

Welcome! After 25 seasons of local and international accolades, and naming the festival “…one of the highlights — in some years, THE highlight — of the summer here,” iPalpiti festival transitions into biennial production.
In this 26th interim summer season, we bring you the “striking,” “remarkable,” “brilliant” Trio Zadig from Paris. The Trio, with a blessing from the legendary founder of the Beaux Arts Trio, Menahem Pressler, is poised to become THE TRIO of its generation.
First heard in LA in 2019, the Trio made waves in Southern California with “take-your-breath-away performances,” thunderous ovations, even shouts of “We will adopt you now!” The highlight was their solo with the iPalpiti orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall, in “Fantasia Hungariana … a de facto triple concerto showcase for the festival’s charismatic ensemble-in-residence, Trio Zadig (Boris Borgolotto, violin; Marc Girard-Garcia, cello; Ian Barber, piano).” —LA Times, Richard Ginell
Their scheduled return to LA in July 2020 as soloists at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto turned into a virtual “In the Time of Corona” festival: the Trio recorded a very special program with LOVE from Paris to our audiences from the famed Fondation Singer-Polignac castle. And, for iPalpiti’s 25th anniversary, the Trio played a Happy Anniversary from Paris!
This season the Trio comes with new programs, including the US premiere of their award-winning Orpheus project and “From Love to Loss: Young Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff.”

With the blessing and support of the late Lord Yehudi Menuhin — after years of collaboration, friendship, and conversations about the future of classical music with Eduard and Laura Schmieder — Young Artists International was born in 1997.
In 2008, we became iPalpiti Artists International. (ee-PAHL-pit-ee is Italian for “heartbeats.”) From the beginning, our mission has been to discover and support post-conservatory musicians, whose talents were destined to make them the leading classical musicians of their generation. Sometimes referred to as a “Musical Peace Corps,” iPalpiti has created an international network of classical artists, forging lifetime associations that transcend the conflicts of our time. Our mission attracted the attention of a group of the world’s leading classical musicians, who joined as Artistic Advisors, with the Great Dame of the Violin Ida Haendel, CBE as Honorary President. With their support and keen ear for talent, we have been able to promote the most exceptional young professional musicians from around the globe.
Our program grew from a six-artist festival in 1998 into an annual production of international significance, centered on the iPalpiti Orchestral Ensemble of International Laureates with Maestro Eduard Schmieder as conductor. In addition to the iPalpiti Festival of International Laureates at our home base in Los Angeles, iPalpiti has been an invited ensemble-in-residence in Japan, France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Korea, Austria, Slovenia, and Israel, performing to sold-out audiences in venues from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to Carnegie Hall in New York.
Since 1998, iPalpiti Artists International has:
• Presented awards and scholarships to over 400 outstanding young musicians in 54 countries.
• Presented more than 600 private and public concerts promoting young exceptional artists nationwide, including international tours.
• Presented annual “Benefactors Concert Series” throughout the years in private estates.
• Released 25 CDs of iPalpiti Orchestra & Soloists in live performances.
• Created the Mentor Program and Student Coalition for the Arts for 7-12th graders to nurture the growth of interests, personal confidence and building a future audience.
• Released three short documentaries about iPalpiti and its Festival.
In 2007, iPalpiti celebrated its 10th anniversary with a New York Carnegie Hall debut to a rave review in the New York Times . Now a bi-coastal presence in the US, iPalpiti is an ensemble-in-residence at Temple University in Philadelphia, with “iPalpiti Musicales” has been presented in New York at the home of Susan & Charles Avery Fisher since 2007. In 2009, iPalpiti expanded its festival to the East Coast, with performances in Philadelphia (Kimmel Center), a finale concert at Carnegie Hall, and returned to the East Coast in 2011.
iPalpiti’s Festivals have been featured in publications such as the STRAD magazine (1999, 2004, 2013), Strings magazine (1998, 2004) and the Los Angeles Times (1998, 2003, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2017), calling the Festival’s performances “world-class” and “take-your-breath-away demonstrations of musicianship and technique.”

Hello, dear friends! Thank you for joining us tonight on this incredible musical journey where we honor the enduring legacy of Camille Saint-Saëns. We have curated a unique program that offers a different perspective on Saint-Saëns, not only as a composer but also as an ingenious transcriber and arranger of other composers’ music. As we shine a spotlight on Saint-Saëns this evening, we will traverse the musical landscapes of Franz Liszt, Jean-Philippe Rameau, and of course, Saint-Saëns himself.
Our program opens with Saint-Saëns’ arrangement of Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem, “Orpheus” (S. 98). “Orpheus” is a musical testament to the mythological figure known for his tragic love story and exceptional musicianship. Originally composed for a large orchestra, Saint-Saëns, with his profound understanding of musical texture, masterfully reduces the vast orchestral sound to a compact yet equally expressive trio version, in the process bringing Liszt’s music to new life.
Our next piece, Rameau’s Pièces de clavecin en concerts 1 and 5, were initially intended for harpsichord, accompanied by a violin or flute and a second violin or viol. Saint-Saëns transcribes these Baroque masterpieces with a meticulous and scholarly approach, retaining their authentic charm while rendering them in a fresh, 19th-century idiom.
The grand finale of tonight’s performance is Saint-Saëns’ Trio for piano, violin, and cello in E minor, Op. 92. As one of his most mature works, this ambitious and skillfully constructed composition showcases Saint-Saëns at his most confident and imaginative. With its five contrasting movements, Saint-Saëns weaves a rich musical tapestry marked by deeply expressive lyricism, lively dance rhythms, and a striking display of counterpoint. As we perform this trio, you may be reminded of a grand arch, as Saint-Saëns brilliantly integrates all the diverse musical elements into a unified and cohesive whole.
Tonight, we hope to deepen your appreciation of Saint-Saëns, the multifaceted genius who was not only a composer but also a brilliant pianist, organist, improviser, and a pioneer in music history. Hello, dear listeners! We’re Trio Zadig. We’re delighted you’ve joined us to explore and enjoy an evening of music that’s very close to our hearts.
Let’s start our journey with the first brushstrokes of Dmitri Shostakovich’s musical career. Aged just seventeen, Dmitri penned his Piano Trio No.1 as an ode to his first love, Tatyana Glivenko. Bursting with raw emotion, this piece was Shostakovich’s way of serenading Tatyana from afar. It’s a rollercoaster ride, from dreamy Impressionist-like episodes to moments echoing Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Glazunov. We’ll also hear the seedlings of his “obsession with the Grotesque” – a trait that didn’t please everyone at the time, but one that Shostakovich wore as a badge of honor.
The young Shostakovich would often play this trio as accompaniment to silent films in his job as a cinema pianist. As we perform, try to imagine the visuals that could go along with the music. Perhaps it’ll give you a new perspective on this work!
After the break, we dive into Sergei Rachmaninoff’s heartfelt Trio élégiaque No.2. There’s something about Russian composers using piano trios for tributes or memorials, and this trio is Rachmaninoff’s touching homage to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Composed when Rachmaninoff was only twenty, this piece encapsulates his shock and sorrow at Tchaikovsky’s untimely death.
Inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio, Rachmaninoff crafted a demanding piano part for himself, complete with an expansive cadenza-like passage. His musical signature is evident throughout, and the second movement cleverly incorporates a theme from his symphonic poem “The Rock,” which Tchaikovsky had intended to conduct.
2023 marks the 80th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s death, and performing his Elegiac Trio No.2 is our way of paying tribute to this legendary figure in classical music.
So let’s immerse ourselves in these moving pieces of music, full of love, loss, and everything in between. Let’s celebrate the genius of these two great composers together, exploring their hidden gems and reveling in the beauty of their music. Thank you for embarking on this exciting journey with us. Awarded 11 international prizes, the Zadig Trio captivates audiences with its virtuosity, elegance and irresistible enthusiasm.
Friendship is at the core of the Zadig Trio’s strength and authenticity. Boris Borgolotto and Marc Girard Garcia are childhood friends who studied together at the Paris Conservatoire National de Musique and at the University of Music in Vienna. Upon their return to France, they crossed paths with Ian Barber, an American pianist from the renowned studio of Andre Watts at the University of Indiana. The chemistry between them is immediately apparent, and they decide to combine their talents and found the Zadig Trio.
The name comes from Voltaire’s eponymous character, Zadig (from the Hebrew for the ‘just’ and the Arabic for the ‘truthful’). Much like the music that the Trio performs, the story of Zadig is fantastically entertaining, while touching upon universal and uncompromising truths about the nature of reality.
In just a few years, the Trio has become very successful and won numerous awards, including the First Prize of the “Fnapec Musiques d’Ensemble” – in the footsteps of renowned ensembles like the Ysaÿe Quartet, the Ebene Quartet and the Wanderer Trio – as well as the Second Prize of the Fischoff Competition (USA). The Zadig Trio is now an “associated artist” in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel. They are also residents at the Singer-Polignac Foundation in Paris and the Musical Academy of Villecroze.
The Zadig Trio has performed all over the world, from the USA to Taiwan, as well as in prestigious halls like the BOZAR, Shanghai City Theater, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Paris’ Philharmonic, Salle Cortot, and Debut with iPalpiti orchestra at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. In parallel with this demanding schedule, the Trio has met with great artists who have contributed to the development of its musical expression, most notably Alfred Brendel and Menahem Pressler.
Due to its auspicious beginning, the Zadig Trio has been invited to several broadcast shows on French (France Musique, France Inter), Belgian (Musiq’3 (RTBF) and Swiss (RTS2) public radios, as well as on Mezzo TV and Culturebox.
The Zadig Trio has already recorded three CD’s: “Something in Between”, “The Seasons”, and “Orpheus” which have received distinctions such as the four f’s (fff) of Télérama, “coup de coeur” from Classica and Figaro, and also “CD of the day” by France Musique.
From Haydn to contemporary composers, the Zadig Trio’s audacity and freshness gives youth and vitality to the piano trio repertoire. The depth and sincerity of their interpretations, as well as their vivid, poetic sound, make them the creators of captivating performances. Just like Voltaire’s hero, the Trio promises to have a long and adventurous life.
Boris Borgolotto plays a 1750 violin by the famous Italian maker Carlo Antonio Testore. Marc Girard Garcia plays a Frank Ravatin cello, generously loaned to him by the El Pasito association.
IAN BARBER, pianist , received his Performance and Artist Diploma at Indiana University in America under the guidance of Andre Watts. In 2008, he received the 1st Prize of Indiana University’s concerto competition and in 2010 the first prize of the international piano academy of Freiburg. He has also worked with several prestigious teachers including Jullian Martin and Yoheved Kaplinsky from the Juilliard School of Music, and French pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and JeanClaude Pennetier. Winner of several competitions including Wells Music/Yamaha competitions, he was twice chosen to serve a two-year term on the Young Musicians Foundation Roster and has been a featured soloist with numerous orchestras including Colorado Symphony and National Repertory Orchestra. Since 2012 he has been living in Paris and performing throughout Europe.
BORIS BORGOLOTTO, violinist, began playing the violin at the age of seven at the National Conservatory of Toulouse and continued at the National Conservatory of Boulogne-Billancourt, where he was awarded a unanimous first prize from the jury and prizes of Chamber Music, Analysis and Musical Culture. He graduated from Paris Conservatory (CNSM) in 2009 with 1st prize and honors unanimously, and chamber music with Itamar Golan. He continued mentoring Dora Schwarzberg at the Vienna University of Arts and participated in the master classes of prominent musicians. Prizewinner of numerous competitions including “Jascha Heifetz” Special Mention at the IBLA foundation International Competition in Italy (2011) and 1st prize of the “American Fine Arts” in New York, in 2012 he made his Carnegie Hall debut, followed by USA Recital tour. He was invited as a Rising Star of the “Great Music Festival” in South Korea in 2011-2013 seasons and has played with the Academy of the Radio France Philharmonic under the direction of Myung-Whun Chung. Boris has performed internationally as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and in festivals at important venues in France and throughout Europe and Asia. Boris was selected and joined iPalpiti in 2016. In 2019, he returned to iPalpiti with his Trio Zadig, joining iPalpiti family. He plays a 1750 violin by the famous Italian maker Carlo Antonio Testore.
MARC GIRARD GARCIA, cellist, born in 1990 in San Francisco. Marc began his cello studies at the Toulouse Conservatoire in France and graduated with highest honors at age 16. He continued his studies at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique (CNSM) de Paris in the class of Roland Pidoux, Xavier Philipps and Marc Coppey. He also studied with Rober Nagy, cello solo of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna at the University of Vienna. Winner of numerous competitions, in 2010 he was awarded the 2nd prize at the Vatelot-Rampal international competition and was invited by the soloists of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to perform chamber music at the Musikverein. Marc participated in international festivals including Wiener Philarmoniker and Pablo Casals in Prades. Marc Girard Garcia plays a Frank Ravatin cello, generously loaned to him by the El Pasito association.

Eduard Schmieder holds the Temple University Carnell Chair Professor of Violin at Center of the Arts in Philadelphia where he is an Artistic Director for Strings and teaches an internationally selected class. Prior positions were a Distinguished Algur H. Meadows Chair of Violin and Chamber Music in the Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas (1990-2006), and tenured professor of the violin at the University of Southern California, the position formerly held by Jascha Heifetz. Schmieder has taught master classes in virtually every foremost conservatory in the world. Since 2004, he is on the faculty at the Mozarteum Summer Academie Salzburg.
EDUARD SCHMIEDER, born and educated in Russia has been characterized as an “extraordinary musician of the late 20th century” (Henry Roth). As conductor and violinist Schmieder performed in prestigious concert halls worldwide and has collaborated with such musicians as Yehudi Menuhin, Ida Haendel, Martha Argerich, and many others. In 1996, he performed a recital in Genoa on Paganini’s famous Guarneri del Gesu “Il Cannone” violin.

…iPalpiti has become part of my life. And a huge part. From initial email almost 5 years ago, to the friendships I’ve made (for life), the invaluable time spent with maestro Dr. S, and the lessons learnt from you Mrs. S in building festivals/sponsors/professional relationships. …Peter, Conrad, Lars, Kian, Catharina, Nora, Marie, etc. etc. etc. the list goes on – all iPalpiti family that I continue to work with on each season: each of us introducing each other to other contacts, sharing beautiful concerts together, travelling around to meet each other informally too – iPalpiti is a real family. It’s unique. The supporters and benefactors of iPalpiti - such kind and generous people is invaluable to my emotional health, and gives me such strength knowing the support I have the other side of the world.
…Hearing Peter play that first rehearsal back almost 5 years ago sticks in my memory… his solos, grace, attitude has taught me many things: especially how to cope with situations professionally. And what a player......... Any time on rehearsal or performance with him is just 100% joy.
…The time with Dr. Schmieder - both in rehearsal/performance and out. The things I’ve learnt – and the inspiration is impossible to measure. I think he is without doubt, one of the biggest influences on my musical development in the last 5 years since I met him. And he will continue to be for many years to come. And the things that he has opened my mind to play SUCH a role when I teach. Even my students, when I start the phrase “you know, Dr. Schmieder told me........,” immediately sit up and know that what I am about to say comes directly from my innermost feelings.
…I just had a great tour in Toronto with Conrad [Chow]. Such a mature artist – and one on the most warm people I’ve ever met – preparing concerts (recital and Brahms double) in Canada with him was an unforgettable experience.
…This season several iPalpiti coming to my own festival. Socially, meeting numerous ones all over the world, as our touring paths cross. …I could go on - iPalpiti as you must know, is deeply installed in my life.

iPalpiti Artists International has a special place in my heart. I was fortunate and privileged to be a member of this wonderful group from 2004 to 2013, including tours in Northern California and Israel. I always looked forward to make music with the iPalpiti family under Maestro Schmieder’s baton and perform in beautiful concert halls such as Walt Disney Hall, Carnegie Hall and Kimmel Center. Maestro Schmieder inspired all of us during rehearsals and on stage to perform in “one heartbeat.” One of the special moments for me was the performance of Tchaikovsky’s String Serenade at Disney Hall when everyone played in one breath from the beginning to the end.
All of this wouldn’t be possible without the support of iPalpiti benefactors and devoted audiences. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Maestro Schmieder and Mrs. Schmieder for your guidance and for creating this opportunity for young musicians from all over the world. I became a member of iPalpiti in the Summer of 2016 and joined the Israel tour in Fall 2017. The tour to Israel changed my life. Not only did we get to play incredible music, including Tchaikovsky’ Souvenir de Florence, we got to see the most amazing historical sites in Israel thanks to the extraordinary planning by director Laura Schmieder. I met so many remarkable people that I continue to be in contact with, and will treasure these memories for the rest of my life. I’m thankful to iPalpiti for bringing us all together to make music, even when that might be very difficult. I wish Dr. Schmieder, Laura Schmieder, all current and former iPalpitians, as well as our beloved audiences good health during this incredibly difficult time.
I had the honor to join the iPalpiti Orchestra in 2014. Many thanks to Maestro Dr. Schmieder and Laura Schmieder for allowing me to share my talent in the viola section. The immense talent of each musician in iPalpiti and world-class music making is abundant. With a unique pool of international talent, iPalpiti brings together musicians from all walks of life for an experience you won’t find anywhere else. I urge anyone who supports the arts to offer their support to this ensemble. While we live in such a dark time in our world history, music has always been a way for each and every one of us to escape. The current state of affairs have placed many performing artists in a difficult place. Live performances have been either canceled or postponed with no potential date in sight. Besides it affecting our income, it also prevents us from expressing ourselves musically and gifting that expression to our beloved audiences.
I remain hopeful that one day, all artists will be able to take the stage once again. I look forward to seeing iPalpiti continue to heighten the artistic lens of the classical community in Los Angeles, and the world, for many years to come.
