FURNITURE ASSEMBLY – WITH ENSENSO N35

All set – thanks to robot vision.

A

s part of a research project, scientists at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) have developed a robot that can independently assemble the individual components of an IKEA chair without interruption in less than ten minutes. The robot consists of an Ensenso N35 3D camera from IDS and two robot arms equipped with grippers to pick up objects. The robot hardware is designed to simulate how people mount objects: the “eyes” are replaced by a 3D camera and the “arms” by industrial robot arms capable of moving in six axes. Each arm is equipped with parallel grippers for picking up objects. Force sensors are attached to the wrists to determine how strongly the “fingers” grip and how strongly they bring objects into contact with each other.

The robot starts the assembly process by taking 3D images of the parts lying on the ground to create a map of the estimated positions of the various components. This task is performed by an Ensenso 3D camera from IDS. The camera works according to the “projected texture stereo vision” principle (Stereo Vision), which imitates human vision. Two cameras acquire images from the same scene from two different positions. Although the cameras see the same scene content, there are different object positions according to the cameras’ projection rays. Special matching algorithms compare the two images, search for corresponding points and visualize all point displacements in a Disparity Map. The Ensenso software can determine the 3D coordination for each individual image pixel or object point, in this case the chair components.

Complexity of Robot Vision The challenge is to locate the components as precisely, quickly and reliably as possible in a confusing environment. This is ensured by the Ensenso camera’s light-intensive projector. This produces a high-contrast texture on the object surface by using a pattern mask, even under difficult light conditions. weak or non-existent object surface structure found on the components of the IKEA chair. Although not required for this application, the N35 model used here even goes one step further: thanks to the integrated FlexView projector technology the pattern projected on the object surface of the components can be shifted to vary the texture on the surface. Acquiring multiple image pairs with different textures of the same object scene produces a lot more image points. Thus the components of the chair are displayed in 3D in a much higher resolution to make them easier for the robot to recognize. Another advantage is the robot hand-eye calibration function of the Ensenso software. Using a calibration plate, it ensures that the position of the camera coordinate system (in this case the stationary camera) is determined with respect to the base coordinate system (position of the component). This enables the robot's hand to react precisely to the image information and reaches exactly its destination.

Outlook The robot developed by the scientists at NTU Singapore is used for research into clever manipulation, an area of robotics that requires precise control of the forces and movements of special robot hands or fingers. This requires perfect interaction of all hardware and software components. 3D image processing using Ensenso stereo 3D cameras is the key to the solution. It convinces not only through accuracy, but also in terms of economy and speed. This marks real progress in furniture assembly – and not only here.

Furniture assembly in less than ten minutes “For a robot, putting together an IKEA chair with such precision is more complex than it looks,” explains Professor Pham Quang Cuong of NTU. “The job of assembly, which may come naturally to humans, has to be broken down into different steps, such as identifying where the different chair parts are, the force required to grip the parts, and making sure the robotic arms move without colliding into each other. Through considerable engineering effort, we

developed algorithms that will enable the robot to take the necessary steps to assemble the chair on its own.” The result: the NTU robot installs the “Stefan” chair from Ikea in just 8 minutes and 55 seconds. According to Professor Pham Quang Cuong, artificial intelligence will make the application even more independent and promising in the future: “We are looking to integrate more artificial intelligence into this approach to make the robot more autonomous so it can learn the different steps of assembling a chair through human demonstration or by reading the instruction manual, or even from an image of the assembled product.”

he outward appearance of this series with simple control electronics, (formerly represented by “SI” motors, now called “dMove”) is mechanically interchangeable with previous versions. Inside the motors, there is are new control electronics. Already in I/O version it allows to assign functions to the digital inputs - from simple speed controlling via analog input or fixed speed via digital inputs to combinations of current and speed control optimization. Also, digital outputs can be assigned to functions. In addition to the electronics upgrade, the motor was optimized to reach higher output power. All of these new features provide enhanced performance in a very cost effective package.

Compared to the former “SI” motors, it is possible to integrate dMove versions as slaves in CANopen networks and to control them via profile CiA 402 or even simpler programming via Dunkermotoren quick start commands. Here, all functionalities include positioning, speed and current operation are available. For projects, Dunkermotoren offers versions of the motor which are parameterized and controlled via an RS 485 interface. Dunkermotorens newly developed commissioning software “Drive Assistant 5” helps to set up the motors intuitively. The dMove series is suitable for a wide variety of applications which do not require a highresolution encoder. The new MemoRail Modbus modules from Knick, which feature a modular housing with a width of just 17.5 mm, not only transmit measured values and diagnostic data to the Modbus master, they also enable unrestricted access to device configuration and sensor calibration through the Modbus RTU protocol. In this way, a dual-channel MemoRail model provides four readings as well as temperature. The network address for rapid Modbus configuration is set via DIP switches on the front panel. The 24 V DC supply can be connected either via TBUS or via a cable connected to the terminals at the back. Red and green LEDs indicate the device status, communication interruptions, defective sensors or device settings unsuitable to the sensor as well as the device’s maintenance requirements. User ratings as quality indicator Another step to continuous quality improvement is the quite new user rating function. As is common on other portals like Amazon, it allows users the possibility to rate the offered contents by awarding it stars. The goal is to rate and qualify the product’s digital data, not the product itself. In the sense of a community mind, users thereby provide helpful feedback from their everyday work that provides orientation for other users but that also gives manufacturers valuable indicators from the market to continue developing their data. The users themselves thus can have an influence on the data quality. Sorting options for improved user experience Based on the rating function, users can directly sort search results in the portal using two additional options: filtering device data according the highest-rated devices or, alternatively, according to the amount of downloads the device data set has generated to that point. This way users know exactly which items have the best quality device data or which device is used most often in its product group. Naturally the assumption is that engineers will intensively use the rating function, which is the only way it will have

The owner-managed Schweiger GmbH & Co. KG from Uffing at Staffelsee in Bavaria specializes in one of the most demanding industries: the automotive industry. For Managing Director Anton Schweiger and his approximately 75 employees, this means having to meet the highest standards of precision and quality with every injection mold produced. Additionally, they are competing in a global market, which, among other things, is subject to enormous cost pressure.

However, facing the strain of global competition, the qualified toolmaker and his team have adjusted and positioned themselves accordingly. They rely on an automated process chain which ensures absolute security and ends with injection molds that meet all requirements. In 2016, for example, the company built a new production hall and invested in two DMC 210U and 270U 5-axis DMG Mori machining centers, which are capable of processing even XXL components in one clamping operation. Equipped with an appropriate pallet automation, the machines run around the clock seven days a week—and all with just one-person shifts. On the weekends they run completely unmanned. This requires highest process reliability across all relevant components and functions. In this respect, Anton Schweiger has also focused on tool clamping technology, the often overlooked interface between spindle and tool. It bears great responsibility for the quality of the machining, the service life of the spindle and the tool life. When the toolmaker bought the first HSC machine about 20 years ago, he switched from mechanical collet chucks to HAIMER shrink fit chucks because of the improved runout accuracy. common.” “If you take the example of the shrink fit chucks, this can be seen in the runout accuracy, which is, by default, below 3 μm.” This is an important prerequisite for the tool makers from Uffing. After all, they do not produce injection molds for cheap consumables, they create highly sophisticated molds used in premium vehicles—for example used to make headlight end plates in 2-component injection molding. These customers place high demands on the end products and do not accept the slightest blemish. Accordingly, the injection molds have to meet similar requirements: as a rule, surfaces should be smooth as glass and tolerances of less than 2/100 mm must be maintained.

One of Schweiger’s main areas of focus in production is the milling of large complex molds, whereby individual workpieces can weigh up to nine tons. The cavities are often very deep. Typically between 300 to 400 mm, sometimes even up to 500 or 600 mm deep. This requires slim shrink fit tool holders, the use of shrink fit extensions as well as tools with extremely long shanks. “Another strength of Haimer. The company offers a large variety of tool holders standard. If required, however, we can always order a wide range of special designs,” emphasizes production manager Orterer. He points again to the extremely good runout accuracy properties, which apply equally to standard and special tool holder designs. A long tool life enables unmanned operation In general, a longer spindle life means considerable costs savings, but the tool live is even more important in automated production. “In order to work unmanned, I need an absolutely reliable, long-lasting system of spindle, tool holder and tool,” explains Anton Schweiger. Schweiger machines many large injection molds automatically in one clamping operation—for 40 to 50, sometimes even 100 hours, non-stop. A broken tool or even a spindle damage during unmanned operation would be fatal. In addition, a rigid and stable connection is important to achieve the requested surface quality. “A key to this is the Haimer tool holders,” adds the company owner, “they enable process-reliable machining.” Not every requirement of the toolmaker can be optimally fulfilled with standard tool holders. Anton Schweiger especially appreciates the close cooperation with the HAIMER specialists and the flexibility of the company in Igenhausen. “For us it is important that Haimer listens to the users,” emphasizes the entrepreneur. His HAIMER contact, Oliver Lechner, sales manager for Southern Germany, always responds quickly to inquiries. Lechner comments, “After that, we supply Schweiger with the required custom-made products, such as special, conically shaped face mill arbors that allow the machining of cavities up to 360 mm depth.” Anton Schweiger adds, “These tool holders are perfectly adapted to the tool diameter and the respective cavities.

Capacity extension for series production of NORDAC LINK Whether for series production devices, individually configurable products or one-offs, – the modern, automated and flexible production structure in Aurich enables orders of any size to be produced. A batch size of 1 is also achievable without further set-up. The demand for individual adaptations is increasing and the present high proportion of customised devices is continually growing. In 2017, a further increase resulted from the successful introduction of the NORDAC LINK field distributor. The drive controller for flexible, decentralised installation is freely configurable according to the particular requirements and application and provides considerably more options for customisation than the previous products. For the production of this series, a new assembly line was commissioned last year and the production area was extended by 400 m2 and the warehouse area was extended by 1,000 m2. On receipt, each package is given a 2D code and can therefore be continuously traced until it is used. The automated small parts warehouse (AKL) with 2,000 six-fold segmented containers is centrally integrated into the production process and is used not only to store components, but also for semi-finished products. After the SMD department, the assembled modules are returned to the AKL, from where they are removed for further THT processing. This implements an automatic FIFO procedure (First In – First Out) within the production process. As almost all products are produced directly according to customers' orders, only a short production lead time and storage buffer are required. An extensive and stringent quality control process guarantees the high quality and reliability of NORD products.

ADEUNIS AND ARC INFORMATIQUE JOIN FORCES TO CREATE A BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM SOLUTION (BMS) INTEGRATING THE IOT UNIVERSE AT THE GRENOBLE ALPES UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Two recognized player in IoT technologies are integrating their solutions to achieve unprecedented IoT equipment integration with an existing Building Management System (BMS) using LoRaWAN technology at the heart.

he Grenoble Alpes University Hospital’s technical teams wanted to be able to instrument and control various equipment quickly, inexpensively and without cabling (Ethernet and power). The Grenoble Hospital asked Adeunis and ARC Informatique the question of how to best solve this operational challenge.

In addition, the Hospital expressed the wish to do this with their existing BMS software without adding additional software layers. PcVue supervision published by ARC Informatique, is the BMS in charge of managing two of the Hospital’s sites, the GTB and the GTE site. The first step, of this project consisted of a LoRaWAN radio coverage study of the site. This study, done by the Adeunis team, who are experts in this field, made it possible to identify the best location of the LoRa antenna, to ensure the zones (floors, buildings, parking, etc.) are correctly covered to allow desired positioning of the Adeunis® IoT sensors.

The LoRaWAN architecture makes it possible to set up a private network, specifically in indoor and deep indoor configurations, while taking advantage of the radio coverage of LoRaWan’s “Long Range” network. Indeed, only one antenna at the top of a building (15th floor) can cover almost all buildings on the site but also reach a second site about 6kms away. The cost of the network infrastructure is therefore very small when compared to a WiFi solution.

FLANGE PLATE KDS-FP - CABLE MANAGEMENT AT ITS BEST

With the KDS-FP flange plate, CONTA-CLIP takes the tool-free click-and-push concept of their cable entry system KDSClick to a larger scale for control cabinet construction, and are launching the new, patentpending solution. With this system extension, the connection technology experts primarily address the needs of series machine and special purpose machinery manufacturers, who are dealing with wiring requirements for cabinet packing that keep changing all the time.

DS-FP is an extra-flexible solution for managing cables and pneumatic or hydraulic tubes: the number and diameters of the required openings can be seamlessly adapted at any time without drilling, sawing or other machining. At all times, the system reliably provides IP66 sealing.

First, a cavity with standard dimensions in the cabinet wall is fully and tightly sealed by screwing on the flange plate. Then, up to three plate segments can be broken off at predetermined breaking points as needed without the use of tools. Each removed segment reveals a 40x110mm duct that can be further divided into up to ten frame openings by snapping frame inlays from the KDSClick series into place. The inlays are available as plain partitions, T-pieces or cross and double cross form to allow for the required custom dimensioning of the frame openings.

CONTA-CLIP offer a continually expanding range of different sealing elements (currently numbering about 100) for sealing lines and tubes of various diameters as well as feeding multiple cables through one frame opening. The sealing elements, which feature a wave cut at the side, are simply placed around the wires and ensure not only a precise and tight seal but also provide the connections with a reliable strain relief. After the wires are sheathed, the elements are inserted from the inside of the cabinet and pushed to the outside through the frame openings defined by the inlays. Thanks to the conical tapering, the sealing elements are easily and effortlessly pushed into the frame opening/inlays and just as easily removed for new or additional wiring. Unused frame openings are safely closed off with sealing plugs. This ensures comfortable changes to the wiring, even for single cables, without having to disassemble the frame. Two flange plate types are initially available: KDS-FP-2x10/24 and KDS-FP-3 x 10/24 for up to 20 or up to 30 configurable
