In all, it takes dozens of rotation axes that need to be controlled with the highest degree of finesse and synchronisation. The drive rollers (there are approximately 180 on the line) must all guarantee the same travel speed for the paper to prevent it tearing. NEW NSK BEARINGS FOR ROLLING MILLS OFFER LONG SERVICE LIFE

NSK’s new sealed four-row tapered roller bearing for work rolls in rolling mills.

NSK has developed its latest four-row tapered roller bearings for rolling mills to offer a number of classleading performance and environmental benefits. The work roll bearings use newly developed, waterresistant grease that is fully sealed into the confines of the bearing.

W

ith the new bearings, service life is typically doubled in challenging conditions such as those where there is a high risk of water penetration. In addition, the sealed design means that grease consumption is far less than that exhibited by a conventional “open” bearing, while the risk of contaminating the environment is greatly reduced.

NSK’s new long-life, four-row, sealed tapered roller bearings with new AQGRD grease deliver on a primary demand of rolling mill applications: the requirement for work roll bearings that last. Rolling mills typically use pairs of work rolls to roll slabs of steel or other metals into specific shapes, such as sheets. This work is particularly demanding on the bearings, which have to bear heavy loads at high speeds and temperatures, and endure constant exposure to water sprays and metal particles.

MORE INFORMATION

These severe operating conditions can lead to premature bearing failure due to flaws such as flaking. Flaking occurs when fatigue causes small pieces of bearing material to separate from the smooth surface of the raceway. This effect creates coarse regions that eventually make the bearing inoperable. The principal innovation designed to help combat such issues is the newly developed AQGRD water-resistant grease. Optimised grease composition creates a thicker oil film and protective layer between the raceway and rollers, inhibiting direct contact without lubrication, as well as preventing corrosion. Rust prevention is important as 22 | Industry EMEA | November 2019

harmful defects such as flaking, which compromise bearing life, stem from areas of corrosion. Ultimately, longer service life reduces maintenance costs and increases operational efficiency. Moreover, since the bearings need less frequent replacement, they help to minimise carbon footprint and resource consumption. Aside from the long service life benefits, reduced material and energy consumption will also result in relation to the replacement cycles of conventional bearings, which in turn helps to lower CO2 emissions. Moving forward, NSK will continue developing and manufacturing products geared toward realising a sustainable society. www.nskeurope.com

HIGH PRECISION REDEX RACK AND PINION DRIVES IN THE AERONAUTIC INDUSTRY

The Ecospeed F machining centers from Starrag have been used for the production of wing ribs and other aircraft structural components. Four slewing rings turn the 10-meter-long workpiece carrier by 90 ° with the component to be machined.

Manufacturing wing ribs - just the right way.

F

or the high-precision manufacture of aircraft structural components, MSB GmbH & Co. KG has designed an XXL-size workpiece carrier system and swivel table. The system feeds aluminium blocks up to ten meters in length to a high-performance machining centre. The four synchronous drives of the swivel table were built using gear rim segments and precision planetary gearbox from Redex.

MORE INFORMATION

Aircraft manufacturers and their suppliers are facing tough challenges to meet the airlines rapidly growing demand and to process their order backlog as efficiently as possible. An important step in the extremely complex process chain is the milling of the aluminium wing ribs on high-speed machining centres, which mill the rib structures out of the solid material at high speed and precision. In some cases, more than 95% of the material is removed.

Precise machining at high speed For this task, a well-known Chinese supplier to the aeronautic industry uses several Ecospeed 25100 type machining centres from Starrag Technology GmbH. These machining centres are equipped with a parallel kinematic machining head that enables highly dynamic five-axis simultaneous machining. The spindles run with a nominal power of 120 kW without interruption at 30,000 rpm in S1 mode. With an acceleration of 1 g on all five axes and jerk values of up to 200 m/s³, the linear axes also achieve very high dynamics. The supplier uses these machines for the production of wing ribs and other structural components for various aircraft models. The first three machining centres of this type were put into operation in Korea in 2009. They achieve a maximum cutting volume of up to 10,000 cm³/min and (to name just one example) are capable of transforming a 4-ton aluminium block into a 120 kg complex structural component in less than twenty hours. Rotary table for horizontal machining A typical characteristic of this type of machine is the horizontal machining of vertically positioned aluminium

The synchronous rotary motion is controlled by servo motors and three-stage Redex planetary gears. A maximum torque of approximately 600,000 Nm is applied to the rotary axis. blocks. One of the advantages of this, is that the numerous chips are automatically removed from the working area by gravity. To make this possible the aluminium blocks, which can be up to 10 meters long, are horizontally fit to a carrier pallet before to be swivel into a vertical position. In the latest Ecospeed 25100, now in operation at the aerospace supplier, the entire carrier system and swivel table for XXL-size workpieces were designed and manufactured by MSB GmbH & Co. KG in Bischofsheim/Rhön, Germany, on behalf of Starrag Technology GmbH: The workpiece carriers are 10,000 mm long with a width of 2,500 mm and a total weight of approx. 60,000 kg (incl. the workpiece). The pallet is clamped onto the carrier by hydraulics, fixed and rotated 90 ° for milling. This rotary movement has to be performed with great precision, because even slight irregularities of the movement along the carrier might introduce unacceptable tension into the final machined component.

This mechatronic solution not only required considerably less space but also has further advantages. Since there is no need for a hydraulic unit with piping and hoses to the consumers, there is no risk of leakage. In addition, the power and cooling requirements of electromechanical drives are significantly lower compared to hydraulics. The drive technology chosen by MSB is therefore not only compact and highly precise, but also clean, safe and energy efficient. Synchronous rotation with high precision The Redex engineers designed a swivel drive consisting of four individual gear rim segments. The rotary motion provided by servo motors is transmitted to the output pinion via a three-stage KRPX series planetary gear directly connected to the motor with a 310 ratio and a maximum output torque of 10,050 Nm. In total, a maximum torque of approximately 600,000 Nm has to be applied to the rotary axis.

MORE INFORMATION

High-precision swivel drives: Mechatronics replaces hydraulics This requires a very high level of synchronicity of the four actuators mounted along the swivel table. Jürgen Enders, Managing Director of MSB: “We have already developed many similar systems. We have often implemented the swiveling movement with hydraulic cylinders. But this was out of the question for this project because the hydraulics

take up a lot of space and require a foundation with a substructure, when the user wanted to remain flexible. That’s why the designers opted for an electromechanical made with 4 gear segment driven by servo motors in association with compact three-stage planetary gearboxes. And Redex was chosen as the precision gearboxes manufacturer.”

which was also supplied by Redex. The gear rim with Modul 8 teeth are hardened and ground. KRPX: Designed for precision drives in the machine tool industry The KRP/KRPX series Redex gearboxes have been specially developed for use in high precision rack and pinion drives for machine tools. They are characterized by extreme positioning accuracy, which is ensured, for example, by a very precise tooth engagement on the gear rim segment. The very rigid gear design contributes to the precision of the entire drive system.

MORE INFORMATION

In many cases, these gears (electrically braced against each other) are also used as twin drives for high-precision positioning drives, e.g. for portal milling machines or tool tables. Two further advantages for the application described here are the enclosed design of the housing, which prevents the penetration of chips, and the highly compact and cubic dimensions of the gearbox, which is mounted directly on the base frame of the swivel table without needing any additional mounting brackets. Conclusion: Good cooperation yields a perfect result The designers from MSB and Redex worked closely together on the development of the rotary table drive. Jürgen Enders, Managing director at MSB: “Redex closely helped us in the selection of the components and in the project planning.”

In the meantime, the pallet system (including the rotary table) has been installed in China, together with the highspeed machining centre. The plant produces wing ribs with high productivity and precision and thus contributes to the rapid supply of high-quality structural components to customers in the aviation industry. MSB has also implemented large rotary tables with electromechanical rack and pinion drives from Redex in other similar projects. www.redex-group.com

WHITE PAPER 2- OR 3- BEAM PROTECTIVE SENSORS?

Multiple light beam safety devices are used for access guarding at machines and systems. The required arrangement for these protective devices is described in the harmonized standard EN ISO 13855, which replaced the previous version EN 999 in 2010.

A

s introduction of EN ISO 13855 has resulted in changes to details, the question repeatedly arises as to whether 2-beam safety light barriers can still be used on new machines. For existing machines, the question is whether 2-beam systems have to be replaced by 3-beam systems. This document provides recommendations in this regard. When did en ISO 13855 come into effect? Harmonized standards are listed in the “Official Journal of the European Union”. EN ISO 13855:2010 has been listed there since November 2010 when it replaced the previous standard EN 999:1998.

MORE INFORMATION

What has changed? What changes have been made in EN ISO 13855 compared to EN 999 with respect to the use of 2-beam or 3-beam protective sensors? In EN ISO 13855, beam heights are defined in order to prevent persons from both crawling under and stepping over a protective field. For this purpose, the bottom beam must not be installed higher than 300 mm above the reference plane and the top beam must not be installed lower than 900 mm above the reference plane. The values are given in the normative part in chapter 6.2.2. 22 | Industry EMEA | November 2019

34

The table from EN 999 with the predefined combination of number of beams and beam height has been moved to informative appendix E of EN ISO 13855. Technically, the table is therefore no longer part of the standard. Why, according to en ISO13855, is a 2-beam protective device normally insufficient? A 2-beam system has a beam spacing of 500 mm. If, as specified in EN ISO 13855, crawling under is to be prevented, then the lower beam must be at a height of ≤ 300 mm. The upper beam is then at a height of ≤ 800 mm; at this height, however, stepping over is possible. If the device is installed in such a way that stepping over is prevented, then the upper beam must be at a height of ≥ 900 mm. The lower beam is then at a height of ≥ 400 mm, whereby crawling under is possible. In comparison, a 3-beam system automatically satisfies both conditions, as shown in the figure below. According to the standard, which areas of application are still possible for 2-beam systems? Informative appendix E of EN ISO 13855 (technically not part of the standard) contains the following note: “A beam height of ≤ 400 mm for the bottom beam [see also 6.2.2.a] may be used only if the risk assessment permits this.” In each

NEWS

directive, therefore, there is technically no obligation to refer to or comply with a standard such as EN ISO 13855. However, compliance with harmonized standards offers legal benefits. individual case, the user must therefore be able to argue on the basis of the respective risk assessment, why a 2-beam protective device is sufficient at the location concerned. It is false to expect that EN ISO 13855 will provide any form of supporting argument. How important are the requirements of type C standards? Type C standards each apply to specific machine types and are not transferable to other machine types. Type C standards have priority over type B standards, like EN ISO 13855. In the case of content-related deviations between type B and type C standards, the content of the type C standard applies, even if the most recent type C standard does not reflect the current state of the art. Type C standards too are revised at regular intervals, which generally means that changes to the current content of type B standards are to be expected.

Summary JJ Since 2010 (EN ISO 13855), 2-beam safety light barriers no longer correspond to the state of the art. They should be used or continue to be used only if the risk assessment, the hazard assessment or the most recent type C standard for the used machine type permits this. www.leuze.co.uk

MORE INFORMATION

For manufacturers and integrators What requirements result from the European machinery directive? The machinery directive 2006/42/EC sets out the following requirements in Appendix I Sect. 1: The manufacturer of a machine or the manufacturer’s authorized representative shall ensure that a risk assessment is carried out in order to determine the health protection and safety requirements applicable for the machine. The machine must then be designed and constructed taking the results of the risk assessment into consideration. According to the machinery

For operating companies What requirements result from the European Use of Work Equipment directive 2009/104/EC? According to the Use of Work Equipment directive, employers are obliged to provide safe work equipment. For this purpose, the hazards posed by the work equipment must be assessed at regular intervals. If the assessment identifies a hazard, the protective measures must be adapted accordingly. Conversion from a 2-beam safety light barrier to a 3-beam safety light barrier is therefore necessary if the result of the hazard assessment indicates this.

Fischer Connectors’ R&D Director Jérôme Dabonneville adds: “Fischer Freedom™ is instrumental in making our customers’ lives easier. Its plug & use technology is not only an innovation enabler and accelerator in terms of connectivity and device development. It also allows what we call a ‘connectivity by design’ process. Connectivity design can (and should) take place upstream in the device design process, not downstream. With this new versatile and modular technology at hand, our customers – mainly design engineers and integrators – can now design their devices from the outset. The new product extensions widen the choice of solutions out of their engineering toolkit.”

Fischer Freedom™ was launched in June 2018 by Fischer Connectors, the global provider of ultra-reliable and highperformance connectivity solutions, to offer a breakthrough plug & use technology. Thanks to the patent-pending technological innovations in mating, locking and materials, of its first product, the Fischer LP360™ 7-pin connector, the connectivity solution has received four awards in one year, and has been recognized as being able “to change the way connectivity is done”, as a LEAP award judge commented.

NEW BACKSHELL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

The One Arm Composite Backshell developed by SUNBANK is specifically designed to offer a robust and unique performance in terms of reliability and functionality for defense, aerospace and other harsh environment applications.

O

ur design team took into consideration different scenarios and needs for protecting cable connections from damage and providing better strain relief. The One Arm backshell family comes in 3 types of configurations, Straight, 45 °, and 90 °. It is designed to satisfy requirements for all sizes of MIL-DTL-38999 Series I, II, and III connectors.

MORE INFORMATION

The One Arm does not only provide unique support and strain relief to open wire bundles, it also offers a reliable grounding option with its solderable ground lug. Due to its flexibility, this new product can also support different plating combinations to suit the needs required for specific applications.

The One Arm is also designed to be economically costeffective but highly reliable, with high grade thermoplastic materials intended for critical applications and environments, especially on military and commercial EWIS applications that require weight per part savings, corrosion resistance and electromagnetic interference protection. The One Arm has many advantages compared to its die casted metallic counterpart. The composite families use high grade engineered thermoplastic and are not prone to electromagnetic disturbance, “stealth ability”, and are stronger in terms of vibrations due to less harmonic resonance because of the weight reduction (40% lesser compared to Aluminum). The weight savings of the backshell will have a positive impact on the total weight of the electrical system and contribute to fuel savings and a lighter environmental footprint per aircraft. The development of One Arm technology also provides the benefits of detent self-locking, a ratcheting coupling ring using non-corrosive clips located within. The audible ratcheting noise during the installation process guarantees correct engagement. www.souriau.com

INNOVATION AND AGILITY IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN: ECO-RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTIVITY

Today, most companies are seeking to move towards sustainable and ecologically responsible development, but in general these transformations are costly and even reduce their profitability. However, SOURIAU represents an exception to this rule, celebrating in 2019 the first anniversary of a major logistical change.

MORE INFORMATION

Logistical agility SOURIAU has been partnering with Dachser’s Vendée agency for more than 15 years, an international provider of transport and logistics solutions, for the transport of parts and components between its sites in Sarthe and Morocco. Since April 2018, the two companies have been developing new business models to allow them to save costs and time and make gains in productivity. It is thanks to this close partnership between these two actors that the idea of sharing trailer space, while increasing the rotation frequency, was born. The concept is simple: co-loading goods for several customers in the same trailer to Morocco optimizes the fill rate, which reduces the cost to customers, and has allowed the carrier to offer these extra departures to other customers to reduce the free capacity.

“In the past, we had a dedicated van that used to go back and forth. Then we gradually started to try out co-loading with one, then two rotations per week,” explains Sylvain GUITTET, logistics manager at SOURIAU-SUNBANK. “But the average waiting time between each departure was 84 hours, it was too long for us. In the spirit of lean, we were looking for solutions to improve the smoothness of the flow and increase reliability.” A local partnership The proximity between the two actors and their cooperation over the past 15 years have encouraged them to work together to improve the current service. After a series of negotiations, they agreed on a plan with 4 departures per week instead of 2, with an extended transport time of 60 to 72 hours. For SOURIAU the advantages are considerable. Apart from a reduction in the waiting time between each departure of almost 2 days, reliability is high with more than 98% of loads delivered on time. Considering any delays which impacts the production lines can quickly generate significant

financial losses, better reliability even if lead times are longer is preferable to the opposite situation. The results This initiative has reduced the waiting times between each departure to an average of 42 hours, a 50% reduction, which optimizes manufacturing lead times. Smoothing activity at both sites also optimizes staff time during loading and unloading. With 2 departures per week, loading and unloading generated sustained peaks of activity, with slumps in activity in between. A more moderate and smoother work intensity improves the safety and reliability of employees. This innovative and agile transformation of logistics delivers significant benefits for both the carrier and the customer, as well as for the environment. www.souriau.com
